STUDENT DESTINATIONS At Shuttleworth College we are dedicated to getting our students where they want to be in life. We provide a great education in environments that mirror the working world, alongside training to give you the practical skills you need to get ready for the world of work. We make sure our students are fully on track demonstrating to employers that they’ve got what it takes to succeed. Here’s where some of our former students have gone on to...

SOPHIE Study Programme: Floristry Advanced Level 3 Destination: Sophie May Floral (Own Business) “As a result of studying Floristry Advanced Level 3 at Shuttleworth College I decided I wanted to open my own business. I gained a lot more than floristry experience during my time at College, I also learned about the admin side of floristry, such as organising flower orders in a logical, effective and efficient way. I do a variety of different things from gifts and weddings to preserving flowers in resin.”

JOEL Study Programme: Animal Management Level 3 Destination: BSc in Zoology and MSc in Ecology at University “After dissapointing results in my AS-Levels, I was genuinely worried that I would never make it to university. I’d heard about Shuttleworth from a friend of mine, so I thought it would be worth visiting an Open Day. I was genuinely astounded. The animal collection at Shuttleworth really is something to get excited about; reptiles, ungulates, arachnids, parrots and hosts of other things I hadn’t even heard of. As a results of going to Shuttleworth College I chose to o a BSc in Zoology and then a MSc in Ecology.”

RACHEL Study Programme: Outdoor Adventure Advanced Level 3 Destination: Bare boat/Flotilla skipper in Greece “I chose to come to Shuttleworth College because I enjoy getting involved in outdoor activities and wanted to pursue a career in the outdoors. I also thought it would be an ideal way to travel and see the world. Outdoor Adventure was so much fun. It has opened up so many different career pathways and opportunities that I never would have had before coming to Shuttleworth College.”

RHIANNON Study Programme: Animal Management Level 3 Destination: Veterinary Nurse Training “Before Shuttleworth College I went to Stratton Upper School, mainly because it had a farm. I studied there for four years focusing my studies on the qualifications I would need to become a veterinary nurse. After Stratton I came to Shuttleworth to do the Level 3 Animal Management course. I did the full two years and came out with high grades, which allowed me to get on the veterinary nurse course. Shuttleworth helped me to get on this course thanks to the lecturers who were extremely helpful and the facilities needed to encourage learning. I am now in my second year of study to become a veterinary nurse and am loving every minute of it.”

English & maths

English and maths English and maths are essential for work and education and many employers complain that too many young people lack the literacy (English) and numeracy (maths) skills needed for jobs in today’s workplace. If you’re not yet ready for work, but want to continue in education, you’ll also find that entry on to higher level courses requires grades 9–4 or A*–C in GCSE English and maths. In short, they’re very important, but don’t worry, we’ll help you get the grades you need to excel.

Work experience

“I am doing my work experience on a dressage competition yard, Contact Dressage, and next year we will start to get help with our university applications. I would like to study Equine Physiotherapy – either at university or as an apprenticeship – and qualify as a physiotherapist to work on a competition yard.”

Amber | Equine Management Level 3 Previous School: Cottesloe School

Work experience is a key (and fun!) part of your full-time study programme at College. We have strong links with hundreds of employers in every industry area to ensure we find the best placement for you. Every student has a requirement to do a minimum of 20 hours of external work experience per year. Here’s a little peek at where some of our recent students have spent theirs: • Paradise Wildlife Park – Animal Management • Shepreth Wildlife Park – Animal Management • Woburn Estate – Countryside & Wildlife Management • PGL Activity Centre, Isle of Wight – Outdoor Adventure • Keith Harte Bloodstock at Woburn Stud – Equine Management • Dan Skelton’s [racehorse trainer] Racing Yard – Equine Management • Veterinary practices • Arable and livestock farms • Garden centres • Landscaping companies

stay with the same employer after their qualification ends1

“When I left school two years ago I went to work as an apprentice. I started on this course at College about three months after starting work, and I now study here one day a week. I chose to get into tree surgery because it’s not just a job, it’s a lifestyle. I love being outdoors and have always wanted an outdoor job. There is a lot more to tree surgery than some people think; it’s not just about using a chainsaw, but about the climbing systems and equipment too, plus it’s a growing industry globally. My tutors are great; they’re very supportive and help to motivate me. They’ve all worked in industry and so their professional contacts are good for networking.”

Access to Higher Education

“Before starting this Access course at Shuttleworth College I had been out of education for ten years. I worked in retail after leaving school and more recently had a cleaning job. Whilst this offered plenty of flexibility while my daughter was young, I wasn’t happy and deep down knew I wanted to get back into education. I love animals and have always had a dream of opening a cat sanctuary. I looked into Animal Care courses after a colleague recommended Shuttleworth College to me. When I spoke to staff they suggested I’d be a good candidate for the Access course, so here I am! I took out the Advanced Learner Loan to cover the cost of the course and the College has been fantastic helping with childcare fees and a travel bursary. My plan is to go on to an Animal Science degree here next year, which I would never have believed when I started looking at courses. I’m not very academic so the Access course has been a challenge, particularly the assignments and essays. However, the tutors have been fantastic at keeping us on the right track – and they really bring the love of animals alive! I’ve come to realise that I am more than capable; I’ve just got to keep that self-confidence going inside. Shuttleworth College is such an inspirational place and the Animal Unit is fantastic. We get to work with so many different species and you can’t help but take pride in caring for them.”

Animal Sciences

“I always had pets growing up, but the science side of animal management interests me as much as actually handling and looking after the animals. My dream is to run my own safari park, so after College I want to work towards a degree in Animal Science and then find employment in a zoo where I can gain more experience. I really enjoy the theory work we do at College, particularly the Biology unit. I like being able to understand how different species function internally, and I also enjoy the theory behind the practical work we do; learning how to care for animals, their feeding requirements etc. We have a practical session in the Animal Unit once a week and there are so many different species, many of which I had never seen in real life before starting at Shuttleworth College, such as the alligators and the different species in the exotic room. It’s very exciting to think that this time next year we will be studying in the brand new Zoological Education Centre here at Shuttleworth.”

“At home I train young horses and have competed in British Dressage (BD). I have a four-year-old mare who is really well bred, so I’m hoping to compete in BD with her too. I love riding the different horses at College. They all have such different temperaments to get to grips with. We also get to work towards our British Horse Society (BHS) Progressive Riding Tests as part of the course. The practical work out of the saddle, for me, is about polishing up on things I already know and making sure I learn the correct way of doing things. The theory work is also interesting, from biology and anatomy to feeding. I love learning about the muscles of a horse and have always been interested in the work my equine physiotherapist does on my own horse.”

“I got into fishing through my dad when I was younger, and have done it ever since. I mostly fish for carp, pike and perch. I chose to come to Shuttleworth College because of the tutors, who are very knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and the facilities, which are really good and being developed further. I am really enjoying the Fish Farming and Habitat Management units on the course, but I also enjoy the theory work on biology and the chemicals we use. It’s a very hands-on course and, because I live on site in halls, I can come and help out whenever I want. One night, for instance, we had some eggs hatch, which I helped with. We’ve been on two big trips. In the first year we went to Holland to study carp fish farming and this year we went to Malta to see how tuna are farmed. Back at home we often go off site for practical lessons, such as netting, and have been on various day trips, such as to the Environment Agency’s fish farm near Calverton. We also have to do a work experience placement, which I did at Cuttlebrook Koi Farm in Thame. When I finish College I want to go to university to study Fisheries Management & Aquaculture.”

Land & The Environment

“My dad is a gamekeeper and so being out in the countryside is a natural lifestyle for me. I’ve grown up doing all sorts of countryside pursuits and now enjoy shooting, plus some dog agility! Shuttleworth was recommended to me by a friend who said the Agriculture courses were very good, so I chose to come down here and stay in Halls. I love how hands-on we get to be on the course; we are trusted to be with the cattle and get involved with the lambing, so the environment feels very mature. As I live on site I am able to pop up to the farm and see where I can help at any time. As we cover machinery, maintenance and livestock on the course, it really prepares you for working in the industry, plus we gain lots of industry contacts through the cattle showing and lambing, even with the local butchers. Livestock is my favourite part of the course, although I am going to work on an arable farm over the summer, just to cover all options! I’ve already completed work experience on a pig farm, game farm, turkey farm and fruit farm! After College I would like to go to Harper Adams University, or first travel to New Zealand to work out there for a year on a dairy farm or in lambing. I’d eventually like to get into a career in genetics, but would love to have my own small holding as well.”

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE Our Shuttleworth College campus has beautiful, spacious outdoor surroundings, perfect for developing skills in outdoor adventurous activities. The study programmes also use external venues such as Grafham Water Sailing Club, Big Rock Climbing Centre and the local footpaths and waterways. You will be involved in a rotation of practical activities on a weekly basis. These will focus on sailing, kayaking, canoeing and climbing. Alongside this you will study a wide range of theoretical and practical units associated with the principles and practices of outdoor adventure, skills development, coaching and leadership. You will have the opportunity to attend residential trips to centres such as Outward Bound in the Lake District and the United Kingdom Sailing Academy on the Isle of Wight. You will also be required to plan and undertake expeditions; in the past these have included canoeing in Snowdonia and mountaineering in the Lake District. The programmes will help you to develop the skills needed within the industry, as well as offering a range of qualifications that will help you progress your career by gaining employment or moving on to higher education. National governing body qualification opportunities include British Canoeing Paddlesport Instructor, RYA Dinghy Instructor and Climbing Wall Award.

Course Highlights You will benefit from the strong industry links the College has with a wide range of outdoor activity providers, which enable us to offer you a diverse selection of work placements both in the UK and across Europe. Past students have also been involved in competing nationally and worldwide for GB squads in canoe slalom and downhill mountain biking, and achieving scholarships as ski instructors.

Outdoor Adventure

“All of the outdoor activities were new to me when I started College. The outdoor industry is so big and will allow me to travel and make a career for myself. I want to progress on to higher education here at College and get as many qualifications as I can, to be the best I can. I’d love to get into tutoring or teaching once I graduate, because my College experience has been so beneficial to me and my tutors have been amazing; I wouldn’t have got the grades I have without their help. The theory work and writing about the industry is my stronger side. We cover everything from health and safety, rules and regulations – such as kit changes – and the history of the various practical activities.”
