Love Food Hate Waste - Tips to save money!

Get familiar with your fridge and friendly with your freezer Start saving money right now by making a date with your fridge! Just by opening the fridge door and checking the ‘use by’ dates on what’s inside, you can begin saving your pennies and pounds. How often do you find that the ‘use by’ date on a packet of ham or bag of sausages has been and gone and you end up throwing it away? Meat, fish and ready meals are often the most expensive things we buy, so it helps to get into the habit of regularly checking the dates on perishable items in your fridge. Move them into the freezer if you don’t think you’ll have time to eat them or cook them for tonight’s supper.

Dairy products are often forgotten at the back of the fridge. Grate odd bits of cheddar and mix with breadcrumbs for a savoury topping or stir into mashed potatoes. Use up your yoghurts in fruit smoothies or as delicious toppings on breakfast cereals. The kids will love them.

When you get home with your shopping, it is a good idea to transfer as much as you can straight into the freezer. If you have large packets of chicken pieces or fish, divide them up and freeze individual portions.

Understanding food dates and what the ‘best before’ and ‘use by’ labels really mean is key to making the most of your fridge and freezer. Check out the facts about food dates and visit our fridge & freezer sections to learn more about getting your money’s worth.

Storecupboard Savvy Try and keep your storecupboard and freezer well-stocked with a variety of canned, dried and frozen goods that you know your family love to eat. Tinned beans, frozen vegetables, meat and fish and dried fruit, nuts, pasta & noodles, rice & grains, are all essentials with a long shelf life - meaning you will always have the ingredients standing by to pull together a delicious meal or to jazz up your leftovers.The trick is to replace items once you have used them up. It helps to keep a note stuck on the inside of the cupboard door - scribble down items as soon as you have finished them and check it when you write your shopping list.

Use your storecupboard to create meals from leftovers. Any spare fresh tomatoes could be added to some canned ones to make a great topping for pizza. Rice would turn leftover chicken and wrinkly peppers into a delicious summer salad. Add a tin of lentils to your minced meat to make it stretch further.

It pays to plan!

Planning your meals is one of the most effective ways you can cut wastage and food bills. Start by checking your fridge, freezer and store cupboard, and before you go shopping, write a list, so you don’t shop for things you already have. Get the kids to help and to suggest what meals they’d like to have that week. Then you can work out a weekly meal plan.

Lovely leftovers It’s amazing how many meals you can get from one chicken! If you enjoy a roast on Sunday, the remains of the joint would make a great curry or a delicious risotto later in the week and you’ll always find enough for a sandwich. If you have time, the carcass c can also be boiled up for stock and soups.

If you have some dinner left in the pan, bag it and pop it in the freezer as a ‘ready meal’ or one. Even the smallest amount could be pureed up for the baby or served as a kid’s portion for lunch the next day. Crusts and stale bread can be blitzed in the food processor to make breadcrumbs which can be stored in the freezer. The same can be done with cake or biscuits and used as a topping for crumbles and puddings. The last dregs of wine or beer can be frozen in ice cube trays and popped out into stews and casseroles hen cooking. Cut the bruises off old apples and toss into the pan with your sausages. Don’t throw out those black bananas - mash them up and add cream for a super-quick pudding the children will love.

Being crafty with your food is the clever way to save those pennies – and it really just means thinking before you throw. With a little bit of thought, you can create some delicious surprises from your leftovers - they don’t have to mean second best.

Care and Support at Home – Lifestyle factors and Dementia The news this morning revealed the result

of yet another study showing the steady rise of people who are overweight or obese within the general UK population and the risks to our health. When asked if they were overweight, most people who participated in the study stated they were not.

In the same way that what we eat not only contributes to our weight but has a direct impact on our health, a recent study published by Age UK reveals that lifestyle is responsible for up to 76% of changes in the ageing brain and in addition, that key lifestyle changes have the potential to reduce the risk of developing dementia by as much as 36%.

Given the latest estimates showing that dementia affects one in three people over the age of 65, it is vital to understand the key lifestyle changes which might have a positive effect and reduce the risk of developing dementia and / or slowing its development. The key lifestyle changes the study refers to include; • Regular physical exercise • A Mediterranean diet • Not smoking • Drinking alcohol in moderation • Preventing and treating diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity Physical exercise, such as aerobic, resistance or balance activity, was found to be the most effective way to ward off cognitive decline in healthy older people and to reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease (the most common form of dementia).

He went through all the different options available for inside my wardrobes as well as outside and it was a really enjoyable experience. It was very satisfying that somebody could take my ideas and make them into a reality for me to look at.

I was impressed with the designers knowledge with over 25 years experience he was able to give me some great ideas to save space, a built in linen cupboard in one wardrobe, drawers inside another and even shelves at the bottom for all those shoes of mine. Nothing was too much trouble and he even put my TV bracket on the wall for me, another great space saving idea we discussed.

STAR Bedrooms have lots of great offers on at the moment, my room was completed in a couple of days and they even gave me a new carpet for FREE. It was like having a beautiful new bedroom without any of the stress. I can’t promise to stop buying clothes and shoes but at least now i have the wardrobe space to put them in, and when I close my wardrobe doors my bedroom looks stunning and feels so spacious, calm and relaxing, just the way it should. Job hunting? The first thing to look at is your CV. Your CV is the introduction to your outstanding range of skills and your first chance to impress an employer or recruiter.

A good CV needs to outline your skills and suitability for a role On average, recruiters spend just eight seconds scanning a CV to see whether or not you're the one they are looking to employ. So make sure all the key information is upfront.

1. Tailor your CV Make sure you tailor your CV for every job you apply for. Read the job description and required skill set and ensure you list your key skils and experience first. Recruiters are faced with multiple CVs for every job they advertise. By making sure you have all of the key skills required for the role you'll immediately save them a whole lot of time and effort and ensure your CV goes to the top of the pile.

2. Keep it clear and concise Your CV should ideally be no longer than two pages of A4. Employers need to know about your skills and previous work experience so they can assess your suitability for the job on offer, but they have many CVs to read through in a day and won't be impressed with a long & detailed six-page history that includes your time doing irrelevant things etc.Rather than writing long paragraphs about time spent in a specific role, bullet point key bits of information. Address all of the key skills required in the job description but remember that your CV is only the first step. Save the detailed explanation of your suitability for the role for your job interview.

3. Don’t leave gaps or miss out information Leaving gaps in your career history just makes recruiters and prospective employers wonder what you were up to during that time. List any gaps in your career with a suitable explanation – whether it was a career break, travelling or having time to care for family etc.If you undertook any additional training during this period, make sure it’s listed alongside any other activity you undertook which may have helped develop other transferable skills such as communication, team work or project management.

4. Remove the errors and check spelling.

One of the main reasons for CV rejection is errors and spelling mistakes.

Always check your CV for basic spelling mistakes and grammatical errors – don’t just use your spellchecker, get a friend or relative to proof read your CV as well.

5. Tell the truth Always tell the truth about your skills and experience. If you don’t, you'll be caught out at some point – whether it’s during the interview process or, far worse, when you've actually got the job.

Most companies will check the facts you've stated like qualifications and previous employment history, but this also includes hobbies or interests you've listed.

More tips Once your CV is sent ....Be prepared.

Have a voice mail system in place and sign-up for a professional sounding email address. Consider getting a separate email account to use for your job search, so you can stay organized. Put your mobile phone number on your CV so you can follow up in a timely manner.

Always have an up-to-date CV ready to send - even if you are not currently looking for work. You never know when an opportunity that is too good to pass up might come along. If you’re not on LinkedIn yet, create a LinkedIn Profile and start making connections who can help you job search.

Don’t Wait. If you are laid-off, file for unemployment benefits right away. You will most likely be able to file online or by phone. Waiting could delay your benefits check.

Get Help. Utilize free or inexpensive services that provide career counseling and job search assistance such as college career offices, or your local public library.

Many libraries provide workshops, programs, classes, computers and printers you can use, and other resources to help you with your job search.

Create Your Own Templates. Have copies of your resume and cover letter ready to edit. That way you can change the content to match the requirements of the job you’re applying for, but, the contact information and your opening and closing paragraphs won’t need to be changed. Microsoft Word users can download free templates for resumes, cover letters and email messages which can be personalized for your own correspondence. Jobs by Email. Let the jobs come to you. Use job alerts to sign up and receive job listings by email. All the major job sites have search agents and some websites and apps specialize in sending announcements.

References Ready. Have a list of three references including name, job title, company, phone number and email address ready to give to interviewers. Print a copy of your reference list and bring it with you to interviews.

Flora Lively Investigates – Murder at the Maples by Joanne Phillips This is (hopefully) just the first book in a new detective series. Flora Lively is the owner of a removal firm, inherited from her father. Times are hard and a new national firm are moving into the town, so keeping their only client The Maples happy becomes very important. However, all at The Maples retirement home is not as it seems and Flora becomes embroiled in a series of sinister and strange events. The story manages to move between the various unsatisfactory relationships that Flora has with ease and the large number of characters is developed with skill, the story moves along quickly and is a very easy read. Flora is a very likeable character and the other characters are well formed and easy to imagine, it would translate well to a Sunday night family drama. The outcomes are not especially surprising but sometimes it’s nice to read a book that isn’t shocking, has no bad language and no sex. Joanne Phillips has written two other family dramas, you might enjoy Can’t Live Without and its sequel The Family Trap.

Christopher Nibble by Charlotte Lively CHILDREN’S CHOICE

This is an enchanting character, a guinea pig faced with the extinction of dandelions… but Christopher happens across a seed and has to decide whether to keep it for himself (he really loves dandelions) or share it with his local community. It’s a lovely tale, with beautiful illustrations, about caring for others, sharing and gardening.

Local Broxtowe Green Party Candidate Pledges Support for Local Pubs and Brewers David Kirwan, local Green Party General Election candidate for Broxtowe has pledged to support local pubs and breweries.

The three pledges are highlighted in the Manifesto for Pubs and Real Ale by CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, which sets out a package of reforms they are seeking from the next Government. These important pledges are to: • • •

Support well-run community pubs Promote Britain’s breweries Represent pub goers and beer drinkers.

Tim Page, CAMRA’s Chief Executive welcomed David’s support, saying: “We are delighted that David Kirwan has pledged his support for pubs, breweries and consumers. As, on average, 31 pubs close each week it is absolutely vital that our elected representatives recognise and champion the value of these important community assets, and work to protect them.

“CAMRA is urging the next Government to act to ensure that pubs are better protected in the planning system, that large pub companies treat their licensees fairly and that beer duty is set at a level which supports UK brewing.”

David Kirwan added: “I am proud to be speaking up for pubs and real ale. Well-run community pubs play a crucial role in local life and make a huge contribution to the local economy – with each injecting around £80,000 to the local area every year.

If elected, I will continue to show my support in Parliament.”

Lakeside Arts - The Vikings then and now British Museum curator Dr Gareth Williams is a specialist on Viking coins and exchange systems, and on Viking warfare and military organisation. LETS BAKE!- CUSTARD TART Alternative Ideas for Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and like any meal can easily run out of ideas and bored with the usual cereals, toast, etc.

For the weekend when time is on our side, it’s sometime nice to make a breakfast that’s both nutritious and different, more healthy than the tradtional Sunday fry up!

It doesn’t get much easier or more nutritious than a veggie-filled frittata. This one is packed with onions, garlic, spinach and mushrooms, and requires only 5 minutes of prep and 15 minutes in the oven. The combination of whole eggs and egg whites makes for a lighter frittata, but if you want to cut back on the fat even more, use a little less cheese, or a choose a light or low-fat feta. Don’t skip the cheese altogether though — it adds a wonderfully tangy and creamy element to the frittata, not to mention a hit of calcium.

Spinach & Mushroom Frittata INGREDIENTS 1 tbsp olive oil 1 cup of mushrooms, cleaned and sliced ½ small white onion, chopped 1 clove fresh garlic, minced 2 cups of spinach, washed and dried 3 cup feta cheese cubes 4 eggs 2 egg whites INSTRUCTIONS Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees F. Place the mushrooms in a microwave safe bowl with a teaspoon of water and microwave on high for 2-3 minutes, until they have shrunk and softened up.

Drain the water and place to the side.

Fry the onions and garlic in a cast iron skillet (or an oven proof skillet of any kind) until translucent and soft. Add in the spinach and cook until wilted.

Whisk together the eggs and egg whites until combined then mix in the mushrooms.

Pour over the onion mixture in the skillet.

Crumble the cubes of feta over the top. (I like to leave some whole as well, I love feta!)

Place the skillet in the preheated oven and bake for 15 minutes, until the eggs are completely cooked in the centre of the skillet.
