The next meeting of the Wollaton Natural History Society is on Wednesday November 19th at 7.30pm, when our talk is entitled “Wildlife Hunting with a Camera”. This is an opportunity to enjoy the work of Richard Revels, an award-winning and widely-published photographer.

Book Review by Clare Lyons Danny Wallace and the Centre of the Universe by Danny Wallace This is part of the Quick Reads series, for those who only want a short book, or may be just starting to get back into reading or improve their literacy – it’s a great selection of authors that have produced some brilliant (short) books. Wallace is one of my absolute favourite authors, great non-fiction that is funny and very easy to read; in the longer format I would heartily recommend Friends Like These, especially if you’re middle aged – but I was thrilled to find he had also written a Quick Read. In the usual, slightly strange, way his books come about, Wallace was surprised to find that the centre of the universe was in fact in a town called Wallace in America – so he had no choice but to investigate…it’s a light and fun exploration of a very enigmatic town, and a great short story.

The pages are written on odd angles and it isn’t easy to follow at times, but it’s worth the effort as the rhythm and rhyme flow beautifully and the story is really lovely. The illustrations are entertaining and there is lots of extra detail in them to look at, the task that Sid has to perform is most important, and only the reader will know who saved the day. There were cheers all around when we came to the end.

partners on the City and County ‘Trent to Trenches’ project, commemorating World War One. For both our talks and exhibition, we decided to focus on stories with a local connection, concentrating on the East Midlands, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, and more specifically Bromley House Library and its members.

The exhibition has been made possible by the generosity and enthusiasm of the library’s members, who have offered to loan their precious photographs and mementoes, and to tell the ‘stories’ behind their families’ experience of the Great War. It will be displayed in the Bromley House Gallery and in the main reading rooms, and will include two and three dimensional objects and artefacts, displayed alongside photographic images of those involved in the war – many of whom lost their lives.

The exhibition will be open to the public every Wednesday from 10th September, 10.30am – 4pm We have a diverse programme of subjects and speakers for our Saturday lectures (£5.00 pp) and Wednesday lunchtime talks, which we are also opening up to the public. The talks on Wednesdays are free but tickets need to be reserved in advance. Special Fair 4 Special Children Children love the fun and excitement that a Fairground brings, however, not all of them get the chance to experience that fun and excitement.

For physically challenged and special needs children the amount of enjoyment they receive from a day at the fair is just the same as for other children but the opportunities to experience that enjoyment are very limited. However, thanks to the generosity of Freemasons in Nottingham and Showmen who are members of the Showman’s Lodge in Loughborough about 250 such children were able to enjoy all the fun of the fair, at least for half a day, on Wednesday 20th August 2014, at Bramcote Hills Park. Michael McKean who runs McKean’s Fairground and is also a member of the Showman’s Lodge said: “For several years now we have been very pleased to offer our time and use of the fairground. Just the looks on the little kid’s faces makes it all worthwhile.”

The rides are set up to run at much slower speeds than normal and some of the dancing lights are toned down. The children also get to enjoy the usual hot dogs, beef burgers, candy floss and ice cream.

The two Nottinghamshire Lodges involved, Edwalton and St Giles, fundraise throughout the year to cover the cost of running the event and then give generously of their time on the day to make sure it is a safe and enjoyable event for all. The Masonic Charity ‘Teddies for Loving Care [TLC] Nottinghamshire’ also supports the day by ensuring that each special needs child leaves clutching their very own teddy.

Parents and children alike all said how much they had enjoyed the day and were already looking forward to next year.

Beeston Inner Wheel Club

Afternoon tea was held at President Sheila Chambers home to mark the beginning of her year of office in July when the presidential chain was handed over.

After a quiet time, suddenly a call went out from ourSecretary for a working party to remove badges from 21 blazers which had been donated to us. It was a condition that this should be done before we could then send them for overseas charities. This proved quite a task but as good Inner Wheel members we found a solution and the job was completed!

Recently a very successful and enjoyable coffee morning was held at the President’s home which raised a considerable sum for the Notts. & Lincs. Air Ambulance and a Nottingham children’s cancer trust. We have also responded to the appeal by knitting poppies for the Royal British Legion which were presented at the Nottingham Council House. They will be sold for £2 each and the money will go to the Royal British Legion Poppy appeal.

It is hoped to get a poppy for every life lost in Nottinghamshire in the First World War.

1 1/4 cups sugar 2 1/4 cups gluten-free all purpose flour mix (if your mix contains xanthan gum or guar gum don’t add the additional 1 teaspoon gum to the recipe) 1 teaspoon guar gum OR xanthan gum 1 tablespoon cinnamon 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 cups grated carrots (about 4 large carrots) 1 large peeled and shredded apple 8 ounces drained, crushed pineapple 3/4 cups raisins 1/2 cup shredded, sweetened coconut 1/2 cup coarsely chopped walnuts or pecans 3 large eggs 1 cup light olive oil OR canola oil 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Prep Time: 30 minutes Cook Time: 25 minutes Total Time: 55 minutes Preparation: Preheat oven to 350° F / 176° C Grease standard muffin pan or line with paper muffin cup liners.

In a large mixing bowl combine sugar, gluten-free flour blend, guar gum OR xanthan gum, cinnamon, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Use a large whisk to thoroughly combine.

In a separate large bowl combine shredded carrots, apples, crushed pineapple, raisins, coconut and nuts.

Stir to thoroughly mix.

Add the fruit, vegetable, nut mixture to the dry ingredients followed by eggs, oil and vanilla. Beat the mixture to thoroughly combine ingredients.

Fill muffin cups about 3/4 full. Bake in preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean.

Yield: About 2 dozen standard size muffins Reminder: Always make sure your work surfaces, utensils, pans and tools are free of gluten. Always read product labels.

Swan Canaries by The Arletty Theatre in Beeston - November July 1st 2014, was the 96th anniversary of the biggest explosion and the largest loss of civilian life this country has ever known, yet many people know nothing about it. That’s because it was essential to keep it quiet at the time, so as not to draw attention to the location of National Shell-Filling Factory No 6, Chilwell.

At around 7.10pm, eight tonnes of TNT detonated, killing 139 workers, and wounding over 250 more. The bravery of those who went straight back to help, or stayed, despite their injuries, to tend the casualties, was deemed worthy of the Victoria Cross, but sadly, it was never awarded. The survivors went back to work three days later, to ensure the supply of ammunition to the Front.

2014 marks a century since the beginning of The Great War. Arletty Theatre, a troupe funded by the Arts Council England, decided to bring some of our local war heroes to life on the stage.

Chilwell Canaries was the name for a group of amazing women who, in the First World War, filled bombs in a factory in Chilwell.

The Canary Girls were so named due to working with explosives, which stained their skin yellow.

Up to 19 million bombs were filled in the factory up until the 1 July 1918, when the factory exploded, killing many of the workers.

Swan Canaries tells the story about four women working at the factory in the lead up to the explosion, Rose, Mary, Polly and Violet. Polly is a young girl working in the factory whose fiance has been called to the front line. She is shown the ropes by his mother, Rose, who bears a secret about the boy.

The set is unusually bare and the actors rely on movement and song to bring the story to life, which gives the performance a homespun and engaging feel, reminiscent of the ‘make do’ attitude of the war.

The play holds a community vibe and in the interval the audience with their song sheets can join in with sing-a-long of old war songs, including It’s A Long Way To Tipperary and Pack All Your Troubles (In Your Old Kit Bag).

A very moving, harrowing, emotional and sometimes funny story is told. Swan Canaries masterfully examines the camaraderie between women from a small village working together for the good of the country.
