We can’t ignore it any longer.

It’s happening right now. There’s only one way we are going. A silent global crisis. Yes, I’m talking about climate change.

Climate change is a topic that is often pushed to the side.

Why? Because the sheer size of the problem is far too difficult for one person to tackle on their own. For change to happen, a global effort needs to occur. Fast.

This is our planet after all and we have a duty to look after it. You’ll see the occasional article emerge about climate change, explaining how certain things are being done by governments across the world or a new agreement has been made. It’s all well and good to have these agreements, but are they actually working?

You’re probably also confused as to whether the planet is getting warmer or cooler as a whole. The simple answer; we don’t know. There are two scenarios and either way, our planet will be affected. But without going into too much geography or science, we can’t just continue as normal. If you don’t believe that climate change is actually happening, then you need to look at the evidence. It is clear. Since the 1970s, temperatures have risen by about one

degree. This doesn’t sound much, but in the scheme of things, this is very significant. Further warming is going to happen over the next few decades yet scientists are unsure whether this is due to natural or man-made causes.

What is the impact on us, directly here in the UK? Well, the amount of global warming will depend on how we react to international agreements on reducing harmful emissions.

We have already hit a point where some elements of climate change are irreversible and if something isn’t done now, we are going to hit a breaking point globally. Key climate threats for the UK include things that you may have noticed that have changed over your lifetime. A classic example; flooding from heavy downpours along with huge stresses on water resources and threats to our biodiversity and natural habitats.

You’ve probably realised that we have had fewer ‘traditional’ white Christmases, with wet winters becoming the norm. There is also the threat of global sea level rise, putting homes in low lying areas at risk. The current government estimates suggest about 333,000 properties are currently under threat of flooding and climate change could increase this to between 630,000 and 1.2 million by 2080. Not only that, but the UK could face threats to its water security and supply; and that is before considering increasing

populations and rising water demand.

This sounds a long time away; but think of the repercussions for our future generations. Our actions have an impact on them. How is that fair? Although none of the predictions are certain and assessing the effects is difficult, there are some things we can do to mitigate the consequences of climate change.

After all, every little helps. Things such as insulating your home, replacing incandescent light bulbs with energy efficient light bulbs will help reduce energy consumption and save you money too. Buying food and other products with reusable or recyclable packaging instead of non-recyclable packaging is another way of reducing our carbon footprint.

But there is still some hope. Science and geology shows us that the Earth has fluctuated between periods of ice ages and warmer interglacial periods and it has been suggested that we are well overdue for another ice age, which would be catastrophic for the northern hemisphere. Perhaps our actions have slowed the onset of the next ice age which gives us time to better understand the impacts of human activity on the climate and possibly maintain some sort of equilibrium, where global temperatures continue at favourable levels. But until we gain that understanding it is, on balance, probably better to assume that current levels of fossil fuel consumption need to be reduced. We can all play a part in this.

Health and Wellbeing Early Cancer Diagnosis Could Save Your Life.

The latest Be Clear On Cancer campaign hopes to raise awareness about certain abdominal symptoms or “tummy troubles” that could be signs of cancer.

Public Health England has launched a regional pilot across the Midlands to make people aware that certain abdominal symptoms such as diarrhoea, bloating and discomfort in the tummy area, which have lasted for three weeks or more, could be a sign of cancer.

The campaign is encouraging people with symptoms to see their doctor and not to ignore the warning signs.

In the East Midlands more than 25,000 people are diagnosed with cancer each year and nearly 12,000 die of the disease.

Around nine out of 10 cases of cancer are diagnosed in people aged 50 and over and the earlier it is diagnosed, the greater the chances of survival.

A recent survey* shows that only one in six (16%) over 50s in the Midlands would see their GP if they felt bloated for more than three weeks and only one in four (24%) would 34

go to the GP if they had experienced discomfort in the tummy area for over three weeks.

Coun Joyce Bosnjak, Chairman of Public Health Nottinghamshire, said: “If you have concerns about bloating or discomfort in the tummy area that have lasted for more than three weeks then you need to see your doctor. Don’t be worried that you might be wasting the GP’s time, finding cancer early saves lives.

“While it may be nothing to worry about, it is always better to get it checked out.”

New cancer diagnoses in Nottinghamshire in 2014** include: Colorectal cancer – 316 men, 251 women Uterus – 159 women Pancreas – 64 men, 75 women Ovary – 92 women These four cancers account for 957 new diagnoses in 2014, 200 more than breast cancer and almost 300 more than prostrate diagnoses.

Cheese Scones makes 6 double to make 12

225g self raising flour Pinch salt Pinch cayenne pepper 1 tsp mustard powder 55g butter 100g strong cheddar cheese 100 - 110 ml milk, plus extra for glazing Extra cheese for topping the scones

Preheat oven with the baking tray inside to 200.C (slightly less for fan ovens). In a medium-large bowl sift together the flour, salt, mustard and baking powder. Sift again to make sure the ingredients are thoroughlymixed.

Chop the butter into cubes, place in the bowl and then mix with your fingertips to make breadcrumbs.

Sprinkle the grated cheese into the breadcrumb mixture and rub in until the cheese is evenly distributed. Try not to mix too much as the heat from your hands may start to melt the cheese. (Run hands under cold water tap for a few seconds before mixing helps.)

Make a well in the centre of the mixture and pour in enough milk to give a fairly soft but firm dough.

Do not pour in all the milk at once as you may not need it all to get the right consistency.

Lightly flour a surface and roll out the dough to approximately 2cm thick.

Cut out the scones with a medium cutter and then place on the hot oven tray. Glaze the tops with the extra milk and sprinkle a little cheese on the top of each scone before putting in the oven.

Bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.

Fermanagh Leads the 2017 Parade - St Patricks Day Festival.

Friday 17th March sees the 18th Festival and Parade for the celebration of St Patrick in Nottingham, the first having been in the Centenary year 2000. As always the main celebration will take place on St. Patrick’s Day itself but there will be events all week. This year we will be twinning with County Fermanagh.

Dragon Boat Challenge at Riverside Festival Entries are now being invited for the ninth Nottingham Riverside Festival Dragon Boat Challenge in aid of Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People.

Bramcote Hills Park Community Cafe CIC are a residents company raising funds to build a community cafe in Bramcote Park through crowd funding They're aiming to raise ÂŁ10,000 by 12th April 2017 Article from their crowdfunding page.

Bramcote Park on the edge of Nottingham is a really popular Green Flag park. It attracts hundreds of visitors every week but has no catering or toilet facilities. The council has agreed to let a residents group build and run a cafe in the park, and we now need to raise the money. This first appeal is for money to fund the architects to design the project.

The cafe will be built to the highest environmental standards, utilising the latest technology to minimise the carbon footprint of the build. It will be run as a community interest company and so all the profits we make will be ploughed back into the community. The community interest company that we have set up already has more than sixty members, all local residents.

We want to make sure that the cafe and toilets are a real community asset. Our kitchen will be designed to enable teaching to take place there, so that people with disabilities or other challenges will be able to receive training and work experience. We hope to have a community room available for meetings or for groups to use, and the toilets will be available to all park users, not just customers. The team bringing the project forward include a number of dog walkers so their needs will also be addressed in the design and running of the building.

DROP IN LEGAL SURGERY FOR DOMESTIC ABUSE FREE DROP IN LEGAL SURGERIES will be on offer for women who live in North Broxtowe and Stapleford, to access free legal information and advice in cases of domestic violence and abuse.

Thanks to a partnership between Broxtowe Women’s Project and Nelsons Solicitors, family law specialist’s sessions will take place every other Wednesday starting on 4th May from 9.30am – 2.30pm.

The sessions will offer: A private, safe space to talk through their concerns A chance to find out more about the legal options available to them An opportunity to obtain free legal advice in an emergency situation, in the time of a crisis Free impartial legal advice on a range of civil matters Many of the women who Broxtowe Women’s Project supports have a number of complex issues. This might mean they find it easier to remain in an abusive relationship. The sessions aim to make legal advice and support more accessible and to encourage them to move forward in their lives.

The project is funded by the Police and Crime Commissioner for Priority Plus areas.

Services for domestic abuse victims gets £20m funding boost 76 projects across the country will get funding to support domestic violence victims including £100k for Nottingham.

Projects across the country are to receive a share of £20m to support victims of domestic abuse, creating more than 2,200 new bed spaces in refuges.

The funding will be shared by 76 projects that have committed to working across local authority boundaries and with other partners to improve domestic violence services.

Communities secretary Sajid Javid said: ‘Domestic abuse is a devastating crime that all too often remains hidden. That’s why we’re determined that no victim will be turned away from the help they need, at the time they need it.

‘This significant investment shows our clear commitment to supporting and strengthening a resilient network of refuge services across the country, with further specialist support to help victims go on to rebuild their lives.’

As well as providing safe accommodation, the funding will also be used to provide further access to education, employment and life skills training.

Grown Ups Choice The Stalker by K.N. Edwards I’m not a big fan of thrillers as I’m easily scared and currently only get to read in the wee hours when feeding the baby – which isn’t the best time to read a scary story… However, I like to try new things and move out of my comfort zone, and I’m glad I managed to read The Stalker. The book is well crafted and the characters build slowly and are very easy to imagine. A student journalist desperate to make it in her chosen profession meets an older man in the pub who offers his contacts and experience as a published journalist – how can she refuse? Despite his creepy appearance and unhealthy interest in her private life, she continues to be swayed by his proffered skills. You can shout at a book all you like, but the characters rarely do what you ask!

This is the first book from Edwards, and naturally there is some polishing that could be done but the story is well paced and believable. The ending is a little sudden and unnerving – be prepared! This is a short story, and the next instalment is under construction.

Children’s Choice Stone Underpants by Rebecca Lisle Caution—this book is hilarious. We were all hysterical about the creative and spectacular ways that Pod tries to keep his bottom warm… of course anything that mentions pants and has a bare bottom picture is always a surefire hit, but this is beautifully illustrated and lovingly crafted with excellent variety and descriptive language.

Lisle is better known for her brilliant books for older children, which are well worth a look at, there are many but maybe start with Brightling?
