Where do you get your news from?

In this day and

age, social media has become a huge influence on our lives. Not just for sharing information with our online friends and acquaintances, but it is now becoming the way that we consume our news. An event happens. Where do you first hear about it?

Often social media.

The big day. The day we found out that the UK had left the European Union. How did I find out the result? I woke up to a Snapchat from a friend. I then logged on to Twitter, to see not only comments of outrage but also celebration. Where did I go to next? The BBC news app on my phone. My Mum on the other hand, went straight to the news app on her iPad. Again, technology played an important part for us both. It was only later in the morning that my family put the BBC news channel on TV to watch the events unfold.

If I had stuck to social media, the news and associated comments would have flown straight to my phone and I could have been updated on the go. And… I wouldn’t have been late to college! The way we consume our news is changing rapidly.

In the 1960s, people would have switched on their television (if they had one) or radio to see what was happening in the world, or walked down to the local shop in the morning to buy a newspaper. Already, we

are seeing newspapers become less popular.

Stereotypically the older generation are the ones who are carrying on the traditional means of consuming news. Only last month, we saw the last two journalists working in Fleet Street leave the former home of national papers. For decades, Fleet Street was synonymous with the nation’s biggest newspapers. The first British daily newspaper, the Daily Courant, was published on the famous street in 1702.

Could this be the beginning of the death of our newspapers?

Somewhat worrying for a budding journalist like me is whether there will be any need for journalists to write in newspapers and appear on our news channels?

The answer; yes. We will still need journalists, but their roles will just adapt with technology and the way we consume our news. Today, social media is becoming one of the main sources of news online, with more than 2.4 billion internet users.

Nearly 65% of these users knew about a breaking news story through social media, as opposed to traditional media. Facebook has 38% of users regularly clicking on news links shared through the social media site. The news feed app Buzzfeed, has built a business based on the popular demand for consuming our news via social media.

The BBC, introduced their news app in 2010 which has had more than 40 million downloads across 200 countries. It’s very convenient that technology allows breaking news stories to go straight to your mobile phone. Sharing news through social media has become so successful because it allows users to actively comment and voice an opinion, debating current affairs with online friends.

Is getting our news from social media a positive development? Before the days of the internet connected world, our views would have been shaped by perhaps one specific newspaper or news channel. Today, things have changed. We can now access a multitude of different media sources as well as the thoughts and opinions of a wide circle of friends and acquaintances, as well as total strangers.

By consuming our news online or through an app, we are also able to instantly read other sources to check the validity of what we are consuming, but we can also research further into desired topics to broaden our horizons, But which sources are reliable?

The BBC is usually regarded as highly prestigious, a platform often used to obtain accurate information. Is getting our news from social media that accurate?

On social media, news stories can become slightly distorted. Have you ever read the comments underneath a news story on Facebook and realised that a number of users have misinterpreted events?

These comments are made by the general public like you and I, who undoubtedly have different backgrounds and views.

This is why there will always be a need for trained journalists, the majority of who will make sure the news you consume is accurate. By all means, enjoy interacting with other users on the latest news stories, but be careful what you believe.

STAPLEFORD ICE HOCKEY CHAMP CELEBRATES SUCCESSFUL SEASON A YOUNG ICE HOCKEY PLAYER from Stapleford is celebrating the end of a successful season after competing in the British Women’s Ice Hockey Friendship Tournament.

16 year old Jemma Wallis regularly trains at Bramcote Leisure centre as part of Broxtowe Borough Council’s ‘Elite Athletes’ scheme which supports talented athletes by offering free access to Council Leisure Facilities so they can train, to ensure their fitness is at a high standard to enhance their performance.

Jemma played in the tournament which was held in June for both the Sheffield Shadows under 16’s and Senior Women’s Elite team. Her love of Ice Hockey started at a young age when she attended her first Nottingham Panthers game at just two weeks old.

Jemma says: “Go for it! It's the best sport I could have picked, many lifelong friends have been made on the way and I can't wait to keep progressing, anyone can do it, give it a try.”

Jemma is currently training with the under 18s GB squad in the hope to qualify in September.

The Elite Athletes Free Use Scheme enables talented athletes who are competing at a national standard, the opportunity to access free facilities in Broxtowe. The scheme enables athletes to have free access to Borough owned swimming pools, racket courts and fitness suites for 12 months. The scheme aims to support athletes whilst they train to reduce the financial burden of training costs.

Athletes who compete in any Sport England recognised sport are eligible to apply to the scheme.

Broxtowe Borough Council's sports development team, Broxtowe Sport, work with a variety of different partners including residents, sports people, coaches, volunteers and clubs to improve the quality and range of sports provision in Broxtowe Borough.

The Nottingham Centre’s Autumn programme continues into October with the following: October 13th – A talk by Sam Lattaway on The National Forest.

Fraudsters selling non-existent drones

Online shopping websites are being utilised by fraudsters to advertise drones of various specifications for competitive prices which do not exist.

Drones are personal flying devices that often carry cameras and can be navigated remotely by smart phones or controllers.

Fraudsters are capitalising on their recent popularity and advertising nonexistent drones lower than the recommended retail price to tempt buyers.

After victims agree to purchase the drone, the fraudsters request payment to be paid via bank transfer saying that it will quicken the delivery process. After transferring the money the buyers never receive the drone and the fraudster blocks the victim to prevent further conversation.

How to protect yourself Check the validity of the post.

Avoid paying by bank transfer and instead use an online payment option such as PayPal, which helps to protect you.

Check feedback online by searching the associated phone numbers or email addresses of the seller. Feedback will give you useful information about recent transactions other buyers have made.

If the item is below market value consider whether this is an opportunity too good to be true.

Fake holding accounts target car buyers online

Shoppers in the market for a new car are being warned to keep an eye out for fraudulent emails when looking to buy vehicles online.

Victims have received emails claiming to be from ‘Amazon Payments’ or ‘Amazon Flexible Payment Services’ after agreeing to buy. These claim to be bank accounts that hold the buyer’s money for one week before releasing it to the seller.

Fake holding accounts The emails are designed to get victims of the scam to pay upfront before visiting the seller to collect the vehicle, claiming they have a one-week cooling off period to reclaim the payment if they change their mind. This gives victims the false sense of security that their money is being looked after by a trustworthy third party.

In reality, Amazon do not provide ‘escrow’ accounts to look after payments; they have been set up by the fraudsters to trick the buyer into handing money over without having to show them the vehicle they think they’re buying.

Protection advice When making a big purchase online such as a new car, always meet the seller face to face first and ask to see the vehicle before transferring any money.If you receive a suspicious email asking for payment, check for spelling or grammar errors and who sent the email. If in doubt, check feedback online by searching the associated phone numbers or email addresses of the seller. If you suspect it may be from fraudsters, report it to Action Fraud.False adverts often offer cars or vehicles for sale well below market value to entice potential victims; always be cautious if it looks too good to be true.

MORE LIFE SAVING DEFIBRILLATORS INSTALLED ACROSS BROXTOWE NEW defibrillators have been installed in Broxtowe Borough thanks to a partnership between Broxtowe Borough Council and its contractors.

New lifesaving equipment has now been installed in Brinsley, Cossall, Toton, Stapleford and Bramcote.

The Council’s contractors United Living, Vinshire Plumbing and Heating and Ian Williams, have worked with the East Midlands Ambulance Service and Town and Parish Councils to identify areas within the Borough where Public Access Defibrillators (PADS) could be installed, agreeing to sponsor the project by providing at least 8 defibrillators throughout the Borough.

The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman This is a self-help book for relationships, it focuses on marriage but is relevant to all interpersonal relationships.

It’s written by an evangelical Christian, so be aware of lots of religious references - however it’s a really interesting read. The author believes that people ‘speak’ to each other in different ways to express love, working as a counsellor he has developed 5 languages of love that people may use. The book is essentially a way to understand how you show love to others, and perhaps just as importantly—how you can be shown love—if you don’t speak the right language your love may not be being received as you intended and vice versa. If you are in a relationship, would like to be or work with people it is well worth a look.

Unexpectedly I have started changing how I express myself to lots of people in my life—and it seems to be working!!

If you enjoy the book, there are also the 5 Love Languages of Children and Teenagers.

Children’s Choice Mr Mustachio byYasmin Finch & Abigal Tompkins We are always attracted to unusual book covers, and although we’re not supposed to judge a book by them, everyone does! This one certainly caught our eye, and the quirky illustrations are a great feature of the book.

Mr Mustachio has the most extraordinary moustache, but a quick go on the roundabout has shocking consequences for him. It’s a silly story on the surface, but is also a lovely account of people trying to help each other. Recipes from Planet Barbecue BARBECUE FOOTBALL CHICKEN An excellent recipe for cold or cloudy days.

Having a few friends round and the weather's not to good, perhaps they want to watch the football and perhaps you do too!

This recipe requires little attention and is easy to barbecue while you watch the match.

Purchase enough chicken to allow 3 pieces each, try a mixture of chicken drumsticks and thighs.

METHOD With a sharp knife carefully cut or slice the chicken part way through, this will allow the flavours to penetrate the meat during cooking.

Make a large boat with 2 layers of silver foil Pour the sauce into the boat and add the garlic.

Toss the chicken in the mixture to coat, sprinkle with the parsley and leave to marinate for an hour or more (overnight is best).

Prepare and light the barbecue to cook indirectly (there is no need for a drip tray).

barbecue on a tray. Place on the barbecue (indirect method) and close the lid. leave for 45 minutes, keeping one eye on the barbecue and one eye on the match.

At half time open the lid, turn the chicken pieces with tongs and adjust the boat to ensure even cooking.

GREEN RESIDENTS URGED TO RECYCLE MORE NATIONAL RECYCLE WEEK 2016 and Broxtowe Borough Council is thanking residents for all the great recycling that’s being done as well as encouraging them to recycle more day to day items.

Residents can recycle plastic drinks bottles, food and drink cans, cardboard boxes and newspapers in the green-lidded recycling bin but ‘The Unusual Suspects’ such as aerosol cans, toothpaste boxes and toilet roll tubes; are often missed. There are lots of places around the home that ‘The Unusual Suspects’ can be found – can you hunt them down? What’s hiding in the bathroom or bedroom?

Paper and cardboard items such as toothpaste boxes and tissue boxes are lurking.

If everyone in the UK recycled one toothpaste box, it would save enough energy to run a fridge in over 2,000 homes for a year.

Keep an eye out for aluminium deodorant and air freshener aerosol cans. If everyone in the UK recycled one aluminium deodorant aerosol can, enough energy could be saved to vacuum over 480,000 homes for a year. Or, if everyone in the UK recycled one air freshener aerosol can, enough energy could be saved to run a fridge for over 91,000 homes for a year!

Taking a shower? The unusual suspect might be in there with you. Plastic shampoo, shower gel and moisturiser bottles can be recycled too. In the kitchen the unusual suspects help to keep things clean - washing up liquid bottles, soap dispensers, bleach bottles and spray cleaners can all be recycled.

Just remember, it’s best to remove the trigger spray and pump dispenser tops, as these aren’t currently recycled.

I hope to be working with responsible landlords in the Borough who share our aspiration for stable, affordable tenancies in quality properties” said Jyoti.

The Council have worked in partnership with landlords in the private sector for a number of years and the Agency will further develop these links by offering private landlords a free health and safety inspection of their property, a Deposit Guarantee Scheme and a tenant finder service or a full property management service.

STAPLEFORD COMMUNITY GROUP EVENT- a huge success!

The event was part of the local Super Kitchen Network which uses donated food which would otherwise be destroyed and end up in landfill sites.

We would also like to thank Dig-In Community Allotment and Bramcote Farm Shop who donated Food for the meals.

Of course none of this would have been possible if it wasn’t for the excellent work of the brilliant Pulp Friction CIC and of course the Volunteers from Stapleford who came to help too.

We were joined by Miss Teen Galaxy Nottingham 2016/17 Emily Redfern, who said:-“Today I’ve made an appearance at The Super Kitchen which is hosted by Stapleford Community Group.

I’ve helped to prep the food, welcomed the community in, served the food out to the guests and most importantly cleared up.I feel blessed to be part of such an amazing community who gather together even on the bank holiday weekend.During this event I was able to share my pageant knowledge to both the younger generation and old generation, in which both seemed intrigued in what pageant girls get up to daily.” United Kingdom Galaxy Pageants Pageant Girl – UK Pageant Organisers Stapleford Community Group.

IN THE COMMUNITY NEW PENSION FREEDOMS EVERYONE SHOULD BE TAKING STEPS NOW New flexibility means anyone over 55 can take all their savings in cash, either all at once or as and when they need it.

We need to raise awareness of what is likely to be a growing problem as hundreds of thousands of 55 plus savers gain access to pension lump sums.

Also, the Flat Rate State Pension came into operation in April 2016 and full details will be explained during the courses. We are a partner with the Pensions Service (Department for Work and Pensions) and any new legislation will be explained in full during the courses.

We aim to keep the courses very friendly and informal with an emphasis on the psychological approach to retirement and how to occupy the extra hours of leisure people will experience in retirement. Many people sleep-walk into retirement and spend more time planning a fortnight’s holiday than their retirement which could last a good 30 odd years or so.

If ever the nation needed a wake-up call, then this is it.

During the course, each delegate will be able to have a 1:1 with the speakers and also full updates will be given in relation to all the new regulations, together with calculations on the date men and women will receive their State Pension.

A 3 course buffet lunch will be provided, plus tea/coffee/biscuits on arrival and during the morning and afternoon breaks. A full pack of information, leaflets, booklets and magazines/newspapers will be provided to take home and refer to after retirement and hand-outs will be provided by each speaker. The Beeston Office is open for anyone to visit as a Resource Centre and for further help after retirement. Funeral director Alan marks 10 years working as the UK’s only mountain rescue team chaplain A Stapleford funeral director who spends his weekdays organising services for bereaved families will mark 10 years’ service in a very different role this month (September) – as the UK’s only chaplain for a mountain rescue team. Alan Winfield, who works for Gillotts Funeral Directors in Derby Road, has spent his spare time for the last decade on call for Derby Mountain Rescue, ready to join an emergency mission if required. Alan, 58, is believed to be the only person in the country who acts as a chaplain for mountain rescue and his duties include offering troubled colleagues a listening ear or calming the fears of family members worrying about a missing loved one. Derby Mountain Rescue covers the southern reaches of the Peak District, west Nottinghamshire and Derby itself and much of its work involves rescuing injured walkers and searching for people who have gone missing from their homes. Everyone who works for the group is a volunteer and although Alan is fully trained and does attend call-outs, he does not attend as many as other members, giving up his hours as chaplain and as the group’s secretary instead.On the face of it, you could not get two more contrasting roles than that of undertaker and saviour, but Alan, who has worked in the funeral industry for 37 years, says that there are far more similarities than there are differences, not least because both role are dedicated to the same ultimate aim – making people feel better at a difficult time. He is a licensed reader for the Church of England and was invited to become chaplain by the late Steve Hilditch, the former team leader of Derby Mountain Rescue, who felt that the group needed someone who could give emotional support to members and the families of the people they helped. Alan said: “When the team are working, the adrenaline’s going and their training kicks in but it’s only when the

adrenaline subsides, or maybe even weeks later, that people come to terms with what they’ve seen and experienced, which may be something distressing like a deceased person.I am used to working with death, but I understand that for many members of the team, it is something that they will never have come across before and the first time they are confronted by a deceased person can be a shock. My other role on searches can often be talking to the families. I can find out useful information or talk through their feelings of anger or guilt, which helps them deal with the situation and allows the rest of the team to get on with their job.” Alternatively, if Alan is out on a call and the team finds a deceased person, then he will always volunteer to help remove their body. He said: “It is the last thing that our team can ever do for that person, we are delivering them back to their family and that will hopefully give them closure, in the same way that working with a family and conducting a funeral gives them closure.I am very proud to have reached 10 years as chaplain for Derby Mountain Rescue.

I find both roles hugely rewarding and I enjoy the feeling of satisfaction from walking away knowing that I have helped someone’s family at the lowest point in their lives, or seeing a team member going back out to do what they are there to do.” Gillotts’ Stapleford office is one of five funeral homes operated by the firm, alongside offices in Eastwood, Kimberley, Selston and Heanor in Derbyshire.
