Boys in The Woods Councillors John McGrath and Richard MacRae along with an Officer from Broxtowe Borough Council met mountain bikers in Stapleford Woods earlier today to finalise words for a code of conduct for the site. This will be the basic rules for general cycling and will go on signage in the designated area.

The designated area will also be clearly identified by smaller signs at strategic points around the perimeter. The signs are in stock and posts are on order.

In addition to this Broxtowe Borough Council will agree a more detailed code of practice which the group will sign up to. This will include what can and cannot be done in terms of digging and trail construction.

To protect walkers the designated bike area has been created to avoid the public rights of way passing through the site. In addition signs will be placed at entrance points to the open space warning of cycling and showing the designated area on a plan. STAPLEFORD COMMUNITY GROUP EVENT- a huge success!

The event was part of the local Super Kitchen Network which uses donated food which would otherwise be destroyed and end up in landfill sites.

We would also like to thank Dig-In Community Allotment and Bramcote Farm Shop who donated Food for the meals.

Of course none of this would have been possible if it wasn’t for the excellent work of the brilliant Pulp Friction CIC and of course the Volunteers from Stapleford who came to help too.

We were joined by Miss Teen Galaxy Nottingham 2016/17 Emily Redfern, who said:-“Today I’ve made an appearance at The Super Kitchen which is hosted by Stapleford Community Group.

I’ve helped to prep the food, welcomed the community in, served the food out to the guests and most importantly cleared up.I feel blessed to be part of such an amazing community who gather together even on the bank holiday weekend.During this event I was able to share my pageant knowledge to both the younger generation and old generation, in which both seemed intrigued in what pageant girls get up to daily.” United Kingdom Galaxy Pageants Pageant Girl – UK Pageant Organisers Stapleford Community Group.

Stapleford Community Group are now going to look into organising these sessions on a more regular basic as there is such a need for this kind of event. It was great to see so many people not only enjoying a nice meal but also chatting together and making new friends too. BRAMCOTE CHRISTMAS SERVICE TO REMEMBER LOVED ONES FAMILIES AND FRIENDS can remember their loved ones during the Festive Season at the annual Christmas Service of Remembrance at the Bramcote Crematorium on Sunday 4th December.

The service starts at 2.00pm in the Serenity chapel and will be led by Reverend Michael Grantham.

The service, which has become a poignant feature in the Crematorium’s calendar will last about an hour and include readings, prayers and Carols, with musical contributions from Soloist Sarah Carlin.

On arrival at the chapel, members of the congregation will be invited to light a candle in memory of their loved ones, whose names can also be read out during the act of remembrance, if the family so wish.

This service has become a very popular event and can attract a large attendance. It is recommended that people arrive early to ensure a seat within the chapel and children of all ages are Bramcote Crematorium

18 things I’ve learnt in 18 years Birthday Edition As I will be turning 18 this month, I thought it would be fitting to take a different approach and write about 18 things I have learnt in 18 years. On reflection, I realised that there are many aspects in life that we take for granted. So here goes…

1. Family is very important.

Not all friendships last forever, but blood relations do. In close families, they will always be there to support you unconditionally. Don’t take family for granted.

2. Appreciate your friends.

I love the saying ‘friends are like stars, you might not always see them, but you know they’re always there’. So cliché, but so true. Know who your true friends are and stick by them. They will be your forever friends.

3. No one is ugly.

As I look around, no one stands out as being ugly. Everyone is unique and everyone has their own quirks. I 26

think some people are quick to judge people on their appearance before they get to know them. Beauty shines from within.

4.…But some people have an ugly heart.

Avoid these people. If you suspect that someone has bad intentions and this is proven to be true, don’t waste your time on them and don’t feel guilty letting them go. You need positive and kind people in your life.

5. Appreciate the little things in life.

The ‘hello!’ from your neighbour in the morning, the colour of the sky when the sun sets, the sound of the people you love laughing. Appreciate these things.

6. Cheese goes with everything!

You can put cheese on crackers, beans on toast, pasta, you name it.

Cheese will go with it!

7. Hard work is the key to success.

Those who think success is handed to people on a plate are wrong.

People work to get where they are.

Creating opportunities takes time and dedication and many people wouldn’t be where they are today without hard work.

8. My level of success compared to the next person’s is irrelevant.

their chapter 10’. Everyone is at a different chapter of their lives and so your success level will always be different to the next persons.

9. Grab every opportunity with both hands Take every opportunity that presents itself. You never know what may come of it. It might work out, it might not.

There’s no harm in trying.

10. Actions speak louder than words Don’t always trust what people may tell you. Someone can tell you that they care, but don’t believe it until they show it. Then you will know if they really meant it.

11. You can’t please everyone Not everyone likes pizza and not everyone likes chocolate. If these can’t please everyone, then neither can you.

Appreciate the people who love you for who you are.

12. Don’t be afraid to question things.

If something doesn’t seem right to you, question it. If you feel you have been mistreated, question it. If someone doesn’t seem themselves, question them.

This takes me onto my next point…

13. Listen. Always Listening is so important. Don’t be someone who doesn’t consider others. If a friend wants to confide in you, listen to them. Listening is a valuable skill many of us take for granted. Sometimes, having someone listen to you is all you need to feel better.

14. Don’t feel pressured to grow up.

Keep hold of your inner child for as long as possible. Society tells us to grow up and be responsible. Yes, do this. But

take that inner childish spark to the end of your life. Sometimes the best memories are made when your inner child emerges.

15. Never say never I go by this saying an awful lot. Don’t doubt anything; you never know what is around the next corner.

16. Take time to be proud of yourself In today’s society, we achieve so much, but spend so little time recognising what we do. We are always moving on to the next big project, taking the next leap.

Take a moment to think back to this time last year and think of everything you have achieved. Be proud.

17. Your happiness is key Often, we go around trying to make everyone else happy and forget about our own personal happiness. Help people out, but don’t let it take over your life. Your health and wellbeing is the most important.

18. Learning never ends.

The list of things I have learnt so far is much longer than 18 points, but I selected the ones which I thought were the most important to me. Every day we are learning. No matter how old you are, you will learn something new every single day.

HELP BALANCE BROXTOWE’S BUDGET HOW WOULD YOU SAVE £2.2 million? Broxtowe residents are being urged to help shape the Council’s budget for 2017/18 as part of a consultation.

The consultation, which is available online at www.broxtowe.gov.uk/ budgetconsultation asks residents to rate services they receive from the Council, what methods they would prefer the Council to implement to save the £2.2 million is needs to save over the next three years, as well as providing an opportunity to give their ideas on how the Council can continue to offer high quality services whilst balancing the books.

Chair of the Finance and Resources Committee, Councillor Paul Simpson said: “With government grant expected to reduce to zero by 2019/20, there are challenging times and difficult decisions ahead for the Council. We aim to rise to this challenge and need our residents to help us by sharing their views on where they want us to spend and save their money.”

Worlds Apart by Azi Ahmed This is an interesting memoir of a Muslim woman and her early to mid-life. It is a useful and well written reflection on life in Britain during the 90’s for a Muslim girl growing up in a traditional family, but with very unconventional views of the world. What’s particularly unusual is that Ahmed decides to join the training for the Territorial SAS (albeit unexpectedly) Her experiences are very raw and painful, she is the most tenacious and naïve person which makes for a fascinating read. Her life after the SAS training is also unusual as she looks to become an MP—a story that is yet to be concluded. The book is well paced and Ahmed is a likeable character, but it’s lacking in depth and I would have liked to learn more about her fathers' early life, her sister and her mother. Although her SAS experience is extraordinary, for me it didn’t completely make sense, but I don’t want to give away any spoilers! It’s Well worth a read.

Children’s Choice Not Enough for Queen Fluff by Rachel Lyon It’s another Rachel Lyon book, but we love her! This is an important tale about humility and grace, things that children often struggle with , and which are hard to explain. Queen Fluff is very demanding and rude. Her expectations are high and her visit to meet the other bunnies in the Kingdom reminds her that there are more important things in life than money and palaces.

The illustrations by Catalina Echeverri are wonderful, and the rhyming text rolls of the tongue.

BRONZE AWARD FOR BROXTOWE NEIGHBOURHOOD WARDENS BROXTOWE BOROUGH COUNCIL’S Neighbourhood Wardens have been awarded bronze in the Community Animal Welfare Footprints and RSPCA Innovator awards for their stray dog service for the second year running.

The Bronze Stray Dog Footprint award is recognition of the team, which is made up of 2 full time and 2 part time Neighbourhood Wardens, and their work to ensure stray dog welfare during the collection and kennelling processes, proactive work to educate owners, and preventative measures to reduce both straying and long-term strays.

The team were assessed on a number of things including basic dog handling, health and safety, the treatment of injured or sick stray dogs, their out of hours service and education of owners.

Chair of the Environment and Community Safety Committee, Councillor Mia Kee said: “The Neighbourhood Wardens do fantastic work to improve the welfare of stray dogs they find in the Borough. To win this award for the second year running is credit to them.”

SLOW COOKER RECIPES Beef Curry Preparation time - less than 30 mins Cooking time over 8 hours on low Serves 4-6 Ingredients 4 tbsp sunflower oil 800g/1lb 12oz beef braising steak, cut into 2.5cm/1in pieces 2 onions, finely chopped 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped 2 chillies, finely chopped, plus extra to taste 2.5cm/1in piece fresh root ginger 4 tsp ground cumin 4 tsp ground coriander 2 tsp ground turmeric 2 x 400g/14oz can chopped tomatoes 2 tsp garam masala 200g/7oz natural yoghurt small handful fresh chopped coriander (optional) Method Heat half of the oil in a frying pan and fry the beef pieces for 4-5 minutes, or until browned all over. (You may need to brown the meat in batches.) Tip the browned meat into the slow cooker.

Heat the remaining oil in a frying pan and fry the onions for five minutes, then add the garlic, chilli and ginger and fry for another 2-3 minutes. Add the spices and fry for another minute, then tip the mixture into the slow cooker.

Add the chopped tomatoes to the slow cooker, then fill one of the empty cans with water and add the water to the slow cooker.

Stir everything together, pressing down so that everything is covered in liquid and cook for 8-10 hours on low.

About 30 minutes before serving, stir in the garam masala and yoghurt and season to taste with salt and a little more chilli. Cook for a further 30 minutes, then stir in the coriander. Serve with rice and nan bread.

Alternatively, you can cook this curry on the hob for 2-3 hours on a low heat, or until the beef is very tender.

Funeral director Alan marks 10 years working as the UK’s only mountain rescue team chaplain A Stapleford funeral director who spends his weekdays organising services for bereaved families will mark 10 years’ service in a very different role this month (September) – as the UK’s only chaplain for a mountain rescue team. Alan Winfield, who works for Gillotts Funeral Directors in Derby Road, has spent his spare time for the last decade on call for Derby Mountain Rescue, ready to join an emergency mission if required. Alan, 58, is believed to be the only person in the country who acts as a chaplain for mountain rescue and his duties include offering troubled colleagues a listening ear or calming the fears of family members worrying about a missing loved one. Derby Mountain Rescue covers the southern reaches of the Peak District, west Nottinghamshire and Derby itself and much of its work involves rescuing injured walkers and searching for people who have gone missing from their homes. Everyone who works for the group is a volunteer and although Alan is fully trained and does attend call-outs, he does not attend as many as other members, giving up his hours as chaplain and as the group’s secretary instead.On the face of it, you could not get two more contrasting roles than that of undertaker and saviour, but Alan, who has worked in the funeral industry for 37 years, says that there are far more similarities than there are differences, not least because both role are dedicated to the same ultimate aim – making people feel better at a difficult time. He is a licensed reader for the Church of England and was invited to become chaplain by the late Steve Hilditch, the former team leader of Derby Mountain Rescue, who felt that the group needed someone who could give emotional support to members and the families of the people they helped. Alan said: “When the team are working, the adrenaline’s going and their training kicks in but it’s only when the

adrenaline subsides, or maybe even weeks later, that people come to terms with what they’ve seen and experienced, which may be something distressing like a deceased person.I am used to working with death, but I understand that for many members of the team, it is something that they will never have come across before and the first time they are confronted by a deceased person can be a shock. My other role on searches can often be talking to the families. I can find out useful information or talk through their feelings of anger or guilt, which helps them deal with the situation and allows the rest of the team to get on with their job.” Alternatively, if Alan is out on a call and the team finds a deceased person, then he will always volunteer to help remove their body. He said: “It is the last thing that our team can ever do for that person, we are delivering them back to their family and that will hopefully give them closure, in the same way that working with a family and conducting a funeral gives them closure.I am very proud to have reached 10 years as chaplain for Derby Mountain Rescue.

I find both roles hugely rewarding and I enjoy the feeling of satisfaction from walking away knowing that I have helped someone’s family at the lowest point in their lives, or seeing a team member going back out to do what they are there to do.” Gillotts’ Stapleford office is one of five funeral homes operated by the firm, alongside offices in Eastwood, Kimberley, Selston and Heanor in Derbyshire.

Jyoti’s appointment is the Council’s first step towards developing a Social Lettings Agency which will help meet the demand for good quality rented accommodation in the Borough by developing good working relationships with private landlords in the area. “I’m excited to be working with local landlords to increase the options available to people in housing need. I hope to be working with responsible landlords in the Borough who share our aspiration for stable, affordable tenancies in quality properties” said Jyoti.

The Council have worked in partnership with landlords in the private sector for a number of years and the Agency will further develop these links by offering private landlords a free health and safety inspection of their property, a Deposit Guarantee Scheme and a tenant finder service or a full property management service.
