Pre -Retirement Courses in Beeston The photograph shown here are people who are approaching retirement and have attended a Pre-Retirement Course held at Beeston Town Hall last month.

This course covers everything you need to know in relation to retirement and all the delegates have enjoyed the help and support from the Nottingham & District Pre-Retirement group (a local charity who are celebrating 47 years in existence).

The only problem is that not many people are aware that there is a group right on their doorstep who ensure anyone within 3 years of retirement are notified of the many important changes in legislation which will affect State Retirement Pension dates. This will be particularly pertinent in relation to the Flat Rate State Pension which will start in April 2016. The course also covers the recent budget proposals in relation to annuities and other hot topics.

This course was an eye opener to all the delegates and many said they had not realised how much information was provided, such as “if I live in my villa in Spain, will I still receive my Government pension?”

“If I have a part time job will I pay tax and, if so how much?” or “how much will my investments be affected?”

“Can I still obtain credit when I retire?”

“If I have to go into residential care, will I have to sell my property to pay the fees?”

The Nottingham Pre-Retirement is holding courses each month at Beeston Town Hall and full details are on the website www.ndprc.org.uk or you can contact Phil Whitt on 0115 922 3824 to register for the next session.

Each delegate will be able to have a 1:1 with the speakers and course material, hand-outs and a 3 course buffet lunch will be provided.

TRAM TREAT A SWEET SUCCESS It’s great news that the tram extension has come to Beeston but for cyclists it brings a few things to consider as new road layouts and tram infrastructure open up. Safer cycling around tram tracks is crucial if accidents are to be avoided. To help prepare, TravelRight Broxtowe held training sessions on cycling around tracks, which covered everything from how to cross over the tracks safely to tips on good road positioning.

The sessions were a part of Nottingham’s European Mobility Week programme that took place throughout Broxtowe Borough and the Nottingham urban area.

At sessions held on 18th and 20th September, riders were treated to a free cake and coffee from Belle & Jerome and The Flying Goose, courtesy of sponsorship from NET. The Mayor of Broxtowe Borough, Councillor Stan Heptinstall attended a session to show his support and encourage more local people to take advantage of training on offer. After chatting to participants, the Mayor got on a bike to join in the fun.

“I think the training was an excellent opportunity for everyone to find out about the few simple rules we all need to follow. It is important to know how to be safe on a bicycle whilst still being able to have fun” said the Executive Director of TravelRight, Gary Smerdon-White.

“I am pleased that TravelRight was able to offer this training to the people of Broxtowe Borough and that we helped with community safety in some way.”

Twenty two people attended the sessions which were held in the evening and at the weekend, to be accessible for the working population who use their bike to commute.

Special Fair 4 Special Children Children love the fun and excitement that a Fairground brings, however, not all of them get the chance to experience that fun and excitement.

For physically challenged and special needs children the amount of enjoyment they receive from a day at the fair is just the same as for other children but the opportunities to experience that enjoyment are very limited. However, thanks to the generosity of Freemasons in Nottingham and Showmen who are members of the Showman’s Lodge in Loughborough about 250 such children were able to enjoy all the fun of the fair, at least for half a day, on Wednesday 20th August 2014, at Bramcote Hills Park. Michael McKean who runs McKean’s Fairground and is also a member of the Showman’s Lodge said: “For several years now we have been very pleased to offer our time and use of the fairground. Just the looks on the little kid’s faces makes it all worthwhile.”

The rides are set up to run at much slower speeds than normal and some of the dancing lights are toned down. The children also get to enjoy the usual hot dogs, beef burgers, candy floss and ice cream.

The two Nottinghamshire Lodges involved, Edwalton and St Giles, fundraise throughout the year to cover the cost of running the event and then give generously of their time on the day to make sure it is a safe and enjoyable event for all. The Masonic Charity ‘Teddies for Loving Care [TLC] Nottinghamshire’ also supports the day by ensuring that each special needs child leaves clutching their very own teddy.

Parents and children alike all said how much they had enjoyed the day and were already looking forward to next year.

Beeston Inner Wheel Club

Afternoon tea was held at President Sheila Chambers home to mark the beginning of her year of office in July when the presidential chain was handed over.

After a quiet time, suddenly a call went out from ourSecretary for a working party to remove badges from 21 blazers which had been donated to us. It was a condition that this should be done before we could then send them for overseas charities. This proved quite a task but as good Inner Wheel members we found a solution and the job was completed!

Recently a very successful and enjoyable coffee morning was held at the President’s home which raised a considerable sum for the Notts. & Lincs. Air Ambulance and a Nottingham children’s cancer trust. We have also responded to the appeal by knitting poppies for the Royal British Legion which were presented at the Nottingham Council House. They will be sold for £2 each and the money will go to the Royal British Legion Poppy appeal.

It is hoped to get a poppy for every life lost in Nottinghamshire in the First World War.

   

1 1/4 cups sugar 2 1/4 cups gluten-free all purpose flour mix (if your mix contains xanthan gum or guar gum don’t add the additional 1 teaspoon gum to the recipe) 1 teaspoon guar gum OR xanthan gum 1 tablespoon cinnamon 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 cups grated carrots (about 4 large carrots) 1 large peeled and shredded apple 8 ounces drained, crushed pineapple 3/4 cups raisins 1/2 cup shredded, sweetened coconut 1/2 cup coarsely chopped walnuts or pecans 3 large eggs 1 cup light olive oil OR canola oil 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Prep Time: 30 minutes Cook Time: 25 minutes Total Time: 55 minutes Preparation: Preheat oven to 350° F / 176° C Grease standard muffin pan or line with paper muffin cup liners.

In a large mixing bowl combine sugar, gluten-free flour blend, guar gum OR xanthan gum, cinnamon, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Use a large whisk to thoroughly combine.

In a separate large bowl combine shredded carrots, apples, crushed pineapple, raisins, coconut and nuts.

Stir to thoroughly mix.

Add the fruit, vegetable, nut mixture to the dry ingredients followed by eggs, oil and vanilla. Beat the mixture to thoroughly combine ingredients.

Fill muffin cups about 3/4 full. Bake in preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean.

Book Review by Clare Lyons Danny Wallace and the Centre of the Universe by Danny Wallace This is part of the Quick Reads series, for those who only want a short book, or may be just starting to get back into reading or improve their literacy – it’s a great selection of authors that have produced some brilliant (short) books. Wallace is one of my absolute favourite authors, great non-fiction that is funny and very easy to read; in the longer format I would heartily recommend Friends Like These, especially if you’re middle aged – but I was thrilled to find he had also written a Quick Read. In the usual, slightly strange, way his books come about, Wallace was surprised to find that the centre of the universe was in fact in a town called Wallace in America – so he had no choice but to investigate…it’s a light and fun exploration of a very enigmatic town, and a great short story.

The pages are written on odd angles and it isn’t easy to follow at times, but it’s worth the effort as the rhythm and rhyme flow beautifully and the story is really lovely. The illustrations are entertaining and there is lots of extra detail in them to look at, the task that Sid has to perform is most important, and only the reader will know who saved the day. There were cheers all around when we came to the end.

Broxtowe campaign groups have stepped up the fight to save precious greenbelt land from development by launching a united ‘Save Broxtowe’s Greenbelt’ campaign.

This follows on from the recent decision by Ms Jill Kingaby, the government inspector, to approve controversial plans to build housing on formerly protected greenbelt land in the borough. The inspector recently approved the plan of Nottingham, Gedling and Broxtowe councils to build over 30,000 new dwellings throughout Nottinghamshire, thousands of which are to be sited on greenbelt land. The councils have claimed that these houses are necessary to fill the perceived housing gap. However, the plans have been controversial from the outset, with those in opposition arguing that the numbers should be revised down due to environmental constraints and that the numbers are based on unrealistic economic prospects. In any case, tepsbrownfield sites (of which there are still a great deal throughout the three boroughs), should be prioritised, before building on valuable and protected greenbelt land .

Local campaign groups STRAG (Stapleford and Trowell Action Group), South Broxtowe 20/20, Stapleford Community Group, TEPS (Toton Environmental Protection Society) and the Friends of Toton Fields have been campaigning to save greenbelt sites at Toton Lane (Toton and Stapleford) and Field Farm (Stapleford and Trowell) from development.

They have vowed to stand united to continue the fight to protect the greenbelt in Broxtowe as a whole and, to actively bring forward brownfield sites as a preference.

A spokesperson for the group Richard McRae said, “Residents were told years ago that these developments were “done deals”, but they still are not. We are united in our commitment to do everything we can to urge the councils to prioritise brownfield sites and protect our greenbelt land, as is indeed required by government policy.”

It is understood that Nottingham City Council have already voted to adopt the ACS this week, without giving further consideration to first bringing forward brownfield sites. Broxtowe Borough Council plans to have its final vote on the Aligned Core Strategies (ACS) on the 17th of September. Campaigners are concerned that, the agenda released yesterday by the Broxtowe Borough Council appears to suggest the vote will take place without giving further consideration to prioritising brownfield capacity. This, despite the fact that the council has recently recruited new staff purportedly with the express purpose of bringing forward brownfield sites for development. The groups are calling for the council to undertake a proper review of all the greenbelt in the borough and to delay adopting the ACS until such a time as brownfield capacity can be prioritised.

They point to sites, such as the Boots site in Beeston, which is under consideration for development, but the numbers of which have not been included in the ACS.

More importantly, a group of Parish Councils in and around the area, have also warned the Councils that they will engage in legal action should the ACS be adopted. ‘Save Broxtowe’s Greenbelt’ is supporting this challenge. The ‘Save Broxtowe’s Greenbelt’ campaign also has the support of MP Anna Soubry and local Green Party representatives including David Kirwan and Katharina Boettge. They are urging other local groups and the public to get involved. The group plans to stage a demonstration at the full Council meeting to be held on the 17th of September at the New Council Chamber, Town Hall, Beeston at 7pm. Local residents from all over Broxtowe are invited to show their opposition to the plans by attending the protest. For both our talks and exhibition, we decided to focus on stories with a local connection, concentrating on the East Midlands, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, and more specifically Bromley House Library and its members.

The exhibition has been made possible by the generosity and enthusiasm of the library’s members, who have offered to loan their precious photographs and mementoes, and to tell the ‘stories’ behind their families’ experience of the Great War. It will be displayed in the Bromley House Gallery and in the main reading rooms, and will include two and three dimensional objects and artefacts, displayed alongside photographic images of those involved in the war – many of whom lost their lives.

The exhibition will be open to the public every Wednesday from 10th September, 10.30am – 4pm We have a diverse programme of subjects and speakers for our Saturday lectures (£5.00 pp) and Wednesday lunchtime talks, which we are also opening up to the public. The talks on Wednesdays are free but tickets need to be reserved in advance. Swan Canaries by The Arletty Theatre in Beeston - November July 1st 2014, was the 96th anniversary of the biggest explosion and the largest loss of civilian life this country has ever known, yet many people know nothing about it. That’s because it was essential to keep it quiet at the time, so as not to draw attention to the location of National Shell-Filling Factory No 6, Chilwell.

At around 7.10pm, eight tonnes of TNT detonated, killing 139 workers, and wounding over 250 more. The bravery of those who went straight back to help, or stayed, despite their injuries, to tend the casualties, was deemed worthy of the Victoria Cross, but sadly, it was never awarded. The survivors went back to work three days later, to ensure the supply of ammunition to the Front.

2014 marks a century since the beginning of The Great War. Arletty Theatre, a troupe funded by the Arts Council England, decided to bring some of our local war heroes to life on the stage.

Chilwell Canaries was the name for a group of amazing women who, in the First World War, filled bombs in a factory in Chilwell.

The Canary Girls were so named due to working with explosives, which stained their skin yellow.

Up to 19 million bombs were filled in the factory up until the 1 July 1918, when the factory exploded, killing many of the workers.

Swan Canaries tells the story about four women working at the factory in the lead up to the explosion, Rose, Mary, Polly and Violet. Polly is a young girl working in the factory whose fiance has been called to the front line. She is shown the ropes by his mother, Rose, who bears a secret about the boy.

The set is unusually bare and the actors rely on movement and song to bring the story to life, which gives the performance a homespun and engaging feel, reminiscent of the ‘make do’ attitude of the war.

The play holds a community vibe and in the interval the audience with their song sheets can join in with sing-a-long of old war songs, including It’s A Long Way To Tipperary and Pack All Your Troubles (In Your Old Kit Bag).

A very moving, harrowing, emotional and sometimes funny story is told. Swan Canaries masterfully examines the camaraderie between women from a small village working together for the good of the country.
