In 2020 our students achieved a 100% pass rate and a high percentage went on to the university destination of their choice, including many prestigious Russell Group institutions such as Oxford. Building further on our previous success, in 2020 our proportion of high grades increased again to 55% achieving A*-B, enabling even more of our students to get into their first choice university. YOUR CHOICES
Here at The Bedford Sixth Form we offer a large range of A-Level subjects, Diploma courses (which are equivalent to A-Levels) and a GCSE Foundation Programme for those who need to secure the grades to move on to A-Level study. Those studying A-Levels or Diplomas (Level 3) will typically study here for two years. Those studying the GCSE Foundation Programme (Level 2) will study for one year before moving on to the next level of study (Level 3), typically for two more years.

A-LEVELS AND DIPLOMAS A-LEVELS
A-Levels are academic, examinationbased qualifications recognised as traditional qualifications to gain entry to university and higher education. A-Levels focus mainly on academic subjects and qualify for UCAS points (maximum 56 UCAS points per A-Level).
Typically you study here for two years. In your first year you have the opportunity to take a combination of A-Levels, or an Extended Diploma with one A-Level. If you choose to study A-Levels you may sit one or more AS exams at the end of your first year. This depends both on your performance and whether or not AS exams are available in the subjects you have chosen. Typically you will complete three A-Level subjects or the Extended Diploma plus one A-Level over the two years. Some students will complete four A-Level subjects. Whether you can start with three or four A-Levels will depend on your GCSE results, as explained below.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
All students must meet the minimum entry requirements, which are: •
At least five GCSEs at grade 4 or above (one Vocational or Technical qualification at Merit or above may be counted), one of which must be GCSE English Language or English Literature AND
•
A minimum of a grade 3 in GCSE Maths (if you have a grade 4 or above in Maths this can count as one of your five GCSEs above) AND
•
At least grade 4 (or Merit for Vocational or Technical qualifications) in any subject(s) that you have taken at GCSE and wish to continue studying at A-Level.
•

DIPLOMA COURSES
Foundation and Extended Diplomas are equivalent to A-Levels but are assessed via a combination of coursework and exams. Foundation and Extended Diplomas enable you to progress on to university, higher apprenticeships or employment. The Foundation Diploma can be gained as a qualification at the end of the first year of the Extended Diploma course. It is possible to earn 168 UCAS points from our Cambridge Technical Extended Diplomas and BTEC National Diplomas. Please note that courses are subject to change. If you wish to start with four A-Levels, rather than three, then the following entry requirements apply: •

GCSE FOUNDATION PROGRAMME If you have just completed your GCSEs and not quite got the grades you require for our A-Level programmes, then this foundation programme year is for you. It provides a direct progression route on to our A-Level and vocational Level 3 programmes. You will take a range of GCSE subjects, which both complement the A-Level subjects we offer and enable you to smoothly transition from GCSE up to A-Level/Level 3. You can choose from: • Art & Design

The course contains elements of Biology, Chemistry and Physics which will equip you with a broad knowledge of science at Level 3. The course is equivalent to two A-Levels, so you will be required to select one or two A-Levels to study alongside it.
This subject will provide you with a detailed understanding of: the physiology within the systems of the human body; and an introduction to biological molecules, energy processes, control mechanisms and genetics.
NEXT STEPS
You will have the opportunity to carry out practical investigations, including genetic analysis techniques used in the industry.
This course allows you to progress into direct employment in scientific laboratories or apply to universities to do subjects such as Biomedical Sciences, Healthcare, Forensic Sciences and many biology and chemistry related degrees. Some universities express a preference for A-Levels over BTEC courses, however recent changes mean that universities are becoming increasingly accepting of these courses. Please note that this course is not suitable for most physics-related degrees.

This course consists of a variety of modules needed to understand business; including the business environment, working in business, business decisions, human resources, economics and change management. The diversity of the units is something which appeals as it captures the fast pace environment similar to real life business to engage and inspire you. This course is equivalent to three A-Levels and you will be expected to study an additional A-Level alongside it.

This A-Level subject will provide you with a critical understanding of a wide range of business topics. Topics covered over the two years include: Management and Leadership, Marketing, Finance, Human Resource Management, Operations and Strategic Positioning Direction and Change. Real life case studies will be used wherever possible to make it easier for you to relate to and understand business related topics. You will develop the knowledge and skills needed to analyse data, think critically about issues and make informed decisions.

SUBJECT OVERVIEW The study of chemistry is important for understanding numerous processes that occur on the planet, whether inside the earth, in the atmosphere or in biological organisms. During this course you will study the theoretical background to why chemical reactions occur, why different materials possess their particular properties, structure of the atom, significance of the arrangement of electrons and the importance of the periodic table in predicting properties. You will look at different types of molecules and their various reactions, and factors affecting how and why they occur.
Many students who study this subject are planning on taking a business-related course at university in subjects such as Business Management, Marketing, Economics or Human Resources. You could also go into employment in areas such as business administration.

JACK’S STORY A-Levels: Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Computer Science Previous School: Ousedale School, Milton Keynes “I knew when I finished my GCSEs that I wanted to study Biology and Chemistry further, so I was quite focused on these subjects when I was looking at where to study for my A-Levels. My time at The Bedford Sixth Form has been a very rewarding and fulfilling experience, and I’ve certainly developed as an individual. I really enjoy studying Genetics. The modification and technology of it fascinates me; how something so simple can give rise to so many things. The tutors have brought out my passion through discussion and frequently going further than the basic specification for the course. The Sixth Form has offered me lots of opportunities to further explore the subject. I’ve been on a trip to the Wellcome Trust in Cambridge and to a Biology in Action conference. I’ve also been on the Human Whipworm Genome Project team and have recently got through to the final 16 out of over 9,000 UK entrants in the Biology Olympiad. The top four from the next round will create the UK team to compete in Nagasaki, Japan, so it’s another fantastic opportunity offered to us by our class tutor.
I have a conditional offer from the University of Oxford to study Biochemistry. My tutors have been very supportive of my Oxbridge application setting up mock interviews and giving me extra one to one time the week before to settle my nerves. The Drama department was a big part in my decision to come to The Bedford Sixth Form. I really liked the course because it is more practical based, whereas a lot of others have more theory. The facilities here are also very good and there are lots of opportunities to perform. It was important for me to attend a sixth form because I think, whatever your career plans, A-Levels are always a good thing to have. I have found that my other subjects very much complement the Drama course. English helps me to study both the personalities of different characters and the intentions of writers, while History helps me to create context around a play or screen production. I have applied to a few drama schools and a couple of universities to keep my options open after Sixth Form. My teacher is helping me with my audition pieces. The Bedford Sixth Form offers less of a school atmosphere and it’s easy to make friends because everyone is new here. The teachers are very energetic and passionate about their subjects, which helps you to engage in your subjects and enjoy them. I like studying Economics because there is so much to learn that you can apply to everyday life. We cover market failures, supply and demand and the housing market to name just a few. I believe it will help me to understand things when it comes to making decisions in later life and I already find myself speaking to friends in economic terms! The Sixth Form building is very nice and the class sizes are quite small, which is good for discussion work. I also use the Library which gives me access to plenty of computers and resources. CHARLIE’S STORY A-Levels: Graphics, English Literature & Language, Photography Previous School: Redborne Upper School “I chose to study Graphics because I like being creative and making things look good. There are very good facilities here at The Bedford Sixth Form. It’s a really cool building with lots of creative spaces and I like spending time in the art rooms and having the freedom and independence to do so. I also like that the teachers trust me to get on and do my work. For instance, our recent exam brief enabled us to choose our own theme and use different media to create our project. This means we often mix with other departments, such as the Photography department, and use new methods such as monoprinting.
I particularly enjoy designing graphic tees and outside of Sixth Form I work on designs for a local clothing company, which I hope to continue doing when I take a gap year after my A-Levels. I’ve also had work experience at a company that designs the packaging for brands such as Reebok and Adidas. I’m planning to study either Graphics or Visual Communication at university. I want to get into designing as a career, but in a creative environment. I have always made videos while on holiday and taken lots of photos too. I studied Media at school, which I really enjoy, but this is my first time studying Photography in detail. I’m learning lots of techniques that also cross over into my videography work, such as editing and lighting. I enjoy doing the photo shoots. There is a lot of work that goes into them from researching both the topic and the inspiring artist, to working out the lighting and positioning. Once we start shooting we are given free rein by our tutor to try different things out.
I would like a career in media and I believe the combination of subjects I am studying here at the Sixth Form complement each other very well. With writing, photography and videography skills I will have the whole package that media companies are now looking for. I’d like to progress on to an apprenticeship after Sixth Form, as it’s important to build up experience in this industry. I am hoping to get an internship with ITV. I visited them during my GCSEs and learnt a lot, plus it would cover many of the skills I want to pursue in my career.”

PRIYA’S STORY A-Levels: Sociology, Economics, Politics Previous School: Mark Rutherford School “After finishing school I was ready to study some new subjects. The Bedford Sixth Form appealed to me because of the variety of subjects on offer and I chose Sociology, Economics and Politics. I’m really enjoying the Sociology course, particularly the work on education where we look at differences such as gender, ethnicity and class. I also enjoy studying crime. In a recent unit on corporate crime we were all given an area to focus on and my group chose to look at the Grenfell Tower incident. Sociology is a good subject to choose because you are always looking at things from different viewpoints and in different ways.
The teachers are very supportive and they help with exam practice questions to prepare you in plenty of time. I use the library a lot because it offers a good space with plenty of computers. All in all, you can be much more independent at Sixth Form than you can be at school. I’m looking forward to going to university after the Sixth Form to study Law. Each of my subjects touch on areas of law and they all complement each other very well. I’d eventually like to train to be a Barrister.”

We strive to ensure a safe and welcoming environment at The Bedford Sixth Form, and have safeguarding and anti-bullying policies in place to ensure that young people and vulnerable adults studying with us do so in a safe and secure environment. If you are aged 16-18 on 31 August 2021 and a British or European Union resident, the tuition and exam registration fees for your course are FREE. If you are aged 19 to 23 on 31 August 2021 and looking to study your first full Level 3 qualification, the tuition fee will be FREE. If you are aged 19 or above on 31 August 2021 and already have a Level 3 qualification or if you are aged 24 or over, you will need to pay a fee. For help with subject related questions and queries, their subject tutors will always be on hand to help, making sure your child gets the help they need to perform at their very best.
HOW CAN I KEEP UP TO DATE WITH MY CHILD’S PROGRESS? We feel students perform better when their parents take an active role in their education, so the Sixth Form holds parents’ consultation evenings and issues written student progress reports.

ALUMNI NETWORK Being part of the Bedford Sixth Form community doesn’t end when you leave us to go on to university, an apprenticeship or employment. You will always be valued as one of our alumni and will have the opportunity to be part of a network reaching years into the future. Who knows what kind of events, reunions and opportunities you might be part of in the years to come? Previous students have supported our current learners with careers talks in various subjects including, most recently, Law. 2. VISIT US To discover more about your chosen subjects and life at The Bedford Sixth Form, attend one of our Virtual Open Days throughout the year. Our Open Days are on:
Within four weeks you will attend an interview with one of the team who will be able to answer any questions you may have.
5. RECEIVE YOUR OFFER We will let you know if you have been successful and offer you a place at The Bedford Sixth Form at your interview (subject to achieving the relevant entry requirements).
6. WELCOME DAY You will need to attend our special welcome event on Monday 28 June 2021 where you’ll get a real insight into life and your course at The Bedford Sixth Form, so please keep this date free.

7. ADVICE SESSIONS Post-GCSE results advice is available at our GCSE Advice Day on Thursday 19 August 2021 – speak to us if you haven’t already applied and we’ll discuss your options.

Remember: you should apply before you receive your GCSE results using your predicted grades. Once you have applied you will be sent information on a regular basis, which will keep you informed of the status of your application.
Remember to apply as early as you can in order to get your first choice of subjects.
You will be invited to review your GCSE results with us at the end of August 2021 and finalise your offer of a place. Enrolment will be Friday 20 August 2021 and Monday 23 August 2021, please ensure you keep these dates free. See page 62 for term dates.

£4,000 ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE BURSARY SCHEME AVAILABLE
You may qualify for a £4,000 bursary if you achieve eight GCSEs grades 9-6, including English Language and Maths, and at least four of your GCSEs are at grades 9-7. You will need to study our full-time A-Level (or equivalent Level 3) programme. The £4,000 is paid over two years.
