Level 3 Computing I feel that studying at Tresham College has helped me gain the knowledge I need for my future. You get more time to focus on your independent study and my computing course has given me a more realistic insight into what a work place would look like in the industry I am interested in. The tutors at the College are so helpful and will always point you in the right direction if you need further help. Studying here has helped me develop my skills and become more confident and comfortable. Following this course I am going on to study Computing for Games at Falmouth University.

I chose to study at Shuttleworth College because of the facilities available. The range of horses gave us a big advantage and the staff were very knowledgeable. The course was varied and covered a wide range of topics which I have been able to take into the industry today. The College provided a fantastic learning environment, enabling me to achieve my full potential.

I chose to study at Bedford College because of the fantastic facilities available and the range of topics that were covered. Studying topics such as nutrition, fitness and coaching gave me an insight into the industry, allowing me to choose the path I wanted to go down. I now work at a Gym and would like to become a personal trainer in the future.

y favourite part of the course was the practical M sessions we got to take part in. From climbing to sailing and canoeing with friends. These sessions set me up for my career in the outdoor industry, gaining practical skills and advanced knowledge.

APPRENTICESHIPS Apprenticeships are a first-class way to start your career. As an apprentice you will gain the knowledge, skills and behaviour requirements needed to obtain the right level of training and competence for a specific job role. We are the largest apprenticeship provider in the South East Midlands which means whatever career path you are interested in we will have an apprenticeship to suit you.

What is an Apprenticeship? An apprenticeship is a programme of work-based learning. To be enrolled as an apprentice, an organisation must have offered you a contract of employment and agreed to pay your wage and support you throughout your training. Your job role must include a range of work relevant to the apprenticeship qualification you wish to undertake.

How long does it take?

90%

of apprentices stay in employment upon completion1

86%

of employers said apprentices developed relevant skills1

80%

of apprentices agreed their chances of progression had increased2

Apprenticeships take between one and four years to complete depending on the type and level undertaken.

How will I spend my time? The part-time study element of an apprenticeship fits around the job commitment, and will be agreed with the employer. You might attend one day per week (day release), in blocks of a week or more (block release), or 100% work-based delivery.

The Benefits

You’ll need enthusiasm and commitment to study and work in a particular industry, but the rewards will be significant: • Get the best of both worlds by earning as you learn • Choose from a wide range of practical trades and jobs • We will help you find an employer from our excellent links with hundreds of top employers • Gain industry-recognised qualifications, Functional Skills and specialist techniques that could see you progress to high-level jobs in your chosen sector • Learn from valuable job experience and time spent developing your skills on a day-to-day basis. 1

What our apprentices say Josh

Engineering Apprentice | Elma Electronics UK Ltd. I’ve always liked learning in a hands-on way rather than in a classroom environment. I design the metal work for the enclosures to customer’s individual specifications. I get given a project to work on and can develop my own ideas but also collaborate with the wider team. I’ve enjoyed every second of my apprenticeship and I’m hoping to stay at Elma for many more years to come. I like how you’re in a more mature environment; you can focus on what you want to do and get the job done. At College, the tutors are very knowledgeable about the industry. I can also speak to other students and hear about their experiences from the companies and industries they are working in.

Jodie

Business Administration Apprentice Biddenham International School I always knew I wanted to get back into studying and even considered going to university. Having completed an apprenticeship back when I was 16, I decided to look at apprenticeships again. I wanted to work in a school because I believe education is important and I enjoy learning about the support teams behind the school that people don’t see. My job role is quite full on so I really enjoy the one day at College as I get to hear about the experiences of my fellow peers and the work is very relevant to what I do. I would like to stay on at Biddenham after my apprenticeship if a full-time role comes up. Alongside this, I’d like to continue my studies and progress up the levels.

BRAND NEW T Levels are a brand new, two year qualification that will give you a head start towards the future you want. T Levels are ideal if you have finished your GCSEs and want the knowledge and experience to get straight into employment, an Apprenticeship or Higher Education. You will spend 80% of your time in the classroom and 20% on a high quality placement with an employer to give you the knowledge and skills companies look for.

CREATED WITH BUSINESS T Levels have been designed with leading businesses and employers to give you the knowledge and skills you need.

QUALIFICATIONS THAT COUNT When you pass your T Level, you will get a nationally recognised certificate showing the overall grade you achieved - Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*. It will also give details of what you learned on the course.

LEARN YOUR WAY T Levels involve more classroom study than apprenticeships, which means you can experience an industry while you continue your studies. Like BTECs and A-Levels, there are no tuition fees to study a T Level if you start before you are 19.

GET AHEAD IN YOUR CAREER T Levels give you the chance to learn what a real career is like while you continue your studies. Your industry placement will last for at least 45 days.

AWARDED UCAS POINTS Your T Level will be worth a number of UCAS points – a T Level Distinction* is worth the same as three A-Levels at A* – and will be recognised by universities and other education providers.

Visit our website to find out more about the T Levels we are offering and how to apply. phone 0345 658 8990

ACCESS TO UNIVERSITY

46

|

www.bedfordcollegegroup.ac.uk

phone 0345 658 8990

Access to Higher Education

Staci

Access to Higher Education (Health & Applied Science)

I like that the course gives you a real insight into what university will be like, in terms of the standard of work and workload. This is particularly important for people like me who have been out of education for a long time. In lessons we learn about the NHS and the Nursing & Midwifery Council, as well as everything to do with the human body, which I find really interesting. After College I am going to the University of Northampton to study an undergraduate Midwifery course for three years.

If you are aged 18 or over without the standard qualifications to enter higher education, these one-year, intensive courses are ideal for you. Our Access courses build the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to progress on to higher education in the subject area you’re interested in. They are recognised by universities across the UK and allow entry on to higher education courses in your chosen specialist area. You will gain a good introduction to your chosen subject, develop your study skills and increase your confidence and ability with this level of study. The course takes one year and, on completion, you will gain an Access to Higher Education Diploma. All pathways will include compulsory English & maths, as well as research skills units. You will also need to have good IT skills as all of your assignments will be carried out using either Word, Excel or PowerPoint. You can undertake IT Skills classes at our Learning Centre, if needed.

Financial Help If you are aged 19 or over, you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to help you pay the tuition fees for this course. Alternatively, you can pay by instalments to help make the cost more affordable. Find out more about your payment options on our website. If you complete one of our Access to Higher Education courses and use an Advanced Learner Loan to pay for your tuition fees, the Student Loans Company will write off the balance on the Advanced Learner Loan if you then go on to complete an undergraduate course. *Terms & Conditions apply; visit our website to find out more.

How to apply If you’re 18 years old or older you may apply and will need to have English Language and maths GCSE at grade 4/C or above, or equivalent Level 2 qualifications, before the start of the course. Entry will also be subject to a successful interview. Successful applicants will be in College for three days per week and will also have to undertake a relevant work placement for up to 150 hours (which is a requirement of some courses). A work placement officer may be able to support you in finding suitable places. You may also have to complete a DBS check.

I visited Shuttleworth College on an Open Day and I couldn’t believe that they had 400 different species all on one campus. Since studying at Shuttleworth, the new biome has opened in the Zoological Education Centre. This houses the reptiles and amphibians and has made a real difference to the student experience.

Others have joined apprenticeship programmes working for the Red Bull F1 team. Our students have been on trips to look at how power stations operate. They also take part in both internal and external competitions with other colleges throughout the year with great prizes on offer. Every year we have local employers contact us to recruit our best students, give talks on what they look for in an individual and give away prizes for the best and most improved student.

I really enjoy the product design aspect of the study programme. In one of our units we have to design and build a robot from VEX kits. We are given a specification to follow but the design is up to us. I much prefer College to school because you are treated as an adult and there is more space and freedom to move around.

I’m really proud of the progress I have made so far at College, having worked up through the levels from Level 1 to Level 3. I love the creative side of the course. We have to make our own resources for the activities to carry out on placement, such as phonics cards for literacy and dice for numeracy. Land & The Environment

I love how hands-on we get to be on the course; we are trusted to be with the cattle and get involved with the lambing, so the environment feels very mature. As I live on-site I am able to pop up to the farm and see where I can help at any time. As we cover machinery, maintenance and livestock on the course, it really prepares you for working in the industry, plus we gain lots of industry contacts through the cattle showing and lambing, even with the local butchers.
