Beit Haverim is an open, inviting, and spiritually alive Jewish community, located just outside of Portland, Oregon in Lake Oswego. We welcome everyone to our Reform congregation of Jews by birth, Jews by choice and Jews at heart.

From Rabbi Alan Berg “The blasts of the Shofar on Rosh Hashanah revitalize the soul and intelligence of every Jew. Each one receives a new soul and a new level of understanding. This new soul and vision are drawn from the inner countenance of God.” Rabbi Nachman of Brazlav

The Month of Elul Preparing for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Dear Friends, When the sun sets on August 16 the Hebrew month of Elul begins. During Elul, we are to prepare ourselves for the Jewish New Year, with a willingness to go deep inside, walk around our past year, and think about any ‘tidying up’ that might need done. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and the days between are known all together as the Days of Awe. During Elul, this month of preparation, we are called upon to give thought to what we want to focus on and what we want to have in our thoughts when the holidays commence. Elul provides summer day equivalents of the intense reflection of the coming New Year, but it is important in the way that learning scales prepares one to play music. If Elul passes unacknowledged for the obligation it places upon us for reflection, then we are likely to spend the holydays learning or playing the scales, instead of making music. In order to help us reach this level, I urge people to write a Jewish journal. Begin writing down your Jewish experiences, religious and spiritual thoughts, on August 16 as Elul begins. Keep at it through Rosh Hashanah and The Day of Atonement – Yom Kippur, - don’t write on the holydays themselves - then continue through Sukkot, all the way to the end of the season of renewal on October 6. During August and Elul, I hope the temple will be a place to help you prepare spiritually for the holydays. Our summer services, music, Torah study, social times and our wonderful members can provide just the right experience to nudge us toward that first shofar sound, proclaiming the New Year. B’Shalom, Rabbi Alan Berg

From Our President, Sue Greenspan Beit Haverim is a wonderful place for all of us to learn, communicate, educate, and to enjoy spiritual as well as social times. Wouldn’t it be terrific if this was all there was to it? Although most of us forget, the Temple is also a small business. In these economic times, it is very hard for small businesses to exist. Our expenses – rent, URJ dues, advertising, payroll, and many miscellaneous expenses, have to be met in order to survive. To meet these expenses, it’s imperative that everyone renews their membership as soon as possible. The new fiscal year began July 1st, so if you haven’t done so already, please pay your Temple dues as quickly as possible. Additionally, we are in the planning stages for fall Religious School classes. To properly assign teachers, we need to know if your children will be enrolled. If you haven’t already done so, please enroll your children in Religious and Hebrew School. We all derive many benefits as Jews from our great congregation. We have all become intertwined as the family of Beit Haverim. Please do your share to help us continue this wonderful experience that we have all worked so hard to achieve. Click here to renew your membership. Click here to enroll your children in Religious School. L’Shalom, Sue Greenspan

Bar Mitzvah of Gabe Horwitz Bar Mitzvah of Gabe Horwitz Saturday, August 29, 10:00AM Hi, my name is Gabe Horwitz and I am an 8th grader at Lake Oswego Junior High School. I have one older sister, Garland, who attends Lake Oswego High School. My parents are Michael and Brandy Horwitz. We live on Oswego Lake and have since I was 4. My favorite school subjects are Math and PE. After school I enjoy soccer, tennis, swimming, and golf. I am on the club Crossfire soccer team level I. Soccer is currently my #1 sport. Last year I took one year of Spanish and am continuing to do so. I have been to Mexico many times and traveled to Spain once. I hope to be fluent in Spanish one day. For my mitzvah project I am working at Tualatin Dog shelter and rescue walking and grooming dogs that need to find homes. I would like to thank Rabbi Berg, Sami Oberlander, my parents, and my hebrew tutor, Chana, for teaching me Hebrew and the Jewish traditions that I know and love today.

August Events Beit Haverim Inaugurates New Adult Jewish Studies Programs Prayerbook and Biblical Hebrew For Beginners Six Sessions Tuesdays, 6:30PM to 8:00PM, August 25 - October 13 Most Jewish experiences, from worship to Bible Study to Shabbat and Holy Day observances, offer greater depth and religious wisdom with Hebrew reading skills and knowledge of the Hebrew language. With this in mind, Beit Haverim is pleased to offer our members and the larger community a 6-session beginners’ Hebrew course taught by our master Hebrew teacher, Sami Oberlander. Many of us wondered if we could learn to read Hebrew. Sami has had a positive impact on a generation of students, adults and children. This is the course for you. The cost for the course for Beit Haverim members is $36 and non-members are requested to contribute $72. Price includes course materials. Please contact the office if you would like to sign up. We are very excited with the results and can’t wait to try all the fabulous recipes. These will make great gifts and wonderful addition to anyone’s cookbook collection. They are $15 each. Please use this link to place your order.

Beit Haverim Children’s Library At one of the Congregational Desserts, parents of young children asked about a Children's Library that could be accessed during services, for restless children, or on Sundays when older siblings are in class. What a great idea! We are asking for "gently loved" Jewish book for children of preschool age through 4/5 grade. (Outgrown books from PJ library are a wonderful source). Also, if you have a small bookcase that you are no longer using, please consider donating it to the library. One with wheels (or wheels could be added) would be most appreciated. A box labeled "Beit Haverim Children Library" will be in the lobby to collect donations. For more information, please contact Sue Greenspan.

Tributes & Memorials In honor of 

Thank you to Sue Greenspan in honor of good health for Florence Yospe

Thank you to Sue Greenspan in honor of Edythe Steinberg, mother of Roberta De Asis

Thank you to Sue Greenspan in honor of The marriage of Constance and Don Tsukamaki

Thank you to Rita and Steve Sherman for the generous donation in order for us to buy more siddurs

Donations At Beit Haverim we are often asked the question, “How much does the Rabbi (Temple) charge for officiating at a life cycle event (baby naming, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, wedding, or funeral)? The answer is, “The Rabbi charges nothing.” The Rabbi officiating at these events is just one of the many privileges of membership at Beit Haverim. However, it is a tradition to make a donation to one of the many funds we have established at Beit Haverim in honor of your event. A congregation does not survive on dues alone. It is through your generous donations that many of our programs are able to function. The next time you are called to the Bima to say an Aliyah, dress the Torah, carry the Torah through the congregation, remember it is an honor. Do a Mitzvah and make a donation to the fund of your choice. Click here to make your online donation! Thank you!

Tikkun Olam Tikkun Olam is in full swing as we move toward the High Holidays! Our school supply collection needs to wind down so that we can distribute our articles to the students who need them....so please bring any and all donations to Beit Haverim BEFORE August 22nd. The knitters among us are working away on hats and scarves to be donated to homeless folks before cold weather sets in. If you are a knitter or if you can make a scarf or hat, please do and get them to Barbara Gold . We are beginning our all important annual food drive that will run through the High Holidays . Please start now to collect non-perishable goods and we will hand out bags beginning on Erev Rosh Hashanah so that you can bring them back to us. Last year we filled four barrels. Let's try for 6 this year! Finally, stay tuned for the October event that we are working on with LOUCC regarding race relations in Oregon. It promises to be a provocative program and we will all gain knowledge and, we hope, motivation for action from it. The program will be held October 11 and you will receive more information as the date comes near. Thank you for all your help.

Choir News The High Holidays are coming: Consider Joining the Choir! ♬ Our wonderful choir will again be singing for the High Holidays (erev Rosh Hashana is on Sept. 13), and we will begin rehearsing about a month before that. New singers are most welcome, so please feel free to contact Judith Kleinstein if you are interested, or want more information. The Beit Haverim Volunteer Choir exists to assist in congregational worship, especially during the High Holidays, the annual AllMusic Service, and other occasional special events. Our choir includes men’s and women’s voices; much of our music is in two and fourpart harmony. We rehearse enough to learn the music, but not so often that it is intrusive to our busy lives. Choir members are not professional musicians, rather, we sing to add additional dimension to our worship and to our community. As a bonus, when we sing together, we often find it personally exhilarating! Anyone interested in joining the choir or for more information may contact Judith Kleinstein. Thank you!
