Watch the birdies!

With the RSPB's annual Big Garden Birdwatch taking place on January 25 and 26, when people are invited to spend an hour recording the birds they see in their own gardens and surrounding area to help provide a snapshot of bird numbers and species in Britain, we may see something other than wood pigeons or magpies.

Indeed, the mild winter so far should have proved beneficial to birds in this country because there will have been more natural food available including insects and accessible berries, according to the RSPB. However, it is crucial that gardeners still top up their feeders and birdbaths because if it does turn cold, the birds will need sustenance, the charity warns.

Last year's Big Garden Birdwatch results showed that some of the smaller birds which decreased in numbers the previous year bounced back.

Sightings of gold crests, the UK's smallest birds, doubled, long-tailed tits increased by a third and coal tits increased by a quarter.

But in the last 30 years many species have been in decline. Sightings of house sparrows, robins, chaffinches and starlings have all declined since 1979, while wood pigeons and collared doves have shown big increases.

Indeed, wood pigeons have become a pest to gardeners who grow their own winter brassicas such as kale and purple sprouting broccoli, providing a veritable feast for these large birds.

Some gardeners say the pigeons can be deterred by hanging up red cloths.

Others resort to covering crops using netting.

"Wood pigeons are happy in lots of different habitats, unlike other birds which aren't so adaptable," says Richard Bashford, of the RSPB. "Some birds avoid gardens because they are so timid but wood pigeons and collared doves will do well in

gardens. They will eat fruits, berries, grains and seeds and aren't fussy."

The problem is that the sheer size of the bigger birds can scare off small birds which venture into gardens. Plus, wood pigeon numbers continue to increase as they are not as susceptible to cold weather and have a longer nesting season, producing more chicks per year than other species. The young are fed on crop milk, produced by their parents.

However, there are specific foods which smaller birds love and which you might consider when re-filling your bird feeders.

Small birds such as goldfinches love nyjer seeds and sunflower seeds.

Peanuts are rich in fat and are popular with tits, greenfinches, house sparrows, nuthatches, great spotted woodpeckers and siskins.

Crushed or grated nuts attract robins, dunnocks and even wrens. But never use salted or dry roasted peanuts and only buy from a reputable source.

Fat balls are great for many birds, especially in cold weather, but make sure you remove them from any nylon mesh before putting them out, as birds can catch their feet in the mesh.

Live food such as meal worms are relished by robins and blue tits, and may attract other insect-eating birds such as pied wagtails. Make sure the mealworms you buy are fresh. Any dead or discoloured ones shouldn't be used as they can cause problems such as salmonella poisoning. Again, buy from a reputable source.

Of course, your own planting scheme can also go some way to

making your garden a haven for birds.

A good hedgerow, with a mixture of deciduous trees, shrubs and climbers will provide birds with both shelter and food. Leave an area of your lawn to grow long, to encourage insects to it, and add some nectar-rich plants such as knapweed, red hot pokers, Michael mas daisies, snapdragons, cornflowers and cosmos to your border.

Red and yellow flowers are said to be the most frequented by birds.

House sparrows can often be seen attacking red and yellow flowers in spring and autumn, eating buds and petals. Berried plants including the spindle bush, the rowan, holly and hawthorn are also a magnet to birds.

When buying bird food, avoid seed mixtures that have split peas, beans, dried rice or lentils as again only the large species can eat them dry.

Book Reviews by Claire Lyons Girls Are Best by Sandi Toksvig (non-fiction!)

SANDI TOKSVIG On the surface this may seem a little indulgent, however it is a genuinely interesting read for any gender. On the premise that history until very recently has been exclusively written by men T oksvig takes a look at some of the remarkable achievements of women throughout history. The short facts and humorous snippets as well as longer articles on some amazing individuals make it an easy 'flick through' of a book. Even as someone that has studied women's history there was lots to enjoy and lots of wonderful characters I had never heard of. If you have a young girl or teen in the family it's a great way to boost confidence and expectations by showing some positive role models and to prove that in many ways women are equal (if not better) than men. The chapters look at the fields of sport, exploration, science etc and have certainly sparked some fascinating discussions in our house, and lot of searching in other books and online for more information. Toksvig isn't derogatory towards men or dismissive of their achievements, but it is a refreshing change to see some women highlighted for their skills rather than just their appearancea fascinating read.

Children's Choice Winnie the Witch by Valerie Thomas & Korky Paul If you haven't met Winnie before you are in for a treat. The books are suitable for a wide age range as the stories are vety simple, but the illustrations are a masterpiece. Winnie is a slightly inept witch who (with her trusty pet cat Wilbur) has a range of great ideas to make her life better, many of which end in disaster and quick reversal to her original state. It's a great way to look at being grateful for what we have already- and just a good laugh at the various scrapes they get into. There are a large number of books now, some are seasonal or for special occasions Happy Birthday. Winnie! Get the job done!

 When decorating a room, the skirting boards should be the last thing you tackle, apart from the floor. If you're just doing the skirting boards, you'll be amazed by what a difference revamping them can make to the whole room.  It's essential to sand thoroughly before painting your skirting boards. Use an electric sander on the flat parts and sandpaper where the sander can't reach. Even if the existing paint is in reasonable condition, you still need to sand it to help the new paint adhere, especially if the

old paint is gloss.

Clean the wood thoroughly after sanding.  If your skirting boards are in poor condition, scrape and sand off any chipped, flaking or cracked paint and fill the repairs with flexible wood filler. Sand smooth when the filler is dry and then wipe clean.  If you're painting over bare wood, apply a couple of coats of knotting solution to the knots first to seal them and stop the resin in them from ruining your paintwork. Apply (quickdrying) primer and

The safest option is to remove and reapply the masking tape between coats and to use low-tack masking tape. Brush in towards the skirting board when painting over the tape to help to stop the paint from bleeding underneath. After you've removed the tape for the final time, you may need to touch up your paintwork for a neat finish.

A: I always recommend water-based quick-drying wood paint because it's nice to use, easy to clean off things it shouldn't be on, and takes very little time to dry, although you usually need to do quite a few coats. In my opinion, nothing beats white skirting boards and the good thing about white water-based wood paint is that it doesn't yellow over time, unlike oil-based alternatives.

Enjoy the spring sunshine by getting outside and sprucing up your exterior woodwork. It's not just your window frames and ledges that may need attention after winter - perhaps your front door could do with a makeover?

The Bay of Islands

he stretch of brilliant white sand ahead seems endless.

Flanked by massive dunes and the crashing breakers of the Tasman Sea, the Ninety Mile Beach which stretches along the coast of New Zealand's North Island is believed to be the world's third longest uninterrupted beach, and a sight of staggering natural beauty.

Wild horses roam this massive expanse of shifting dunes which climb hundreds of feet high, while seabirds such as petrels and albatross swoop over the waves, and bright-billed oystercatchers peck their way along the shoreline.

Sacred to the Maoris, this coastline has a rocky outcrop on Cape Reinga at its northern end marked by a lone gnarled pohutukowa tree. Legend says the spirits of the dead enter the sea here on their way to a spiritual homeland.

Closed to tourist rental cars, Ninety Mile Beach is not to be tackled lightly. The occasional car

roof peeping from the sand bears testament to former hapless drivers who misjudged tide times.

The Bay of Islands, a beautiful and historic part of the country, where in the late 18th century, a young naval lieutenant called James Cook first landed, and gave the inlet its name.

Then in 1840 some 46 Maori chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi with representatives of Queen Victoria, gaining full colony status â&#x20AC;&#x201C; although controversy continues to this day over differing translations in English and Maori and whether it actually gave sovereignty to Britain.

The restored Treaty House has since become part of a visitor centre, where the UK, New Zealand and Maori flags fly from a flagstaff overlooking the bay. And across the grass is the Maori meeting house (whare runanga) built in 1940.

On a summer's evening there are few more enchanting places than the Bay: wooded slopes of more

than 150 islands stretch as far as the eye can see across the sparkling blue water.

These days it's hard to believe this was New Zealand's 19th century capital - populated by whaling crews, escaped convicts, traders and rogues. Packed with brothels, grog shops and gambling dens, it was known as the 'Hellhole of the Pacific'.

Now quaint shops and tasteful restaurants are the order of the day.

The Bay of Islands may be the jewel in the crown but the rest of the North Island is no less captivating.

Much of the Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed here and the starting point for anyone arriving by the three-hour ferry from the South Island is New Zealand's capital of Wellington.

Although rather a functional place, the city does contain the magnificent museum of New Zealand on the waterfront, known as 'Te Papa'.

Also fun to visit is the parliament building, a sort of mini-Westminster with a quirky pub, The Backbencher, across the road, packed with Spitting Image-type models of MPs and an excellent menu.

From Wellington, we travel over the Desert Road and beyond the peaks of Tongariro National Park - one of them, Mount Ngauruhoe, was Mount Doom in Lord of the Rings.

We then reached the thermal wonderland at the centre of the island, Lake Taupo. Nearly 1,000 feet deep, it's actually a volcanic crater and the earth's crust between here and Rotorua to the north is so thin that steam and fumes are strong enough to drive the area's own thermal power station.

The best thermal park is Wai-otapu (place of sacred waters) where brightly-coloured minerals rise to the steaming surfaces to form the Artist's Pallet and the Champagne Pool. Lady Knox geyser spouts 40 feet into the air to delight the crowds every morning - its punctuality helped by a handful of soap.

around vibrant Auckland, the City of Sails, whose iconic skyline dominates one of the world's great harbours. With 2,500 vessels, Westhaven marina is the biggest in the southern hemisphere.

Adrenaline junkies love the place.

Bungee jumpers leap from the harbour bridge or the 1,076-foot Sky Tower, attached by elastic. Saner pursuits include a cruise round the

inlets, bays and little ports nearby or a meal in Viaduct Harbour, where bistros and seafood restaurants around the yacht basin buzz at night. A 15-minute bus journey takes you to the weekend beach playground of Mission Bay, where the renowned Fish Pot Cafe boasts the finest fish and chips in the city for around ÂŁ10. They're probably right.

There's nothing wrong with keeping the surfaces in your house clean.

But when you spend hours bleaching them every day, and don't leave the house because you're frightened of the germs outside, you may have obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).

A problem suffered by between 1-2% of the population, OCD can control a person's life, perhaps because they're cleaning all the time, repeatedly checking doors are locked and appliances switched off, or performing mental rituals in the belief it will stop them harming someone they love.

In the approach to OCD Week (February 18-24), the charity OCD Action hopes to raise awareness that OCD is a serious mental condition, which can ruin people's lives.

Joel Rose, director of OCD Action, explains that while many individuals experience obsessions, compulsions and anxiety similar to OCD, the symptoms must be profound to warrant a diagnosis.

"OCD can be a misused term," he says. "Those who are diagnosed are at the very severe end, and not just a slightly quirky person.

"It's like the difference between being sad and being clinically depressed. True OCD is when it's taking over your life."

Obsession The most common obsessions are a fear of contamination by germs, of behaving in a sexually inappropriate way or being aggressive â&#x20AC;&#x201C; for example a mother worrying she'll kill or abuse her baby.

"Compulsions are the actions you do to try and make things all right, like checking or cleaning," continues Dr Blenkiron. "Unfortunately, these only work for a short time and actually keep the problem going by becoming an unbreakable habit. Imagine you're convinced that someone you love will be killed in an accident today unless you touch the door handle three times.

This is what it's like to have OCD." Dr Blenkiron says OCD can affect someone's life so severely they're less likely to marry and can have more difficulty functioning in their work, and social life, than people with physical conditions such as diabetes.

Sufferers often think they're going mad, but Dr Blenkiron stresses: "People with OCD are not dangerous or out of control - quite the reverse is true.

It's unusual for sufferers to need to go into hospital, as OCD can be successfully treated in the community.

OCD Action says sufferers have the condition for an average of 12 years before they seek treatment, often because it takes them a long time to find the courage to get help.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists say the disorder has three main parts: thoughts that make you anxious (obsessions), the anxiety you feel, and the things you do to reduce your anxiety (compulsions).

While people can have compulsions without having obsessional thoughts, very often they occur together.

Carrying out a compulsion reduces the person's anxiety and gives them an urge to perform it again.

"The obsessions are repeated, unwanted thoughts or mental pictures that cause distress, and keep coming back into your mind even though you try to resist them," explains consultant psychiatrist Dr Paul Blenkiron.

Treatment involves 'talking therapy' cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and drugs, normally antidepressant selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).

Dr Blenkiron says CBT or medication will help about six or seven out of every 10 people.

CBT often involves a treatment called Exposure and Response Prevention, in which sufferers repeatedly face their anxieties. So if they have a germ fear, they'll touch a dustbin lid but resist the temptation to wash their hands afterwards.

Dr Blenkiron points out research has shown a change in activity and blood flow in the 'overactive' areas of the OCD brain, before and after CBT. There's much debate about the causes of OCD, but the Royal College of Psychiatrists suggest that stress brings on about one in three cases. Hereditary factors could also be important and an imbalance of the chemical serotonin in the brain has been identified in long-term sufferers.

In addition, if you're a neat, meticulous, methodical person with high standards, you may be more likely to develop the disorder.

According to The Royal College of Psychiatrists, those with OCD may have suffer from some or all of the following problems...

 Recurring unpleasant thoughts.  Repeated horrible mental pictures perhaps seeing yourself doing something uncharacteristically violent.

 Constant doubts, such as wondering whether you've caused an accident or left the door unlocked.

 An inability to make simple decisions.  A need for 'perfectionism' and everything to be in the right order.

 Regular feelings of anxiety, fear, guilt or depression, which can be relieved by carrying out certain behaviours.

Celebrities Many famous names are said to display OCD-like tendencies, including football star David Beckham and tennis ace Rafael Nadal.

Beckham reportedly insists on lining up his shirts according to their colour, and his wife Victoria says he's obsessive about symmetry and order throughout their home.

Similarly, every time Nadal plays a match, he takes a sip from each of his water bottles, then carefully lines them up so their labels all face the same way.

But it's not just sports personalities who display obsessive compulsive behaviour. Movie star Cameron Diaz is said to open doors with her elbows to avoid touching germ-infested doorknobs, and admits to scrubbing her Hollywood home scrupulously and washing her hands many times a day.

However, Rose stresses there's a vast scale of OCD behaviour, and points out: "Whenever it's said that a celebrity has OCD, they've obviously placed themselves somewhere along the OCD scale far enough to talk about it, but not so far that it stops them being an international sports or film star," he says. "It's about the impact it has on your life."

 Routinely thinking alternative 'neutralising' thoughts, such as counting, praying or repeating a special word, to correct obsessional thoughts.

 Performing rituals, such as washing your hands or arranging objects in a particular way, frequently.

 Hoarding useless and worn-out possessions.

 Making repeated requests for reassurance from others.

Children who have benefited from previous sessions met serving prisoners and soon became thoroughly engaged with the workshop making a real impact on them. One young attendee said: "I really enjoyed the crime day. The crime van really opened my eyes and made me not want to go in prison and I found it amazing when we found out about those 3 ladies that are in prison. Thank you for an amazing day, I will remember it for many, many years". The sessions, run by prison officers, are just one of a number of initiatives taking place in the borough to advise and educate the community in order to reduce crime. All year eight and nine pupils at the Eastwood school will attend the sessions which have been funded by the South Nottinghamshire Community Safety Partnership. Broxtowe Community Safety Partnership continues to provide a number of initiatives to tackle crime including amongst others, high-visibility policing, CCTV surveillance and project work within the community.
