Spring Cleaning: Getting the Spring back in your home. At this time of year, many of you may be thinking about Spring Cleaning. But is it something you never really get round to? Let's face it, you probably already spend a large proportion of your week taking care of your home, do you really want to add even more work to that never ending list? Some jobs in the home are really just TOO BIG, and in order to get them done properly you need to enlist the help of a professional. That's where Breedon Carpet Care can help. Deep cleaning carpets is not particularly straight forward, even if you own or hire a machine, it is very easy to make costly mistakes. So if your carpet is looking decidedly grubby after the winter and you want to get it clean again, it's a good idea to call Breedon Carpet Care. Here at Breedon Carpet Care, we've been cleaning carpets and soft furnishings for over 15 years. We’re not general cleaners who occasionally clean carpets, or worse, subcontract carpet cleaning to a third party. A large percentage of our work comes from people we've cleaned for before or their friends/family on recommendation. Don't think that because the carpet is being cleaned that you have to empty all of the furniture out. WE move furniture. Items such as the suite and dining table we can move around in the room. You don't need to completely empty your room. All we ask is you move the lighter items such as toys and lamps, small tables etc. We'll move the rest, ... for further information, please contact Chris at Breedon Carpet Care see advert below

“ You Get The Most Thorough Clean Ever Seen Or It’s Free”! That’s right, the most thorough cleaning ever. My carpet and upholstery cleaning is the best and most thorough you could ever have – if you don’t agree I won’t accept your payment.

Along with the purchase of your home and family car, your soft furnishings are one of the largest investments you will make. Professional cleaning of your furnishings on a regular basis will extend their life considerably as well as keeping them hygienic and looking good.

4 Reasons Why You Should Choose My Company To Clean & Protect Your Family’s Health 1. Thorough Cleaning – My method doesn’t leave any residue or cause shrinkage. It cleans down to the base of your carpet removing harmful bacteria leaving your carpet clean and healthy.

2. Honest Pricing – I promise no high-pressure sales gimmicks. The prices I quote you are fully inclusive of cleaning products and labour. A full complete clean AND no hidden extras.

3. Protection of your soft Furnishings - Your valuable soft furnishings will stay cleaner longer, vacuum easier and have improved stain resistance with our carpet and upholstery protectors.

4. Long Standing Reputation – My company enjoys a reputation which is second to none, many of our customers not only come back to us time and again but recommend us to their family and friends.

Local teen Emma Snow writes about various topics and events each month in the Grapevine. “A voice for the young people in our Community”.

Are you a slave to fashion? With the summer months just around the corner, new styles are slowly creeping into our high street stores. Diverse clothing is widely available, whether this be online or in a clothing store. Fashion is exciting. Throughout the past decades, there have been iconic moments and styles which have inspired fashion today. But there’s no denying it can be difficult to keep on top of the latest trends. Those who know me well say that I am a keen follower of trending styles. The different textures, fabrics and colours add diversity to my wardrobe. But do we live in a throwaway society? For teenagers and young adults especially, we will wear our clothes for a season and then either forget about that particular item and push it to the back of our wardrobe, or throw it away. British consumers spend on average £700 on fashion per year, which is slightly above the EU average of £550. Is this figure surprising? No. Many of us

18

British consumers will happily pay the price to be considered ‘cool’ or ‘trendy’. The consequences? We throw away our clothes, and this has a significant impact on our environment. This contributes to landfill sites becoming increasingly full, taking up valuable space which could be used for recreational purposes or housing, due to most fabrics taking years to degrade. Every year, 350,000 tonnes of used but still wearable clothing goes to landfill sites in the UK, worth £140 million. What can we do? Instead of throwing our clothes away, we should donate them to charity shops or use clothing banks. Unfortunately, 41% of people say they are not aware of recycling facilities for textiles. We should encourage people to give their unwanted clothing to fantastic charities such as MIND, Cancer Research UK and The British Heart Foundation, which are just a few of the charities who allow for clothing donations, all of which can be found in the local area. More than 60% of householders in the UK say they have unwanted clothes and textiles stored in their homes. If we donate to charities, we can help preserve our environment whilst also supporting medical research or clothing the homeless, depending on the charity. You might find a bargain or a vintage piece whilst browsing your local charity shop!

Remember to be adventurous and maintain your own individual identity, having your personal take on the latest trends. Having said that, I still challenge you to head over to your wardrobe and pick out 3 items you haven’t worn in a while, and be sure to donate them to a charity of your choice. Don’t become a part of the throwaway society. Article by Emma Snow.

On top of this, you can build around staple items with fabrics and patterns which are trending at the moment. Be careful not to choose items you will look back on in photos and think, why on earth did I ever choose to wear that? Let’s be honest, we have all done it! So, are you a slave to fashion? As a consumer, do you wear the latest trends just because everyone else is? Even if you do, it is important to not become a ‘sheep’ and look exactly the same as all your friends.

Having timeless pieces in your wardrobe is key to saving your money and reducing the amount of clothing you throw in the bin, as well as staying fashionable year-in and year-out. For example, I depend on a pair of black fitted jeans which is just one of the building blocks to a perfect, timeless wardrobe. Items such as this can be dressed down for a day time look, or dressed up with accessories for a night time look.

Fresh Advice WHOLE OF MARKET MORTGAGE ADVICE HOW MUCH COULD YOU SAVE ON YOUR MORTGAGE?

In today's competitive mortgage market, many borrowers choose to switch their mortgage every few years in order to take advantage of the new rates on offer. Those that remain on the same deal for the full term of their loan could lose out on a range of potential benefits, not least the opportunity to reduce the total amount paid back, which could be a significant amount in some cases. In simple terms, remortgaging involves switching your current mortgage to a new deal, arranged either with your existing lender or with a new lender. If you're paying your lender's Standard Variable Rate (SVR), it's likely that you are able to secure a better rate on other available products. This could allow you to save money on your monthly repayments, or to repay your mortgage sooner. If you would like to discuss the potential saving available through remortgaging then call us today for your free initial mortgage consultation. Fresh Advice are also able to advise on and arrange the following products: • • • • •

SCHOOLCHILDREN TEST OUT NEW PLAY AREA IN ATTENBOROUGH OVER 40 SCHOOLCHILDREN were among the first to test out the newly refurbished play area at Long Lane Recreation Ground in Attenborough earlier this week as it was officially opened. From a new tree house made from sustainably sourced European hardwood, complete with platforms, climbing ropes, ramps, access net and a slide to trampolines, a bird’s nest swing and a range of other equipment for young children and toddlers, the children from Meadow Lane Infant School and Attenborough Church Pre-School enjoyed an hour playing in the sunshine with outgoing Mayor of Broxtowe 2015/16, Councillor Susan Bagshaw. The area has a mixture of bark and rubber surfacing and is enclosed by a dog proof fence with self-closing gates. The previous play area was over 20 years old and after local people contacted Broxtowe Borough Council to see if improvements could be made, a partnership between the Council and Groundwork Greater Nottingham saw £50,000 of funding secured from Waste Recycling Limited (WREN) to refurbish the play area. The Council contributed an additional £20,000. Children from the schools were consulted during the early design stages to ensure a facility was created that catered for the needs of local young people. Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council, Councillor Richard Jackson said: “Fantastic play facilities help children enjoy the great outdoors and their leisure time with their friends and families, as well as giving them chance to run around and keep active”. The Council is incredibly proud of the work that has been completed at Long Lane and the project showcases the great work of our

30

partnerships with other organisations like WREN and Groundwork.” Jo Bradley-Fortune, Executive Director at Groundwork Greater Nottingham said: “We have worked with the community and other stakeholders to create a fantastic treasured park which will be cared for and loved by the whole community”. Cheryl Raynor, WREN’s grant manager for Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, said: “It was a delight to see the children enjoying the play area during the opening celebrations and we are pleased that our funding has made a positive impact locally. WREN is always happy to consider grant applications for projects that make a difference to local communities and the partnership between the Council and Groundwork Greater Nottingham helped to bring this to fruition.”

WREN is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community, conservation and heritage projects from funds donated by waste and resource management company FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund. For more information about WREN funding contact Cheryl Raynor on 01623 755319, at cheryl.raynor@wren.org.uk or visit http://www.wren.org.uk/

Eye Lens Regneration from Own Stem Cells A Paradigm Shift in Cataract Surgery. A new study describes a pioneering new cataract treatment – tested in animals and in a small trial with human patients – where the cloudy lens in removed. The eye grows a new lens from its own stem cells.

Our view. Although further research is needing to see the effectively of this technique in adults "We believe this new approach will result in a paradigm shift in cataract surgery and may offer patients a safer and better treatment option in the future." Current cataract treatment is generally very successful in adults – Cataract surgery is available under the NHS however the benefit of advanced correction of astigmatism, early cataract and varifocal implants can be done privately. If you have cataracts or are concerned that you may have cataracts , we advise you consult your specialist optometrist. Eye Sight is precious - Look after them

Current approaches to cataract surgery remove the eye's lens generating stem cells along with the faulty lens. In 12 infants born with cataracts, researchers used a minimally invasive approach to remove the eye's damaged lens -- while keeping the native stem cells intact. Stem cells are primitive cells that give rise to different types of mature tissue.

Article by K.Lakhani Bsc MCoptom Dip Tp IP Specialist Optometrist Jaysons Opticians

The patients treated with the new approach had fewer complications and healed faster than the group treated with the standard approach. After 3 months, all the operated eyes had regrown a new lens curved on both sides (biconvex).

It’s a Mega Mayfest! Local girls take part in the biggest festival of the year

Notts’ biggest girls-only festival of the year was staged by Girlguiding Nottinghamshire on Saturday 7 May. The 900+ festival-goers who gathered for ‘Mega Mayfest’ at Newark Showground included members of Rainbows (aged 5-7), Brownies (710), Guides (10-14), Rangers, Young Leaders and Senior Section (14-25) plus adult leaders and volunteer helpers from all over the county. Joining in the fun were members of 3rd Attenborough Guides. ‘I really enjoy camping and thought this event was amazing,’ said Gracie Raynor (13). ‘It was a great chance to meet new people and make new friends. We also got to see just how many Guides there are in Nottingham - I didn't realise this many people did Guides! I've really enjoyed holding all the animals, especially the lizard!’ Sophie Litherland (12) agreed. ‘Being in Guides is the best adventure. You get to go to places you'd never normally go to, get to meet lots of new people and do trips like this that you don't get to do in school. I've really enjoyed doing the crafts today and having fun with my Guiding friends.’

featured sets by four-piece rock band Desensitised, singer/songwriter Joseph Knight and party band Hype. Other activities included trampolines, crafts, inflatables, drumming, glitter tattoos, magicians, a photo-booth and festival food, plus a special animal enclosure run by White Post Farm. Mega Mayfest was the last official event for Girlguiding Nottinghamshire’s outgoing County Commissioner Kate Royse. ‘What a mega day!’ she reflected. ‘After five fabulous years as County Commissioner for Girlguiding Nottinghamshire, I can’t think of a better way to say thank you to all the girls across Notts who have helped make my job so rewarding – and such fun!’ Girlguiding Nottinghamshire is the largest girls-only organisation in the county and has over 9,000 members supported by some 2,000 adult leaders and helpers. Enquiries about volunteering and working with Girlguiding Nottinghamshire are always welcome: explore www. girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk to find out more.

The Royal Voluntary Service Sheds Grant Fund The Royal Voluntary Service have launched a Sheds Grant Fund – aimed at recently new and just forming Sheds to support local communities to create their own community spaces to craft, grow and build. Sheds are community workshop spaces where people can come together to take part in practical skills and activities. They are designed and run by their members and provide opportunities for people to share tools, resources and skills in order to create, learn and develop social networks. Grants of between £250 and £1,000 are available from the Sheds Grant Fund– with applicants encouraged to apply for some of the tools and equipment they need for their activities or ongoing costs such as help with their rent or insurance. All applications need to come from constituted community groups and must be submitted by the deadline of Sunday 3rd July to be considered. For further details see our ad on opposite page. The Shed movement follows a blueprint from an Australian project and since the first Men’s Shed opened in the UK 6 years ago, there are now over 300 in the UK with three new Sheds on average opening a week. Sheds are often places for older men to come together and work on either individual or community projects – but are now increasingly seeing younger men and women getting involved and benefitting from the social interaction and skill sharing that are at their heart. The Fund is being supported by each of the National Sheds Associations across the regions.

NEW PENSION FREEDOMS – EVERYONE SHOULD BE TAKING STEPS NOW New flexibility means anyone over 55 can take all their savings in cash, either all at once or as and when they need it.We need to raise awareness of what is likely to be a growing problem as hundreds of thousands of 55 plus savers gain access to pension lump sums. Also, the Flat Rate State Pension comes into operation in April 2016 and full details will be explained during the courses. We are a partner with the Pensions Service (Department for Work and Pensions) and any new legislation will be explained in full during the courses. We aim to keep the courses very friendly and informal with an emphasis on the psychological approach to retirement and how to occupy the extra hours of leisure people will experience in retirement. Many people sleep-walk into retirement and spend more time planning a fortnight’s holiday than their retirement which could last a good 30 odd years or so. If ever the nation needed a wake-up call, then this is it.During the course, each delegate will be able to have a 1:1 with the speakers and also full updates will be given in relation to all the new regulations, together with calculations on the date men and women will receive their State Pension. A 3 course buffet lunch will be provided, plus tea/coffee/biscuits on arrival and during the morning and afternoon breaks. A full pack of information, leaflets, booklets and magazines/newspapers will be provided to take home and refer to after retirement and hand-outs will be provided by each speaker. The Beeston Office is open for anyone to visit as a Resource Centre and for further help after retirement. Places will need to be booked in advance as a charge will be made to cover lunches and admin. costs. Telephone NDPRC on 0115 922 3824, mobile 07790 851 584 or visit the website to book a place on line www.ndprc.org.uk Next courses take place on 21-23 March, 18-20 April, then monthly thereafter.

Book Review by Clare Lyons Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom This has become a bit of a classic, and Albom has written a number of other ‘feel good’, inspirational type books. Tuesdays with Morrie is a series of meetings between a student and their mentor many years after their first meeting. Sadly Morrie is very ill and Albom begins regular visits initially to offer support but in reality to learn important lessons about life. The book does have a cheesy element to it, but it is nevertheless very moving in parts and a pleasant read. For some it will be very inspirational and may lead to some serious life changes or at least a review of current habits and plans. The book is beautifully and sensitively written, Albom has a great sense of purpose and it’s well worth a exploring. It’s a short book so don’t take it on holiday as you may finish it before you get anywhere! If you like Albom’s style you may also enjoy The Five People You Meet in Heaven or The Time Keeper.

Children’s Choice Loud Daniel O‛Dowd from the Ever So… Series

This series of books are short life lessons for children on personality traits. There are five books in the series, but this is our favourite. Daniel O’Dowd is so incredibly loud all the time and it gets him into trouble, especially at school. However, one day his gift is required to help save the world… but he has to remember to be quiet too – so he can get back home safely. The story is fun and silly, but a very welcome opportunity to discuss when it’s ok to be loud, and when we need to listen! Fun illustrations mean this will be universally popular. www.mrsaverageevaluates.wordpress.com

Talks will begin again in September. However, members have a variety of excursions, walks and holidays to keep them busy during the summer: Excursions to look forward to include a visit to Eyam Hall (NT) and the Cascades Garden, on Wed. July 13th. Yorkgate Garden and East Riddlesden Hall – Mon. August 15th. And on Thursday, June 23rd, a visit to The Wimpole Estate, Cambridgeshire. Building of the Hall began in 1640 and it became the largest house in the county. It was bought in 1938 by George and Elsie Bainbridge Elsie was the daughter of Rudyard Kipling (the writer, not the cake maker).

The Local and Family History Group visits include the National Civil War Centre in Newark, June 28th, Flintham Museum, with guided walk, August 1st and Nottingham Civic Society Heritage Walk on September 1st. A highlight of the Garden Group's activities will be a visit to the garden of Stuart Dixon, of Radio Nottingham on Friday, 15th July. In addition two holidays are planned, one to Cardiff and South Wales in June, and one to Scarborough and North Yorkshire in September. So – there is something for everyone, but the holidays and excursions get booked up fast so don't delay. New members are always welcome to join this friendly organisation which supports the work of the National Trust. (2nd photo). One lucky guest also took home a Paul Smith handbag worth £500 after beating other bidders in a charity auction. The bag was just one of a host of fantastic prizes which were generously donated by local businesses and individuals. Councillor Bagshaw has been fundraising for the two charities during her year in office with a final total to be announced in the next few weeks. For more information contact the Broxtowe Borough Council 0115 917 3210, email civic@broxtowe.gov.uk or visit www.broxtowe.gov.uk/imagegallery to enjoy a special image gallery of the event.

THANK YOU TEA FOR MAYOR’S CHARITY FUNDRAISERS AN AFTERNOON TEA was held at the Town Hall in Beeston, to thank the Mayor’s Charity and Fundraising Committee for their efforts in helping raise over £6,000 for two deserving charities. Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Susan Bagshaw welcomed the group into the Mayor’s Parlour, to join her for tea and cake as a thank you for their help and support in raising money for Forces in the Community and Nottingham Children’s Hospital. Cheques were presented to representatives from both charities with some final funds to be added in the coming weeks. Councillor Bagshaw said: “I wouldn’t have been able to raise this money without the support of my charity committee and I have been humbled by the work they have done. This money will make a big difference to the local people that the two charities help each day and everyone who has supported us this year should be very proud of themselves.”

A variety of fundraising events took place during Susan’s year in office, including a Fashion Show, Cake Sale, Golf Day, A Badger Run and a Tea Dance, culminating in the St. George’s Day Charity Ball on 23rd April. The committee was made up of friends, Councillors and Freemen of the Borough who each played their own part in helping the Mayor throughout her civic year. Message from Stapleford Councillor John McGrath Hi everyone, hope you are all looking forward to the summer and all the good things that are happening around the area. Hemlock happening 11th June, Stapleford Carnival September, Aldi starting up and the redevelopment of the centre of Stapleford. We are speaking to the Council where we will endeavour to get the planters sorted and the hanging baskets back. Also myself Ray and Richard will be handing in a petition concerning the awful state of Derby Road, from Chequers to the Midland. It’s a disgrace, myself and many other Councillors think that Mr. Greaves should come and have a look at the state of our town. Mr. Greaves is the portfolio holder for Transport at Notts County Council. The last time he came to see us was 3 years ago, I wonder why? We are still unhappy with the cash office situation, where a number of Councillors, who the people of Stapleford voted for, still voted to close them. I find this hard to believe, but I promise you myself, Ray and Richard will carry on fighting. Congratulations to Her Majesty the Queen on her 90th birthday, the Old Cross was privileged to light a beacon to commemorate this. Thanks to the Mayor of Broxtowe and Stapleford for attending. Also Tracy Basra and her girls for doing all the cooking. A special mention to Sharon Hands and Tracy again in all their efforts to raise money for Mark Cliff and his daughter who has leukaemia, also to Larry's and the Chequers and all others who donated. Well done Pete Scott and Stapleford Town FC for a much improved season. I'm sure Pete and all his team will put Stapleford on the map. Let us hope that at both football, the Euros and the Olympics all the home nations do well. By the way, well done to the people that helped with the magnificent Walter Parker monument, Cllr Grindell and gang deserve a round of applause. Lastly, on a political note I hope we stay in Europe and that Paddy Tipping is re-elected as Police Commissioner. Have a good summer! Regards, Councillor John McGrath - (Maggie).

Bromley House Library, Angel Row, Nottingham Celebrating 200 years - 1816 - 2016 On the 2nd April 1816 at a general meeting at Thurland Hall, the home of Dr John Storer (the first physician at the General Hospital and the Library’s first President) the Nottingham Subscription Library started. We have operated continuously since then, first in Carlton Street and from 1822 in Bromley House. So 2016 is our year of celebration. We have planned a very ambitious programme of talks, events and gallery exhibitions throughout the year so that as many people as possible can join in. All our talks are open to the public and booking details can be found in our programme. file:///C:/Users/Geraldine/Downloads/2016%20 Programme%20(2).pdfn You can also call into the library to pick up a programme or visit the Nottingham Tourist Information Centre. But please note that all our events are proving very popular so do book as early as you can to avoid disappointment. We are well into our year of celebration and enjoyed a super birthday party on April 2nd 2016 with cake and authentic regency costumes made by our multitalented Librarian Carol Barstow.

We are holding a Family Fun Day on Saturday 13th August; for a small charge you will be able to enjoy a day of art and paper crafts, storytelling, photography with Pringle’s tubes, face painting, teddy bear’s picnic, cordials and cake and much more. Booking is essential and tickets go on sale in June. Notable speakers in the autumn are Tom Huggan, Chair of Green’s Windmill Trust, Duncan Hamilton, twice winner of the William Hill Sports Book of the Year award and

Polly Russell, co-presenter of the BBC’s ‘Back in time for Dinner’ During October and November, we also have a series of exhibitions and talks celebrating the 175th anniversary of the opening of the attics at Bromley House as the 1st photographic studio in the East Midlands. As part of our celebrations we are offering guided tours of the library every Wednesday afternoon at 2.30 pm and 4.00 pm. The tours are free and will last about an hour. Booking is essential as spaces are limited. If you cannot make the Wednesday afternoon talks, we are also open on Heritage Open Day Saturday 10th September – where you can take a self-guided tour of the library and beautiful walled garden. There will be displays of both artwork and books from our special collections. We can offer morning or afternoon group visits for a small fee; these do need to be arranged well in advance. Please note that Bromley House Library is situated on the first floor and above of a Grade II* listed building and presently has no lift. Both first floor and the upper floors are accessed by stairs. We are happy to arrange an advance visit by group leaders to assess access to the building. For booking or any other enquiries please phone 0115 9473134 or email: enquiries@bromleyhouse.org or check out the website www.bromleyhouse.org We can also be found: Bromley House Library, Angel Row, Nottingham, NG1 7NH

Assistive Technology - devices to help with everyday living

Technology can give people with dementia help and support to remain independent, safe and socially involved. Carers may find it offers them support and reassurance as well.
