Hello Gardeners…

Welcome to April's gardening, I have been contacted by a few of you with gardening questions which is great so please do get in touch with your questions, to share a gardening event or send me a seasonal garden photo, I would love to hear from you. Spring is now in full swing with everything bursting into life, riots of colour everywhere but also it is a busy time in the garden, and especially with the Easter holidays and that’s when many venture out into their gardens with lots of jobs to do and those weeds will be starting to make more of an appearance! but remember whilst you're out in your garden take a moment sit in the sun, listen to the birds, and admire any colour you have in the garden and enjoy.

Some jobs to be doing in April • Lift and divide perennial plants now to improve their health and create new plants for your garden.

• Divide Hosta's before they come into leaf.

• Plant summer-flowering bulbs such as Lilies, Gladiolus and Crocosmia into borders or containers.

• Apply a high nitrogen lawn fertiliser, mow the grass regular but keep the blades fairly high for the first few cuts • Mulch your beds and borders with layer of well-rotted manure or garden compost to prepare for the growing season. You can also work in a general-purpose fertiliser such as pelleted chicken manure.

There’s nothing nicer than having a small tree within your front garden, with lots of variety now for small or dwarf tree’s making it easier to have one in the smallest of garden’s.

This month I have been creating a new border in the front garden and from the start I wanted a small tree with plenty of interest all year round so I selected this beautiful tree an Amelanchier- it was a tough decision as there a lot of small and beautiful trees to choose from!

Amelanchier × grandiflora 'Ballerina' Amelanchier are small deciduous trees or shrubs with showy white flowers in early spring, glowing fruits, and often good autumn colour 'Ballerina' is a vigorous small tree or large shrub with bronze-tinged young leaves which turn orange to brown in autumn. Flowers are white and relatively large, the fruit, a small red berry, which is good for wildlife.

Ultimate height 4–8 metres and time to ultimate height is 10–20 years with a spread of 4–8 metres soil conditions a moist but well–drained Grown for Stem, flower, foliage, and fruit.

DOROTHY CLIVE GARDEN & BRIDGEMERE GARDEN WORLD. Saturday 21st May 2022 Blue Skies the Limit Events and adventure are pleased to announce details of our first garden day trip for 2022 in May and it's great to be getting back out on the road again and we are heading to Staffordshire. Dorothy Clive Garden is an intimate and inspiring garden located in the woodland quarter of Staffordshire close to both the Shropshire and the Cheshire borders, this lovely garden has delights and surprises whatever the season, I have been many times and cannot wait to return.

There are many areas of diverse interest within this 12-acre, hillside garden. These include an edible woodland, a woodland quarry with waterfall, an alpine scree and pool, rose walk and amazing seasonal borders. The garden has several notable collections of plants including Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Camellias, Sarcococca and Hydrangeas.

Spectacular displays of Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Laburnum & Alliums can be seen throughout May There is a tearoom situated in the heart of the garden selling a range of refreshments and mouth-watering light lunches It’s then a short drive up the road to Bridgemere Garden World, Bridgemere is one of the largest garden centres in Europe and receives around 1.8 million annual visitors. The garden centre sells over five thousand plant varieties, most of which are grown locally.

There are display gardens open to the public which are designed to inspire amateur gardeners, it is composed of more than twenty separate gardens, including English country, Victorian, Mediterranean, woodland, water, rose and patio gardens. The display also includes recreations of prize-winning gardens from the Tatton Park and Chelsea Flower Show, as well as the garden in which the 1993 television series Gardener's Diary was filmed Facilities include a restaurant, coffee shop so lunch or afternoon tea can be taken here.

With a full day ahead of you, your day starts off with a breakfast roll and a hot drink from our pick-up points either the Navigation Inn, Breaston or the Plough Inn, Sandiacre.

Broxtowe Parks Team collaborate with The Friends Group for conservation event.

As part of Broxtowe's Green Futures initiative, this month the Council teamed up with The Friends of Watnall Green and Spinney to work on a project promoting the conservation of the borough's vital parks and open spaces.

On Friday 11th March 2022, The Broxtowe Parks Team worked in partnership with The Friends of Watnall Green and Spinney to host a practical conservation event at Watnall Spinney, a local nature reserve in Kimberley.

The Friends were joined by an enthusiastic team of volunteers from E-ON as part of the Company’s commitment to supporting environmental sustainability in the community. This is the first time that Broxtowe Borough Council has worked alongside a private business on a conservation project.

Before commencing, the parks team explained the importance of good management in woodlands and provided a practical demonstration on the safe use of tools. Then, with over 20 participants, the group undertook woodland management to benefit biodiversity, including removal of invasive shrubs and the creation of habitat stacks.

Other tasks included a thorough litter pick and pruning back along paths to improve accessibility. The pleasant early spring weather was a bonus and participants enjoyed the opportunity to learn new conservation skills.

Local ward Councillors Jill Owen and Robert Willimott, along with County Councillor Philip Owen were on hand to provide support and were highly impressed with the turnout and enthusiasm.

The Friends group are committed to working with the Borough Council to manage the Green and Spinney to benefit wildlife and the local community.

Safety Improvments at Hickings Lane Recreation Ground Stapleford.

Over the last 9 months Broxtowe Borough Council has been working very closely with Nottinghamshire Police to improve safety for visitors to Hickings Lane Recreation Ground in Stapleford. Following a successful bid to the Police and Crime Commissioners (PCC) in 2021, £25,000 was allocated by the PCC to provide new surveillance cameras, additional lighting and new fencing and gates on the park.

The new surveillance cameras have been installed adjacent to the play-area and skate park and monitor these areas including the pavilion and the multi-use games area. The cameras are panoramic with 360 degree views of the area. Fitted with infra-red vision they produce very high quality images, even when it is dark.

The new floodlights illuminate the play area, skate park and pavilion. They are all on timers so they come on at dusk and go off at midnight.

The final phase of the work was new fencing and gates at the West Cross Avenue entrance. This is now locked at night and opened again in the morning by residents.

Overall the project has been a huge success and a very good advert for partnership working. There has been a significant reduction in reports of anti-social behaviour and complaints about youths congregating on the park.

Councillor Richard MacRae said: “I would like to thank the hard work of the Officers at Broxtowe Borough Council, who with the help and support and funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Office, have been able to make this happen. I am also very grateful to the local residents who are helping support this scheme.”

Hair & Beauty professionals leave better equipped to support client health.

Hair & Beauty professionals from across Beeston and Nottingham are now better equipped to support their clients on personal matters including Skin Cancer and Domestic Abuse after attending a recent event.

More than 30 professionals went to the awareness event on 29 March at Beeston’s Youth and Community Centre to learn about the signs of skin cancer and Domestic Abuse they could look out for in their clients. The event was covered by Notts TV. Natalie from Jova Skin said: “I’ve got a great relationship with my clients, and I like to think my little clinic is a safe space that they could approach any concern with me. I’m now armed even further with the resources to refer my clients to the places that will make a huge difference.”

Meg from Just Peachy Waxing said: “A massive thank you to all the wonderful charities and organisations that bought us the Domestic Abuse and Skin Cancer Awareness event. It’s so refreshing to see the industry get together, learning new skills and educating ourselves further.”

Chris Harris, Partnership Manager for local Domestic Abuse charity Broxtowe Women’s Project, who spoke at the event, said: “Those who work in Hair & Beauty know only too well that they are often trusted with confidences, or that they are close enough to clients physically and emotionally to notice changes. This event equipped them with some useful knowledge, and also was the start of their awareness journey.”

The event was organised by South Nottinghamshire Integrated Care Partnership, Nottingham West Primary Care Network, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Clinical Commissioning Group and Broxtowe Borough Council.

Skin Cancer Awareness and Prevention was provided by Skcin - a specialist skin cancer charity that work closely with at risk and influential audiences including primary schools and nurseries.

What to do if you need urgent police help through the 999 service, but can’t speak If you’re in an emergency situation and need police help, but can’t speak, Make Yourself Heard and let the 999 operator know your call is genuine.

WHEN YOU CALL 999 All 999 calls are directed to call centres and will be answered

by BT operators. They will ask which service you need. If no service is requested but anything suspicious is heard throughout the process, BT operators will connect you to a police call handler.

IF YOU CALL 999 FROM A MOBILE It is always best to speak to the operator if you can, even by whispering. You may also be asked to cough or tap the keys on your phone in response to questions.

If making a sound would put you or someone else in danger and the BT operator cannot decide whether an emergency service is needed, your call will be transferred to the Silent Solution system.

The Silent Solution is a police system used to filter out large numbers of accidental or hoax 999 calls. It also exists to help people who are unable to speak, but who genuinely need police assistance.

You will hear an automated police message, which lasts for 20

seconds and begins with ‘you are through to the police’. It will ask you to press 55 to be put through to police call management. The BT operator will remain on the line and listen. If you press 55, they will be notified and transfer the call to the police. If you don’t press 55, the call will be terminated.

Pressing 55 does not allow police to track your location.

WHAT THEN? When transferred to your local police force, the police call handler will attempt to communicate with you by asking simple yes or no questions. If you are not able to speak, listen carefully to the questions and instructions from the call handler so they can assess your call and arrange help if needed.

IF YOU CALL 999 FROM A LANDLINE Because it’s less likely that 999 calls are made by accident from landlines, the Silent Solution system is not used.

If, when an emergency call on a landline is received: - there is no request for an emergency - the caller does not answer questions - only background noise can be heard and BT operators cannot decide whether an emergency service is needed, then you will be connected to a police call handler as doubt exists.

If you replace the handset, the landline may remain connected for 45 seconds in case you pick it up again.

If you pick up again during this 45 seconds and the BT operator is concerned for your safety, the call will be connected to police.

When 999 calls are made from landlines, information about where you’re calling from should be automatically available to the call handlers to help provide a response.

Lemon Chicken Quick and Easy Meal for 4 Method

Ingredients

1. Heat the oven to 400 degrees F. 200C 2. Pat the chicken breasts dry and place them in a baking/roasting dish.

3. In a bowl, mix the olive oil, oregano, thyme, garlic powder, 1 teaspoon salt and pepper to create a thick paste. Coat the chicken breast with seasoning paste.

4. Using the same bowl mix together the white wine, garlic, lemon zest, lemon juice, brown sugar and remaining 1 teaspoon salt. Pour over chicken breast.

5. If using, place the lemon slices between the chicken bake for 15 minutes, baste the chicken with the pan juice, bake for another 15 minutes or until the internal temperature of the chicken reads 165 F. 6. Use the sauce to baste the chicken as it bakes adding more of the flavour.

Bake in the oven until cooked

4 Boneless Chicken breasts (take off skin) 1/4 cup olive oil 2 tsp oregano, dried 2 tsp thyme, dried 2 tsp garlic powder 2 tsp salt, ½ tsp black pepper 1/2 cup dry white wine, 2 tbsp minced garlic (6 cloves) 1 tbsp lemon zest (2 lemons) 2 tbsp lemon juice, freshly squeezed 1 tbsp brown sugar 1 lemon, cut into 6 slices, optional

Widely considered one of the most charismatic performers on stage, Steve Harley continues to play to sold-out venues across the UK and Europe.

For Steve, life on the road is more than just a job: it is almost his life’s blood.

And with the February 2020 release of the all-acoustic CD, “UNCOVERED”, the original Cockney Rebel shows no sign of slowing down.

The Acoustic Band for 2022 will find Steve supported by long-standing violinist/ guitarist Barry Wickens, and Oli Heyhurst on double bass, with Dave Delarre on lead acoustic guitar.

Steve has been playing Live shows around the world for over 45 years and the thrill of another night in another place to another audience has not dimmed at all.

“We have real adventures on tour, “says Steve. “I’ve seen the Northern Lights, the Midnight Sun and dozens of wonderful galleries, museums and great cities, all on my down-time. I have a great life as a Wandering Minstrel!”

“UNCOVERED” includes a re-recording of Steve’s popular song “Love, Compared With You” with a newly composed third verse, plus eleven other songs he’s always wanted to perform. The album features Barry Wickens on viola and acoustic guitar, Oli Hayhurst on double bass, Tom Hooper on percussion and the Roots Music Legend, Martin Simpson, on guitar. Steve also sings a duet with the amazing Scottish singer, Eddi Reader.The acoustic sets for 2022 will include songs from the new CD, plus a selection from the vast and eclectic Harley Songbook. Mr Soft, Judy Teen, Sebastian and the legendary Make Me Smile will all be re-produced in the unique acoustic style.

An individual whose passion for live performance and perfection (it shows in his face) remains undiminished.”.

Rod Stewart, who covered Steve’s song “A Friend For Life”, describes him as “One of the finest lyricists Britain has produced.”

Steve received a Lifetime Achievement Award for Acoustic Music from the Acoustic Festival of Britain in 2018.

Switch from liquid soap to a bar of soap- much cheaper and lasts longer

Try using your microwave more.

It's usually cheaper than an oven.

Microwaves are high wattage but tend to be used for shorter time periods, and crucially they only heat the food.

With an oven, you're heating a much larger area so there's waste.

To cook a jacket potato in the microwave, is often substantially less than 25% of doing it in an oven.

Don't leave things on overnight to charge - once they are full your charger will still use power.

Plug it in to charge in the evening and turn it off before bed.

Safe too.

Use your oven to cook multiple things/meals, then freeze the ones you don't need and reheat in the microwave.

Check if your child is eligible for free school meals and the pupil premium. If you're on a means-tested benefit (like universal credit) and have a low income, it's worth a check if your child qualifies for free school meals. Pupil Premium can help with school trips etc.

Open Voices is Music for Everyone’s latest community Reg. Charity No. 1153412 project. The idea is to provide especially designed singing sessions for adults with learning difficulties or disabilities. Linking in with the expertise of Open Wings (based in Sherwood) and Reach (based in Southwell), MfE hopes to create a whole network of Open Voices singing groups in Nottinghamshire.

Come and try it for free. The first session you attend will be a free taster session.

After this, there will be a fee of £2 per session, covering everything you need, plus a ‘half-time’ cup of tea or coffee + biscuits! Subsidised places are available.
