Grapevine Gardening Who said you can’t garden in winter? , garden enthusiasts don’t just give up their hobby when the cold weather arrives, so here’s a few things to be getting on with...There are some flower seeds you could still sow, and you may be rewarded with early blooms. Less daylight hours can make it tricky to provide enough light for your seedlings, so sow and grow in a bright spot without too much direct sunlight, which can damage seedlings. Most seeds sown indoors over winter will benefit from the warmth of a heated propagator or warm windowsill, so provide this where possible. Sweet peas can be sown indoors in December, ideally in containers, such as cardboard tubes, that later can be planted out in the soil, minimising root disturbance. Snapdragons are usually grown as annuals or biennials, but they’re actually shortlived perennials. They’re easy to grow, and can be sown under glass in December, to flower from June onwards. Pelargoniums are often propagated by taking cuttings, but why not try growing them from seed, too? Ideally, surface sow in a heated propagator, in a bright spot out of direct sunlight.

December Tips Protect terracotta pots from cracking in freezing weather by bringing them indoors or wrapping in bubble polythene Rake up fallen leaves in borders that could be harbouring slugs and other pests Plant bare-root roses and other deciduous shrubs, plus ornamental trees Hang bird feeders near roses to attract hungry birds that will also pick off any overwintering pests. Cut stems of berried winter shrubs, seasonal flowers and evergreen leaves for festive decorations for the home To advertise call 07854 990608 or visit our website www.beechpublications.co.uk GRAPEVINE-NG9 DECEMBER copy final one to print MAIN 122016.indd 5

Local teen Emma Snow writes about various topics and events each month in the Grapevine. “A voice for the young people in our Community”. Do you have a false identity? I can admit to having a false identity. It doesn’t mean I’m a liar and it doesn’t mean I’m fake. I’m talking about having an identity online that isn’t a true representation of what my life is really like and you may be able to relate to this. More often than not, some people use social media to hide who they really are, coming across as a completely different person on the internet than in real life. Hiding behind a screen can be malicious but at the same time it can give people confidence. This is why it is so easy to create a false identity and why social media can be so dangerous. We can easily edit and manipulate our accounts to create a ‘better version’ of ourselves to increase the feeling of self-worth, reflected by the number of ‘likes’ and followers we can attain. Have we really become this shallow without actually realising it?So many of us find it difficult to understand 18

that people we follow on Instagram and Twitter do not lead ‘perfect’ lives. Understandably, we are all guilty of choosing specific areas of our lives to showcase on the internet. We want to be judged for the life people think we lead; the lives we portray online. The person you have on Facebook who is constantly having successes in their lives will most certainly be having failures too. It is just that they choose to share the positive aspects. The celebrity or YouTuber that has the ‘perfect’ family probably has sleepless nights when their new-born baby is crying, but they just don’t share this part of their lives on the internet. Society has created this ideology of perfection. One person’s level of perfection will be different to the next, but social media is distorting how we view ourselves. I often hear people around me comparing their lives to the celebrity world. Whilst they are sitting in school, college or at work completing everyday tasks, they are at the same time wishing that they had the glamorous life of the Youtuber or TV presenter they watch, or the popstar they sing along to in the morning.

The truth is they are working just as hard as you are and coming up against similar problems, it’s just that you only see what they want you to see. You don’t see the hours they spend cultivating their celebrity image. They may appear to have a glamorous lifestyle but in all likelihood, they don’t.It is so easy to get drawn into following fitness bloggers and vloggers and wanting to look and be like them. For example, the toned stomach, ‘perfect’. Article by Emma Snow You can now read more from me on my new blog: https://emmsnow.blogspot. co.uk

CHRISTMAS TREE FINDS A NEW HOME IN EASTWOOD TOWN CENTRE A CHRISTMAS TREE from a property in Eastwood is providing some festive cheer in the town centre after Broxtowe Borough Council’s quick thinking Arboriculture Team found it a new home after it was felled. The tree, from the garden of one of Broxtowe Borough Council’s tenants at Addison Villas in Eastwood was removed as it was becoming entangled in phone lines above the properties. The Arboriculture Team decided that rather than recycle the tree for composting, they could donate it to be used as a Christmas Tree and the Craft Workshops in Eastwood was selected as the ideal location. The tree was felled on Friday 25th November and was installed within the Courtyard at the Craft Workshops earlier this week, with Christmas lights added just in time for the Eastwood Christmas Lights Switch On event on Tuesday 29th November. After the Christmas period the tree will be recycled into green waste for composting.

‘Ducks Away 2017‛ The 26th Annual Duck race will take place on Sunday 1st January 2017 at Manor Park Toton. Starting at 2.00pm. As usual the Mayor of Broxtowe, (To be confirmed) will start the race by releasing 1500 plastic ducks into the River Erewash. They will float down the river and be caught at the bridge approximately 600 yards down stream. The owners of the first 10 ducks to cross the winning line will receive a prize. In 2016 we included a ‘Corporate’ race. Local business supported the race by sponsoring a duck. This was very successful so we will be including a corporate race again in 2017 and will be contacting local business once again to ask for their support. The Duck race is always a fun day for all the family. We will be serving teas, coffees, mulled wine and mince pies and we will be playing festive music For just £1.50 people can have the opportunity to sponsor a duck and win a prize. Angela Barnes, Duck Race Co-ordinator said “The Duck Race has become a great local event and people start ringing as soon as Christmas is over to make sure that they can reserve a duck for the race. We usually attract hundreds of local people and many family pets. It is one of the few events that all of the family can enjoy together. And there is always a great atmosphere. The people in the Toton/Beeston/Long Eaton/Sandiacre, Stapleford, Nottingham and Derby area now attend as a matter of course. After all what else can you do on New Years day? The race is sponsored by Long Eaton Plant Hire and all of the prizes are donated by local business. All of the money raised will be donated to “Cancer Research UK.” Even before Christmas people start ringing to reserve themselves a duck ,and I am sure that 2017 will be no exception. To reserve a duck call Angela Barnes – 07973 753046

Shedding Light on Night Vision Problems It’s no surprise that most people don’t see well in the dark. However, some people have considerable difficulty seeing at night or in poor light. Night blindness is not a disease in itself, but instead is a symptom of some other type of vision problem. During low light conditions our eyes naturally function differently: we are basically colour blind ,seeing mostly black , white and grey; we have less detailed vision and we see moving objects better than stationary objects. Some of the eye conditions that can cause night vision difficulty include: Nearsightedness (seeing well up close but not far away) Glaucoma (a disease of the optic nerve connecting the eye to the brain) Medicine for glaucoma that constricts (narrows) the pupil Cataracts (cloudiness of the eye’s naturally clear lens) Diabetes (uncontrolled blood sugar levels) Retinitis pigmentosa (an eye disease that causes blindness) Too little Vitamin A Keratoconus (having a cornea that is very steeply curved) Our view. If you aren’t sure whether you have night vision problems, consider the following questions:

36

Do you find yourself having trouble moving around your house at night, even with small night lights? Is driving at night becoming more difficult? Do you avoid going outside at night for fear of tripping or have trouble recognizing people’s faces in darkened settings? Does it take you a long time to adjust to seeing anything in a darkened room? If you have any concerns about your ability to see in the dark or in dim light, consult with your specialist optometrist right away. Having a complete eye exam will help identify any condition affecting your vision. Treating night vision difficulties depends solely on its cause . Getting a new prescription for your eyeglasses may be all you need for better vision in low light. In some cases, having cataracts removed can be illuminating as far as your vision is concerned. Your optometrist can explain what is causing your night vision problem and suggest how to brighten your outlook Article by Mr K.Lakhani BSc MCOpTom DipT IP Specialist Optometrist Jaysons Opticians

Beeston Church Illuminated Visitors to Beeston will be welcomed by new stunning views of The Parish Church of St. John The Baptist thanks to new up-lighting which has been installed by Broxtowe Borough Council to show the church in all its glory. Church Uplighting The new energy efficient LED lighting has been installed to the upper elevations on all four sides of the church. Winter commuters passing the church will be able to enjoy the beautiful view on their travels.Father Wayne Plimmer, Vicar of the church said: “We are delighted that this external lighting has been so generously provided for the church. Following the completion of the tram and the opening up of the views of the church, the lights will highlight the building and emphasise its place in the community”.Both the colour and the frequency of colour change can be altered to suit particular celebratory events. The cost of the project was just over £20,000 and has been paid for by the developers of The Square Phase 1.

IN THE COMMUNITY Message from Cllr. John McGrath Hope you have had a good summer, and enjoyed the year. There has been some ups and downs in Stapleford, one was the death of young Josh, which was a terrible thing for any family to go through. The way the community of Stapleford and surrounding areas rallied round to help them through this traumatic time was fantastic and credit goes to young Oliver and his gang of school friends who organised raffles for a bench as a tribute to Josh. Also the bikers, who turned out for the funeral. It has been an eventful year, Aldi has still not been built. There is a new application going in in December without the condition of the 10 new homes. I hope the Councillors who sit on this committee can now see sense to pass the application as we no longer have a superstore in Stapleford. (As most are aware the Co-op closing, there are no greengrocers and it is my belief that this is a fantastic opportunity to help the town grow and prosper.) The Post Office is set to close on Church Street, it is set to move to Bargain Booze on Derby Road. Not ideal, small but this is the way the Post Office business plans are going for their shops. We had a meeting last year, myself, Richard and officers of the Council where we suggested other empty premises in the town. They came back with Bargain Booze, we have a meeting in early

46

November with our MP, Post Office officials to see what their plan is. I personally do not want to lose the Post Office in Stapleford. Whiteley Mill and new offices and apartments are now finished. A fantastic looking building bringing people into the town. Across the road is Cambridge House which again we are speaking to people to turn it into a training hub for building skills and other trades to give young people who are not so academically minded to give them a good start in life. Again I would like our MP and the leader of the Council to get involved with ideas with myself and Richard and officers of rhe council to push this forward and no hang around as we did with Whiteley Mill. The developments around the centre of Stapleford are now under way. The question was asked in council about the money we receive for this that we try and invest it in Stapleford and not into Beeston, as I feel that is where some of our monies go. Watch this space. Brookhill Street is still a major problem, why did it take an accident for some kind of action. It needs resurfacing everyone can see that and keep the speed restrictions on Brookhill and surrounding areas especially near the schools. Richard organised a meeting at Carnegie hall in September where a number of things were suggested where myself and Ray have been talking to the County Council for years. Lets hope something gets done now.

Stapleford football club goes from strength to strength, it now needs facilities fit for the effect people are working hard to achieve. A petition will be started after Christmas both on line and on the streets of Stapleford for communial facilities and a 4G pitch. Richard and myself will the upmost to get the ball rolling along with Pete and Jason, representatives of the club. Last month I was selected with local girl Lisa Clarke to represent Stapleford, Bramcote and Trowell at County level, it will be an honour and a privilege if elected to serve the area I was born in with pride. We had our annual cricket match raising ÂŁ2,000 for dementia, thanks to Simon Cockayne, Puss McGrath, Rob Attwood and Sandiacre cricket club, patrons of the Horse and Jockey, The Bell, Westend and The Old Cross. Thank you to all the people who attended. Finally congratulations to Shaz's Angels leader Sharon Hands who received an award for her great work in the community. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. John McGrath (Maggie)

Local fundraiser donates 60 hampers to deserving people in Stapleford Local fundraiser Sharon Hands of Copeland Avenue Stapleford recently took on the role of Mrs Clause as she hand delivered festive hampers to local people in Stapleford. Sharon the head of a charitable bunch known as Shazza’s Angels, spent six hours giving the gifts to people who had been nominated by their friends and family. Inside the hampers were everything a family could need for a festive feast – including turkey, tea ,coffee and a Christmas pudding. SharonHands, who works as a night shift manager for a food company, devoted hours of her spare time over the past 12 months organising raffles, pub collections, stalls, auctions and events to raise money for the hampers. She said: “Last year we handed out single gifts to old people in Stapleford and they enjoyed it so much that I decided to raise money all year round to put the hampers together.” Shazza’s Angels, based in Stapleford, raised £680 for the hampers, which were donated by Bakkavor Welcome Foods, in Sutton-in-Ashfield. Mrs Hands also received donations from Tesco and Broxtowe Borough Councilto add to the collection. She said: “One lady was crying. They were amazed. People couldn’t believe that someone wanted to give them something for nothing.“In fact a few people even wanted to give me money for the hampers. I came home

48

exhausted; my legs are killing me, but it was worth it.” Denise Stevenson, whose husband is 90 years old, received ones of the hampers, She said: “It was a lovely surprise. You don’t expect people to give you things. It’s just really lovely and nice. “It has lots of things in it for Christmas dinner and treats. Everyone will be round at my house on the day now.” Mrs Hands, has raised thousands of pounds for charity over the past 15 years. Her work is all the more remarkable as not only has she been diagnosed with a rare form of arthritis which makes getting around painful, but her husband Trevor has also recently been diagnosed with stomach cancer. She has raised money for a young girl diagnosed with terminal cancer, as well as for a four-year old with leukaemia, enabling her parents to take time off work to care for her. Mrs Hands, who first got the fundraising bug when she took part in a charity parachute in Chilwell at the age of 15, also raised £6,000 to provide sensory toys for a young child who has had multiple heart operations. She said: “I love the thrill of achieving what you want to achieve. It’s nice because you never know how much money you’re going to raise.”

40th Anniversary of Wollaton Natural History Society Forty years ago Wollaton Natural History Society held its very first meeting and a programme of evenings was planned to promote the study and appreciation of the natural world. In the early days they met in the Great Hall in the company of the famous Guy the Gorilla and a huge stuffed giraffe! These days illustrated talks are held on the third Wednesday of the month at St Leonard's Community Centre opposite Wollaton Library. The Society was initially called “The Naturalists of Wollaton” but this was changed in 1996 to “Wollaton Natural History Society” to avoid confusion with naturists! To mark the anniversary a celebration evening has been held by the Society at which current President Graham Birkett cut a cake and a display of photographs recalling past activities was held. New members and visitors are always welcome at the meetings which are open to all, not just Wollaton residents. For further details visit the website at www.spanglefish.com/WollatonNaturalHistory

WOOLLY ‘JUMPERS’ KEEP TREES WARM AT BRAMCOTE HILLS PARK TREES AT BRAMCOTE HILLS PARK have a new way to keep warm during the cold weather thanks to a local knitter from Wollaton. A Sweet Chestnut tree at the park was ‘yarn bombed’ by local knitter and Geocaching enthusiast Hannah Birch after she contacted Broxtowe Borough Council with a unique idea to dress the trees to celebrate the parks 10th year of Green Flag award success. The tree is located adjacent to the cycle track at the park and visitors can search for a hidden Geocache using their mobile phones when they find the tree. The yarn bombing was officially revealed on Friday 2nd December as Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Graham Harvey joined students from White Hills Park Federation Trust to plant trees around the main car park at the site as part of National Tree Week.

were donated in private memorial or commemoration. Future Yarn Bombing may appear at the park in 2017 to celebrate different events and activities. Keep visiting the park and you never know what new colourful knitted dressings you may see. For more information please contact Broxtowe Borough Council on 0115 917 3507, email grounds@broxtowe.gov.uk or visit www.broxtowe.gov.uk/parks

A total of 10 trees were planted to mark 10 consecutive years of the park holding the prestigious Green Flag award. The selection of trees were specially chosen for their excellent autumn colour and once established will provide a blaze of colour as summer fades. A number of the trees 52

The National Crime Agency (NCA) is asking people to protect themselves from malware after a computer network known as Avalanche has been taken down. Avalanche, which was set up in 2009, was used to send out millions of fraudulent emails weekly enabling cybercriminals to steal personal information such as financial details. At any given time up to 500,000 computers worldwide are believed to have been carrying infections distributed through the Avalanche network. On 30 November 2016 a global operation by police forces from more than 30 countries, including the UK, resulted in criminal enterprises losing access to Avalanche. In a single day of coordinated action, more than 830,000 malicious web domains were taken down, breaking the channel between criminals and the computers they controlled. In addition, five individuals were arrested, 37 premises were searched and 39 servers were seized, while 221 servers were put offline through abuse notifications sent to the hosting providers. Victims of malware were identified in over 180 countries.

concentrated on but was not limited to Windows PC vulnerabilities. To help protect yourself from the threat of malware you should ensure that you always download the latest software and app updates which contain vital security upgrades to help protect your devices. Remember if an email or SMS text message is unexpected or you do not recognise the sender always take care not to open attachments, or click on links. Dating / Romance Fraud. Many singletons will be making a New Year’s resolution to find their ideal partner and signing up to an online dating website. This can be a great way to find true love but you also need

to be on the lookout for fraudsters trying to win your affection and then asking for money to pay for them to visit you or help out with a family problem. Do not listen to promises of repayment – better to sever contact and look elsewhere. Top tips to protect yourself • Guard your privacy when chatting online and be selective with the information you provide about yourself. • Never send money or give credit card or online account details to anyone you do not know and trust. • Trust your instincts, if something feels wrong take steps to protect yourself. Mobile Payments. More and more people are using mobile devices, especially smartphones to make purchases. Data is usually stored in the phone’s memory and may be compromised if the device is ‘hacked’ or stolen. Top tips to protect yourself • Do not save passwords or personal/ financial data onto your mobile device unless it is absolutely necessary and make sure the phone is passcode protected. • If stolen, most mobile devices have the software to wipe all data from their memory remotely – learn how this works. • Do not leave your Bluetooth on as cyber-criminals can hack into your device unnoticed. Also install anti-virus software and check the security features.

Holiday fraud During or just after the festive period many people are keen to take a few days away, often in search of some sunshine or snow. With the expense of buying Christmas presents most will be going online on the look-out for a deal. However, it is important to be aware of fraudsters advertising fake holidays on websites or social media. These often come in the form of cheap ‘too good to miss’ package trips, bargain-booking offers for villas and ski chalets or calls and texts offering tempting last-minute deals. Top tips to protect yourself • Always pay with a credit card; if they don’t accept don’t buy from them. • Use companies that are ABTA or ATOL protected. Verify this protected status by contacting the Civil Aviation Authority. • Research the internet and consider the reviews of the company/person you wish to use before booking your trip.

Grown Ups Choice Gnome or Mr Nice Guy by Rosalind Winter Book 2 in the Rook Ridge series is as wonderful as the first book Ready, Steady, Dig! Both offer a funny and light story of friendship, discovery and a little bit of magic. I’ve chosen the second book as it is based during the run up to Christmas—but you do need to read Book 1 first; they are very short so you should just have time! Rook Ridge is the home to an old Roman settlement, and when the last Roman’s left the house they put their Lars in charge. The small statues took their role very seriously and despite their new home are insisting on keeping the present day members of the family safe and well. There is also a mystery gnome killer on the loose and in the busy Christmas season it’s the last thing that the Rook Ridge Visitor Centre needs. The characters are appealing and fun, with a good range of ages and relationships which would appeal to lots of readers. No real gnomes were harmed in the writing of the book.

Children’s Choice The Snowflake Mistake by Lou Treleaven and Maddie Frost We keep our wintery and Christmas books for December only, and wrap them up and then choose one or two each night as a surprise. It’s nice as we have either forgotten about them or have waited ages to re-read a favourite story. This new book by Lou Treleaven is a sure fire favourite already and will be in our wrapped pile for many years to come. It’s a sweet winter story about the Snow Queen and her daughter—the Queen is very clear about how snowflakes should be made, and that they should all be the same, this works well until the Princess is left in charge one day and forgets to set the machine up properly… All’s well that ends well, and the snowflake mistake actually gives the Queen and her daughter a chance to think about different ways to do things. It’s a lovely story, and with the such gorgeous illustrations It’s a joy to look at as well as to read. Lou Trevleavan has also written Prof.McQuark and the Oojamaflip which is another firm favourite - a review of which is on the blog.

GRAPEVINE TIPS FOR KEEPING KIDS ENTERTAINED WHILST FLYING Prepare for yur next holiday. Invest in a Trunki - They may appear a little overpriced, but Trunkis are a lifesaver for entertaining little ones when you’re in long queues, as your kid can happily propel him/herself around while sitting on top. Not only that, the strap allows you to pull your child around, saving their tired little legs if your walk to the departure gate is a long one. But in the meantime, a few cheaper forms of ride-on luggage are gradually trickling onto the market, like Skoot Kid’s and Kiddee Cases Get sticking with stickers -Stickers are great for keeping children entertained for a while – just give them an empty water bottle to decorate, or some scrap paper. Bear in mind that you will probably end up having to unpeel stickers from the back of the seat in front and from various parts of your child’s body, but it’s a small price to pay for keeping them quiet for 15 minutes. Take a pillow - Small children can sit on a pillow so they can see out of the window better, while older children may find sleeping more comfortable with a pillow. A blanket is also good as its familiarity will comfort your child as well keep them warm if it gets chilly on-board Take some sweets- Landing can cause painful ears – babies are often given a bottle to encourage them to suck and therefore swallow. The same principle will work if you give your child a lollypop (ideally sugar free) for take-off and landing, which will also distract them from the potentially scary sensation. Bring longer lasting foods - Offer foods that take longer to eat which will occupy your child for longer. A box of raisins is great because it contains natural sugars, normal sweets can be a great bribe but be warned: trying to contain a child in their seat once they have eaten an excessive amount of sugar can present a challenge! Download some kids‛ games or apps Before you board, download some kids’ games or kid-friendly apps to your smartphone or tablet (make sure to switch it to Airplane mode for the flight) Peppa Pig, Happy Mrs Chicken (chances are your child is obsessed with Peppa Pig, so anything starring the pink one will inspire awe, but this is actually a pretty good game).

Busiest day this year as the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance responds to six incidents in one day. It is hard to miss our distinctive yellow Ambucopter when it flies in the skies above Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire, but on Thursday November 24th it was in the sky more than usual as it responded to six incidents in one day making it the busiest day for our crew so far this year! Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance Usually tasked on average 3 times per day, the first call came in at 7.20am when the crew were called to a medical incident in Louth. They assisted on scene before returning to base at 8.53am for a de-brief. Just over half an hour later, at 9.32am, they were airborne again attending a road traffic collision in Stamford involving a lorry. Our clinical crew helped to treat the patient before flying straight to their third call of the day, this time in Bottesford where the patient had fallen from height. Our crew assisted on scene and returned to base at 11.09am. There wasn’t even time for a cup of tea before the next call came in just 11 minutes later. Our helicopter was scrambled again and called to another road traffic collision, this time between a car and lorry in Mansfield. Our doctor and paramedics assisted the land crew and returned to base at 1.12pm. Once

62

back at base, they had just over an hour to debrief the day’s incidents so far and catch up on some paperwork – and grab their first well-deserved cup of tea of the day! At 2.39pm the ‘bat phone’ rang again, and this time the crew were called to a medical emergency in Immingham, with yet another emergency call coming in at 4.43pm - their third road traffic collision of the day. Again, our clinical team assisted the land crew in treating an injured cyclist and then returned to base at 5.20pm. The day saw the crew utilize a number of different resources; the Ambucopter was in the sky for 164 minutes, taking an average of 13 minutes to reach each patient, and the Rapid Response vehicle took 7 minutes to deliver our critical care doctors and paramedics to the last emergency of the day. Chief Executive, Karen Jobling, said: “Thursday was a very busy day for the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance - it was one call after another all day as our crew travelled from Mansfield in the West to Louth in the East. Our Ambucopter is effectively able to take the equivalent of an A&E department to the scene of the incident and together with the advanced skills of our paramedics and doctor, increase the level of medical care patients can receive at the roadside, significantly impacting on their chances of survival and recovery.”

Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance is nongovernment funded so we rely on the support of our local communities to raise £2.1million every year to keep our helicopter flying, saving lives and improving outcomes for patients 365 days a year. On average the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance carries out between 2 and 3 missions a day. Each mission costs the charity approximately £2,100. The Ambucopter and Critical Care Team bring an enhanced care capability to the scene of life-threatening incidents, including agricultural, horse riding and motorcycle accidents, serious falls and road traffic collisions. They take care of people in their greatest hour of need. The Helicopter Emergency Medical Service is based at a purpose-built site at RAF Waddington. It has four crew (one pilot, two paramedics and one doctor). Since its flying operations began in 1994, the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance has been called upon for more than 17,200 missions.

IN THE COMMUNITY Keys Handed Over At Second Dementia Friendly Scheme The keys were officially handed over at Broxtowe Council's second dementia friendly housing scheme in Beeston last weeek in November 2016, , thanks to a partnership project between Broxtowe Borough Council, Nottingham Community Housing Association, Waters Homes and Pelham Architects to build specially designed and adapted bungalows for people with dementia. Bexhill Court The newly built bungalows have been incorporated into the Council's Retirement Living Scheme at Bexhill Court on Central Avenue who gave overwhelming support for the idea and the development. The homes have been designed to be dementiafriendly with special emphasis on colours, textures and patterns, as people with dementia can struggle with depth perception and patterns can cause confusion. Colour is also an important issue, to ensure that there is lots of light in the home but that things like doors, light fittings and toilet seats are dark enough to stand out and easy to distinguish. Each room in the dementia friendly bungalows will be a different pastel colour so they are easily identifiable to the resident, even if they are confused or disorientated. Chair of the Housing Committee, Councillor Eric Kerry said These fantastic new bungalows show how Broxtowe Borough Council has worked hard to provide specialist accommodation for residents affected by dementia. The transformation from disused tennis courts to what we have seen today is a magnificent achievement by everyone involved in the project. The development offers four x two bedroom bungalows, including a room for carers to help support the needs of individual tenants, together with an additional two x one bedroom bungalows for people who wish to move to Retirement Living. The project is part of the Council's on-going commitment to be a dementia friendly Council. For more information, please contact Broxtowe Borough Council on the details provided below or visit the Council's website. Housing Allocations and Options Manager T: (0115) 917 3443

IN THE COMMUNITY Toton Confirmed as HS2 East Midlands Hub Station Broxtowe Borough Council has welcomed an official announcement confirming Toton as the location of the Eastwood Midlands HS2 Hub Station. The announcement was made by The Rt Hon Chris Grayling MP, Secretary of State for Transport (Tuesday 15th November). In his report, he said that Having considered alternatives, the Government has chosen [Toton] as it is the best option for serving the whole East Midlands region, readily accessible from the cities of both Nottingham and Derby by a range of transport modes, and because of the potential regeneration and job growth opportunities that a new station will present. The Council is delighted to hear today's announcement. The development of HS2 brings huge economic potential for the East Midlands and Broxtowe Borough is perfectly positioned to secure maximum benefits for the local area in housing, jobs and connectivity said Councillor Richard Jackson, Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council. Some of the benefits include: Estimated ÂŁ1.1 to ÂŁ2.2 billion per year economic benefits to the East Midlands Between 30,000 and 90,000 additional employment opportunities in the D2N2 and Leicestershire area. Well integrated, high-quality local housing Improved connectivity and journey times to major cities including London, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester Investment in infrastructure to ensure the smooth flow of passengers in and out of the area Following technical work to assess potential alternative locations in 2015, Toton has remained the preferred option and the East Midlands HS2 Strategic Board found that it demonstrated greater potential to deliver economic growth and boost connectivity to Birmingham and the north of England. Further consultation work will continue and the next major milestone will be the Phase 2b Hybrid Bill in Parliament in 2019. For more information, please contact Chief Executive of Broxtowe Borough Council, Ruth Hyde by emailing ceo@broxtowe.gov.uk or visit www.broxtowe.gov.uk 66

Your blood saves lives. Your blood donation is an amazing gift to people who need it in an emergency or for on-going medical treatment. We need over 6,000 people to give blood every day to meet the needs of hospitals and patients. Each year we need approximately 200,000 new donors, as some donors can no longer give blood. Most people between the ages of 17-65 are able to give blood. Around half our current donors are over 45. That’s why we need more young people (over the age of 17) to start giving blood, so we can make sure we have enough blood in the future.Find out who can give blood, and then book an appointment to give blood. Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme - your right to ask If you live in Nottinghamshire, you can find out if your partner has a violent past thanks to the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme. About 'Clare’s Law' The scheme – also referred to as ‘Clare’s Law’ – aims to prevent men and women from becoming victims of domestic abuse. People worried that their partner may be harbouring a violent past are being urged to use a successful scheme. A 12-month pilot of Clare’s Law – the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme – concluded in September 2013 and Nottinghamshire Police will continue to run the scheme after it was introduced in September 2012. Tackling domestic violence is one of Nottinghamshire Police’s top priorities and the force was one of four that delivered the pilot. Who can request this information? Anyone who has contact with a potential victim of domestic abuse can request information from us however, they may not be the one to receive any information released. It will only be given to those who are best placed to safeguard the person at risk. Campaigners lobbied the government to implement the scheme following the murder of 36-year-old Salford mum Clare Wood by her estranged partner in 2009. She suffered months of sexual abuse and death threats before being strangled by George Appleton, who had a history of violence against women. How to make a request under 'Clare’s Law' To make a request for information under the Disclosure Scheme, contact us on 101, visit your local police station or speak to a police officer. Anyone can visit this website and read the Claires Law brochure, or download it, the site shows how to remove your browsing history and hide the site after viewing: http://www.nottinghamshire.police.uk/clareslaw Refs for Pets This charity can find a temporary home for your pets while you are living in temporary accommodation.
