2024- 2025 SCHOOL PROFILE

SCHOOL BACKGROUND

Belen Jesuit is an all-male college preparatory school founded in 1854 in Havana, Cuba, where it operated until government seizure in May 1961. It reopened in Miami, Florida, in September 1961 and moved into the current campus in September 1981. Since then, the campus has grown to 34 acres in suburban Miami with state-of-the-art facilities.

The foundation of education at Belen is based on religious formation, academic excellence, social responsibility and athletic achievement. As a Catholic-Jesuit school, Belen strives to form leaders who are men of character committed to the Christian spirits of understanding, social justice and concern for others.

Although the majority of Belen students are of Hispanic background, the school is open to all students regardless of race, religion or national origin.

MARKING SYSTEM

The alpha system is used for all marks Two additional quality points are given for grades A through C in AP courses. Honors courses are given an additional quality point for grades A through C. Students are given the opportunity to take dual enrollment courses through St. Thomas University and Florida International University. However, only grades earned at Belen are used to calculate the grade point average

Students receive marks in the fall and spring semesters, which are averaged together (for year-long courses) to provide one final grade. A grade point average is calculated at the end of each academic year and averaged across all years to provide a cumulative grade point average.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

A total of 28 credits and a cumulative GPA of 2.0 are required for graduation:

CLASS RANK

Belen Jesuit does not rank its students for purposes of college admission. The quality of a student's curriculum and individual academic achievement is discussed in a personal letter of recommendation.

ENROLLMENT IN HONORS AND AP COURSES

Students must have a 3.5 unweighted cumulative GPA to enroll in AP courses and 3 25 unweighted cumulative GPA to enroll in Honors courses. In addition, students must have an A in the previous year's related course. Students must also pass the previous year's related AP course exam to continue in AP courses for a given subject. Eligible freshmen are limited to two AP courses.

CHRISTIAN SERVICE

DISTINCTIVE CURRICULUM FEATURES

As a Catholic-Jesuit school, we believe in the ideal of forming our students to become “men-for-others.” Students are required to devote 25 hours per year to community service. A minimum of 100 service hours is required for graduation from Belen Jesuit

Continuing in the Jesuit tradition and keeping with its Hispanic roots, a hallmark of Belen education is its wellroundedness. All students must take Western Civilization and Art History (or the AP option) as juniors and Latin American History as seniors. Both courses may be completed in Spanish based on student interest. Philosophy is also a required course for seniors. All high school students also complete two years of Spanish and four years of Theology.
