Preface

Motivated Dynamics from ‘Home’ – Family Members, Family, Residence Eric Fung has been known to me as an amicable and humorous person. He is serious and eloquent on topics of interior design theories and concepts; but to his little girl, he is a sweetheart daddy whose eyes speak for tenderness as if telling the world ‘my biggest accomplishment’ lies in having a treasured family. As a fore-runner in the field of interior design, Eric understands the importance of home to families, therefore when carrying out the crucial mission of home renovation; he recognizes the intimate links between the home and family to stride for meticulous perfection. HOME – STARTS FROM THE HEART Taking up a renovation project to create a comfortable home for the family to nurture love and passion is a meaningful undertaking. Eric indulges himself in every assignment to plan and initiate the most fitting design. Before formally meeting the client, Eric would pay a prior visit to the unit for a comprehensive grasp on its internal and external composition for detailed analysis on the continuity between the interior and its surrounding environment, and scrutinize the benefits or issues of the existing floor plan. Then at the initial appointment, the basics of the environment and floor plan are already in place. Because of the prior understanding, when clients articulate their aspiration and expectations, Eric could readily review and present the perfect blueprint tailor-made for personal attributes. A handful of clients nowadays are keen on feng shui which requires the interior design to intuitively blend in colors and materials according to the metaphysical theories and embrace spatial sanctuary or connection correspondingly. Eric would also endorse coordinated accentuations to promote ambience appealing to the homeowner’s nominated taste and style. Black, grey, and white are chic but cold colors; however, through Eric’s unique application throughout the years, they deliver strong personality. To emerge within a short time frame as one of the renowned fore-runners in the industry, Eric no doubt has distinctive aesthetic interpretations. He believes the subtlety of classics boosts and nurtures modern chic designs to their fullest sophistication. LIFE TIME GUARANTEE Eric is fully engaged from planning, theme determination, down to construction phases. ‘Life Time Guarantee’ has always been his verbalized mission to provide décor and materials that could last a life time. What does that confidence come from? Besides the superb craftsmanship of his workman team, the insistence on impeccable material selection is also an important factor. In order to cultivate a ‘life time’ home for his clients, Eric allows no flaws. He would carefully select a power cord or the easily worn out door hinges even though they come from the same British brand name and manufacturing plant. His insistence is recognized by the industry which made him winner of the ‘Quality Renovation Contractor of the Year’ for both 2013 and 2014 awarded by the Hong Kong Professional Building Inspector Association. 拼搏動力源自「家」家人家庭家居認識 Eric Fung（馮建耀）多年，個性開朗，風趣幽默；談及室內設計理論，滔滔不絕，神態嚴肅認真；與囡囡相處融洽，一副慈父的模樣，父女對望的神情溫馨，彷彿告訴大家「我的人生成就」，擁有最珍貴的家庭及家人。作為室內設計界的牽頭人物，Eric深明家的重要性，擔當別人家居裝潢規劃的重任，明白家居與家庭之間的關係牢不可破，一絲不苟，力求完美。

TintExpress DECORATION AND FUNCTIONALITY OF STAIRCASES

樓梯的粉飾與功能定位 As the term suggests, standalone homes are independent houses of their own that possess multiple levels connected by staircases. Staircases have become one of the focal designs in recent home designs highlighting functionality, ambience accentuation, spatial reorganization, and elevation of opulence. The size and location of staircases have to be in the right proportion of the whole plan. The overall temperament of a house could easily be slackened if the staircase for a 5,000 sq. ft. home sits in an obscure corner conspicuously. The staircase could be a displayed artwork. Coordinated with a glamourous ceiling chandelier, a spiral staircase could trigger magnificent grandeur when the dwellers walk up the stairs in lavish dignity.

Eric Fung’s revamp project for Casa Marina Phase II was so successful that he immediately made himself a name in the residential complex where homeowners lined up for their renovation projects. The prototype floor plan separates the living and dining rooms by the kitchen, store room, maid’s room, and a staircase. The original idea is to let homeowners enjoy the garden views on both sides of the house. With a ‘Z’ staircase that sits in the corner, the home has lost its well-deserved splendor and therefore not well received by homeowners. Eric set off from the homeowners’ lifestyle to reorganize space on the ground floor and its staircase for a complete turnaround. The living and dining rooms now take the prime location in the center and is accentuated with a spiral

staircase that significantly heightened its sumptuousness.

Adjoining units are two units combined into one for a single family. The connecting space is usually the living/dining rooms where adjoining walls can be demolished to create a more roomy living space. The decisions on whether certain walls could be torn down or the size of walls to be demolished have to be consulted and determined by professionals. However, adjoining units offered by property developers do not require any wall demolition. The mission of a designer in these adjoining units is to rationalize spatial composition. The individual units have kitchen, bedrooms and living room of their own. When combining these two units, should both kitchens be kept or a single kitchen is revamped? They plan spatial utilization, resolve or reconcile floor plan deficiencies to match homeowner’s personal taste and lifestyle to convey a home that expresses unique identity. Homeowners in units of thousands sq. ft or hundreds sq. ft often present a common quest, ‘Eric, I have tons of clutters to be organized and stored, could you maximize storage potentials’. The majority of people who make Hong Kong their permanent home share this customary and practical phenomenon. Ceiling, floor and walls have offered endless possibilities for spatial composition. Besides storage cabinets along the walls, raised platforms above the floor have long been employed by de-

signers to offer an extra foot of depth to store off season clothing or rarely used items. On top is normally the bed for a good night sleep. Earlier designs utilized the ceiling to include storage space along the corridor to the bedrooms. But since storage space is limited and retrieval is inconvenient; the lowered ceiling also dims the corridor lighting, so the ceiling storage design is rarely employed today. Ever thought about the air duct as storage cabinet? This is Eric Fung’s innovative design to embellish the air duct of a split system air conditioner located at the corner of the ceiling. Presented as a rectangular cabinet in white wood, cool air infiltrates the home through its wooden

bars. Besides keeping the air conditioner itself, the air duct provides ample usable space around it therefore Eric installs a swing door for the homeowner’s easy access to the air duct to store less frequently used items. One could never recognize the secret storage space from its outlook.

Masterpiece Featured Walls 別出心裁的飾牆 One of the showcase attributes of interior designers lies in the design of featured walls that could accentuate an opulent ambience through the application of handpicked materials and coordinated furnishing. However, will it be a waste of the lavish floor space to erect a featured wall that serves only a decorative purpose? This is the drive behind Eric’s innovative ‘Memory Wall’ design to top decoration with functionality and fills the wall with memories of the homeowners’ 176

growth and laughter. ‘Memory Wall’ is Eric’s masterpiece design in its added functionality to a decorative component. During the product design process, elaborated consideration is given to every detail of the featured wall ranging from material selection to the distribution of photo frames. It reflects the designer’s intricacy to deliver a one-of-akind intimate featured wall which cannot be replaced.

Secrets Behind Wall Demolition 拆牆擴空的秘訣 One of the most important missions of designers is to reorganize residential space through wall demolition. Common floor plans clearly define living and bedroom spaces and group the bedrooms to one side along a long corridor. Take a typical 3 bedroom unit as example; the 2 smaller bedrooms are usually closer to the living room. If we want to expand the bedroom, wall demolition is a must. When the walls are torn down, marks and cracks are inevitable along the ceiling and floor, so the decision to demolish walls can only be recommended for complete

renovation projects. A lot of the living room adjacent walls are so close that they allow less than 10 foot distance between the sofa and television. In order to install stunning audio-visual equipment, it is common design phenomenon to demolish the bedroom wall so that the living room is expanded. However, it should be noted that many of the walls between the living room and bedroom are construction walls that can never be demolished as they are vital for building support. Before starting a residential renovation project, it is imperative to

consult the designer to know if work can be done to certain walls. Besides bedroom and living room walls, demolition of walls between the corridor and bedroom is also commonly seen. If the corridor is narrow and long and lacks natural illumination, the recent trend is to connect the two spaces by tearing down walls between the corridor and study room to improve lighting. Depending on the need, sometimes glass walls are applied to define the spaces. Wall demolition is no doubt a desirable solution in

organizing space; it should be noted, however, that with less walls, support for furnishing is less. When room numbers are reduced, future expansion of family members could be an issue; and future re-sale of the unit could also bring issues.

While allowing natural illumination to penetrate into the kitchen, its shimmering splendor competes with the Memories Wall and marbled theme wall in the living room for focal enticement. The original 4-bedroom layout was reduced to two for a sense of coziness in abundant living space for Eric and their daughters. The young kids are so receptive to new innovations that the regular princess accentuation is not adequate to fill their cup. This extravagant crystal chandelier is a focal attraction for the home. Uniquely designed tailor-made to connect and circulate between two floors, the light fixture suspends from the ceiling to flatter the spiral staircase in cozy alliance. Floating Ring features 3 sets of rings formed by crystal bars in organic inclines and angles. The rings are inspired by the Olympic icon. After numerous experiments on the quantity, layout, and assembly, the height and visual appeal of the 3-ring design offers the most desirable attributes. With crystal bars cut and organized in precision, the dainty light fixture reflects alluring glow on its top bars armed by steel wires. When caressed by gentle breezes, it will dangle in grace to pay tribute to the designer’s meticulous motif.

Memory Wall Memories are always sweet – photos of the chubby toddler soaked in the washbasin or an array of happy faces are all records of children’s blissful growth. The Memories Wall is a decorative theme wall that incorporates photo display features originated from Eric Fung’s Sky Horizon residential project which is so well received that the concept is repeatedly applied. The initial

version presents mounted glass covering that affixes a glued acrylic board with magnets to hold photos in place with another plastic board. The updated version which is still employed today features a glossy or matt finish stainless steel board mounted on the wall to directly hold magnets attached to the photo displaying acrylic boards.

Mini Skirt The collaboration between Eric Fung and fashion guru Eric Kot has clearly demonstrated what â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;fashion furnitureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is all about through their joint dynamics in merging furniture and fashion designs in a catalyst that validates the infinity in the world of designs. Mini Skirt is supported by a twisted resilient steel bar to form the base of total support. Above it is a rectangular seating platform made of fiberglass which resembles a mini skirt to offer comfort and consolation.

A versatile promotion of ambiences could be generated when different types of skirts are put on. When the chair is coated with a leather skirt, it immediately infuses grandeur dignity to the home. As a piece of functional furniture, it initiates a diversity of modern visual stimulus when blended with fashion hypotheses. The original design paradigm of Mini Skirt is a crossover prototype with various brand names to endorse the brandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unique identity.
