Happy New Gardening Year.

It's not been a bad winter hasn’t been too bad for us! I have been able to get out and do a bit over the past few weeks and it's great to get out into our gardens even just for an hour, makes such a difference.

The nights are slowly starting to draw out and the gardens are starting to wake up as the spring bulbs make an appearance and, in some places, the early daffodils are in bloom.

Hellebores, which I absolutely love are showing plenty of colour now and February is the month for the Snowdrop so enjoy what colour you have coming in your garden and remember, Spring is on the way!

Here’s a few jobs you can be getting on with throughout February and early March .

Continue to plant bare-root trees, shrubs and roses as long as the ground is not frozen or waterlogged Mulch perennial vegetables such as Asparagus and Artichokes with well rotted manure or garden compost Start chitting early potatoes - stand them on end in a module tray or egg box and place them in a bright, cool, frost-free place Start sowing vegetable seeds such as leeks , onions, and celeriac under cover Lift and divide snowdrops once they have flowered and ‘still in the green’ if you want to move them or create more plants

The Joy Of Snowdrops One of the first flowers to see as we go into the new year, the Snowdrop and when they are in flower we know that the brighter days of spring are on the way.

It is an herbaceous plant that belongs to the family Amaryllidaceae. There are 20 different species of snowdrops that originate from Europe and Asia and some species are listed as vulnerable or even endangered.

Plant Of The Month HELLEBORUS ORIENTALIS (Lenten Rose) Helleborus orientalis is one of the nicest plants I can think of for colour in the garden in February & March, that is why it’s my plant of the month.

Hellebores produce large clusters of saucer-shaped flowers with white, pink, green, mauve or smoky purple flowers. The large leathery, evergreen leaves persist throughout the year but should be cut back in the spring when flowers and new foliage emerge so then you can really focus on the magnificent blooms. Hellebores are perennial, long-lived, and become larger each year. They bring colour to any border and can be used in a rock garden and woodland garden and will even naturalise.

Flowering period: Late winter to early spring Height and Spread: 30cm (12”) - 90cm (36”) Position: Sun or shade Soil: Humus - rich, well drained Hardiness: Hardy perennial Propagation: By division in early spring after flowering or in later in the year in September.

Divide the clump into several pieces of a reasonable size and replant Pruning: Remove faded flowers after flowering and keep plants tidy by removing damaged leaves Pest and Diseases: They suffer from certain pest and disease problems such as hellebore aphid, hellebore black death, hellebore leaf miner and leaf spot. Dig In is Stapleford's very own community allotment, run by local people for local people. Based at the Albany Allotments site on Pasture Road, it offers lots of planting space, knowledge, experience, and the opportunity to get growing together in a friendly and helpful environment. It is open to all and it is completely free; all the tools, seeds, and everything you need to get gardening are provided, whatever your age or level of ability.

We have people coming to the site from a variety of backgrounds and with different levels of growing experience. It doesn't matter if you don't know where to start, volunteers help each other out and we all work together. We run regular Wednesday and Saturday sessions 10 am to noon at the site which are open to all to get involved.

Everyone who takes part gets to take something away with them. That might mean new skills to try in their own garden, or plants to grow at home on a patio, balcony or yard. Local Residents urged to support Hospice Lottery Scheme A CHARITY initiative which has raised more than £8m for a local hospice is appealing to residents to support its cause.

The Treetops Hospice Lottery, which celebrated its 25th birthday last year, gives players the chance to win prizes up to £1,000. All proceeds from the lottery help the hospice to provide free nursing care and emotional support for adults with life-limiting illnesses, those who’ve been bereaved, and their families.

A.W. Lymn Funeral Director becomes one of the Youngest NAFD Examiners Colum O’Shea, Funeral Director at Nottinghamshire’s largest independent family funeral directors, A.W. Lymn The Family Funeral Service, is now one of the youngest examiners for The National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD).

The NAFD is the largest representative organisation for the UK funeral profession, providing support and guidance to funeral firms and the bereaved families that are in its care. Colum decided to apply for the volunteer examiner role to celebrate his 10-year milestone with A.W. Lymn. After successfully making it through the application process, at 30 years old, Colum is now one of the youngest examiners on the board. As part of his responsibilities, Colum will attend NAFD meetings and assist in the construction of examination papers and marking thereof for students sitting exams for the new funeral directing diploma this year.He said: “I am incredibly proud to take on this new challenge and hopefully help other young professionals in the funeral industry. It’s an honour to be a part of a team that is rich in experience and diversity to ensure the highest standards are delivered throughout the examination process.”At just 15 years old, Colum’s passion for the funeral industry was ignited when he joined A.W. Lymn on a work experience placement. Four years later, Colum was working full-time for A.W. Lymn on its trainee programme, a four-year residential course that helps kick-start a career in the funeral industry.

As part of the programme, trainees work in each department of the business and gain the following qualifications: Membership of Institute of Advanced Motorists, stone masonry memorial fixer’s licence, Diploma FAA (funeral arranging and administration) and NAFD DipFD (funeral directing) Membership of the British Institute of Embalmers, Emergency First Aid at Work.

Colum said he is already onto his next educational venture, training for his Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement. “It is an incredible opportunity to have the NAFD invest in me as an examiner and put me onto this training course. I am proud to represent A.W. Lymn and work amongst such experienced professionals”. Jackie Lymn Rose, Company Director at A.W. Lymn, is also part of the NAFD examiner board after first joining in 1996. She said: “We are very proud of Colum and all his achievements since he first joined our family business. He is a real asset to the team and a well-respected funeral director within the local community. British Legion set for latest Wall Art. Work has commenced on Beeston Street Art’s 47th Street Art installation. It joins an ever-growing number of artworks across the area, it’s been commissioned by Beeston Royal British Legion (RBL).

Sinuous poppy stems entwine grey pillars bursting into colour at full height. They are flanked by fields of Flanders poppies repeated on each side of every vertical.

The artwork at RBL’s club on Hallcroft is just off Chilwell Road where recently completed huge artworks adorn gable-end walls along the route.

The club’s entertainment officer Dave Clifford said: ‘We are delighted to have joined with Beeston Civic Society who introduced us to the artist through Beeston Street Art. Our members are enthusiastic about the artwork which will certainly brighten the dismal grey walled approach to our club’ From her studio workshops in Nottingham’s Gamble Street artist Anna Woodhouse designed the colourful artwork that features poppies intermingled with bees.

Anna commented: ‘This commission is both an honour to undertake and provides playful elements as bees intermingle emanating from the Beeston Civic beehive to take flight across the mural’ Beeston’s award-winning Street Art is recognised nationally and internationally.

It engenders comment, conversation and interaction amongst visitors and local folk alike. Beeston Civic Society Executive member Mervyn Brown said ‘This sumptuous design signifies hope for a world without conflict. The project has been inspired by the work of international artist Hetain Patel and Beeston library are working alongside him to express ideas of place and belonging with the community.

Chicken and Broccoli Bake Ingredients • 350g pasta shells • 200g broccoli, cut into very small florets and the stems thinly sliced • 2 tbsp olive oil • 350g boneless, skinless chicken breasts, thinly sliced • 175g chestnut mushrooms, quartered • 4 tbsp sundried tomato paste • 80g soft cheese with garlic and herbs • 284ml carton single cream or low-fat cream For the topping • bunch of spring onions, finely sliced • 85g mature cheddar, grated • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped • handful of breadcrumbs (optional) Method 1.Heat the oven to 190C/ fan170C/ gas 5. Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil. Throw in 350g pasta shells , stir well and return to the boil.

2.Cook for 6 minutes, then add 200g broccoli, cut into very small florets and stems thinly sliced, and cook for 5-6 minutes more until the pasta is just cooked. Drain well, then return to the pan.

3.Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a wide pan, add 350g thinly sliced boneless, skinless chicken breasts and fry until lightly browned.

4.Tip in 175g quartered chestnut mushrooms and stir fry for 1 minute, then stir in 4 tbsp sundried tomato paste, 80g soft cheese with garlic and herbs and a 284ml carton single cream.

5.Gently simmer, stirring, until the cheese has melted to thicken the sauce. Season with salt and pepper.

6.Pour the sauce over the pasta, stirring gently until coated, then tip into a shallow ovenproof dish (about 1.7 litre capacity) and level the top.

7.Mix a bunch of finely sliced spring onions, 85g grated mature cheddar, 1 finely chopped garlic clove for the topping and sprinkle over the pasta. Bake for 15- 20 minutes until golden. Place breadcrumbs on the top and cook until breadcrumb’s are lightly browned.

Nottingham charities are inviting golfers to sign up a fundraising 18 holes that could change the lives of local women, children and young people.

The Rotary Club of Beeston has announced that is now accepting entries for its 25th annual Charity Golf Day, which will be held on Wednesday 25 May at Beeston Fields Golf Club. It’s chosen charities for 2022 are Broxtowe Women’s Project (BWP) and Broxtowe Youth Homelessness.

Steve Diacon, President of Beeston Rotary, said: “It’s fantastic that our popular Charity Golf Day is back for 2022. After a break of two years, we know that many local people and organisations will see this as a fantastic opportunity to get back out there and support local charities while enjoying a day of exciting competition followed by a delicious three-course meal.

“We look forward to signing up lots of teams over the coming weeks.”

1.5m Domestic Abuse Funding for Notts.

Nottinghamshire County Council has been awarded £1.5m by the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities to support and protect adults and children affected by domestic abuse within safe accommodation.

The County Council will use the funding to deliver year two of its three year commissioning plan in partnership with district and borough councils, domestic abuse services, the police and the Police and Crime Commissioner.

The funding will go towards: •

Safe accommodation and support services e.g. supporting survivors to get new accommodation, access new schools, access funding, help with safety planning, emotional support, mental health support, etc.

•

Provision of specialist children’s workers within refuges.

•

Increasing therapeutic support for survivors of domestic abuse.

•

Last year, the County Council used the Government money to fund support services within refuges, provide children’s workers within refuges, train front line staff and embed domestic abuse specialists within housing teams. Evidence shows that these projects are working well and the Council is continuing to build on these in year two of its commissioning plan. Councillor Boyd Elliott, Chairman of Adult Social Care and Public Health Committee, said: “We’re delighted that our funding has continued from last year, as we have already had some successes with our work so far. We can now work with our partners on delivering the next steps of our plan.“The last couple of years have been difficult, with the pandemic leading to an increase in domestic abuse referrals. However, our local support services have really stepped up and I am confident that our joint plans will further improve the outcomes for domestic abuse survivors in Nottinghamshire.” 4800 domestic abuse survivors received support in Nottinghamshire in 2020/21. Based on current figures, it is expected that over 5000 people will receive support in 2021/22.

What to do if you need urgent police help through the 999 service, but can’t speak If you’re in an emergency situation and need police help, but can’t speak, Make Yourself Heard and let the 999 operator know your call is genuine.

WHEN YOU CALL 999 All 999 calls are directed to call centres and will be answered

by BT operators. They will ask which service you need. If no service is requested but anything suspicious is heard throughout the process, BT operators will connect you to a police call handler.

IF YOU CALL 999 FROM A MOBILE It is always best to speak to the operator if you can, even by whispering. You may also be asked to cough or tap the keys on your phone in response to questions.

If making a sound would put you or someone else in danger and the BT operator cannot decide whether an emergency service is needed, your call will be transferred to the Silent Solution system.

The Silent Solution is a police system used to filter out large numbers of accidental or hoax 999 calls. It also exists to help people who are unable to speak, but who genuinely need police assistance.

You will hear an automated police message, which lasts for 20

seconds and begins with ‘you are through to the police’. It will ask you to press 55 to be put through to police call management. The BT operator will remain on the line and listen. If you press 55, they will be notified and transfer the call to the police. If you don’t press 55, the call will be terminated.

Pressing 55 does not allow police to track your location.

WHAT THEN? When transferred to your local police force, the police call handler will attempt to communicate with you by asking simple yes or no questions. If you are not able to speak, listen carefully to the questions and instructions from the call handler so they can assess your call and arrange help if needed.

IF YOU CALL 999 FROM A LANDLINE Because it’s less likely that 999 calls are made by accident from landlines, the Silent Solution system is not used.

If, when an emergency call on a landline is received: - there is no request for an emergency - the caller does not answer questions - only background noise can be heard and BT operators cannot decide whether an emergency service is needed, then you will be connected to a police call handler as doubt exists.

If you replace the handset, the landline may remain connected for 45 seconds in case you pick it up again.

If you pick up again during this 45 seconds and the BT operator is concerned for your safety, the call will be connected to police.

When 999 calls are made from landlines, information about where you’re calling from should be automatically available to the call handlers to help provide a response.

The idea is to provide especially designed singing sessions for adults with learning difficulties or disabilities. Linking in with the expertise of Open Wings (based in Sherwood) and Reach (based in Southwell), MfE hopes to create a whole network of Open Voices singing groups in Nottinghamshire.

Come and try it for free. The first session you attend will be a free taster session.

After this, there will be a fee of £2 per session, covering everything you need, plus a ‘half-time’ cup of tea or coffee + biscuits! Subsidised places are available.
