Victims of pension fraudsters lost an average £91,000

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and The Pensions Regulator (TPR) are urging the public to be vigilant when receiving unsolicited offers about their pensions and to check who they are dealing with.The FCA and TPR have launched a joint TV advertising campaign to raise awareness of pension scams and the most common tactics used by fraudsters.This comes after figures show that a total of 253 victims reported to Action Fraud that they had lost more than £23 million to pension scammers in 2017, which equates to an average loss of £91,000 per victim. Highly sophisticated scammers lure people into transferring their pensions into fraudulent schemes.

Victims of pension scams can lose their life savings, and be left facing retirement with limited income. The FCA and TPR are calling the public’s attention to the tactics used by pensions scammers. One of the most common tactics is to offer a ‘free pension review’.

Cold calling is currently by far the most common method used to initiate pension fraud. Other scam tactics include: • •

Unexpected contact about your pension via phone, post or email.

Promises of guaranteed high returns and downplaying the risks.

Offering unusual or overseas investments that aren’t regulated by the FCA e.g. overseas hotels, forestry, green energy schemes.

• Putting people under pressure to make a quick decision, for example with time-limited offers, and sending a courier round with paperwork to sign.

• Claiming to be able to unlock money from an individual’s pension (which is normally only possible from age 55).

The regulators recommend four simple steps to protect yourself from pension scams: Reject unexpected pension offers whether made online, on social media or over the phone.

Check who you’re dealing with before changing your pension arrangements – check the FCA Register or call the FCA contact centre on 0800 111 6768 to see if the firm you are dealing with is authorised by the FCA. Don’t be rushed or pressured into making any decision about your pension.

Consider getting impartial information and advice.If you think you’ve been a victim of a pension scam, report it. Visit ScamSmart to find out more.

The joint advertising campaign shows the contrast between the impact on the victims of pension scams and the lifestyles enjoyed at their expense by the criminals.

Using TV, radio and social media adverts, it urges anyone who is contacted about their pension to visit ScamSmart before they transfer any funds, so that they don’t end up becoming the victim of a scammer.

STAPLEFORD REMEMBERS 29TH JULY 2018 was the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War. On this day the Stapleford Community Group with Richard McRae, John McGrath along with volunteers and also volunteers from the Stapleford History Society, Stapleford Combined Services Club,. tied a red poppy onto each lampost, covering Stapleford Town Square, along Derby Road, Church Street, Pasture Road, Ilkeston Road and Hickings Lane, and later, Toton Lane and Nottingham Roach.

Each poppy represents a soldier who fell during WW1. Over 250 have so far been placed as a tribute to these brave people.Silent Soldiers will be installed later in the year outside Sparkle Day Care on Church Street, The Midland Hotel on Derby Road, at The Roach on Toton Lane and outside Cambridge House on Nottingham Road as well as in the Walter Parker VC Memorial Square.

However, just recently after this day, some of the poppies were sadly vandalised and local company Sandicliffe stepped in to help pay for replacements, donating £200 to the Stapleford Community Group Poppy Fund.

The Chilwell Disaster 1st July 1918 The National Shell Filling Factory in Chilwell was the scene of one of Britain’s worst war time disasters.On a hot summer’s day 1st July 1918, there was a devastating explosion in the mixing plant which killed 139 and injured 250, flattening much around the site.The ammunitions factory was the country’s most productive shell filling factory during World War One, supplying more than half the shells fired. It was hastily set up

by Viscount Chetwynd in 1915 when a shortage of shells led to crisis at the front and a crisis in government. He chose a site near Nottingham that was flat with good road and rail links, but also in a dip to shield any explosions. The site had to kept top secret for fear of attacks by the enemy.Ten thousand people worked in the Chilwell munitions factory including many women. They were known as ‘canary girls’ because the chemicals some of them were using turned their skin yellow and their hair green. Most of those who died in the blast were put in a mass grave in Attenborough village church without being named. And it was 50 years before a memorial was put up.

STAPLEFORD REMEMBERS. Stapleford Cemetery in World War 1 by the Stapleford and District History Society- Part 1.

Editors note: A huge thank you to John Shaw for sending this information to Grapevine for our readers. Many of you may be decendants, or family members of these brave men who gave their lives for our country and will find this information useful.

More will be printed over the next couple of months in The Grapevine.

Stapleford cemetery was opened on the 28th July 1881.

The land for the cemetery was generously paid for by Mr Joseph Fearfield who was a member of the Burial Board. The first interment was on the 30th July 1881, and was a Thomas Johnson, a married labourer, aged 68 of Stapleford. The ceremony was performed by Mr Henry Fletcher.

Soldiers who fell in battle were buried near the site of their death with their comrades. This applied not only to the private soldier but also to the son of the Prime Minister. After WWI the majority of families of deceased soldiers would be unable to afford a visit to the various European war cemeteries, and would therefore remember their loved ones on family graves which they could visit more easily. Soldiers buried on home soil were the ones who were wounded and treated in English hospitals and later died of their wounds, or died from related illnesses such as TB. These would have stones if their relatives could afford the cost, or after the war the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) would erect a stone. If the strict criteria of the CWGC were not met then the deceased would remain in an unmarked grave as is the case for at least two discharged wounded soldiers in Stapleford.

Within Stapleford Cemetery there are five CWGC burials from World War One. The headstone for J Hardy was only erected in October 2017. We also know that James Hall, a civilian who lived on Frederick Road in Stapleford, was killed by the Zeppelin L20 raid over Stanton on 31 January 1916, and lies in an unmarked plot. There are two with their own stones and two in unmarked graves. The others are mentioned on family graves, and of course there is the grave of V.C. Walter Parker who died in 1936.

At the outbreak of World War One he joined the Royal Marines, later transferring to the 3rd Bn. Kings Royal Rifles. He went over to France in April 1915 and was soon involved in the 2nd Battle of Ypres. On 25 April the Germans first used gas, and on 25 May Thomas was gassed and lay helpless for 24 hours before being rescued from the Private Tom Tunaley Private Tom Tunaley battle field. The End. It is with great sadness that I have decided to end my time writing for The Grapevine Magazine.

This was the starting point on my media journey and I am forever grateful for the opportunity I had to write about a variety of topics. I began writing for this magazine when I was just 16 years old, and I turn 20 in October! Being able to write freely about anything I wanted to was a great honour and Christine, who is the editor of this magazine, has been amazingly supportive of my work.

I have decided that I should prioritise my Broadcast Journalism degree as I head into my second year of university. I’m also working really hard on my radio and TV work as this is what I want to focus on and pursue for my future career. I haven’t made this decision lightly! I am a little tearful as I write this, it feels like the end of an era!

Busy Lives writes about how she formed her business to help other people in business manage their time, and structure a balance with career and home life. “For my previous working career to date, I have been a leader who has helped transform the lives of the children and communities I have served. So, in the past year, I decided to re-focus my energies on developing my own business, to help transform the lives of my clients. My experience of working within highly pressured environments has given me insight into the stresses and strains of deadlines and juggling work/life balance I have been in a leadership position since 1998, with sixteen years of that as a headteacher in one of the largest primary schools in Nottingham. During that time: I amalgamated two sets of staff; was fundamental in the design of a new build; planned and implemented the logistics of moving premises; and expanded the numbers of staff and children who attended from two to three form entry in each year group. I have a large and varied skill set but my key traits are logistics, problem solving and creative thinking. Tickets Now On Sale For The Broxtowe Lotto.

Tickets are are now on sale for the Broxtowe Lotto, a new local lottery scheme to help support good causes in Broxtowe Borough.

The Mayor and representatives from local good causes at the Broxtowe Lotto launch.

Tickets cost £1 each, with 60p from each ticket going towards local good causes and can be purchased at the Broxtowe Lotto Website https://www.broxtowelotto.co.uk or by calling 0115 727 0402. There are weekly draws with a chance of winning a jackpot of £25,000, as well as prizes of £2,000, £250, £25 or three free tickets.

“The Broxtowe Lotto works by allowing people from across the world to buy tickets to support a good cause of their choice from those registered with the lotto. That cause will get 50p of every £1 ticket sold. A further 10p will go into a general good causes fund which will be allocated by the Council. The remaining 40p goes towards prizes and operating costs,” explained Leader of the Council, Councillor Richard Jackson.

“As pressures on budgets continue to increase, we need to support our local charitable and voluntary groups to become more self-sufficient. The ethos of the Broxtowe Lotto is all about community – the community raising money to invest back in to our Borough. Anyone in the world can play, which will help local causes raise their profile and gain new supporters,” he added.

Over £5,000 Raised For Broxtowe Good Causes In One Week In one week when the Broxtowe Lotto launched and during that time over £5,000 has already been raised for local good causes in Broxtowe Borough.

The first draw will take place on 22nd September.

Vegetarian one-pot potato & mushroom curry Prep: 10 Minutes. Cook: 25 minutes. Easy- Serves 4 Create a quick, tasty, spicy vegetarian dish with mushrooms and curry in less than half an hour.

Ingredients 1 tbsp oil 1 onion roughly chopped 1 large potato chopped into small chunks 1 aubergine trimmed and chopped into chunks 250g button mushrooms 2-4 tbsp curry paste (depending on how hot you like it) 150ml vegetable stock 400ml can reduced-fat coconut milk Chopped coriander, to serve Method Parboil potatoes for approx 5 mins, then heat the oil in a large saucepan, add the onion and potato. Cover, then cook over a low heat for 5 mins until the potatoes start to soften more. Add the aubergine and mushrooms, then cook for a few more mins.

Stir in the curry paste, pour over the stock and coconut milk. Bring to the boil, then simmer for approx 10-15 mins or until the potato is tender. Add cornflour paste if thickening is required. Stir through the coriander and serve with rice or naan bread. *You could use tinned sweetcorn or spinach or any other veg if you can’t get hold of aubergines. Try brown rice for an healthier option.

What does the programme aim to do?

Facilitated by a Course Director – always a retired person – this two and a half day programme aims to examine lifestyle in retirement, looking at (but not dictating) ways in which individuals can help themselves live as full and enjoyable a life as possible. The aim is to encourage looking forward!As soon as you have decided which dates to attend, your name will be placed on the Attendance Register. About 2 weeks before commencement of the course, full Joining Instructions will be sent out.

These will include a programme, directions to the venue, where to park, details of public transport available, maps etc. During the course you will be able to:Examine the changes that leaving paid employment brings Discuss the natural anxieties that may be brought about by these changes Receive advice about taxation, budgeting, investment, benefits and other money matters Discuss the new possibilities created by increased leisure time Look at ways of staying fit and healthy to enable you to enjoy your retirement Tea, coffee and Lunch will be provided as part of the course.

An Information Pack will be issued containing a variety of booklets and leaflets and the Speakers will also bring hand-outs for distribution.

Delegates are asked to complete an Evaluation form during the course.

Speakers will be available during the breaks to answer any personal questions. The Course Director will be in attendance for the whole of the course and will encourage questions and group discussion.This group is a registered charity and

are celebrating their 51st year. The photo above, is taken with the Lord Mayor of Nottingham recently when the volunteers and members attended Beeston Town Hall for their annual meeting.

They help and support people who are approaching retirement to ensure they have planned well in advance to ensure they have a long, happy and rewarding retirement. People are living a good 30 or more years into retirement and their aim is to ensure they enter the third stage of their lives on a positive footing. They hold Pre-Retirement Seminars each month and have expert speakers on Health, Wealth, Consumer rights, State Pensions, Safety/Security, Legal Advice, Income Tax, Voluntary Opportunities, Concessions and how to spend your extra hours of leisure.

They encourage husbands/wives/partners to attend together as retirement affects both parties.

Rewards programs and loyalty programs,do they work?

Do they work?

How can you ensure your program drives behaviour?

Are you just giving away margin?

Three great questions, which we will try and answer in this overview of loyalty programs.

The key to a successful customer loyalty program or rewards program is that it is attractive enough for customers to change their behaviour, but not so great you erode your margins.

It was a recent trip to a McDonalds drive thru in which I redeemed my full coffee loyalty card for a Cappuccino that prompted me to write this. I reflected on why I had kept McDonalds sticky beans and filled my card, yet didn’t bother to collect Texaco petrol stars, despite traveling 30,000 per year by car. I did some investigation around the topic, including a great article from Harvard Business Review in preparation of this.

It probably is worth us putting the word “loyalty” to one side for now. Its not about loyalty (defined: un-abiding trust – being faithful even when it is contrary to your own benefit) it is about an incentive

for customers to behave in a particular way.

What can your loyalty scheme or rewards card do for you?

They can make it harder for a customer to deflect and go to a competitor.

They are about customer retention.

Psychologists have often referred to “Previous Investment” as a strong driver in behaviour.

Gain wallet share. Where a customer may buy products from a range of retailers, a loyalty program can give them an incentive to buy it all from you. For example: Customers locked into Tesco Clubcards, may choose to buy a TV from Tesco instead of Curry’s (where they get no points).

Add-on Sale Tiered reward programs or incentive programs sometimes can encourage customers to buy extra product to reach the next tier. This is common with airlines who operate Silver, Gold and Platinum air mile programs. As you elevate through the tiers, you gain additional benefits. This is clever in that you don’t treat all customers the same – you treat your most “loyal” customers better. This does need managing however, a recent article about Starbucks tier reward program received bad press when a writer was informed that he longer had top tier status, as he wasn’t spending enough, but was not warned in time to address it.

Although customers are unlikely to buy something they don’t need, they may pull

forward a planned purchase for later in the year.

We have noticed that customers increase their frequency of visit as they get closer to a reward status – for instance get 1 free car wash after 6, or a free McDonalds coffee after 6.

Costing your rewards scheme.

This is a challenge at the outset. Over time you will get good data to support your costings, initially you will be forced to make intelligent guesses. Let’s look at the McDonalds Coffee scheme as an example.

Scheme: Buy six coffees get one free.

A simplistic view would be 6x £1.49 (money taken) = rebate of £1.49 (assuming I would have purchased the 7th coffee anyway.

Cost of scheme for me = 25p discount per coffee.

My free coffee comes with a sticky bean, which means I only need to buy 5x coffees to get my free coffee next time = 30p discount per coffee.Other things to consider when costing McDonalds loyalty scheme.

What percentage of reward cards are actually redeemed?

Cost of creating the sticky beans and pull off loyalty card.

What else I buy when ordering my coffee?

The impact on my visit frequency as I get close to filling my loyalty card.

The value annually of changing my habits from coffee shops and service stations for my daily fix of Cappuccino to a McDonalds drive thru.

This shouldn’t put you off, or bamboozle you, but get you to think a rewards scheme through thoroughly before hitting the “go” button.

How easy do you make it for the customer?

There is a limit to how many cards a customer is prepared to carry around with them. My wife’s purse that was bursting at the seams with loyalty cards, has now been thinned out for the top few, Boots, Costa, Tesco and Nectar. I carry Tesco, Costa and Starbucks. My McDonalds card sits in the car arm rest.

Despite that, I am constantly caught out when I visit Costa with only cash in my pocket or a Starbucks that is “not part of the rewards scheme” or pay for petrol and my Tesco card is nowhere to be seen.

What can you do to make the scheme centre on your ‘customer’ not their ‘card’?

Using customer information to drive sales. Tesco know more about the shopping behaviours of its regular club card member shoppers, than any other retailer in the UK. They know when you treat yourself, how much fuel you buy, how susceptible to offers you are, how much you spend on your Christmas food shop and what time of the day or night you do it. Tesco has an enormous department trying to make sense of this data and looking for patterns. At the last count over 4,000,000 different variations in vouchers and offers was sent out to its customers.

Focus on your active users i.e. rewarding the loyal. Perhaps a tiered scheme is the best way to achieve this.

Focus on profitability.

Look to bolster your loyalty scheme with things that do not cost you anything.

For instance some airlines offer meals first to their premier customers. Be careful not to offer something you cannot actually deliver on a daily basis.

In Summary Do loyalty schemes work?, well yes they can. But it isn’t as simple as printing a loyalty card. A business that makes its reward program the centre of its activities, can influence and drive customer behaviour.

The industrious team at Oxjam Beeston HQ are busy cooking up plans for this year’s Oxjam Music Festival. Since 2011 Beeston has built up the volunteer run festival from nothing to a very successful community event of which the town is very proud.

Last year the festival raised a record breaking £22,000, bringing our running total of money raised for Oxfam since we started to a fantastic £85,000, and making Oxjam Beeston probably the most

This is all thanks to the generosity and wonderful community spirit that is Beeston – local residents, organisations and businesses eager to give their time, resources or skills to this worthwhile cause. Over the years hundreds of local artists have performed at Oxjam Beeston, all for free, including chart topping St Raymond, Miss 600, The Voice finalist Lia White, as well as others who have gone on to play at Glastonbury Festival. It’s a fantastic way to celebrate local music, have a great day out and raise money for Oxfam.

Oxjam Ceilidh, Saturday 1st December The Beeston Ceilidh Collective are back at Beeston British Legion for a foot stomping, toe tapping night of jigging, reeling, shimmying and do-si-do-ing.

With the humour and patience of Steve Benford to guide you through the dances, it doesn’t matter if you don’t know what to do; in fact it’s probably even more fun if you don’t! This was a sell out last year so don’t leave it too late to get your tickets!

Classical Oxjam, Sat 17th November In the beautiful setting of Beeston Parish Church this is the fifth time we present an evening of broadly ‘classical’ music to satisfy all kinds of concert goers, from truly ‘classical’ to lighter, more modern pieces. At the time of writing we are still completing our programme but we already know that talented young pianist Matthew Clemmet, who was such a revelation last year, will join us again.

We are also delighted that Il Bel Quattro will be with us again, who were at the heart of the very successful ‘Operatic Arias’ Oxjam concert last year. More acts to be announced in due course.
