Cherry Red Records Premier Challenge Cup – Semi-Final Tuesday 9th April 2019 – Kick-Off: 7.45pm Volume 6, Issue 22

Good evening everyone and welcome to The Orchard for this Cherry Red Records Premier Challenge Cup semi-final match against Sutton Common Rovers.

We offer a special welcome to the officials, players and supporters of ‘The Commoners’. We hope they have an enjoyable evening of football and then have a safe journey home following the match. This welcome is also extended to the match officials. We please ask that you respect them both on and off the field of play. Without match officials, we have no match.

Our last home match was on Saturday 23rd March which saw Farnham Town beat us by four goals to two. Michael Capon and Elliott Hayden were the scorers that day. Saturday 30th March saw us draw 0-0 at Fleet Spurs. David Windmill saved the day for us by performing some incredible saves.

Last Saturday saw us lose 1-3 at Ash United. Farhad Mahboudi was our goal scorer. There have been a few changes to the squad of late, and Reece Gairy is still out due to a nasty injury from a few weeks ago.

Our visitors, Sutton Common Rovers are second in the Premier Division and lost 3-4 to Guildford City on Saturday.

They have 3 more league matches left to play and are a point behind leaders Chertsey who have an incredible 9 league matches left to play – due to them reaching the final of the Buildbase FA Vase.

Sutton Common Rovers beat Hanworth Villa 3-0 last week in the quarter-final of the Premier Challenge Cup at Gander Green Lane. The winners of tonight’s match will play Abbey Rangers on Saturday 11th May at Windsor FC’s ground.

We’re back in action on Saturday, as we host Epsom & Ewell in our final home match of the season. Our Sunday side are playing Highgate Albion 3rds in the final of the Middlesex FA Sunday Junior Trophy on Sunday 14th at Rectory Park, Northolt (see further inside for details); then we play Farnham Town away on Saturday 20th, and Kensington Borough away on Saturday 27th.

This Day in Football History 9 April 1938 You Know, I Think It's Going To Catch On

On 9 April 1938, England hosted Scotland at Wembley for the first match to be shown live on television in its entirety.

The BBC expanded from radio into television in 1936. But for the first several months, the only football they showed included a recording of Arsenal's 1936-37 season opener against Everton and a short live exhibition in September 1937 between Arsenal's first team and reserves.

For their first full live match, the BBC chose the final game of the 1938 British Home Championship, played at Wembley Stadium. The outcome was irrelevant, as England had already taken the honours; their wins over Ireland and Wales left them with four points, while Scotland had managed only a single point after a draw with Ireland and a loss to Wales (those other two teams had ended their campaigns three weeks earlier and were behind England in the standings).

Nevertheless, a packed house turned out for the match and saw Scotland take an early lead with a strike from inside forward Tommy Walker, which turned out to be the only goal of the day.

Live broadcasts continued, with the next one being the FA Cup Final between Huddersfield Town and Preston North End the following month.

Introducing our Visitors – Sutton Common Rovers Chairman and Life President Alan Salmon founded SCR F.C in 1978, when the club began life as INRAD FC, based in Carshalton. The club entered a new era when Alan moved to Sutton and arranged sponsorship with his new neighbour, CENTRE 21 FC was born. This era saw the club running one Saturday side, three Sunday sides and three Youth sides. Centre 21's sponsorship continued until the club's youth players were no longer under 21 years old.

The club again sought a new identity, SUTTON COMMON ROAD FC was formed and subsequently abbreviated to SCR FC. Since then the club has had five major sponsors whose names have been incorporated into the clubs affiliated name: SCR PLOUGH (twice), SCR GRAPES, next the club's longest sponsor SCR LITTEN TREE (7 years) & finally SCR Kingfisher, Ewell with whom we started our venture in Saturday football in 2004/05.

It was at this point that the club took the decision to revert back to using the SCR name alone, feeling that as we strive for continued promotion, we needed to disassociate ourselves with the whole ‘pub team’ image. The club however did take sponsorship form the Fox & Hounds, Carshalton for the Sat first team in 2006/07, but the decision was made that the pub name would not be incorporated into our own, for the above reason…

The club entered yet another new era this season, with the introduction of a third Saturday side (Messers Alex Avis & Tony Williams) and the 1’s moving to the Middlesex County FL (and a name change SUTTON COMMON ROVERS) in the pursuit of combined Counties football, having made an unsuccessful application from the Surrey South Eastern Combination at the end of season 2006/07 having finished joint top (3rd on goal difference… -1 goal) A third-place finish in the Middlesex County League Premier division in 07/08 meant that our promotion to the CCL was not assured but months of hard work & determination from the management team SCR eventually secured a place for the clubs 1st time in their 30 year history at the league AGM in June 2008 and the reserves moved into the CCL reserve division under the guidance of Alex Avis & Justin Salmon.

Season 08/09 saw the latest name change of the club, to form MOLE VALLEY SCR FC reflecting the area in which we played. Season 09/10 saw the club reach a Surrey Cup final, narrowly being defeated by Sutton United after a 1-1 extra time score line on penalties and in the same season compete in the FA Vase for the first time in our relatively short history. We finished Champions of Division One at the second time of asking, narrowly piping Worcester Park to the post in a fine run which saw us finish 3 points clear on the final match of the season, assuming as we believed, we were awarded the points from the postponed Coulsdon match who unfortunately were unable to field a side for our scheduled league game some weeks earlier.

The following season saw the club play at our highest level to date, and make our FA Cup debut, although this lasted just one game, and ended in a 5-0 defeat against Chertsey Town. The club managed two seasons in the Premier Division, before being relegated back to Division 1, following a start to the season that saw 12 straight league defeats. The 2012/13 season started with a rebuilt side and expectations of consolidation, however a 20-game unbeaten run propelled us into runners up spot, and a much-coveted promotion back to the Premier Division.

2013/14 started brightly, but went to the last game, and a point saw survival. It was the same last season, and although we lost, we still managed to survive. For the 2015/16 season, there has been a change of name to Sutton Common Rovers, and after much hard work by the Salmons, a return to Sutton, and a ground share with Sutton Utd. 2016/17 saw a 12th place league finish and the capture of the Southern Combination Cup. The following season, 2017/18 we recorded our highest ever placing, finishing 3rd in the Premier Division, and reached the semi-final of both the Southern Combination Cup and the EL Records Premier Challenge Cup.

Sutton Common Rovers Player Profiles: Ollie Ellaway (20) - GOALKEEPER - captain of the U21's last season and stepped in to the first team whenever required, and always performed well. Great hands, a solid shot-stopper and kicks the ball miles. Previously with Raynes Park Vale, and had some time on loan with Banstead Athletic last season.

Craig Bradshaw (33) - GOALKEEPER - vastly experienced goalkeeper who is now in his second spell with the club.

Great hands and a big imposing presence. Delivery from dead ball is excellent, and has three goals to his name (none for us, but one against us!).

Aaron Bogle (29) - DEFENDER - club captain, and leads the side by example. Not the most technically gifted, but wholehearted, strong in the tackle, and reads the game better than most defenders in the division. Converted from a right back to a hugely influential centre-back. If you had eleven of him in your side you wouldn't lose many games although to be fair you wouldn't score many, as he is still waiting for that first goal in over 160 appearances Malachi Robinson – (22) - DEFENDER - pacy full back, who is strong in the challenge, and has a good range of passing. Played one game for the club last season, away at Guildford City, but has returned this year and looks a strong addition. Formerly with Corinthian Casuals Craig Hastings (32) - DEFENDER - Veteran defender who is starting to wind down his career. Dominant aerially, and deceptively quick. A real good influence over the younger members of the squad. Has chipped in with the occasional vital goal. Former clubs include Epsom & Ewell.

Guy Baskerville (19) - CENTRE BACK - young central defender Guy comes to us after a spell at Bromley, where he made first team appearances in the Kent Senior Cup and FA Cup qualifying, and most latterly Farleigh Rovers. A composed, strong defender who impressed senior players so much in our trials they were heard to say "whatever you do, get him" Matt Tanton (24) - DEFENDER - Rapid, and reads the game superbly. Loves to get forward and often delivers a wicked cross. Career started slowly with us as his undeniable talent failed to come out in his first month. However, since September 2017 has been probably our most consistent player. Another of those who has previously seen time with Epsom & Ewell.

Matt Farrell (29) - MIDFIELD - Last season's joint Players Player of the Year, Matt is an all action box to box midfielder, who is equally happy breaking up opponents attacks or creating things going the other way. Chipped in with a few important goals last season, including the first of the season against Canterbury in the FA Cup. Played more games than anyone else. Previous clubs include Epsom & Ewell and Corinthian Casuals Adam Allen (25) – MIDFIELD – glides effortlessly over the pitch, and on his day the best player in the Combined Counties league. First came to club’s attention when playing for Beckenham Town, but soon realised the error of his ways and moved to SCR. Very pacey and has chipped in with some important goals. Currently recovering from a dislocated knee sustained against AFC Hayes.

Asa Rixon-Nicholls (30) – MIDFIELD – our own version of the Ninja Warrior, with one exception, our “Ginger” Warrior has the heart of lion, and is a true leader. Now up to 124 appearances. Has been known to limp onto the pitch on a Saturday, limp off at full time, play for the Sunday side, and then repeat the process for the firsts on the Monday.

Ben Senior – (19) - MIDFIELD - teenage midfielder who has forced himself into the first team squad after several good performances for the U23's. Good on the ball, with an eye for goal, and good pace. Made his debut in the 4-2 win over Walton & Hersham. Formerly with South Park.

Ollie Twum (19) - WINGER - Previously played for Chipstead where despite his young age he was regularly involved in the first team squad. Pace to burn, and an eye for goal Ollie looks to have an outstanding future in the game.

Phil Page – (31) - FORWARD - recently returned to football having spent a time away from the game. Prolific goalscorer who has an over a goal per game record for the club (86 in 83), strong, quick and with a rocket shot. A great addition to the club Marlon Pinder – (21) – FORWARD – in his second spell with us after a brief unsuccessful three games in 2016. A completely different player now, powerful, hard-working and a real team player. Scored his first for the club in the Vase against Horley Town.

Aidan Brown – (22) – FORWARD – lively forward recently signed from Corinthian Casuals. Good movement and an excellent eye for goal.

Meet The Team: David Windmill Age: 24 Position: Goalkeeper.

Fun fact: David represented England through U13-U17 at 5-aside. He gave this up to play Badminton semi-professionally, before going to University at Oxford. Smart and good looking, what a bloke.

We get to know a little more about David…

What is your favourite football memory?

Russia 2018 World Cup. What a summer great weather and great football, almost had a heart attack during the Colombia penalties.

Best player you’ve ever played with? At CB I played with called Mike Moneke. He played like a lower league Nemanja Vidic, was absolutely mental.

Best team you’ve ever been a part of apart from this current Bedfont squad (obviously)? My uni team in my final year.

Should have won more but that team had some unbelievable players. Topped of the season with a varsity win.

Who would you not want a scrap with in the squad? Farhad Mahboudi. Lovely guy but once his head goes... Constantly testing out his ground game with unsuspecting teammates during training.

Most likely to be a future Gaffer? Charlie Dunckley. He doesn't stop talking on the pitch, and if he stays this broad while coaching none of the players would talk back to him.

Quickfire round:

Slowest in the squad? Steve. Sorry mate but you've got the turning circle of a combine harvester...

Blonde or Brunette? (Left it blank so we can only assume whatever he can get his hands on)

Biggest moaner in the team? Ash. Seems like he's stepped up to the role now his best mate's gone.

John Nunn. I've never seen someone put so much effort into meaningless small-sided games; imagine what it would be like if the game mattered.

Bedfont & Feltham FC History: Bedfont & Feltham Football Club was founded in May 2012 following the amalgamation of Feltham FC and Bedfont Football and Social Club, taking Feltham's place in Division One of the Combined Counties Football League.

Feltham had already entered the 2012–13 FA Vase under their own name so the club played as Feltham FC until the start of the 2013–14 season. Two Sunday sides played in the West Middlesex Sunday Football League under the Bedfont & Feltham name; one finishing second in Division One and the other winning Division Two. The Yellows' first two seasons saw them finish in a respectable fifth place in the Division One table having been early frontrunners. They reached the First Round Proper of the FA Vase in 2013-14 and also won the Middlesex Premier Cup. The club became eligible to compete in the FA Cup for the first time in 2014-15, and reached the First Round Qualifying. The same season also saw the club win the Division One Challenge Cup and become runners-up in the Southern Combination Challenge Cup competition.

For season 2015-16, the club restructured its squad and Youth set-up. The club started strongly and for the second time in its short history made the First Round Qualifying in the FA Cup and the FA Vase competitions. This season saw the Yellows finish as runners-up in Division One, earning promotion to the Premier Division of the Combined Counties Football League. The club also reached the final of the RPM Records Division One Challenge Cup for the second consecutive season.

The Premier Division experience in 2016-17 started tough with a 2-9 home defeat to Epsom & Ewell on the opening day of the season. This seemed to pave the way for the

club’s worst season since its formation: Finishing second from bottom in the Combined Counties Football League’s Premier Division. This resulted in relegation back to Division One. The club was knocked out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle and of the FA Vase at the second. On a brighter note, they reached the semi-finals of the Southern Combination Challenge Cup and the quarter-finals of the Middlesex FA Senior Charity Cup having unceremoniously exited all other cup competitions in earlier rounds. This prompted the club to appoint Garry Haylock as Manager in late April 2017.

Life back in Division One in season 2017-18 started very poorly and in consequence, Garry Haylock departed in October 2017 to be replaced by Dan Huxley. The poor run experienced in 2016-17 continued, with the club exiting the FA Cup and FA Vase competitions in the opening rounds. The club reached the Quarter-Finals of the Middlesex Premier Cup; Third Round of the Division One Challenge Cup; Second Round of the Middlesex Charity Cup and Second Round of the Southern Combination Challenge Cup. The squad saw a number of changes throughout the season and found it difficult to bond. This resulted in a bottom four finish.

Dan Huxley announced his resignation at the end of the season.

The club quickly appointed former Staines Lammas manager Adam Bessent. He will attempt to arrest the mediocrity that has dogged the club since relegation two seasons ago.

The Club has retained the FA Charter Standard and is now in its sixth season. The current set-up sees a revived Sunday side and Youth teams from Under 7s to Under 10s.

Non-League Paper Column by Matt Badcock YOU HAVE to wonder how we will be reading football programmes in the next five years. Will we even be reading them at all?

Change and progression is vital for the future health of the game but there are many aspects that will leave traditionalists misty-eyed recalling how things used to be.

Programmes have long seemed under threat and with more leagues – including the EFL – giving clubs the option to produce one or not, there is a gradual decline.

A way of clubs putting out their own news, interviews with players and managers’ notes, they’ve always been an ideal way of interacting with the fanbase. Not to mention the sponsors being able to put their product in front of people on a weekly basis.

By many accounts, sales are falling and combined with the increasing in costs, you can understand why clubs are exploring other options or dropping them altogether.

When Football League clubs have voted on a decision to stop them being mandatory, it can be expected to filter down.

Perhaps programmes will become increasingly digital. Clubs across the country and even the world are already experimenting with online editions, the use of QR codes on tickets to bring the latest copy direct to your phone, it will be fascinating to see how they evolve.

But there’s always been something special about the hard copy that you

can touch, roll up into a pocket and browse at half-time or on the train home from a game.

Lovingly put together by programme editors giving up their spare hours to produce a product they are proud of.

It’s easy to underestimate how much time goes in each week to programmes, the hours of writing, liaising with the opposition and carefully proof-reading for errors.

Perhaps I’m one of the dying breed who still enjoys seeing what clubs can produce. We must not forget how demanding it is for volunteers in NonLeague to put all this together, let alone when the weather hits and scuppers all that hard work.

It will be interesting to hear your thoughts. The fact you are reading this weekly programme column sent out by The NLP, hopefully shows programmes will be around for a while yet.

Introducing Sideburn Bob - The People's Champion Since 1974 #sideburnbob has been gracing Non-League football programmes either as a front cover or inside a programme for various advertising, as far as I am aware he was first spotted in the 1974 Derby County  Ram Boutique advert and thereafter in other various League Club programmes first appearing on the 1976 Kilmarnock programme as a front cover, from there on in fronting 100s of non-league programmes with his glory years being 1980's & 90s.

The mystery of exactly where Bob came from continues. Tony Williams who many of you will know from his Non-League publications wrote in the non league grounds of Great Britain that he had first spotted Bob in a 1950s football magazine and had pasted him into a scrapbook.

Doubt remains on this siting as nothing was ever spotted again for over 20 years until the Ram Boutique advert. Popular suggestion is he is in fact clipart which is more plausible as Bob looks like a 70s character and famous footballer Malcolm MacDonald with his ever present partner looking like Rodney Bewes from the Likely Lads which older readers will have fond memories of. So, why do I love this character? Well simply because it brings back memories of programmes collected throughout the years. He is  an iconic figure for me - some of my first memories of attending games within Non-League.

Throughout the 2017-18 season, there were many clubs surprisingly interested in issuing programmes with the iconic image either on the front cover or within the programme itself.

Prolific issuers were Portland United, Sholing Sports and Bedfont & Feltham and big thanks goes to those 3 programme editors - and of course, to all the other editors that issued. #sideburnbob the People's Champion will continue to be an iconic figure for me and the search is on for his history and collecting programmes.
