Care and Support at Home Fraud Protection Toolkit Home is where we should all feel the safest, especially as years go by. Scammers, however, have found a way to invade the secure lives of many by targeting older people’s post, the internet and telephone, as well as unsecured documents.

The ever growing incidents of scams is putting many older people at risk, threatening to strip them of their assets, their independence and their trust. It is not just the impact a financial loss can have on an individual, regardless of age, but the knowledge that one has been duped into providing personal information, signing an agreement or letting people into one’s home. Home Instead have partnered with Think Jessica, a charity which works to raise awareness of scams and supports victims and their families, in order to spread the message about the scale of the problem and help protect vulnerable people. Through the provision of useful and practical information we aim to raise awareness of the risks facing older people in order to do everything we can to prevent these devastating crimes.Think Jessica was set up in 2007 by Marilyn Baldwin, whose mother Jessica, suffered for several years at the hands of fraudsters who tricked her into parting with thousands of pounds. The charity is supported by fraud protection agencies, local and international organisations, and police forces nationwide.In partnership with Think Jessica we have developed a toolkit that provides hints and tips to help you avoid being affected by criminal activity.

Summer Concert Programme for Nottingham Symphonic Wind Orchestra The Nottingham Symphonic Wind Orchestra (NSWO) is one of the leading wind orchestras in the UK, under the guidanWce of musical director Keiron Anderson. Along with its sister group, the Nottingham Wind Ensemble (NWE), it has performed in hundreds of concerts over more than two decades, celebrating a Silver Jubilee in 2012. It comprises local amateur musicians, as well as attracting players from across Europe and continues to delight audiences at home and abroad.

Many of the concerts are given in support of local and national charities, and the NSWO has raised over £100,000 since 1987. BOOK REVIEW BY CLAIRE LYONS

Flora Lively Investigates – Murder at the Maples by Joanne Phillips This is (hopefully) just the first book in a new detective series. Flora Lively is the owner of a removal firm, inherited from her father. Times are hard and a new national firm are moving into the town, so keeping their only client The Maples happy becomes very important. However, all at The Maples retirement home is not as it seems and Flora becomes embroiled in a series of sinister and strange events. The story manages to move between the various unsatisfactory relationships that Flora has with ease and the large number of characters is developed with skill, the story moves along quickly and is a very easy read. Flora is a very likeable character and the other characters are well formed and easy to imagine, it would translate well to a Sunday night family drama. The outcomes are not especially surprising but sometimes it’s nice to read a book that isn’t shocking, has no bad language and no sex. Joanne Phillips has written two other family dramas, you might enjoy Can’t Live Without and its sequel The Family Trap.

This is an enchanting character, a guinea pig faced with the extinction of dandelions… but Christopher happens across a seed and has to decide whether to keep it for himself (he really loves dandelions) or share it with his local community. WOLLATON VILLAGE DOVECOTE MUSEUM The museum opens on Sunday 11th May from 2.00-5.00pm. Special exhibition commemorating the centenary of the start of World War 1. As a result of lengthy research, the display includes panels of information and tributes to the eleven servicemen from Wollaton who died in service during WW1, plus photographs, artefacts, mementos and much more. There is also information on dovecotes and a recreation of a late Victorian parlour and scullery which feature new exhibits for 2014. There will be a guided walk around the village starting at 3.00pm and refreshments will be served.

Long Eaton Operatic Society Youth Group proudly presents.......Seussical JR Seussical Jr is based on the works of Dr. Seuss and weaves together his most famous tales, Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat and other characters from at least fifteen of his books. The Cat in the Hat is the narrator, and the show follows the adventures of Horton, an elephant who one day hears voices coming from a speck of dust. He soon discovers that within this tiny speck exists the smallest planet in the universe! On this tiny planet live a tiny race of creatures known as the Whos. Although ridiculed by the other animals in the Jungle of Nool for believing in something he cannot see, Horton stubbornly persists in his belief that the Whos exist. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant!

The youngsters are very busy rehearsing and are looking forward to presenting this lively production, brimming over with energy and a sparkling musical score, where everyone gets their moment to shine.

The show takes place from Thursday 3rd to Saturday 5th July 2014, starting at 7.30pm, with a matinee performance on Saturday at 2.30pm. The group is determined to give young people the chance to discover for themselves the beauty, diversity, interest and excitement that the nature can provide. So, over the coming months the team will be talking with other local charities, local businesses both large and small – anybody indeed who can help them meet their ambitious target. The Chairman of the Beeston Wildlife Group, Martin Butler reminded us of the fact that he had read, due to their sedentary lifestyle, today’s generation of youngsters is the first in recorded history to have a shorter life expectancy than its parents.

This saddens him greatly. He quoted “We must do something to start to put this right but we are going to need some serious help” Martin will be manning the group’s stand in Beeston Square on April 12th to help the Trust celebrate its 50th birthday and he’ll be delighted to have a chat with anyone who thinks they can help in any way at all.

Beeston Wildlife Group, the local section of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, is determined to get more children interested in and excited about the natural world - but they need all the help they can get to meet their objective to raise £10,000 over the next 3 years! It all began when Springwatch presenter Chris Packham gave a talk to the group during which he expressed his real worry that too few kids were getting outdoors and exploring their natural environment. Inspired by Chris’s call to action, the group used the proceeds from the talk to fund membership of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust’s ‘Wildlife Watch’ for two Beeston Rylands schools. Now, they want to build on these “first steps” to involve other Broxtowe schools in the programme providing young people with access and exposure to the natural world. Little Grapevine Tips Always losing keys?

Place a small purse designated in your handbag just for keys and get in the habit of putting them in each time you go out. Saves time rummaging through.

Keep them in a cup or bowl near the door, and get in the habit of placing them when you enter

To ensure you have soft towels at all times, wash in laundry liquid rather than powder, and take out of the dryer or off the line before they’re bone dry.

Soaking hard towels in a solution of water and white vinegar (145ml vinegar: 4.5 litres of water) will bring them back to life.
