The iconic Canadian West, with its wide open spaces, fresh clean air, rich fertile soil, and sunkissed summers, provides ideal conditions for bountiful crops, the sweetest nectar and the highest quality honey.
Recognized worldwide, BeeMaid Honey has its roots in the 1950s when the Alberta Honey Producers and Manitoba Cooperative Honey Producers joined hands to market their premium Canadian honey. Since then, BeeMaid Honey has been proudly owned by Canadian beekeepers who provide us with the finest honey sourced directly from their hives.
Pristine growing conditions
At BeeMaid, it is about pride – in our bees, our beekeepers, and our honey. On average, our Coops produce about one-third of all Canadian honey.
Our beekeepers’ ownership structure ensures consistent quality year after year, bottle after bottle. Our Canadian honey is 100% homegrown but holds an international reputation for quality. The art of making honey is one of nature’s most amazing processes and we are happy to share the end result
It was the 1930s and times were tough across the Canadian prairies Already hit by the Great Depression, Canadian farmers suffered all the more thanks to a merciless drought that lasted most of the decade. Up until the late 1930s, beekeepers had to process, pack, and market their honey individually. It was during these challenging times that the seeds for what would one day become BeeMaid Honey were planted.
In 1936, the Provincial Apiculturist called a meeting to discuss the idea of forming a cooperative due to the unsettled nature of the local honey market. The response was overwhelmingly positive, leading to the incorporation of the Alberta Honey Producers Cooperative Limited in 1940 Their initial operations began with a small packing plant in Edmonton, Alberta where the cooperative started processing their members' honey By 1947, the cooperative had successfully packaged and marketed their honey under the brand name AltaSweet
In a similar effort to relieve the distressed situation in the beekeeping industry, the Manitoba Cooperative Honey Producers was incorporated in 1939 With very limited resources and a minimum of processing and packing equipment, the Cooperative began operations in an old, rented warehouse in downtown Winnipeg. It was an exciting time as the Cooperative’s beekeepers began to market their high quality honey under a registered brand name. At about the same time, the Saskatchewan Honey Producers Cooperative was formed and began packing and marketing honey for Saskatchewan beekeepers. This operation was set up in Tisdale, Saskatchewan.
BeeMaid Honey was established in 1954, when the Saskatchewan and Manitoba Cooperatives joined forces to market their honey In 1961, the Alberta Honey Cooperative collaborated with BeeMaid to further develop the export market, and then, in 1962, the domestic market In 1970, the Saskatchewan Cooperative amalgamated with the Manitoba Cooperative Membership in the Alberta and Manitoba Cooperatives continues to grow, with intake levels at their respective plants often exceeding ten million pounds annually BeeMaid Honey is owned jointly and equally by our two cooperatives and we proudly source honey from our owners, the beekeepers.

Canadian honey is a popular ingredient among chefs and food manufacturers due to its distinct floral and sweet notes It can be used in a variety of dishes, including snack foods, desserts, marinades, and dressings. Its versatility and unique flavour make it a favourite among culinary professionals.
Different colored honeys come from different nectar sources and have varying levels of sweetness, acidity, and floral notes. These unique flavour profiles can add depth and complexity to dishes, from sweetening marinades to balancing savory sauces. Chefs can experiment with various honey types to discover their favorite pairings with different ingredients.
BeeMaid Honey offers chefs and product developers three different coloured honeys - white, golden and amber White honey is a light-colored, mild-tasting honey that is produced from the nectar of flowers like clover and canola. Golden honey is a bit darker in colour and has a richer flavour, with floral sources including alfalfa, sunflower and wildflowers. Amber honey is the darkest of the three and has the strongest, boldest taste, as it is made from the nectar of late summer flowers like goldenrod, wildflowers, and buckwheat.
