From Rabbi Alan Berg May You Receive The Angels’ Blessing This New Year Dear Friends, As the New Year approaches, I am sure we are all facing our own lives with a sense of reflection and perhaps, concern. The Holydays are a grand ritual, a prayer par excellence’ seeking God’s favor in our personal lives. This year as our evening services begin, Erev Rosh Hashanah and Kol Nidre, we will sing a glorious song The Angels’ Blessing by Debbie Friedman, as we place the Torah into the ark. Try and learn the words in the days leading up to the Holydays so that you can join in: May our right hand bring us closer to our Godliness. May our left hand give us strength to face each day. And before us may our visions light our paths ahead. And behind us may well-being heal our way. All around us is Shechinah. It’s a delicate balance for all of us in living our lives. In Judaism we seek to maintain that balance. The famous story about Hillel standing on one foot and describe his faith, is because he had that balance. Debbie’s beautiful melody and her poetic prayerfulness bring us into that state of balance when we sing The Angels’ Blessing. I’m looking forward to hearing you sing it loud and strong. Bonnie and I wish you good health, peace and community in the New Year. Warmly, Rabbi Alan Berg September, 2015

From Our President, Sue Greenspan Dog Days of Summer On Saturday night, August 8, 6 dogs and numerous Beit Haverim Pet Parents and members met at George Rogers Park for an evening of fun: walks by the river, throwing the football, ”feasting” from a lavish buffet of delicious picnic fare, and testing their Jewish knowledge. Manning the barbecue were “grill masters” Marty Lefkowitz and Brian Schwartz. Those “dogs” were done to a turn. The dessert table was laden with tasty treats, with the s’more bars were voted best dessert. The athletes tossed the football around and spent an equal amount of time trying to retrieve their footballs and darts from the “man-eating” tree. While the children played and the dogs were walked, Rabbi Berg quizzed several members on their knowledge of ancient Jewish knowledge! As dusk settled over us, the Sherman family (home from their recent trip to Israel) and their dog, Nation, arrived at the park to join us as Rabbi Berg led us in a beautiful Havdallah service. Ilana Schwartz’s mother, Cantor Jan Morrison, lent her beautiful voice to our singing. What a wonderful evening to celebrate our family at Beit Haverim and enter into the High Holy Days. Special thanks to Karin and Gary Stolz, who secured the spot and set up the picnic. B’Sholom, Sue Greenspan

Temple Ride Share Mitzvah Occasionally we hear about a temple member who would like to attend services or a temple event, but is unable to drive. We would like to compile a list of folks by geographic location that would be willing to give a temple member a ride. If you might be able to help with this, give Allison in the office a call at 503-568-1241. Then a temple member could call her and she would know if someone in their area might be able to drive them to the service or event.

Challah Mavens Many of you have asked to join the Challah team. Robin Kay and Erin David have been baking challah for quite some time. It would be nice for others to join in and help out. So here is your chance to volunteer. Email Allison in the office to let her know what week/s you can be the Challah maker. We'll get a schedule going. I'm sure Robin and Erin will appreciate the help! It'll be fun for us all!

In honor of 

Thank you to Marki Maizels for your donation in honor of Constance and Don Tsukamaki’s wedding Donations

At Beit Haverim we are often asked the question, “How much does the Rabbi (Temple) charge for officiating at a life cycle event (baby naming, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, wedding, or funeral)? The answer is, “The Rabbi charges nothing.” The Rabbi officiating at these events is just one of the many privileges of membership at Beit Haverim. However, it is a tradition to make a donation to one of the many funds we have established at Beit Haverim in honor of your event. A congregation does not survive on dues alone. It is through your generous donations that many of our programs are able to function. The next time you are called to the Bima to say an Aliyah, dress the Torah, carry the Torah through the congregation, remember it is an honor. Do a Mitzvah and make a donation to the fund of your choice. Click here to make your online donation! Thank you! September, 2015

Tikkun Olam Tikkun Olam is once again working to collect non-perishable food for our fellow Oregonians who are hungry. Last year, the wonderful people at Beit Haverim collected well over 500 pounds of food. We are going for 600 pounds this year! We will give you a bag to bring your food back in, but feel free to bring your non-perishables in your own bag.

The Oregon Food Bank really needs these nutritious foods:        

Shelf-stable milk Foods high in protein such as canned meats (i.e., tuna, chicken, salmon) and canned or dried beans Foods high in nutrients, such as canned fruits and vegetables (preferably with reduced sodium and reduced sugar) Whole-grain foods such as brown rice, whole grain cereal and whole-wheat pasta Soups, chilies and stews (preferably with reduced sodium and reduced fat) 100 percent fruit juice (canned, plastic or boxed) Unsaturated cooking oil And other nutritious, “healthy-choice” foods (preferably with reduced fat, sodium and sugar)

Why Aren’t There More Black People In Oregon? Sunday, October 11, from 12:30 pm – 2:00 pm This question (Why aren't there more Black people in Oregon?) has puzzled many in our community. We are going to find some answers and a lot of information in our hour and a half long conversation. This is the focus of “Why Aren’t There More Black People in Oregon? A Hidden History,” a free conversation with Portland State University author and adjunct professor Walidah Imarisha. This program is hosted by Lake Oswego United Church of Christ and Beit Haverim and sponsored by Oregon Humanities. Imarisha has taught in Portland State University’s Black Studies department, where she has created classes about topics as diverse as the history of the Black Panther Party, race and the history of prisons, Hurricane Katrina, and hip hop as literature. She has facilitated writing workshops for students in third to twelfth grade, in community centers, youth detention facilities, and women’s prisons. This is an important program and is open to the public. We will have babysitters to care for very small children during the program. Please make it a point to come and discuss with us, and bring your neighbors. September, 2015
