How time flies and summer is here!

Summer is a wonderful time in the garden as flowers are starting to appear in abundance and in the vegetable garden some things are starting to be harvested such as early new potatoes, oh I do love this time of year and with the longest day this month we have to make the most of the extra light and warmth so enjoy and happy gardening everybody!

In this months issue…

Here are some jobs for you to do in your garden this month…

There is still time to plant runner beans - sow them directly in the ground now Although fruit trees will naturally shed some fruit (called the 'June drop'), aim to thin out congested branches further for bigger and better fruits In the greenhouse, open vents and doors on warm days and dampen down on hot days to increase humidity.

If the weather turns very dry, set your mower blades higher to reduce stress on your lawn.

Plant out annual summer bedding plants now the risk of frost has passed.

Turn the compost in your bins every month to keep it well aerated, give it a little water if dry .

Prune flowering shrubs such as Deutzia, Kolkwitzia, Weigela and Philadelphus after they have finished flowering.

Keep newly planted trees and shrubs well watered whilst they establish a strong root system.

Continue to earth up potatoes as they grow. If you're growing potatoes in tubs just add more compost to half way up the plant stem.

Clip the new growth of evergreen hedges such as Privet, Box and Yew to keep them in shape.

Gardener Steve‛s Plant of the Month ROSA ‘DEEP SECRET’ (rose 'Deep Secret')

Rosa can be deciduous or semi-evergreen shrubs or scrambling climbers, with usually thorny stems bearing pinnate leaves and solitary or clustered, 5-petalled flowers followed by showy red fruits (hips) Deep Secret is a stunning rose and probably one of the darkest of the hybrid tea, or large-flowered bush roses which are upright, thorny shrubs with large, usually glossy leaves and large, double often fragrant and rounded double deep crimson flowers are 10cm across, in summer and autumn as with a number of the dark red roses, it is richly scented. they can be grown in many different situations such as flower borders and beds, courtyard and cottage gardens.

Flowering period: Summer & Autumn

Height and Spread: 1m x 75cm (3ft x 1.5ft) Position: Full sun Soil: Any soil but well drained. Hardiness: Hardy Propagation: Hardwood cuttings in autumn or by budding in summer Pruning: Deadhead faded flowers to encourage flowering, follow RHS pruning guide for hybrid teas. Pest and Diseases: Aphids, leafhoppers, caterpillars and rose leaf-rolling sawfly, black spot, rose rust, powdery mildews and downy mildews may be a problem.

There is small scale “model gardens” which are intended to show visitors what they can achieve in their own gardens, and a trials field where new cultivars are assessed. 2019 see’s the completion of the new multi-million pound Welcome building so hopefully we will be some of the first to see it. The surrounding landscape has transformed the entrance to Wisley, putting design, plants and horticulture at the forefront for visitors to enjoy.The first phase of Wisley’s transformation features a beautiful, spacious and airy arrivals hall with a 100-seater restaurant, café and gift shop. The indoor and outdoor Plant Centre has been expanded to perfectly meet the needs of gardeners who have just started growing, as well as those who have been growing for years.

Gluten free cupcakes These easy gluten-free cupcakes are a delicious option if you're on a gluten-free diet. They're so easy to make and taste just like the real thing.

Ingredients 125g Butter, melted 125g caster sugar 125g gluten-free self-raising flour 2 medium eggs 3tbsp milk Few drops of vanilla extract 2 medium egg whites 150g Caster sugar 100g butter, softened Few drops of vanilla extract Royal icing sprinkles 12-hole bun tray, lined with paper cases Large piping bag, fitted with star-shape piping tube

Simple to bake, these pretty, gluten-free cupcakes are perfect for kids’ parties or to enjoy with a cup of tea. This recipe makes 12 cupcakes and will take around 40 mins to prepare and bake. This recipe uses glutenfree flour and is flavoured with a few drops of vanilla extract. Top your cupcakes with tasty buttercream and serve immediately.

You can decorate however you wish and you can get the kids to help too. If any left, these can be stored in an airtight container or cake tin for up to 2 or 3 days – if they last that long!

Method Set the oven to 190°C.- Pour the melted butter into a bowl and add sugar, flour, eggs, milk and vanilla extract. Beat the mixture, preferably with an electric hand whisk, to give a smooth batter which may appear a little runnier than a usual sponge-cake mixture. Spoon mixture into the paper cases in the bun tray. Bake cakes in the centre of oven for 18-20 mins, or until they’ve risen and are light golden. Remove tray from the oven and leave cakes to cool for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

To make the buttercream: Place egg whites and sugar in a bowl over a pan of hot water.

Stir until sugar dissolves completely. Remove the bowl from over the pan and whisk the egg whites until stiff. Gradually whisk in the butter and then the vanilla. The mixture may appear to separate, but keep whisking it at a high speed until it’s light and fluffy – this is easiest done in a table-top food mixer, but can be done with an electric hand whisk.

Fill the piping bag with the buttercream and pipe a swirl on top of each cupcake.

Scatter over the icing sprinkles. Keep the cupcakes cool until serving them.

They are best eaten within 2 days of making. (Not suitable for freezing).

Europe Direct East Midlands (North) Walk-in Centre Launch.

Citizens Advice Broxtowe (CAB) are pleased to announce the launch of Europe Direct East Midlands (North) Walkin Centre. The project, co-funded by the European Union (EU) and Broxtowe Borough Council is being set up to keep people informed about EU topics and help people and businesses prepare as the UK’s relationship with the European Union changes.

Most importantly, it will act as an information point for EU citizens who live and work in the UK and need help to register under the EU Settlement Scheme.

The Government recently made funds available to local authorities to help them prepare for Brexit and supporting this project forms part of Broxtowe’s response.

Neil Clurow, CAB’s Development Manager explains: “Europe Direct is an important first contact to find out about the EU. We are here for everyone irrespective of their views on Brexit. With the continued uncertainties during the extension of Article 50 and not knowing who will be the UK’s Prime Minister during the period until 31st October it is even more important that EU citizens living and working in the UK register under the EU Settlement Scheme before the UK leaves the EU. We are here to help them if they or their families assistance with registration.”

Europe Direct East Midlands (North) has been operating since January 2018 but the Walk-in Centre, based at the Citizens Advice office in Beeston is new and a response to the increasing requests for help.

The project is one of 12 Europe Direct services in the UK. Anyone can sign up to receive regular free updates about the EU and Brexit by completing the online subscription on the website or emailing europedirect@broxtowe.cab.org.uk.

Have Your Say On Broxtowe Parks How is your local park or open space performing? Broxtowe residents are being encouraged to get online and have their say on a selection of the parks and open spaces in Borough to help ensure they meet the ‘Broxtowe Standard’.

The questionnaire is available at www.broxtowe.gov.uk/parkssurvey and asks residents to rate their chosen parks or open spaces on a number of areas including how welcoming they are, signage, cleanliness, access and facilities available.

“We know that our residents share our love for our parks and want to keep improving them for future generations to enjoy. In the last year the Council has spent £589,500 on parks across the Borough thanks to its Pride In Parks Initiative and the help of external funding. This year, even more parks are set to benefit from the initiative which aims to ensure that residents across the Borough have an opportunity to enjoy quality open space and play facilities, so we’re really keen to hear from as many people as possible to help inform our improvement programme,” said Councillor Helen Skinner, Chair of the Leisure and Environment Committee.

Following last year’s consultation, the Council have listened to residents and have made many improvements including: Bramcote Hills Park, Bramcote – Park users told us that some of the fitness equipment needed replacing. We recently installed 2 new items for people to use.

Chetwynd Road Recreation Ground, Chilwell – Following comments from residents, a new access barrier has been installed to make the entrance more secure.

Jubilee Park, Eastwood – The Play Area surfacing was washed and repaired Mansfield Road Recreation Ground, Eastwood – Responses from last year’s survey suggested the area was in need of upgrading. Thanks to Pride in Parks, a £26,000 scheme of improvements was completed in late 2018.

Hall Om Wong Park, Kimberley – Park users told us that the play area needed refreshing and that some of the access routes needed improving. Following the consultation, we’re submitting a bid for £50,000 for works to improve these areas.

Hickings Lane, Stapleford – A successful bid for external funding has allowed for a major makeover of the park including a new Multi-Use Games Area and a fully renovated Play Area.

Queen Elizabeth Park, Stapleford – Visitors to the park said that paths needed improving. Repairs have been undertaken and the access from the entrance on Toton Lane is much improved.

Silver Surfers The Silver Surfer project is run by a group of volunteers seeking to provide a safe social environment where older members of the local community can meet together to explore many of the possibilities provided by accessing the internet; email, surfing, Skype etc. With over 9 million adults who have never made use of the internet, Silver Surfers is designed to provide secure access and a simple introduction to the world of IT for older adults within the local community. Based around a café environment drop-in centre, individuals are encouraged to learn and support one another through one-on-one training and mentoring.

When and where do we meet?

Thursday afternoons between 1:00pm and 3:00pm in the St Michael and AllAngels Parish Church - Bramcote, Church Centre.There is a small weekly charge of £3.00 to cover the cost of refreshments, helpful books and magazines, and the provision of the necessary technical facilities. Each individual who attends will be provided with a detailed workbook, and encouraged to maintain a personal progress log. Heroes Honoured For Armed Forces Day Soldiers joined the Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Michael Brown to raised a specially commissioned Armed Forces Day Flag in Beeston on Monday 24th June, to mark a week of events that was being held across the country.

Representatives from the army joined the Mayor to raise the Armed Forces Flag.Soldiers from 170 (Infrastructure Support) Engineer Group Royal Engineers joined Councillor Brown to raise the flag and address representatives from the Royal British Legion, Forces in the Community, Freemen, Aldermen, Past Mayors, Councillors and members of the public to show support and recognise the contributions of all those who serve or have served in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces.

At the same time, local authorities, members of the public, businesses and schools throughout the country also raised their own Armed Forces Day flags to honour the nation’s servicemen and women.

Care and Support at Home – The Care Crisis Once again, as so often happens, a BBC Panorama programme brings us news of the ever impending crisis in care and the impact this crisis has and will have on those needing care as well as those providing the care. Despite many studies carried out to assess the present and future UK care requirements, the government continues to procrastinate and unload the burden on local councils.

In July 2010 the government set up the Dilnot commission. An independent body tasked with reviewing care and support funding in England. Andrew Dilnot, chair of the commission said at the time; the issue of funding for adult social care has been ignored for too long. We should be celebrating the fact we are living longer and that younger people with disabilities are leading more independent lives than ever before.

But instead we talk about the ‘burden of ageing’ and individuals are living in fear, worrying about meeting their care costs.

The commission built on the extensive body of work already done in this area and carried out new analysis before providing advice and recommendations on how to reform the system to government on 4 July 2011. The recommendations included but were not limited to; A cap on individuals’ lifetime contributions towards the social care costs to avoid individuals having to spend all their savings and assets to fund their care A higher means-tested threshold, above which people are liable for their full care costs.

A national eligibility criteria and portable assessments to ensure greater consistency Initial reactions from the then coalition government, although welcoming, were focused on the cost of implementation and simply stated that the report was a “starting point”. Most charities and organizations supporting the elderly called for the implementation of Dilnot’s recommendations arguing that they were not only necessary but fundamental to the development of a fairer and better funded system.

In 2012, I wrote; whether because of pressure from charities and care organizations or more likely, because of the dissatisfaction with coalition policies and the pressure to win back some voters, at least some of the recommendations might become a reality, even though we might have to wait until 2017!

Unfortunately 2017 has come and gone and none of the recommendations have been implemented. Instead the government argues that it has increased the budget for social care however; councils struggle to meet demand and are forced to make very

A Message from Stapleford Community Group.

We have now passed the 20,000 mark for the amount of meals we have handed out from collecting surplus food donations.

That is over 20,000 meals worth of food which would have gone in the bin.

It has instead been given out to those in need.

So where do we get the goods from?

We collect from Lidl in Sandiacre on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

We collect from The Coop in Sandiacre on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

We collect from Aldi in Strelley on Wednesday and Thursday.

We collect from Tesco in Toton on Tuesday and Tesco in Beeston on Friday.

So what do we do with the surplus food?

We take the surplus food donations to The Helpful Bureau, Early Years Playgroup, Sparkle Daycare Nursery, Stapleford Youth Club, Broxtowe Youth Homelessness, Church@MontroseCourt, The Haven Centre, the local Independent Living Schemes.

We also make donations to the various street kitchens in both Nottingham and Derby City Centres. We have even taken donations to a street kitchen in Birmingham.

We have even delivered food to those who are unable to collect from the various drop off points.

But there is even more food out there and to be able to make collections and then get it to those in need, we need a van, we would love something like a Vauxhall Vivaro, 6 seater version. So we can get the volunteers in the vehicle and also get the food in the back too.

Stapleford Community Group is all about ‘Bringing Unity To The Community’.

What better way to do this than helping people with food?

20,000 you must agree is a lot of food and we would like to thank the businesses who make the kind donations and the volunteers who help with the project which we have now called the #StaplefordFoodProject

Protect Your Garden This Summer Broxtowe residents are being reminded to protect their gardens as well as their homes this summer to prevent opportunists from stealing valuable tools and equipment. “Garden crime is an unfortunate reality. Although many of us take steps to protect our homes and the property inside them, we leave valuable equipment in gardens and unsecured sheds, providing easy pickings for opportunist thieves. There are some simple but effective tips that you can follow to protect yourself so you can enjoy the summer season� said Councillor Greg Marshall, Chair of the Community Safety Committee.

Power tools, lawn mowers, garden tools and bikes are just some of the expensive equipment stored in sheds which are not strong or secure enough to protect them. If stolen some of these items could be used by the intruder to break into your house.

Effective garden security includes everything from boundary fences, gates, outbuildings and the valuables stored inside them.

Follow the tips below to protect your property from garden thieves.

Fit well positioned external lighting Strong gates, fences and walls kept in good repair can deter intruders from accessing your property, keep gates locked at all times Compliment security measures, such as lighting, locks and alarms by planting prickly plants to deter burglars.

If doing so it is best to plant these around vulnerable areas such as: windows, fences, boundary walls and drainpipes.

Most garden sheds are not designed for safe storage.

Ideally, expensive items such as power tools, mowers, garden tools and bicycles should not be stored in them However, if you have no alternative, here are some shed security tips: Keep your shed in good condition.

Fit a closed shackle padlock to the door - fittings should be bolted through the door and any screws concealed.

Fit grilles or mesh to the windows.

Fit a shed alarm.

Chain large items such as bicycles together - it is more difficult for a thief to carry away a lot of large heavy items all at once.

Lock ladders to a secure fixture in the shed or garage so they cannot be used to reach windows in your home.

Mark your garden tools and equipment with your postcode and house name or number.

Don’t leave ladders and tools lying around in your garden - these could be used to break into your home.

By raising awareness and increasing vigilance everyone can help to reduce crime, so remember: Lock all doors even when you’re at home and remove keys from locks.

Close all windows when you go out and close windows in unoccupied rooms even when you’re at home.

Do not leave keys on show within your home, keep them with you where possible or in an agreed concealed location within your home.

This reduces the likelihood of burglary/theft of vehicle but also enables occupants to access keys easily allowing them to leave the home promptly in an emergency.

When leaving your vehicle, lock it, close windows/sunroof and don’t leave anything on display.

When shopping make sure your handbag, purse or wallet is secure and out of sight, never leave your bag unattended.

When leaving your cycle unattended secure it to an immovable object with a good quality lock in a well lit, busy area.

Doves stepped off stage in 2010 and Jimi Goodwin, Andy and Jez Williams went their separate ways for an indefinite period. Yet the lines between them remained connected and their three-decade long friendship persisted as the hiatus drew on.

In the absence of a plan, the next chapter began to fall into place and in 2018 they announced their long-awaited return. The deafening response to the news that Doves would play their cherished songs again has set the optimistic course for what lies ahead.

Call The Comet is his third solo album. Recorded over nine months in his new studio and HQ just outside Manchester, it’s a vivid, immersive, brilliantly evocative record, which develops the music explored on its two predecessors – 2013’s The Messenger, and Playland, released in 2014 – and adds a new emphasis on atmosphere and drama. In response to our confused, fretful times, many of its songs look to ideas of an alternative society and utopian futures, while retaining an all-important openness and sense of mystery. Most obviously, the album is also full of the pre-requisites of compelling music, which Marr understands as a matter of instinct.“Everybody who knows about rock music knows who I am,” he says. “They know what my values are. So they don’t need my songs to be any kind of exposition. They want good riffs, and good singing, and good guitar music.”

The Coral

The Coral’s past speaks volumes having sold over a million UK albums since their debut EP release in 2001, five of those hitting the top ten, including the chart-topping Magic and Medicine (2003) and eight top 40 singles. Without so much as a glance over their shoulder, James Skelly (vocals/guitars), Ian Skelly (drums/ percussion/vocals), Nick Power (keyboard/ vocals), Paul Duffy (bass/keyboards/vocals) and Paul Molloy (guitars) stride into the future to fortify their indefinable position in modern music. There are no full stops in The Coral’s story, but their return with a seventh album, Distance Inbetween in 2016 turns a distinct new page within it after an unapologetic five year hiatus. Picking up the band’s story from the release of 2010’s Butterfly House, theirs is a tale of uninterrupted individual creativity punctuated by the surprise release of their lost album, The Curse of Love (2014).

A collective for whom permanence is defined by bonds stronger than music, The Coral encouraged each other to go exploring alone after a relentless decade of activity. James Skelly wrote and recorded Love Undercover (2013), establishing his Skeleton Key record label and producing songs for bands including Blossoms, Sundowners and She Drew The Gun. £5 million fund to develop support for unpaid carers.

The £5 million Carers Innovation Fund will invest in innovative ways of supporting unpaid carers, outside of mainstream health and care services.

This funding will be used to improve support across the country and help build more carerfriendly communities.

Examples of the kind of projects the fund would invest in include: technology platforms – for example, to help carers to take a break from their caring responsibilities support groups – like carers’ cafes and Men’s Sheds, which develop peer support groups and offer short courses to help reduce isolation Projects will be expected to show a positive effect on: carers’ health and wellbeing carers’ ability to manage work alongside caring responsibilities carers’ ability to take a break from their caring role reducing loneliness and social isolation Applicants will need to demonstrate their idea is a fresh approach that is better than existing provision, will benefit the local community and can be expanded and replicated.

The voluntary sector, charities, SMEs and commercial organisations can all bid for funding to prove their concept, with the aim of securing longer term funding from other sources.Carers and other experts will sit on the evaluation panel to make sure proposals are feasible.

The fund was first announced last year as part of the Carers Action Plan, a cross-government programme of targeted work to support unpaid carers over the next 2 years. Initially the fund was worth half a million pounds.

However, funding was later increased to £5 million.

The fund supports the ‘ageing society’ Grand Challenge, part of the government’s Industrial Strategy, to harness the power of innovation to help meet the needs of an ageing society. The NHS is also working to better identify and support carers across England, as part of the NHS Long Term Plan.

Minister for Care, Caroline Dinenage, said: Informal care is a fundamental part of our health and care system, which would not be sustainable without the incredible contribution of carers across the country. But we cannot take them for granted and must do more to protect their wellbeing and ensure they can enjoy full lives.This £5 million investment will help build our understanding of the kinds of support that work for carers, outside of traditional healthcare services. From cafes that bring carers together, to innovative forms of technology that help carers enjoy time off, I want to see a range of exciting projects boosted and their benefits unlocked.

What about pets? -Many women and children are forced to stay with violent partners because they feel they can’t leave their pets behind. Research shows that there is a link between animal abuse and domestic violence: men who are violent to women may threaten to harm or kill a beloved pet in order to intimidate their partner.The Links Group is a multi-agency group that promotes the welfare and safety of vulnerable children, animals and adults. Members include leading associations and charitable organisations. As part of The Links Group, some charities offer pet fostering services specifically for pets belonging to women fleeing from domestic violence.For many women and children who leave violent relationships, the options open to them regarding their pets are very limited.

The services listed below ensure that pets are cared for in a volunteer foster carer’s home until their owner is able to be reunited with them. All placements are strictly confidential.
