Pinched parents kit out kids at charity shops As the recession continues to bite, we are turning into a nation of charity shop bargain hunters with one in four families turning to the outlets for cut price fashion. The number of parents relying on charity shops and toys for their offspring has rocketed by 50% over the past five years - and the stigma associated with second-hand clothes has all but disappeared. Research from VoucherCodes.co.uk's latest Parent Poll has found that an increasing number are suffering from "post natal recession" - being forced by the rising cost of living to find ways to cut down on the amount they spend on their children. A third of the 2,000 parents quizzed say that they are spending less this year than last with the average parting with ÂŁ60 per month to clothe and entertain their children. Seventy per cent of the lowest income families - those earning Ă‚ÂŁ20,000 a year - blame the rising cost of the weekly shop as the primary cause of the child spending cut-backs. However, this is good news for the UK's charity shops as they are welcoming a growing number of parents through their doors in the battle to keep pace with their rapidly-growing offspring. One in five parents even say they are even buying birthday gifts for other people's kids from charity shops and 23% plan to buy their Christmas gifts from a charity shop this year. Some charities, like the British Red Cross and Barnados, have even opened specially-dedicated children's shops where parents can purchase clothes, toys and accessories at knock-down prices. A Barnardo's spokesman says: "With children growing at such an alarming rate, they are either outgrowing clothes or in need of new ones. "Our children's stores are a one-stop shop for your little one and sell donated children's clothes, as well as toys and other items that are in demand." As well as snapping up a bargain, parents can be reassured in the knowledge that their money is going towards funding work with vulnerable and disadvantaged children in the UK.

Other findings in the Parent Poll include: Birmingham is the charity shop capital with more than a third of kids dressed in charity shop garb 35% of parents use discount deals and vouchers to reduce how much their child-related spend 20% of parents aged 25-34 would be happy to buy another child a charity shop birthday gift 28% of the lowest income households are cutting back on child-related spending in a bid to take their family on a summer holiday Duncan Jennings, co-founder of VoucherCodes.co.uk, says: “Our research shows that any perceived stigma around thrifty shopping is disappearing as parents are forced to find affordable clothes and toys for their children during this difficult economic period.

“The increased reliance on charity shops coupled with the growing popularity of online deals and high street discounts, means that by making just a few small changes to the way they shop, parents can really cut back on what they spend without cutting back on what they give.” http://www.freefeatures.com.

Some amazing facts -WW1

An explosion on the battlefield in

France was heard in London While the war raged on in the mud and trenches, a very different war was taking place beneath the soldiers’ feet. A group of miners, operating in total secrecy, dug tunnels up to 100ft underground, to plant and detonate mines beneath the enemy’s trenches. Their biggest success was at Messines Ridge in Belgium where over 900,000lbs of explosives were simultaneously detonated in 19 underground tunnels. Much of the German front line was destroyed, and the explosions were heard 140 miles away by the British prime minister in Downing St. Journalists faced execution A handful of journalists risked their lives to report on the realities of war. As the Government sought to control the flow of information from the frontline at the start of the war, journalists were banned. Reporting on the conflict was, in the opinion of the War Office, helping the enemy. If caught, they faced the death penalty.

18

12 million letters were delivered to the front every week Astonishingly, it only took two days for a letter from Britain to reach the front in France. The journey began at a purpose-built sorting depot in Regent’s Park before being shipped to the trenches. By the end of the war, two billion letters and 114 million parcels had had been delivered. War work turned some women’s skin yellow When a generation of men went to fight the war, more than a million women took their place in the workforce. They worked long hours, often in poor conditions and with dangerous chemicals. The so-called ‘canaries’ were women who worked with TNT, which gave them toxic jaundice and turned their skin yellow. WW1 sparked the invention of plastic surgery Shrapnel was the cause of many facial injuries in WW1 and unlike the straightline wounds inflicted by bullets, the twisted metal shards produced from a shrapnel blast could easily rip a face off. Horrified by the injuries he saw, surgeon Harold Gillies, took on the task of helping victims and pioneered early techniques of facial reconstruction in the process. The youngest British soldier was 12 years old Sidney Lewis was just 12 years old when he lied about his age and joined the army during World War One. He was one of thousands of eager underage boys who enlisted and ended up fighting alongside their adult counterparts on the front. Some were motivated by patriotism, but for others it was an escape from their dreary lives.

He now oversees installations, whilst Claire uses her design skills working alongside customers. The company’s Haydn Road showroom houses examples of solutions to awkward storage problems and shows how carousels, pull-out larders, internal baskets etc can be incorporated to increase usable space. Claire said: “You cannot have your kitchen or bathroom out of action for too long. We organise the whole thing for you – all in-house – so that the work runs smoothly and with as little disruption as possible.” The company is featured in the Age Concern’s business directory, which lists reputable companies committed to excellent customer service. This gives customers and their families extra peace of mind when having an installation carried out.

Long Eaton Operatic Society Youth Group proudly presents.......Seussical JR Seussical Jr is based on the works of Dr. Seuss and weaves together his most famous tales, Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat and other characters from at least fifteen of his books. The Cat in the Hat is the narrator, and the show follows the adventures of Horton, an elephant who one day hears voices coming from a speck of dust. He soon discovers that within this tiny speck exists the smallest planet in the universe! On this tiny planet live a tiny race of creatures known as the Whos. Although ridiculed by the other animals in the Jungle of Nool for believing in something he cannot see, Horton stubbornly persists in his belief that the Whos exist. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant! The youngsters are very busy rehearsing and are looking forward to presenting this lively production, brimming over with energy and a sparkling musical score, where everyone gets their moment to shine. The show takes place from Thursday 3rd to Saturday 5th July 2014, starting at 7.30pm, with a matinee performance on Saturday at 2.30pm. This amateur production is presented by arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH LIMITED

The People’s Theatre Company are proud to be associated with this production as part of Trent To Trenches - honouring the men and women who fought for our freedom - supporting Help For Heroes and The Royal British Legion. The show, based on an early 1900’s end-of-the-pier Pierrot show, featuring the songs of the era as the soldiers sang them to get through the experience of war, including Goodbye-ee, Gassed last Night, Pack up Your Troubles and Keep the Home Fires Burning. The production constantly plays with the contrast between reality and the madcap action of the Pierrot clowns. Let us all remember them. 1914-1918.

Bee Vigilant!

How to encourage Bees into your garden. With the global decline of bees,

it has never been more important to support the pollinator population in your garden.

The Royal Horticultural Society reports Britain as having 25 species of bumblebees, of which about 11 commonly visit garden flowers. They also state that there are about 260 species of solitary bee in Britain, all of which have been in decline in the last 50 years for a variety of reasons. How to encourage bees Perhaps the best way to encourage bees of all type into you garden is by providing them with flowers from February to November. Five ways to help bees: 1.Clumps of bee-friendly plants in sunny places will be more attractive than plants that are scattered or in shade. 2.Double or multi-petaled cultivars of plants are best avoided as they may lack pollen and/or nectar, or it may be difficult for bees to reach them. 3. Also avoid pollen-free cultivars of some plants, such as sunflowers, that are grown as florists’ flowers.

24

4.Use pesticides sparingly. Those based on fatty acids or plant oils and extracts pose little danger to bees but will not control all pests. Avoid spraying open flowers and if possible do spraying in the evening when bees are less active 5.Become a beekeeper. Details of county beekeepers associations and training courses can be found on the British Beekeepers’ Association website www.bbka. org.uk 4.Provide nest sites for solitary bees. Some will nest in hollow stems, such as bamboo canes or herbaceous plant stems. Hole diameters in the range 2-8mm are required. Cardboard nest tubes can be bought in garden centres. Holes 2-8mm diameter can be drilled in fence posts or logs. Place these nest sites in sunny positions. Some solitary bees nest in the ground, either in bare soil or short turf. They will find their own nest sites, so tolerate the small mounds of soil deposited by the female bees when they excavate their nest tunnels. Bumblebee nest boxes can be purchased but they are often ignored by queen bumblebees. They prefer to find their own nest sites down tunnels dug by mice or in grass tussocks.

Will I get stung? Getting stung by bees in your garden is unlikely, as long as you treat bees with respect. All female bees have stings, but solitary bees are not at all aggressive and only using their stings in self-defence if roughly handled.

Late summer flowers attracting bees include angelica, aster, buddleia, cardoon, cornflower, dahlia (single-flowered), delphinium, eryngium, fuchsia, globe thistle, ivy, lavender, penstemon, scabious and sedum.

Similarly bumblebees and honeybees are unlikely to sting while they are going about their business of collecting nectar and pollen if they are left alone. Avoid disturbing bumblebee nests or standing too close to a bee hive unless you are wearing a beekeeper’s suit. Flowers to tempt Bees Hawthorn and potentilla, part of the rose family seem to be irresistible to bees, as are fennel, angelica, cow parsley and sedum flowers. snapdragons and heathers, are also all favourite feeding grounds for bees. Spring flowers attracting bees include bugle, bluebells crab apple, daffodil, the beautiful flowering cherry and currant, forget-me-not, hellebore, pulmonaria, pussy willow, rhododendron, rosemary, viburnum and thrift. To tempt the bees in early summer plant aquilegia, astilbe, campanula, everlasting sweet pea, fennel, geranium, potentilla, stachys, teasel, thyme and verbascum.

Make Your Garden a Home for Bees The more flowers you plant, the more varieties of bees you will attract into your garden, and the more flowers and vegetables will be pollinated. This is particularly important for fruit and vegetable growers as apples, plums, pears, cherries, raspberries, blackberries, blackcurrants, red currants, gooseberries and strawberries, broad beans, runner beans and some members of the marrow-pumpkin family all rely on insects to bring about pollination. Be conscious that you should never use pesticides on plants while they are in flower, as this will harmbees.

I Care, You Care, We Care We all hear in the news that we are living

longer than we did 50 years ago, is this to do with better health care, better diets or better living conditions? Whatever the reason we need to make sure we handle the demand on our health and social care services in the future. Currently adult social care employs 1.63 million people to meet the demand we have, by 2025 the demand for social care will increase by at least half a million. Finding, keeping and developing enough Caregivers to meet the current and future need for care and support is a massive challenge. Many people do not understand what social care is or the opportunities it presents and it is important that careers in care are promoted in a new, fresh, positive way. This is the key reason Skills for Care introduced the I Care ...Ambassador service. The main aim of the service is to raise the profile of social care as a career by sharing experience, promoting positive images and raising awareness of the roles, opportunities, route ways and resources available to people making career choices. Primo Sule from Home Instead Senior Care said ‘ we joined the initiative in late 2013 and since then we have signed up more than 15 percent of our workforce, this means we are giving the opportunity to Caregivers to share their passion in supporting others and promoting the many opportunities that the sector presents.’ Caregivers use their experience, expertise and knowledge to influence the recruitment and retention of the social care workforce ensuring

34

we have enough of the right people to provide high quality care and support services. I Care ...Ambassadors also attend extra training and use their new found knowledge to increase independence of our clients. Four of our Caregivers attended Chair Based Exercise Instructor Training Classes provided by Nottingham CityCare Partnership. Chair based exercise is a great way of reducing the risk of a fall by improving co ordination, health and general wellbeing. Some of the exercises are specially adapted to help people maintain or regain independence after an illness; it has also been proven to help those living with long term conditions such as diabetes and Parkinson’s. Our caregivers encourage and stimulate clients to remain independent and this is just one example of how they achieve this. One of our Caregivers said ‘the training has helped me feel more confident about helping my clients to increase physical activity and help reduce the risk of falling. I felt good about signposting the daughter of a client to get some professional advice about health and wellbeing, I would not have known about the different services if I did not attend the training. I am looking forward to helping others. Primo Sule Home Instead Senior Care 0115 9226116

RADFORD CARE GROUP Hidden away in a corner of Radford is a small but busy care centre providing a place of warmth, safety and fun, where those over 50 can spend a day with friends and be part of their community. This is Radford Care Group which provides both a friendship group and day care, operating side by side and offering a wide range of services and activities for older people who want to spend time with friends or who may have greater care needs but want support to remain independent whilst enjoying the many activities that Radford Care Group can offer. See our website (www. radfordcaregroup.org.uk)Part of their provision is the care for those with dementia – an increasingly worrying condition for our older population and those caring at home. Radford Care Group has a team of dedicated carers who successfully support those with dementia and provide families with a day of respite at home. Also provided now is additional help for families in this situation who want to know more about this very disabling and confusing condition. It is specifically for families and friends, not paid carers, and is called Making Sense of Dementia (an Information Programme for carers of people with dementia). The ‘Programme’ runs for seven weeks and is just two hours a week. During the two hoursessions, carers learn about the different types of dementia, how dementia affects the brain. Carers will also learn how dementia can affect communication, behaviour and appetite and what to do when the situation becomes difficult. The final sessions cover infection control, continence management, welfare benefits, legal and financial information and local services. One very positive aspect of the sessions is the chance to meet other carers in the same situation which enables people to share experiences, feel less isolated and learn a lot from each other. Many friendships are made at these groups. There are usually about 10 people but may be more.

38

In order to enable it to be accessible to all, you may choose from a weekday, Saturday morning or weekday evening at Radford Care Group where respite care for the person with dementia can also be arranged. We also try, where possible, to help with transport. The programme is available to carers in Nottingham City and the County. Carers are asked to contribute £2.50 per session. Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided and lots of written information to take home. Every effort is made to ensure that the groups are very friendly, relaxed and welcoming. The carers are asked to let us know what they think of the programme and there have been some very positive comments. “Saturday mornings won’t be the same without the group,” ‘I have never learnt so much in such a short time’ ‘I wish I had known this five years ago’ ‘This has helped me look after my father much better’ “I feel so much more confident about making decision now – this has been really helpful.“It is great to hear other carers and know that you are not on your own” If you think you or your family could benefit from joining us, please call Radford Care Group for details and dates on 0115 978 6133 or email info@radfordcaregroup.org.uk. You would be most welcome to join us. There is a also brochure about our friendship group (NOTE: our group is also for people over 50, who don’t have dementia, but may be are on their own, don’t see anyone, lonely and seek companionship, (for those on their own and can’t get here we may be able to help with transport too, please contact us for more details).

Holistic Health : This month: Meditation So what is Meditation and why is it important ? Meditation is the process of entering a state of consciousness, one in which you become completely absorbed in contemplation and heightened concentration. The goal being to fully relax the body and quiet the mind, so that the renewal and healing of self can occur. When regularly practised it can have a truly profound effect on both mental and emotional wellbeing, enhancing self awareness and promoting personal growth. In addition it can help improve and maintain physical health, improve concentration, awareness and memory, as well as decreasing stress and promoting calm and tranquillity. There are many different forms of meditation that can be applied to many different needs. Below are two popular ones for every day living: Revitalizing Meditation: In many spiritual traditions, the use of water in a ritual is more than symbolic. The exercise is intended to replicate the effect of ritual cleansing using imagery alone, so that it can be practised at anytime, anywhere. Here you would begin by focusing on your breath and when you have quietened the mind, imagine a place of tranquillity and beauty, maybe a forest setting, with warm sunlight beaming down on you. You tune in to the sights andsounds in your vision and imagine a wonderful waterfall. You are alone and at one with nature. You dip your toes into the cool water and feel the revitalizing power of nature soak into the soles of your feet and envelop every cell of your being. The problems of the everyday world are washed away instantly, along with any aches and pains, worries or stresses. The further you step into the waterfall the more refreshed you become, feeling the water wash over your face and neck and cleansing every part of you. Reviving you. Relax here for as long as you like and enjoy the cool invigorating waters, until you are ready to return the way you came.

Basic Relaxation Meditation: This is great for anyone who feels the need to find calm and distress. It is also great for beginners. Just sit comfortably, in an upright position, with your back straight, head up and body relaxed. Close your eyes and completely concentrate on your breathing. Start by taking slow, deep breaths, feeling the rise and fall of your abdomen, not your chest. The longer you focus on your breath, the deeper and steadier you will be able to breathe, achieving a deep sense of relaxation for the whole body and mind. Focus on a word or sound, such as love, peace, gentle bird song, or very calm music. Whenever your attention wanders, just gently return it to the focus word or sound and to your breathing. After 10 to 15 minutes, stop, open your eyes and gently stretch. Go slowly at first as you will be far more relaxed than you realise. Practising this regularly you will find you can reach a state of calm and relaxation in a very short space of time and feel stronger to deal with life around you. Meditation is found in many forms of progressive relaxation, yoga, tai chi and more, but whatever form they take, relaxation and meditation techniques have long proved their power. One finding by a Harvard Researcher Dr Herbert Benson discovered that the profound calm induced by Transcendental meditation could reduce blood pressure as well as slow heart rate and breathing. Many of the stress relief benefits also help to increase immunity and combat such problems as depression and anxiety. All kinds of meditation can be done at home at any time with minimal preparation, so they are suitable for many health conditions. If you would like to start relaxing and feeling better with some basic meditation come and visit us at www.RocknRelax.com where we will be holding evening classes and lunch time drop in. JulieAnne, founder of Rock ‘N’ Relax, welcomes you to our creative and relaxation therapies and workshops. See JulieAnn’s ads on pages 40 & 41.

Book Review by Clare Lyons Eat Like a Man edited by Ryan D‛Agostino

Not wanting to be accused of sexism after reviewing Girls Are Best, this non-fiction title should balance the scales. It is ostensibly a cookery book, but in fact offers so much more and is an entertaining read for both genders. The book separates over 100 recipes into ‘meals’ with a chapter on Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Sides, Dessert and Drinks. It is an American book, so most of the contributing chefs are not household names; however a small bio gives some insight into their styles and expertise. It is heavily dominated by meat, so not for everyone, but what makes the book a good gift or general read are the articles dotted throughout. We particularly enjoyed How to Forage Like a Man, The Coffee Matrix, Things a Man Should Know About Wines & Spirits. On a more serious front there are some really great recipes in the book, a couple of interesting articles by famous chefs and a good grounding in the ‘basics’ e.g. how to sauté. Each recipe has a difficulty rating (you can also search by difficulty in the index), very clear instructions as well as beautiful photography. They cover a range of simple items like garlic bread, classic American dishes and some more ‘exotic’ fare but it’s the whole package that makes it worth the price.

Children’s Choice Hector and the Big Bad Knight by Alex T Smith It’s quite nice to come across a book that challenges some of

the traditional roles, so a naughty knight was quite refreshing (and gave wolves a bit of a break). The book has great illustrations which add lots of information to the story allowing non-readers to enjoy it and take part fully. The main thrust of the story is that the smallest, weediest person is actually the bravest and cleverest – and that is a lesson that most children are encouraged by. Ideas about planning ahead and creative thinking are also in there, so lots of food for thought, as well as a bit of poo which always proves hilarious… Alex T. Smith is most well-known for Ella a ladybird version of Cinderella, but all of their offerings are lovely, Home and My Mum Has X-Ray Vision especially.

RECIPE

Butter Chicken Curry This is a quick recipe, but gives the impression of being complicated because of the lovely, rich flavours. Serves 2. INGREDIENTS 2 tsp ground ginger 2 tsp chilli powder 2 tsp cumin seeds 1 clove of garlic 2 tsp ground cardamom 1 tbsp garam masala powder 2 tbsp tomato paste 4 tbsp natural yogurt Dash of double cream 2 diced chicken breasts 30g salted butter 2 tbsp oil 2 finely chopped onions A few bay leaves

METHOD Mix the garlic and all the spices, other than the bay leaves, together in a bowl and add the tomato paste, yogurt and cream. (If there is no cream in the fridge a teaspoon of cornflour will do the same job). Add the chicken to the spice mixture, making sure it is coated thoroughly. In a high sided frying pan or medium sized saucepan on medium heat melt the butter and add the oil and finely chopped onions. Fry the chicken in the same pan and once it is lightly browned, scrape the rest of the spice mixture into the pan and add the bay leaves and enough water to bring together all the ingredients into a sauce. Mix well until smooth and serve with rice. This article was downloaded from http://www.freefeatures.com.

A recruitment drive is being launched by the Erewash Valley Cycling Club to boost numbers. Though membership has steadily increased during the past two years even more new riders of all ages and abilities are being sought for the club’s Sunday and Wednesday runs. “Now the better weather is coming it is time to get those bikes out of the shed and saddle up,” says Malcolm Griffin, the club’s organising secretary. “ Our twice weekly leisure rides around the local countryside are designed to encourage novice and experienced to enjoy cycling in good company.” Sunday rides are split into two for riders of all abilities, with a choice of shorter or longer rides, using cycle tracks, canal tow paths and quiet country lanes whenever possible. Though Wednesday rides are aimed at retired people everyone is welcome. Details can be had from Malcolm on (0115) 939 7060 or e.mail malcolmgriffin@talktalk.net. TRAVEL St-Malo in a snapshot Whereas most port towns are rough-and-ready places of industry, stepping off the ferry in St-Malo immediately plants you in a wonderfully historic and remarkably well-preserved place that deserves a trip in its own right. Hence the reason why we decided to book for le petit voyage from Portsmouth. Realistically most people come for one of two things, or both: the stunning Brittany countryside and coast beyond St-Malo itself, and/or the contents of the town's ancient citadelle , or walled old town. A real marvel, although the original ramparts were destroyed during World War II bombing campaigns, parts can be dated back to the 12th Century, creating an age-spanning periphery that gives some idea as to what life has been like here for generations, with work originally completed some 300 years ago, before further expansions took place in the eras that followed. This military monolith provides some wonderful walking routes, with views out to sea and over the beautiful town centre, not to mention a good opportunity for new visitors to get their bearings. Meanwhile, descending down into the cobbled streets reveals at least a day's worth of exploration 64

and window shopping. Antiques, books and crafts are all in abundance, and when a respite is needed, you won't be stuck for places to get a drink - whether that's a coffee or something a little stronger. Notable for more than the exhibitions, the House of Poets and Writers on Rue du Pelicot is well worth a look whilst in the area. Only a few wood-fronted buildings remain in St-Malo's citadelle , and this one dates back to 1676. Inside you'll find all manner of literary activities, many of which are open to the public, including walks, poetry translations and other workshops, providing an interesting insight into the regional and national written tradition that should appeal to any foreign fan of storytelling.

TRAVEL

According to rumour, the town centre is home to one of the highest concentrations of restaurants in Europe, so take your pick depending on what gets the tastebuds flowing (seafood being a notable speciality).

Amazingly, construction began on Saint-Malo Roman Catholic Cathedral, or the Cathedral of Saint-Vincent de Saint-Malo, some 900 years ago, and although the spire was added in the 19th Century, the sense of the place standing here for nighon eternity is tangible, and it also www.freefeatures.com. demands a look for the stunning details inside and out, along with the showpiece rose window. You’ll find Musee du Chateau close by too, housed in the Chateau de St-Malo, originally built by the Dukes of Brittany, it’s a great way to learn about the city’s history and take in a real-life castle. All of which just leaves food, which is hardly a problem.

IN THE COMMUNITY Hi everyone, I hope this year has been ok for you so far. There a lot of good things happening in Stapleford at the moment. So as a Councillor I will try and tell you what I know. Iceland will be opening in August. The Stapleford Community group is in contact with them to find out when they are interviewing for a number of vacancies, we hope they will be interested in a lot of the local unemployed. Next to Iceland will be a new pub, details to follow. The Jaguar pub has been demolished and a Co-op store will be built. More local jobs? There is also a market open every Tuesday on Walter Parker Square, with a variety of stalls and local produce. Please support. There are, also CSCS courses for the unemployed at the Meeting Place next to the Horse and Jockey, this entitles people to have a foot way into building construction and learn the many skills needed, to enquire about courses in the future please contact the Stapleford community group who help to organise it or the ladies at the Meeting Place, there are also many more ventures so feel free to go and see what is on offer. There are still things that need addressing in our Town. The zebra crossing on Derby road are a disgrace and so are the bumps throughout Stapleford, something needs to be done about the situation. The parking outside Lloyds Bank, Manor Chip Shop, all the streets off Brookhill, Halls Road and many other spots, please contact Mike Barnett at Notts County Council and tell him about your concerns.

66

The people that come from outside of Stapleford and park around the Halls Road area, I hope that they can remember that there is a children’s school there and it’s only £1 to park all day, is it worth inconveniencing people for so little money? You will all notice that Hickings Lane Park has been improved with footpaths and gym apparatus around the field area. Pasture Road and Ilkeston Road have also been earmarked for these improvements. From August 2nd a group will hold commemorations of 100 years since the start of the first world war. It’ll both be a sombre and historic event with many local artists, people and activities going off, more details to follow. If you would like to take part in this historic event you can contact Richard McRay, Amanda Hull and myself. We are also looking to clear up the area of land between Sandiacre Road and the Erewash canal. On a sporting note the Old Cross ladies darts team won the league and cup double plus another cup. Well done to Jean and the girls. Stapleford Town football club is top of the Saturday league. Any football, darts and pool, men or women who would like to join these successful teams feel free to contact The Old Cross. The dominoes team are quite good too. Finally The Cross has had a re-furb, local acts, karaoke and much more will be taking place. Also there is room for anyone wanting parties, meetings etc come in the Cross and speak to the friendly staff. Yours Cllr John McGrath (Maggie).

IN THE COMMUNITY EZ NORDIC WALKING REALLY IS EASY!

Looking for a full body workout that anyone can do? Broxtowe residents can look no further than Broxtowe Borough Council’s new inclusive Nordic Walking sessions. The Council’s sport development team, Broxtowe Sport have teamed up with local Nordic Walking instructor Catherine Hughes to deliver the sessions at Kimberley Leisure Centre every Saturday until the end of September between 2.30pm and 3.30pm. The sessions are at a steadier pace than traditional Nordic Walking, with clearer instructions making them more accessible to those with learning disabilities and mobility issues. Jill Carter, who attends with her daughter Jessie who has learning disabilities said: “We are really enjoying Nordic Walking. I've tried mainstream sessions myself and just haven't managed to get the co-ordination right, so it's great to be able to take it slowly and break it down as well as be among such an encouraging and supportive group.” Another mum, Dawn Pillar also attends with her daughter Eleanor who she says is “walking further than I have known her to in a long time thanks to the sessions.” Nordic Walking is a special technique using two poles which means you can strengthen and tone both the lower and upper body whilst walking.

It can burn up to 46% more calories compared to ordinary walking and can reach the same intensity as running but without the impact. It is becoming a fast growing recreational fitness sport in Nottinghamshire thanks to a handful of passionate instructors. The sport dates back to the 1930s as an off season training method for competitive cross-country skiers. Sessions are suitable for young people aged 16 and their families or carers. Each session costs just £3.00. Broxtowe Borough Council's sports development team, Broxtowe Sport, work with a variety of different partners including residents, sports people, coaches, volunteers and clubs to improve the quality and range of sports provision in Broxtowe Borough.

LEFT TO RIGHT: Dawn Pillar, Peter Kay, Jessie Carter-Kay, Eleanor Pillar, Rachel Davis (instructor) and Nicola Cousins.

IN THE COMMUNITY Trent to Trenches - exhibition at Nottingham Castle The People of Nottinghamshire and the Great War, 1914-1918 A major exhibition to mark one hundred years since the outbreak of the Great War exploring the experiences of the people of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire at home and in the trenches. Trent to Trenches shell filling The exhibition will be held at Nottingham Castle from 26th July to 16th November 2014. Using powerful visual images, diaries, letters and artefacts, many on loan from members of the public, the exhibition highlights how the conflict of the Great War (1914-1918) was a catalyst for huge social and economic change in the communities of Nottinghamshire. Much of the research for the exhibition has been carried out by ten volunteer groups from across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire which has generated content for this exciting and innovative exhibition.

St Helens Church Bells in Stapleford The sound of church bells is deeply rooted in our British Culture, they call us to pray, to work to arms and in times of crisis come together, the bells are the sound of freedom and peace. In WW11 they were silent until they could ring to announce peace. The bells at St Helens Church along with church bells across the country will be ringing out during the next four years to commemorate the start and the end of the First World War, and many significant milestones in between, such a The Battle of the Somme, Gallipoli, and Passchendale. So if you hear them, pause and reflect as the family of Stapleford and other communities remember their loved ones and family members who fell. 70
