Kempston Campus is served by bus route number 53, stopping just outside the Woburn Road Industrial Estate and running between Bedford town centre and the villages of Marston Moretaine, Cranfield and Wootton. Fish Farm Our Aquatics Centre is filled with diverse species from around the globe, so whether you are interested in advanced fishkeeping or studying conservation on marine corals, we have it covered.

Halls of Residence Our Halls of Residence offer you a stepping stone to living independently in a safe and secure environment, and are particularly useful if your study programme involves you getting up early or finishing late. Priority is given to early applicants and distance from College, so make sure you book early to avoid disappointment! We have: Five residential halls split according to age and gender Single study bedrooms with access to a modern common room complete with kitchen facilities, dining area, comfy chairs, sofas and plasma screen TV Student Services and Warden teams on-site at all times including an out-of-hours warden during the evenings and overnight.

Kingshill Farm Kingshill Farm is our working farm and estate. The farm demonstrates commercial viability whilst also acting as a teaching resource for our Animal Management and Land & Environment students.

Lakes, Reservoirs and Bush Craft We also have an on-site lake and reservoir, bush craft woodland area and open fields.

getting to Shuttleworth College bus We provide a part-subsidised College-run bus service from local towns and villages in the surrounding area depending on demand. In 2020/2021 the cost was £100 per year with a bursary if you had a household income of £30,000 or less and £700 per year for a household income over £30,000. car We are located just off of the A1 with easy access from Biggleswade, Sandy, St Neots, Hitchin and Stevenage, as well as Bedford. There is plenty of free car parking on-site.

Millie Travel & Tourism Destination: Cabin Crew The programme at College helped me figure out what I wanted to do within the industry. The tutors at the College really helped me as they have industry knowledge. I think that the cabin crew unit allowed me to learn the basics of what is was like being a crew member. The tutor of this subject and the fact she had already been crew in the past really helped as she was able to give us real life examples about the job. I was able to build confidence whilst at the College as at times we were pushed outside of our comfort zone with tasks. The College overall really helped me manage my time keeping which is very important being cabin crew and it helped me build my confidence which is what they look for when employing people in industry. Our trip to BA training academy also gave me a real insight to what cabin crew training was like.

Sam Sport & Fitness Destination: Gym Assistant I chose to study at Bedford College because of the fantastic facilities available and the range of topics that were covered. Studying topics such as nutrition, fitness and coaching gave me an insight into the industry, allowing me to choose the path I wanted to go down. Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are a first-class way to start your career. As an apprentice you will gain the knowledge, skills and behaviour requirements needed to obtain the right level of training and competence for a specific job role. We are the largest apprenticeship provider in the South East Midlands which means whatever career path you are interested in we will have an apprenticeship to suit you.

What is an Apprenticeship? An apprenticeship is a programme of work-based learning. To be enrolled as an apprentice, an organisation must have offered you a contract of employment and agreed to pay your wage and support you throughout your training. Your job role must include a range of work relevant to the apprenticeship qualification you wish to undertake.

How long does it take? Apprenticeships take between one and four years to complete depending on the type and level undertaken.

How will I spend my time? The part-time study element of an apprenticeship fits around the job commitment, and will be agreed with the employer. You might attend one day per week (day release), in blocks of a week or more (block release), or 100% work-based delivery.

What are T Levels T Levels are a brand new, two-year qualification that will give you a head start towards the future you want. T Levels are ideal if you have finished your GCSEs and want the knowledge and experience to get straight into employment, an Apprenticeship or Higher Education. You will spend 80% of your time in the classroom and 20% on a high quality placement with an employer to give you the knowledge and skills companies look for.

Access to Higher Education (Health & Applied Science) I like that the course gives you a real insight into what university will be like, in terms of the standard of work and workload. This is particularly important for people like me who have been out of education for a long time. In lessons we learn about the NHS and the Nursing & Midwifery Council, as well as everything to do with the human body, which I find really interesting. After College I am going to the University of Northampton to study an undergraduate Midwifery course for three years.

If you are aged 18 or over without the standard qualifications to enter higher education, these one-year, intensive courses are ideal for you.

Financial Help

Our Access courses build the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to progress on to higher education in the subject area you’re interested in. They are recognised by universities across the UK and allow entry on to higher education courses in your chosen specialist area.

If you complete one of our Access to Higher Education courses and use an Advanced Learner Loan to pay for your tuition fees, the Student Loans Company will write off the balance on the Advanced Learner Loan if you then go on to complete an undergraduate course. *Terms & Conditions apply; visit our website to find out more.

You will gain a good introduction to your chosen subject, develop your study skills and increase your confidence and ability with this level of study. The course takes one year and, on completion, you will gain an Access to Higher Education Diploma. All pathways will include compulsory English and maths, as well as research skills units. You will also need to have good IT skills as all of your assignments will be carried out using either Word, Excel or PowerPoint. You can undertake IT Skills classes at our Learning Centre, if needed.

If you are aged 19 or over, you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to help you pay the tuition fees for this course. Alternatively, you can pay by instalments to help make the cost more affordable. Find out more about your payment options on our website.

How to apply If you’re 18 years old or older you may apply and will need to have English Language and maths GCSE at grade 4/C or above, or equivalent Level 2 qualifications, before the start of the course. Entry will also be subject to a successful interview. Successful applicants will be in College for three days per week and will also have to undertake a relevant work placement for up to 150 hours (which is a requirement of some courses). A work placement officer may be able to support you in finding suitable places. You may also have to complete a DBS check.

Alex Animal Management Level 3 Previous School: In London I visited Shuttleworth College on an Open Day and I couldn’t believe that they had 400 different species all on one campus. electrical installation Introduction Our Study Programmes Our Electrical Installation study programmes enable you to access a range of electrical career paths.

Our students have gone on to work for major electrical contractors on some very exciting projects including The Shard, Crossrail and Heathrow Airport. Others have joined apprenticeship programmes working for the Red Bull F1 team. Our students have been on trips to look at how power stations operate. They also take part in both internal and external competitions with other colleges throughout the year with great prizes on offer. Every year we have local employers contact us to recruit our best students, give talks on what they look for in an individual and give away prizes for the best and most improved student. Equine management Introduction Our Equine Care and Management study programmes at Shuttleworth College enable you to develop the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to pursue a successful career working with horses. Our fantastic equine facilities at Mount Pleasant are equipped with covered stabling, two indoor arenas, classrooms and a student rest room. You can take advantage of tuition in riding, as well as all aspects of equine care and management. Alongside practical skills, you will develop your knowledge in areas such as equine health and welfare, equine feeding and nutrition, and the anatomy and physiology of horses. Guest speakers often visit Mount Pleasant to give lectures and demonstrations, which complement the clinics and events held at the College. FOUNDATION LEARNING Introduction Our Foundation Skills Programme is aimed at young people with identified learning difficulties and/ or disabilities. The programme will help you to develop your study and personal skills for progression on to higher level programmes at the College, or to get into a job role. motor vehicle Introduction Our We offer a unique opportunity to gain qualifications and experience in vehicle body repair, vehicle paint and vehicle maintenance.

All of our tutors have worked in the automotive industry in a variety of roles, often being leaders in their chosen specialisms. Using their experiences and engineering backgrounds, they build a multitude of portable practical resources to better engage students in the classroom. Our students also benefit from professional links with the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) as well as major employers in the area to keep abreast of changes. Some of these have donated who have a number of ex-trial vehicles to us, to help students test their diagnostic skills on the very latest technology. A number of our students move on to apprenticeships after their course; some with Vauxhall, where they have had great experiences, from being a member of a pit crew on the annual VXR Power Event, to servicing and preparing an ambulance for a 10,000 mile charity drive to Mongolia. National College for Motorsport Introduction Training the race technicians of the future The Bedford College Group is proud to offer motorsport technician training at our National College for Motorsport based at the Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire, where students are taught by highly-skilled tutors, experienced in many areas of the motorsport industry. We are the first college in the UK to achieve the Motorsport Academy Employer Recognition Scheme Charter Mark for our training for race technicians. The scheme was introduced in 2007 to ensure that training providers deliver quality, industry-relevant training. In January 2018 we were awarded the Motorsport Industry Association ‘Service to Industry Award’ for our exceptional performance in training and guiding young people into Race Technicians apprenticeships. You will be given the opportunity to work at tests and races with the College and our motorsport partners.

outdoor adventure Introduction Our Shuttleworth College campus has beautiful, spacious outdoor surroundings, perfect for developing skills in outdoor adventurous activities. The study programmes also use external venues such as Grafham Water Sailing Club, Big Rock Climbing Centre and the local footpaths and waterways. You will be involved in a rotation of practical activities on a weekly basis. These will focus on sailing, kayaking, canoeing and climbing. Alongside this you will study a wide range of theoretical and practical units associated with the principles and practices of outdoor adventure, skills development, coaching and leadership. You will have the opportunity to attend residential trips to centres such as Outward Bound in the Lake District and the United Kingdom Sailing Academy on the Isle of Wight. You will also be required to plan and undertake expeditions; in the past these have included canoeing in Snowdonia and mountaineering in the Lake District. The programmes will help you to develop the skills needed within the industry, as well as offering a range of qualifications that will help you progress your career by gaining employment or moving on to higher education. 216

Tresham Football Academy is the current National Champion and the students compete at the highest level of college football, the AoC Sport Premier League and regional and national cup competitions.

BOYS FOOTBALL ACADEMY Coaches are FA & UEFA licensed and former professionals lead sessions. Our football students have gone on to gain professional contracts and American scholarships. • T he Boys’ Football Academy first Team were crowned National College Champions in 2019 having won the Association of Colleges National Football Championship. • T he Boys’ Football Academy were also crowned regional college champions, reached the quarter finals of the National Premier Cup and reached the semi-finals of the National College Premier Playoffs.

VOLLEYBALL ACADEMY Over recent years the popularity and success of the Volleyball Academy has been a special part of what we offer at Tresham, this led to the Volleyball Academy launching in September 2021. Learners who sign up to the Volleyball Academy get the opportunity to train between 2/3 times a week (subject to fixtures) and we compete on many fronts in the Male, Female and Mixed National Cup alongside the East Midlands Volleyball league. Training sessions include a focus on technical and tactical development alongside physical conditioning specific to Volleyball in a supportive and positive environment, with home fixtures being played at the National Volleyball Centre. In recent years our players have had some tremendous experiences including: • Participating against touring teams from Argentina • Competing at Regional and National tournaments Our Men’s team became Regional champions in 2019-20 and the Women finishing 7th at the AoC Sport National Championships in 2018-19.

GIRLS FOOTBALL ACADEMY • T he Girls’ Football Academy finished as league runners up, third in the regional college championships, and reached the last 32 of the National Cup. • 2 4 students represented the College at the National College Championships. 60 students represented the College at regional championships.

RUGBY ACADEMY The Rugby Academy competes in AOC National Leagues and regional competitions and is coached by expert former professionals. With access to great facilities, high-level coaching, experienced teaching staff and fitness support, Tresham Academy of Sport aims to provide an elite sporting experience and push you to achieve your goals. They have gone on to become cabin crew, holiday reps, ground staff and check in staff for British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Swissport and Signature Aviation, to name a few! Our residential trips have previously included Dubai, Marbella and Gibraltar, cruising from Hull to the Netherlands, Malta, Dublin and Edinburgh. uniformed public services Introduction Studying Uniformed Public Services will help you to develop the skills, fitness and determination to put yourself ahead of the rest, with career paths that include the Armed Forces, Emergency Services, the Prison Service and many more.

Tutors have experience in public service roles in the armed forces and emergency services, which give an extra dimension to lessons and will enable you to draw on their vocational experience. As a student, you will have opportunities to visit and train with the RAF, Army and Fire Service. Recent visits have included expeditions to the Lake District and The Peak District and work experience with the British Army, participating in fieldcraft and military exercises. We have close links with Bedfordshire Police where we have worked on a number of initiatives with them, as well as organising volunteering projects for the British Legion. What could I do next?

This study programme will give you the opportunity to develop skills and experiences that will help you to pursue a career in the uniformed public services, and is designed for those who wish, for example, to join the armed forces, emergency services or prison service. You will cover topics that build upon your knowledge and personal development to help prepare you for applying to join a uniformed service. During your studies you will take part in a wide range of activities to aid your learning, such as outdoor pursuits, fitness training and team-building events.

You can progress to a range of job roles within the public services or pursue further study at university.
