Language change isn’t all that bad.

Language changes more than I change my hairstyle. And trust me, that’s very frequently.

The point that I am trying to make is that language isn’t static, it has always evolved and changed. Think back to the language of Shakespeare and then think about some of the language we use today. It’s very different, init?

Take Multicultural London English, which is now usually referred to as Multicultural Urban English. MLE emerged in the late 20th century and was originally spoken by working class youth in London. Influences include strong Jamaican and West African patois and it spread to mainly southern England, where it then began to slowly replace the Cockney accent. The reason it is now often referred to as Multicultural Urban English is because, not only is it being used by the youth of London, but by many people particularly in urban areas across the whole of the UK. There are many negative views surrounding changes to the use of different words in the English language.

There will have been linguists in the past disagreeing with language change and saying that it is wrong. Language change is never wrong and, of course, everyone

is entitled to their own opinion but the process of language change is a natural one. No one criticised Shakespeare or Dickens for coining new words, did they?

MLE is also often referred to as Jafaican (fake Jamaican). Jafaican itself immediately sounds like a mockery and if you thought that, you aren’t wrong.

Jafaican is often perceived as being inauthentic and something that people put on to portray a ‘ghetto authenticity’ in order to ‘sound cool’. MLE has also been accused of making young people sound ‘unintelligent’ with the thought that ‘street slang will exclude people from many work opportunities.’ These comments are unfair, because you shouldn’t make assumptions about someone based entirely on their accent or dialect. Language is used as part of each individual’s identity and you certainly can’t always base language on intelligence; there just isn’t a proven correlation.

Having said that, perhaps a way around it would be to teach young people to code switch, which is changing their dialect according to context. This however, often doesn’t need to be taught because it is something that most people do naturally depending on who they are conversing with. Even though young people need to be reminded of how to use language in specific contexts, they should never have to completely abandon their own accent and dialect because this gives them an identity and something to be proud of, acting as a form of regional solidarity.

I think it’s unfair that not all forms of language are accepted and that critics of MLE are actually condemning its speakers rather than the language itself.

If someone is exposed to a certain type of language, it is likely to become part of their own vocabulary. Language is a way of expressing solidary with your peers.

Who’s to say that Received Pronunciation, which is often referred to as the Queen’s English, doesn’t sound absurd and snooty? I’m not saying that it does, but attitude towards language change is just a subjective opinion.

Whatever young people adopt, the older generations will always pick out flaws and criticise it. It’s just the way it is, init?

Community A message from Cllr.John Mcgrath Hi everyone, Hope you have all enjoyed your summer holidays, thanks to everyone who voted for me and Labour in the County elections, in Stapleford, Bramcote, Trowell and Awsworth. It was close., but the two Conservative Councillors who won were the two Johns, Mr Doddy and Mr Longden. Just so everybody knows the 2 Johns duties are social care in the community, schools and road improvements in our area.

We had a number of meetings over the summer with Councillors and members of the public, neither turned up. John had a family bereavement, but Cllr Doddy and the chairman of Major Developments at the County, Cllr Cottee, did not return our invititation. God forbid I hope they did not have family problems like Cllr Longden. At the meetings, which Richard organised a number of traffic problems were highlighted. A letter has been submitted to Cllr Cottee. We need to move forward on these problems which we have had for many years, we wait for the County's response. My belief is that Stapleford once again has been put on the back burner, I hope I'm wrong.

I am still the Borough Councillor for Stapleford Southwest which is run like the County by the Conservatives. What concerns me and many people in Stapleford is the lack of effort and energy to get Stapleford on the map again. While I support the investment into Beeston square and the work being put in, I cannot for the life of me understand why the gateway to Stapleford is turning into a wildlife park. By the way, I mean the Aldi site. Perhaps the planning committee instead of putting in the condition of the 10 house plan should have listened to the 1100 people who signed the petition for the Aldi store. The decision to reduce the No 18 bus timetable was something that really got under my skin. A life line to many of our pensioners from the north of Stapleford where they could meet their friends and do their shopping in the town. Once again there was no consultation, but apparently Barton's, who have a stake in the tram, said it was not financially viable, and blamed the tram, haha.

Anyway, no more politics.

Stapleford Town Fc seem to be going from strength to strength, thanks to a fantastic committee run by Pete, Jason and Andy. Especially not forgetting the parents and all the children. Thanks to Broxtowe Borough Council who have made Hickings lane their new home, for all their football coaching and community activities. I hope that this will be a stepping stone for major investment, a 4G and community hub to try and get Stapleford to where it should be because these people deserve it. Well done to the Town Council again for all the effort it is putting in for the Remembrance Day parade. Finally, any bands or entertainers who would like to perform at the Christmas Lights switch on in Stapleford contact Alex Khan at Broxtowe Borough Council or Richard at the Stapleford Community Group to put your name forward to make it a great event for the town of Stapleford.

So come Chubb, Sharon, Trev and all you other karaoke singers have a bash.

The Singing Company (Junior Choir) of the Salvation Army at Stapleford are holding a reunion weekend on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th October this year.

The Salvation Army began in Stapleford in the year 1886 and the choir has been operational since shortly after that time to the present day performing concerts and taking part in the services.

Two Guide Leaders head for challenges overseas Two members of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire are taking part in projects overseas this Autumn, though Beeston’s Katie Farrell and Eastwood’s Franki Cripps will be experiencing very different challenges.

Katie Farrell (30), a Guider in Beeston, leaves for China on 23 September to spend ten days walking the Great Wall of China to raise funds for Girlguiding. She will be part of a party of 30 Girlguiding members and supporters from across the UK and has to raise £2950 before she goes. She’s nearly reached her target, having been busy over the last few months with activities ranging from a Eurovision sweepstake and a games/ coffee morning to wearing a panda costume when she passed the £1,000 milestone!

‘I decided to give something back to Girlguiding, as the charity changed my life,’ says Katie, explaining why she decided to embark on the trip. ‘Guiding has given me - and many other people - opportunities in life which we would not have had otherwise and it gives girls a great experience, regardless of their background or abilities, as well as letting

them have fun!’

By the time Katie leaves, Franki Cripps (26), Assistant Leader with 1st Eastwood Rainbows, will already have spent several weeks in Mexico on a GOLD project (Guiding Overseas Linked with Development). Part of a team supporting peer education and developing girls' leadership skills, Franki will also be helping to recruit, retain and train local Guide Leaders. Her team originally intended to work in Peru but were re-assigned to Mexico at the beginning of August following floods in Peru - a move which added to the challenge! Their blog can be followed at www.goldmexico. wordpress.com ‘Guiding is very special to me!’ says Franki, who has been appointed First Aider for the team. ‘I am so excited to share my own experiences, learn from others' and broaden my knowledge of international guiding.’

The first challenge for Franki was to raise £1850 towards the cost of the trip. Her fundraising has included a bake sale, a quiz night and a coffee morning and she’s also been ‘selling’ dates in her diary, with a cash prize for the one drawn out at the completion of her campaign.

Eye standards for driving Minimum eyesight standards – all drivers The law requires that all licensed drivers to meet the following eyesight requirements (including drivers aided by prescribed glasses or contact lenses): In good daylight, able to read the registration mark fixed to a vehicle registered under current standards at a distance of 20 metres on a car registered since 1 September 2001, or at a distance of 20.5 metres with letters and numbers 79 mm high by 57 mm wide on a car registered before 1 September 2001, and when you are at your Opticians this means the visual acuity must be at least Snellen 6/12 with both eyes open or in the only eye if monocular .The 6/12 line is usually the 4th or 5th line from the bottom of the chart.

Any driver unable to meet these standards must not drive and must notify the DVLA, which will refuse or revoke a licence.

The law also requires all drivers to have a minimum field of vision,higher standard of visual acuity and field of vision is required for Group 2 bus and lorry drivers

binocular drivers and may drive only after clinical advice of successful adaptation to the condition.

Only those monocular people who fail to meet these requirements are required to notify the DVLA, whereas for bus and lorry driver, the visual standards required are higher and they must notify the DVLA. Wollaton Singers, a well established local female choir, is looking for new members for the new term starting on Tuesday 5th September. We meet every Tuesday in term time, 7.30 pm to 9.30pm, in the back room of the Methodist Church on Wollaton Road Beeston (next to the Commercial pub). It's a really friendly group and we have a lot of fun as well as working hard to reach a high standard for performances. Housing’s Garden Competition Three prize presentations were held last week after green fingered tenants took part in a garden competition run by Housing and United Living.

Housing invited tenants and leaseholders to enter a Garden Competition, which was featured in the Spring edition of the Tenant and Leaseholder Matters. They were asked to enter photos of their own garden or outdoor space, or were nominated by a neighbour or relative who they felt deserved recognition for their efforts.

The three categories were Best Individual Garden, Best Small Container Display Best Communal Garden. Residents who are involved in involvement groups were asked to help judge the entries, and travelled out with a Housing Officer to look at the individual gardens and spaces.

The following winners were chosen: Best Individual Garden – Mrs Elliot, Ewe Lamb Close Best Small Container Display – Mrs Ward, Regency Court Best Communal Garden – Grove Court, Retirement Living scheme There were two prizes for each category of National Garden Centre Vouchers and a gardening hamper, and each winner was presented with a personalised certificate. United Living sponsored the competition, and Chris Harrison from United Living attended along with the residents to present the prizes.

Richard Baker, Regional Director of United Living said: "United Living are happy to support the local community of Broxtowe; good things happen when we all pull together. The tenants and leaseholders have worked hard on their gardens and should be very proud of what has been achieved".

Approximately 75 tonnes of additional play bark will be added to the Council’s 34 play areas to ensure that children have a cushioned surface if they fall around the play area.

“Safety is a priority at these much loved play areas and the additional bark will help ensure that our young residents can enjoy some fresh air and play time and parents can be reassured,” said Councillor Martin Plackett, Vice Chair of the Leisure and Environment Committee, who went along to help the Parks Team install the bark at Queen Elizabeth Park in Stapleford and Mansfield Road Recreation Ground in Eastwood.

Play bark is a natural woodland product and is sourced sustainably. The top up is part of the annual play area maintenance programme.

Care and support at home: Choosing a Care Provider 1.

Care at home can provide the help and support necessary for people to remain independent and stay in their own home for as long as possible. Although care at home has traditionally been delivered by Local Authorities or companies appointed

by Local authorities, there is now a much wider choice of providers for both private and social care funding. If you qualify for social care funding (see my previous articles on care needs and funding) there is now a duty for councils to produce a care and support plan and offer a Personal Budget. A Personal Budget is an agreed amount of money which is allocated to you personally by your local council (and other funding sources) following and assessment of your care and support needs. This is support that you decide and control. In other words you control the money for your care and support. The amount of money which has been agreed as you Personal Budget can be received as Direct Payments where the local authority pays part or your entire personal budget into a designated bank account.

You then utlise this direct payment to pay for the support you choose to have.

Regardless of funding the approach to evaluating and choosing a provider can be daunting. In many instances we have the added pressure of having to make a decision quickly to accommodate a need brought about by illness or sudden deterioration in someoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s condition.

The guidelines below will help you ask the right questions and evaluate any prospective provider(s) to ensure that your decision is made on the basis of sound analysis. The better companies will

freely provide this information but be prepared to ask.

You should ask whether the company is registered with the Care & Quality Commission (CQC) and request details of their latest inspection. The CQC is the body responsible for regulating care in England and carries out regular inspections to rate the services based on how well they meet minimum standards.

You can also find out more about the provider (or ask somebody to do it on your behalf) via the internet at www.cqc. org.uk by entering the providerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s details or post code.

It is also important to find out whether the provider recruits and employs their staff as opposed to utilising a third party agency that supplies staff. Ask about the type of training they provide before carers are allowed to visit clients. As a minimum it should include First aid, Moving & Handling, Infection Control, Safeguarding, Health & Safety and Food Hygiene. In addition you should confirm that a Criminal Records Check is carried out before staff are employed and find out how many references (if any) they request from previous employers.

An understanding of how they assign carers to specific clients is vitally important. Once you agree the number and length of visits find out how many carers they will use and how they decide on the relevant carer(s). A good provider will aim to minimise the number of carers involved and will also carefully look at the compatibility between the carer and the person receiving the care.

Pulled Pork with Smoky Sauce Serves 4 - Cooking time about 4 hours 1.5kg boneless pork shoulder (fat removed) 1tbsp dried chilli flakes 1tbsp mustard powder 2 tbsps white wine vinegar 250ml chicken stock 3 onions thinly sliced 2 tbps garlic puree Preheat oven 160%c Mix the first 2 ingredients & salt & black pepper & rub into the pork Whisk together stock & vinegar & garlic Spread over onions Cover with a sheet of baking paper & tin foil - roast for 2 and half mins Remove the foil & paper cook for another 45 mins Take out of oven & rest for as long as you can resist !

Put all sauce ingredients into the same pan Stir & bring to the boil Turn down the heat & simmer gently (watching all the time - don't allow to burn !)

Might take 20 mins - once thickened take off the heat & cool Pull the rested pork apart - basically put a fork in the joint and think of someone that has annoyed you !

Serve straight away with the sauce on Brioche / sweet potatoes / rice with salad & coleslaw.

You could also add with barbeque food, i.e: ribs, baked beans, beetroot etc See picture below:

Broxtowe Parks Retain Their Longstanding Green Flag Awards Bramcote Hills Park and Colliers Woods have retained their prestigious Green Flag Awards for their high environmental standards and well maintained facilities.

Walking with the Long Eaton Rambling Club By John Aram Walking has been described by experts as the perfect form of physical activity.

So why not get out in the countryside and witness Britain’s beautiful scenery on foot?

Walking is fast becoming Britain’s no one pastime; a good walk in the countryside is good for your health and wellbeing, keeping you fit by burning off all those unwanted calories and comes at very little to no cost at all.

The Long Eaton rambling club are out in the countryside every weekend, some Thursdays and evenings during the lighter nights. So why not come and join us on a ramble this weekend, a full programme of walks are listed on our web-site.

The rambling club always meet in Long Eaton to car share, so to keep transport costs to a minimum unlike other clubs that generally meet at the start of walks.

Slightly longer walks are taken each Sunday with shorter walks on Thursdays; the walks are taken at a relatively easy pace and usually with a pub stop to rejuvenate the parts that need rejuvenating. You don’t have to be a seasoned hiker to enjoy a walk with the Long Eaton rambling club; the aim is to make the walks fun, friendly and above all enjoyable.

Grown Ups Choice Condition: The Final Correction by Alec Birri I was nervous to start reading this, one because it’s the third book in a trilogy and I haven’t read the first two – and secondly because I read the introduction and was already a bit scared…

However, good writing is good writing whatever the subject matter and despite this dystopian tale which is disturbing and complex, it’s completely unputdownable because of the quality of Birri’s prose. I do feel that reading the first two stories would have been an advantage in the back story and character development, and I plan to go back and read them once The Final Correction is less sharp in my mind.

I am always drawn to military writers and themes as I have a strong connection to the military – Birri served in the British Army for 30 years and his writing has a cathartic element that seeps through the story. The book raised a number of moral and ethical questions that were deeply provoking and sparked a number of challenging conversations with myself and in groups. For this reason alone it would make a brilliant book club choice. I can’t use the word ‘enjoy’ as the book (for me) was too dark for that, but I’m very glad I’ve read it and was unable to think of much else while navigating the relationship between the main characters – both of whom are flawed and cracked and brilliantly portrayed, although opposites in every way. The story is convoluted and unpredictable which makes it all the more attractive and unusual. In a world of repeats and covers, it was refreshing to read something new and unexpected.

Children’s Choice Astronaut Lamby by Jude Lennon, Illustrated by Holly Bushnell We really love Lamby here, and are very lucky to have bought the toy set to go with it! The story is very rhythmic and funny and the crazy alien is exactly as our children would create one – all eyes and lots of legs.

The colours and illustrations are captivating, and from a more practical point of view the font is very readable (I have struggled on occasion when some books get a bit too ‘arty’).

We now know the story so well that our 3 year old can ‘read’ it on her own – and her older siblings can really read it as well, so they can entertain each other which is perfect. What is Oxjam?

Oxjam is a major fundraiser for Oxfam and also the UK’s largest music festival.

Taking place in towns and cities across the UK, volunteers celebrate music in their local communities by organising their own events in aid of Oxfam. Equally important to Oxjam Beeston is the generosity of residents, organisations and businesses in the local community eager to give their time, resources or skills to this worthwhile cause.

Beeston will be alive with bands, vocalists, choirs, and singer-songwriters, bringing you an eclectic mix of music - from indie to Americana, folk to DJ, acoustic to rock, and more.

Operatic Oxjam, Saturday 14th October, 7pm Beeston Parish Church The programme will include pieces by Mozart, Bizet, Verdi and Mendelssohn, performed by the Il Bel Quattro vocal quartet with the Beeston Oxjam Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Derek Williams and lead by Richard Laing.

Classical Oxjam, Saturday 11th November, 6.30pm Beeston Parish Church. With a loose interpretation of the term “classical”, previous Classical Oxjam evenings have featured Led Zeppelin pieces arranged for strings and harp, a Beach Boys song, as well as music by Bach, Mozart and so on. Each year we aim to bring you something different - last year it was Indian classical on sarod and tabla. This year we hope to feature an innovative ensemble performing a mixture of jazz and world music, as well as piano, strings and mixed ensembles playing a varied programme of music to appeal to all.

Oxjam Ceilidh, Friday 24th November, 7.30pm Royal British Legion Once again Beeston will be jigging, reeling, shimmying and do-si-do-ing the night away to the foot stamping, toe tapping music of the Beeston Ceilidh Collective. This is a popular event for all ages, and with the humour and patience of Steve Benford to guide you through the dances, it doesn’t matter if you don’t know what to do; in fact it’s probably even more fun if you don’t!

£1000 RAISED FOR WOMEN’S CHARITY A GREAT BRITISH summer garden party has helped raised £1,000 for Wellbeing of Women, a charity which funds research into women’s reproductive health and childbirth.

The Mayor of Broxtowe, Councillor Halimah Khaled MBE is supporting Wellbeing of Women as her chosen charity this year and joined friend and fellow Councillor, Dr. John Doddy at his home for the garden party, where guests enjoyed a three course curry lunch, entertainment and a raffle.

Wellbeing of Women is very close to Halimah’s heart after she starting fundraising for them in the 1990s before founding a Nottingham branch, where she is still Chair.

Halimah has an ambitious fundraising target this year and other events are planned including ‘Nottingham’s Got Talent’ talent show on 10th September at the Village Hotel, a Golf Day at Chilwell Manor Golf Club on 17th September, a cake sale as part of the Heritage Open Days and the annual Charity Ball on 24th March 2018.
