ENGLISH AND MATHS:

WORK EXPERIENCE

Love them or hate them, English and maths are essential for work and education. Many employers complain that too many young people lack the literacy (English) and numeracy (maths) skills needed for jobs in today’s workplace. If you’re not yet ready for work, but want to continue in education, you’ll also find that entry on to higher level courses requires grades 9–4 or A* – C or in GCSE English and maths. In short, they’re very important and we’ll help you get the grades you need.

Work experience is a key (and fun!) part of your full-time study programme at college. We have strong links with hundreds of employers in every industry area to ensure we find the best placement for you. Every student has a minimum of 20 hours per year of external work experience. Here’s a little peek at where some of our recent students have spent theirs: • • • • • • • •

I have really enjoyed learning in the workshop; we are set a range of practical tasks and get lots of good advice from the tutors. I did my work experience placement at the builder’s merchants

It went really well and I was able to try lots of things, like working in the stock room learning about the range of products, and also working on the store floor dealing with customers. became interested in plumbing because “ I it’sfirsta well-paid profession and everyone needs a Plumber. Nothing at school really interested me so coming to Tresham College gave me more freedom to focus on what I wanted to. I knew nothing about plumbing before coming here, so the practical

work took a while to grasp, but the tutors are really good. I really enjoy the practical tasks; from working with steel pipes, to installing a hot water cylinder in an airing cupboard and soldering it to the mains supply. I love being able to build something and make it work.

I have completed 100 hours of work experience with a local plumber and am looking forward to moving on to an apprenticeship and transferring all of the skills that I have learnt to the workplace. I’d like to eventually become a qualified Plumber and the college is helping to open up plenty of opportunities for me.” Kai  |  Plumbing Level 2

efore I came to Tresham College I studied a “ B similar Level 2 programme at another college. I moved to Tresham College because the Games Design study programme really appealed to me and there were better materials here. I enjoy the coursework creation and working on short films, as it

is enabling me to put together a portfolio for work. I’d like to get straight into work after college, so I’ll be applying for jobs almost instantly. I’d love to live in London and work for a games design company in the city.

I’ve had some work experience at CeX in Kettering, which involved general sales assistant work on the shop floor as well as pitching products to sell. College is all about being you; it’s not as restrictive as school and you can just be yourself. I’d recommend it for anyone looking to learn specific skills, or, if you’re not satisfied with the usual school subjects on offer, then college provides an escape from that.” Liam  |  Games Design Level 3

ENGINEERING

I always knew I wanted to study Engineering, but I didn’t have any prior experience of the subject before starting college. It wasn’t a problem because the tutors were very helpful and supportive while I was getting the hang of the basics and learning to use the machines on the Level 2 programme.

Now that I’m studying at Level 3 I enjoy the independence of the welding work and the creativity of working on Computer Aided Design (CAD) drawings. You are treated as if you are in the workplace, rather than a child in a classroom, and the study programme teaches you the skills that will transfer to the workplace while giving you an all round understanding of what goes on in the real world.

I have undertaken work experience at two engineering firms and all of the machinery that they use is the same as we have here at college. I am confident that I will be ready for the world of work when I finish studying at Tresham College.” John   |  Engineering Level 3

CREATIVE MUSIC & PERFORMING ARTS AND MEDIA ARTS

my background is in ballet, I would like “ Aa lthough career in musical theatre and this is the best college course I found that would give me the all round training I need for my specific career path. I’ve danced since I was young and attend ballet, limbering and pointe

classes outside of college. I love how intensive this programme at college is; both the challenges it brings and the routine. For example, I had never tap danced, so learning that was a big challenge and we are always rehearsing for performances – we do six per year, plus two dance shows.

The tutors have so much industry knowledge and they are focused on getting you where you want to be; they’re very supportive. We’re also lucky enough to have great facilities including the lighting, stage area, dance studio and performance hall. I am looking forward to going to the Italia Conti Academy in London to continue my training and study the three year Diploma in Musical Theatre. My goal is to become a professional performer in musical theatre.” Cara  |  Musical Theatre Level 3

“ It’s the best place to be as the college offers

experiences to play at a professional level; I’ve had trials at Peterborough United as well as getting the opportunity to play for the England Colleges National Team. The facilities are excellent too, being able to train and play on a 4G Astro pitch as well as using the gym during breaks. The academy also has a sports therapist, helping you stay in shape and avoid injuries.

I chose to come to Tresham College because of the Football Academy. It’s a great way to develop as an individual player as well as a team player. Tutors at the college give plenty of guidance helping you achieve the highest grade possible with their wealth of experience.

I have been offered an American Scholarship as a result of the Football Academy. The scholarship will also give me the opportunity to study a degree alongside playing football every day.” Ryan  |  Sport Level 3 and Football Academy
