Are we addicted to the way we look?

The pursuit of perfection has been promoted in our culture. Perfection is reinforced everywhere; on our television screens, in magazines, newspapers and social media.

Everyone is at risk of succumbing to society’s idea of ‘perfection’, both men and women, but women in particular.

Unfortunately, this is causing many people to believe that we should be something different from who we really are but it isn’t our fault. The pressure to achieve the impossible standard of perfection cannot be avoided.

But how do we deal with it?

It’s scary to think how quickly we can believe that we aren’t pretty or handsome enough or thin enough. We feel compelled to achieve a ‘perfect’ look.

Everyone has insecurities, but we should look beyond that and look at the things that make us who we are. Happiness should not be measured by how we look. Of course, there is nothing wrong in taking care of our appearance but sometimes it can be taken too far.

Often, we see stories in the media of how bullying in schools is unfortunately influencing teens to want to change

their appearance, including physical features that couldn’t be changed as easily before. But now, they can. Now teens are increasingly turning towards plastic surgery or non-surgical procedures such as lip fillers. The pressure of having an instagrammable face and body is becoming too much. Take Kylie Jenner, a much-hated name by parents in some households but much loved by many teenage girls.

Kylie Jenner has admitted to having, and continues to have, lip fillers to make her lips larger to achieve a ‘perfect pout’, and many teens are wanting to recreate this look. The lip filler industry is reportedly worth a staggering £2.7 billion in the UK today whilst in 2015, 46,526 women in the UK had plastic surgery.

What message is this sending out to young girls?

I can relate to people who want to change something about the way they look, especially if it has bothered them for years. But teenagers should really consider the long-term implications of changing, for example, the shape of their lips or in fact any part of their body because they are going to have to live with it for the rest of their lives. Cosmetic procedures don’t always turn out how they are supposed to and can cause complications.

Whilst there are still many teens aspiring to look like their favourite celebrities who may have had cosmetic surgery, there are people who are setting a more realistic

example and teaching the younger generation to accept who they are. Some former models and reality TV stars are turning their backs on cosmetic surgery, for example Katie Price who has had earlier surgery reversed which sends a powerful message to young girls. Some YouTubers such as Zoella teach young people to embrace their natural looks, which can only encourage teenagers to do the same.

But, if you do want to change something about your appearance, consider all of the options. Make sure you do it for the right reasons, weigh up the advantages and disadvantages and make sure you fully research the procedure you may want. Don’t follow trends and only do it for yourself, not for anyone else. At the end of the day, it’s the person you are that matters, the way you look makes you an individual and it is what makes you unique.

The High Kings, the true heirs of Ireland’s Folk Heritage, are the most exciting Irish folk group to come along in years. Comprising Brian Dunphy, Finbarr Clancy, Martin Furey and Darren Holden, they are all Internationally acclaimed singers of Irish folk songs. A quartet of accomplished musical pedigrees, the band first exploded onto the Irish folk music scene in 2008. A Message from Stapleford Community Group With Melbourne Road between its junction of Ilkeston Road and Ramsey Close set to close for almost 3 Months several residents have already raised concerns. Grown Ups Choice Dangerous Cargo by J M Shorney There is just something for everyone here – a mystery to solve, a bit of sex (but not too much!), intrigue, thrills, danger, shooting, gangsters and undercover shenanigans. The story is part of a series, and although I was

aware of that, it didn’t affect the enjoyment or understanding of Dangerous Cargo. I do now feel the urge to start the series with book one, to find out what other situations Aidan has managed to get himself into – he’s a likeable rouge. In this story he has no option but to go undercover and discover the reason his old colleague was shot in the street, right in front of him. As a genuine ex-con he has all the right credentials to infiltrate a crime family and reveal their secrets – some of which are most unexpected. The book is just the right length,

and has a good pace. The characters are easy to imagine and there are enough to keep the story detailed but not confusing. There are a few moments where it feels a little contrived, but I like it even more for that, it was everything a crime drama should be without the need for excessively graphic violence (although a lot of people do get killed…). This would make a good holiday read, and you could even work your way through the whole series, as I have a feeling they are a bit addictive. If you like things a little darker, you can try J.M Shor-

ney’s gothic horror Night of All Evil.

I feel very lucky to have read an advanced copy of this new Donaldson book via NetGalley. It’s everything you would expect from the great childrens author—there are wonderful rhyming pages with loveable characters.

Our older children did guess who the Giant Jumperee was, but it was still lots of fun to guess what each animal would do to find it. The illustrations are by the amazing Helen Oxenbury and certainly add a very whimsical air to the whole story.

Barbecue Food Safety Food poisoning cases double over the summer, so remember these simple steps to help keep food safe.

Food poisoning is usually mild, and most people get better within a week.

But sometimes it can be more severe, even deadly, so it's important to take the risks seriously. Children, older people and those with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to food poisoning.

"The safest option is to cook food indoors using your oven," says a spokesperson from the Food Standards Agency (FSA). "You can then put the cooked food outside on the barbecue for flavour." This can be an easier option if you're cooking for a lot of people at the same time.

If you are only cooking on the barbecue, the two main risk factors are: undercooked meat spreading germs from raw meat onto food that's ready to eat, This is because raw or undercooked meat can contain germs that cause food poisoning, such as salmonella, E.coli and campylobacter. However, these germs can be killed by cooking meat until it is piping hot throughout.

Cooking meat on a barbecue When you’re cooking any kind of meat on a barbecue, such as poultry (chicken or turkey), pork, steak, burgers or sausages, make sure: the coals are glowing red with a powdery grey surface before you start cooking, as this means that they’re hot enough frozen meat is properly thawed before you cook it you turn the meat regularly and move it around the barbecue to cook it evenly Remember that meat is safe to eat only when: it is piping hot in the centre there is no pink meat visible any juices are clear “Don’t assume that because meat is charred on the outside it will be cooked properly on the inside,” says the FSA spokesperson. “Cut the meat at the thickest part and ensure none of it is pink on the inside.”

Some meat, such as steaks and joints of beef or lamb, can be served rare (not cooked in the middle) as long as the outside has been properly cooked. This will kill any bacteria that might be on the outside of the meat. However, food made from minced meat, such as sausages and burgers, must be cooked thoroughly all the way through.

Spiced Lamb Casserole

Ingredients 50ml oil 1,4kg sliced lamb knuckles 1 large onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 5ml turmeric 5ml ground cinnamon 5ml peeled, grated root ginger 10ml ground coriander 2ml ground cumin 2 Granny Smith apples, peeled and diced 50ml chutney 10ml brown sugar 5ml salt 125ml white wine 250ml stock 100ml seedless raisins

Method Heat oil in large, heavy frying pan and add knuckles. When well

browned remove to baking dish. Turn heat to low, add a dash more oil if necessary and sautĂŠ onion. Add garlic and all the spices and toss for a minute, then add apples and remaining ingredients. Mix well, pour over lamb, cover and bake at 160ÂşC for 2 hours. Adjust seasoning and thicken gravy if necessary. Serve with rice or potatoes, or wedges with a side salad.

Stapleford Cleans Up Spring cleaning and community spirit were in full swing last month, as residents in Stapleford helped improve the environment in and around Matthews Court, Meredith Court, Byron Court, Sheridan Courts and Aaron Close.

Broxtowe Council housing officers joined forces with residents along with council contractors Vinshire Heating & Plumbing Ltd., Novus Solutions and the Council’s ground maintenance team to provide a spring clean to communal areas and walkways.

A skip was made available to dispose of bulky domestic items such as unwanted furniture and garden waste this was due to a good turnout of both younger and older residents.

Andrew Besford, Operations Manager for Novus Property Solutions said : “At Novus we love getting involved in these types of community events, as a local employer we pride ourselves on respecting the neighbourhoods in which we work and take great pleasure in assisting to create a cleaner country, free from litter”.

This year marks the fourth year of the Council’s popular Community Clean events which help improve the local area and generate a strong sense of community spirit throughout the Borough.

Local girls help build a 500-strong ‘Ginormous Choir’ in a day!

500 members of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire gathered in Nottingham’s Albert Hall on Sunday 23rd April to build a ‘Ginormous Choir’ in just a day. Those taking included members of Rainbows (aged 5-7), Brownies (7-10), Guides (10-14), Rangers & Senior Section (14-25), plus adult leaders and volunteers from all over the county.

Amongst a contingent from Beeston & Chilwell Division were Niamh Perry (6) and Rebecca Sunderland (6) of 3rd Beeston Rainbows. Both girls were very excited to be singing with so many other people and said their favourite song was Under The Sea. ‘It’s because it’s easy to learn,’ they explained.

They sang alongside girls from Attenborough & Toton Division, including Scarlett Davis-Hill (7) and Libby Baker (7) of 3rd Attenborough Rainbows. The pair said they loved singing with all the other Rainbows, and their favourite song was also Under The Sea. ‘It’s because my favourite Disney princess is Ariel,’ explained Libby, whilst Scarlett said it was because she likes going to the beach.

The day’s activities were led by a team from community arts organisation Music for Everyone, who steered the scratch choir

through a selection of well-loved tunes from favourite Disney movies. The morning was filled by group workshops and rehearsals, with each age group given their own songs to work on, and the event closed with an informal concert where the ‘Ginormous Choir’ sang for their families and friends.

Girlguiding Nottinghamshire’s County Commissioner Jackie Brocklehurst sang along with the girls during rehearsals, opting to join the audience for the concert. ‘It was great to see so many of our members of all ages working – and singing – together,’ she said.

‘Girlguiding is all about trying new challenges in a non-competitive, girls-only environment, which is exactly what we’ve done here today.’

Girlguiding Nottinghamshire is recruiting additional adult volunteers in order to whittle down the waiting lists and create more opportunities like the Ginormous Choir for girls and young women all over the county.

How YOU Can Help Towards Helping the Hemlock Happening Grow Even Bigger and Better!

The organisers of the Hemlock Happening applied to Tesco’s “Bags of Help” scheme with the aim of attracting extra funding to make this annual event even bigger and better, and have just heard that they have been shortlisted for an award!

Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – all raised from the 5p bag levy – being awarded to local community projects.

“Bags of Help” offers community groups and projects across the UK a share of revenue generated from the 5p charge levied on single-use carrier bags. The public will now vote in store during May and June on who should receive the £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 awards.

The selection of which project gets which award is down to Tesco customers who will have the opportunity to vote for their preferred project after every purchase they make at one a local Tesco.

So please do vote for The Hemlock Happening when you do your shopping in local Tesco stores. Voting will start during the week ending 7th May and end on 30th June 2017.

Stapleford Community Group - New Community Centre The Planning Committee at Broxtowe Borough Council unanimously voted in full support of the planning application to allow St Helen’s Church to turn the former Post Office then Hairdresser’s at Montrose Court into a Community Centre/Church.

This is great news and will no doubt be a massive benefit to the wider community, Stapleford Community Group are going to be carrying out fundraising to help the centre.

Volunteers from St Helen’s Church have already being having a great presence on the estate and recently carried out several events which have all had a great attendance from local residents.

Stapleford Curate Lydia Cartwright said she hopes that the community facility could be open in May and is very happy that Broxtowe Borough Council gave it’s full support at the Planning Committee earlier this evening.

Stapleford Councillor Richard MacRae who is a member of the Planning Committee gave his full support and spoke about how there is such a need for this facility which will be a massive benefit to the wider community.

As Secretary for Stapleford Community Group we are looking forward to working with St Helen’s Church and will be fundraising with the aim of paying for the Internet to be installed in the facility.

DROP IN LEGAL SURGERY FOR DOMESTIC ABUSE FREE DROP IN LEGAL SURGERIES will be on offer for women who live in North Broxtowe and Stapleford, to access free legal information and advice in cases of domestic violence and abuse.

Thanks to a partnership between Broxtowe Women’s Project and Nelsons Solicitors, family law specialist’s sessions will take place every other Wednesday starting on 4th May from 9.30am – 2.30pm.

The sessions will offer: A private, safe space to talk through their concerns A chance to find out more about the legal options available to them An opportunity to obtain free legal advice in an emergency situation, in the time of a crisis Free impartial legal advice on a range of civil matters Many of the women who Broxtowe Women’s Project supports have a number of complex issues. This might mean they find it easier to remain in an abusive relationship. The sessions aim to make legal advice and support more accessible and to encourage them to move forward in their lives.

The project is funded by the Police and Crime Commissioner for Priority Plus areas.

Instead our workers will: support you and work with you to help you feel in control of your own life and your own decisions we have a lot of experience and information which we will use to help you find the right path for you if we can’t answer all of your questions or provide you with all the help and support you need, then we will know other agencies that can. Living in a violent relationship destroys confidence and self respect.
