Local teen Emma Snow writes about various topics and events each month in the Grapevine. “A voice for the young people in our Community”. 18 things I’ve learnt in 18 years Birthday Edition As I will be turning 18 this month, I thought it would be fitting to take a different approach and write about 18 things I have learnt in 18 years. On reflection, I realised that there are many aspects in life that we take for granted. So here goes… 1. Family is very important. Not all friendships last forever, but blood relations do. In close families, they will always be there to support you unconditionally. Don’t take family for granted. 2. Appreciate your friends. I love the saying ‘friends are like stars, you might not always see them, but you know they’re always there’. So cliché, but so true. Know who your true friends are and stick by them. They will be your forever friends. 3. No one is ugly. As I look around, no one stands out as being ugly. Everyone is unique and everyone has their own quirks. I 18

think some people are quick to judge people on their appearance before they get to know them. Beauty shines from within. 4.…But some people have an ugly heart. Avoid these people. If you suspect that someone has bad intentions and this is proven to be true, don’t waste your time on them and don’t feel guilty letting them go. You need positive and kind people in your life. 5. Appreciate the little things in life. The ‘hello!’ from your neighbour in the morning, the colour of the sky when the sun sets, the sound of the people you love laughing. Appreciate these things. 6. Cheese goes with everything! You can put cheese on crackers, beans on toast, pasta, you name it. Cheese will go with it! 7. Hard work is the key to success. Those who think success is handed to people on a plate are wrong. People work to get where they are. Creating opportunities takes time and dedication and many people wouldn’t be where they are today without hard work. 8. My level of success compared to the next person’s is irrelevant. ‘Don’t compare your chapter one to

their chapter 10’. Everyone is at a different chapter of their lives and so your success level will always be different to the next persons. 9. Grab every opportunity with both hands Take every opportunity that presents itself. You never know what may come of it. It might work out, it might not. There’s no harm in trying. 10. Actions speak louder than words Don’t always trust what people may tell you. Someone can tell you that they care, but don’t believe it until they show it. Then you will know if they really meant it. 11. You can’t please everyone Not everyone likes pizza and not everyone likes chocolate. If these can’t please everyone, then neither can you. Appreciate the people who love you for who you are. 12. Don’t be afraid to question things. If something doesn’t seem right to you, question it. If you feel you have been mistreated, question it. If someone doesn’t seem themselves, question them. This takes me onto my next point… 13. Listen. Always Listening is so important. Don’t be someone who doesn’t consider others. If a friend wants to confide in you, listen to them. Listening is a valuable skill many of us take for granted. Sometimes, having someone listen to you is all you need to feel better. 14. Don’t feel pressured to grow up. Keep hold of your inner child for as long as possible. Society tells us to grow up and be responsible. Yes, do this. But

take that inner childish spark to the end of your life. Sometimes the best memories are made when your inner child emerges. 15. Never say never I go by this saying an awful lot. Don’t doubt anything; you never know what is around the next corner. 16. Take time to be proud of yourself In today’s society, we achieve so much, but spend so little time recognising what we do. We are always moving on to the next big project, taking the next leap. Take a moment to think back to this time last year and think of everything you have achieved. Be proud. 17. Your happiness is key Often, we go around trying to make everyone else happy and forget about our own personal happiness. Help people out, but don’t let it take over your life. Your health and wellbeing is the most important. 18. Learning never ends. The list of things I have learnt so far is much longer than 18 points, but I selected the ones which I thought were the most important to me. Every day we are learning. IN THE COMMUNITY Update on Stapleford Post Office move The Public Consultation to move the Stapleford Post Office was discussed at Broxtowe Borough Council recently. The Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council, Councillor Richard Jackson said:” Just as Beeston post office move into W.H.Smith was completed we were informed that the post office now plans to move the Stapleford branch into " Bargain Booze" shop. I have serious concerns about the suitability of the shop so we will consider a Council response in consultation with local members”. There are also concerns from Stapleford Councillors too. Stapleford Councillor Richard MacRae said that: he was pleased the post office could be moving to a more central location, offering good parking and opening seven days a week, but described the choice of venue as “questionable”He is also urging people to join in the consultation, which runs until November 29. MEET BROXTOWE’S NEW SOCIAL LETTINGS OFFICER A NEW Social Lettings Officer has been appointed by Broxtowe Borough Council to head up an initiative to work in partnership with landlords from the Private Rented Sector and she needs your help to find properties in the Borough. Jyoti Jadav has been settling in her to her new role and is keen to hear from landlords who have properties available in Awsworth, Beeston, Bramcote, Brinsley, Cossall, Eastwood, Kimberley, Nuthall, Stapleford and Watnall. Jyoti’s appointment is the Council’s first step towards developing a Social Lettings Agency which will help meet the demand for good quality rented accommodation in the Borough by developing good working relationships with private landlords in the area. “I’m excited to be working with local landlords to increase the options available to people in housing need. I hope to be working with responsible landlords in the Borough who share our aspiration for stable, affordable tenancies in quality properties” said Jyoti. Worlds Apart by Azi Ahmed This is an interesting memoir of a Muslim woman and her early to mid-life. It is a useful and well written reflection on life in Britain during the 90’s for a Muslim girl growing up in a traditional family, but with very unconventional views of the world. What’s particularly unusual is that Ahmed decides to join the training for the Territorial SAS (albeit unexpectedly) Her experiences are very raw and painful, she is the most tenacious and naïve person which makes for a fascinating read. Her life after the SAS training is also unusual as she looks to become an MP—a story that is yet to be concluded. The book is well paced and Ahmed is a likeable character, but it’s lacking in depth and I would have liked to learn more about her fathers' early life, her sister and her mother. Although her SAS experience is extraordinary, for me it didn’t completely make sense, but I don’t want to give away any spoilers! It’s Well worth a read.

Children’s Choice Not Enough for Queen Fluff by Rachel Lyon It’s another Rachel Lyon book, but we love her! This is an important tale about humility and grace, things that children often struggle with , and which are hard to explain. Queen Fluff is very demanding and rude. Her expectations are high and her visit to meet the other bunnies in the Kingdom reminds her that there are more important things in life than money and palaces. The illustrations by Catalina Echeverri are wonderful, and the rhyming text rolls of the tongue. Lots of fun all round.

VICTORY FOR 9 YEAR OLD CHILWELL OLYMPIA BADMINTON PLAYER A 9 year old Badminton Player who plays at Chilwell Olympia Badminton club is celebrating success after a double win at the Under 11â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s English National Badminton Championships. Lucy Brierley, from Wollaton, won not only the singles title at this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s competition on 11th September, but also the doubles with partner Carly Stevenson, aged 10, from Leicester. She entered the competition seeded number 1 in singles and had to win all 3 matches in her group to proceed to the final. Her dad, Andy and sister, Megan, were court side providing the coaching during the matches while mum, Alison, watched from the balcony. Lucy attended her first badminton session aged just 5 years old and a couple of years later became a member of the club, which trains at the Sports Centre. SLOW COOKER RECIPES Beef Curry Preparation time - less than 30 mins Cooking time over 8 hours on low Serves 4-6 Ingredients 4 tbsp sunflower oil 800g/1lb 12oz beef braising steak, cut into 2.5cm/1in pieces 2 onions, finely chopped 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped 2 chillies, finely chopped, plus extra to taste 2.5cm/1in piece fresh root ginger 4 tsp ground cumin 4 tsp ground coriander 2 tsp ground turmeric 2 x 400g/14oz can chopped tomatoes 2 tsp garam masala 200g/7oz natural yoghurt small handful fresh chopped coriander (optional) Method Heat half of the oil in a frying pan and fry the beef pieces for 4-5 minutes, or until browned all over. (You may need to brown the meat in batches.) Tip the browned meat into the slow cooker. Heat the remaining oil in a frying pan and fry the onions for five minutes, then add the garlic, chilli and ginger and fry for another 2-3 minutes. Add the spices and fry for another minute, then tip the mixture into the slow cooker. Add the chopped tomatoes to the slow cooker, then fill one of the empty cans with water and add the water to the slow cooker. Stir everything together, pressing down so that everything is covered in liquid and cook for 8-10 hours on low. About 30 minutes before serving, stir in the garam masala and yoghurt and season to taste with salt and a little more chilli. Cook for a further 30 minutes, then stir in the coriander. Serve with rice and nan bread. Alternatively, you can cook this curry on the hob for 2-3 hours on a low heat, or until the beef is very tender.

Boys in The Woods Councillors John McGrath and Richard MacRae along with an Officer from Broxtowe Borough Council met mountain bikers in Stapleford Woods earlier today to finalise words for a code of conduct for the site. This will be the basic rules for general cycling and will go on signage in the designated area. The designated area will also be clearly identified by smaller signs at strategic points around the perimeter. The signs are in stock and posts are on order. In addition to this Broxtowe Borough Council will agree a more detailed code of practice which the group will sign up to. This will include what can and cannot be done in terms of digging and trail construction.

Broxtowe Borough Council needs local children to help make its play areas even better by answering a few questions on how they like to play to help shape a new play strategy. Children, with the help of their parents, are being asked to answer a range of questions about their favourite type of play spaces and activities as part of two online consultations run by the Council in partnership with Groundwork Greater Nottingham. IN THE COMMUNITY BRONZE AWARD FOR BROXTOWE NEIGHBOURHOOD WARDENS BROXTOWE BOROUGH COUNCIL’S Neighbourhood Wardens have been awarded bronze in the Community Animal Welfare Footprints and RSPCA Innovator awards for their stray dog service for the second year running. The Bronze Stray Dog Footprint award is recognition of the team, which is made up of 2 full time and 2 part time Neighbourhood Wardens, and their work to ensure stray dog welfare during the collection and kennelling processes, proactive work to educate owners, and preventative measures to reduce both straying and long-term strays. The team were assessed on a number of things including basic dog handling, health and safety, the treatment of injured or sick stray dogs, their out of hours service and education of owners. Chair of the Environment and Community Safety Committee, Councillor Mia Kee said: “The Neighbourhood Wardens do fantastic work to improve the welfare of stray dogs they find in the Borough. IN THE COMMUNITY NEW PENSION FREEDOMS EVERYONE SHOULD BE TAKING STEPS NOW New flexibility means anyone over 55 can take all their savings in cash, either all at once or as and when they need it. We need to raise awareness of what is likely to be a growing problem as hundreds of thousands of 55 plus savers gain access to pension lump sums. Also, the Flat Rate State Pension came into operation in April 2016 and full details will be explained during the courses. We are a partner with the Pensions Service (Department for Work and Pensions) and any new legislation will be explained in full during the courses. We aim to keep the courses very friendly and informal with an emphasis on the psychological approach to retirement and how to occupy the extra hours of leisure people will experience in retirement. Many people sleep-walk into retirement and spend more time planning a fortnightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s holiday than their retirement which could last a good 30 odd years or so. If ever the nation needed a wake-up call, then this is it. During the course, each delegate will be able to have a 1:1 with the speakers and also full updates will be given in relation to all the new regulations, together with calculations on the date men and women will receive their State Pension. BRAMCOTE CHRISTMAS SERVICE TO REMEMBER LOVED ONES FAMILIES AND FRIENDS can remember their loved ones during the Festive Season at the annual Christmas Service of Remembrance at the Bramcote Crematorium on Sunday 4th December. The service starts at 2.00pm in the Serenity chapel and will be led by Reverend Michael Grantham. The service, which has become a poignant feature in the Crematorium’s calendar will last about an hour and include readings, prayers and Carols, with musical contributions from Soloist Sarah Carlin. On arrival at the chapel, members of the congregation will be invited to light a candle in memory of their loved ones, whose names can also be read out during the act of remembrance, if the family so wish. This service has become a very popular event and can attract a large attendance. It is recommended that people arrive early to ensure a seat within the chapel and children of all ages are Bramcote Crematorium

DROP IN LEGAL SURGERY FOR DOMESTIC ABUSE FREE DROP IN LEGAL SURGERIES will be on offer for women who live in North Broxtowe and Stapleford, to access free legal information and advice in cases of domestic violence and abuse. Thanks to a partnership between Broxtowe Women’s Project and Nelsons Solicitors, family law specialist’s sessions will take place every other Wednesday starting on 4th May from 9.30am – 2.30pm. The sessions will offer: A private, safe space to talk through their concerns A chance to find out more about the legal options available to them An opportunity to obtain free legal advice in an emergency situation, in the time of a crisis Free impartial legal advice on a range of civil matters Many of the women who Broxtowe Women’s Project supports have a number of complex issues. This might mean they find it easier to remain in an abusive relationship. The sessions aim to make legal advice and support more accessible and to encourage them to move forward in their lives. The project is funded by the Police and Crime Commissioner for Priority Plus areas.
