H.A.B. Dunning Award

Remington Honor Medal

The Remington Honor Medal, named for eminent community pharmacist, manufacturer, and educator Joseph P. Remington (1847–1918), was established in 1918 to recognize distinguished service on behalf of American pharmacy during the preceding years, culminating in the past year, or during a long period of outstanding activity or fruitful achievement.

Hugo H. Schaefer Award Baeteena M. Black, DPh The Hugo H. Schaefer Award was established by the American Pharmacists Association in 1964 to honor the long-time APhA Treasurer, Dr. Hugo H. Schaefer, for a lifetime of contributions to the profession of pharmacy and in particular for his service to APhA. The purpose of the award is to recognize an individual who has made outstanding voluntary contributions to society as well as to the profession of pharmacy and APhA.

Hubert H. Humphrey Award Brian J. Isetts, BSPharm, PhD, BCPS, FAPhA The Hubert H. Humphrey Award was established in 1978 to recognize APhA members who have made major contributions in government and/or legislative service at the local, state, or national level.

Dunning Award recognizes an exemplary contribution to the practice of pharmacy by a pharmaceutical manufacturer or provider of support products or services, or other entities such as wholesalers, chain corporations, etc. The award is named for Henry Armitt Brown Dunning (1877–1962), former chair of the board of Hynson, Westcott, and Dunning, who, as a longstanding APhA leader, was instrumental in the funding and building of the APhA headquarters in Washington, DC.

The Research Achievement Award in the Pharmaceutical Sciences recognizes outstanding meritorious achievement in any of the pharmaceutical sciences. Contributions to be recognized are in the areas of basic pharmaceutical, clinical, and economic, social, and administrative sciences, which develop knowledge and integrate the process of science into the profession of pharmacy. The award rotates each among the three APhA-APRS Sections, and in 2015, the award recognized contributions in the area of economic, social, and administrative sciences.

Ebert Prize Vivian Bi, MD, MS for the paper, “Development of a human antibody tolerant mouse model to assess the immunogenicity risk due to aggregated biotherapeutics,” published with Vibha Jawa, Marisa K. Joubert, Arunan Kaliyaperumal, Catherine Eakin, Karen Richmond, Oscar Pan, Jilin Sun, Martha Hokom, Theresa J. Goletz, Jette Wypych, Lei Zhou, Bruce A. Kerwin, Linda O. Narhi, and Taruna Arora.

The Ebert Prize, administered by APhA–APRS, was established in 1873.

It recognizes the author(s) of the best report of original investigation of a medicinal substance published in the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the past year. Both the Editorial Advisory Board of the journal and the APhA–APRS Awards Committee participate in the selection process.

Wiederholt Prize David A. Holdford, BSPharm, MS, PhD, FAPhA for the paper, “Adherence and persistence associated with an appointment-based medication synchronization program,” published with Timothy J. Inocencio.

This award was established in 1996 as the APhA Best Published Paper Award for Economic, Social, and Administrative Sciences. In 2002, it was renamed the Wiederholt Prize in honor of Joseph B. Wiederholt, PhD (1949–2001), the first recipient of the award and a professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. The purpose of the award is to recognize the best paper published within the past 2 calendar years in the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association (JAPhA), describing original investigation in the areas of economic, social, or administrative sciences.

Lourdes G. Planas, BSPharm, PhD, for the paper, “Evaluation of a diabetes management program using selected HEDIS measures,” published with Kimberly M. Crosby, PharmD, BCPS, CGP, CDE, BC-ADM; Kevin C. Farmer, PhD; and Donald L. Harrison, PhD. Linwood F. Tice Friend of APhA Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA–ASP) Award Donald G. Floriddia, PhD, FASCP, FAPhA Formerly known as the “APhA Friend of ASP Award,” this award was established in 1988 to recognize an individual whose long-term services and contributions have benefited APhA–ASP, and thereby student pharmacists in general. The award was renamed in 1994 to honor Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Dean Emeritus and APhA Past President Dr. Linwood F. Tice who, in his capacity as Chair of the APhA Committee on Student Branches in 1952–1955, was instrumental in the formation of the APhA organizational unit that evolved into APhA–ASP.

Good Government Student Pharmacist-of-the-Year Award Sarah M. Barden The award, established in 2004, recognizes a student pharmacist who successfully organizes student pharmacist grassroots activity within their chapter and actively promotes the value of advocating for the profession. The award, is based on the student’s ability to raise awareness of local and national pharmacy issues while embracing the concept of teamwork and collaboration among students, practitioners, and their state pharmacy association.

2014 APhA Treasurer’s report

On behalf of the APhA Finance Committee I am pleased to report that APhA posted its eighteenth consecutive annual operating surplus in 2014. Despite lingering economic challenges, APhA’s revenue grew by two percent to $35.1 million resulting in a net surplus from operations of $287,776. In addition, our building operations provided over seven hundred thousand dollars of funding for initiatives in support of APhA’s strategic plan; $647,122 for the provider status initiative and $79,639 for other strategic initiatives that support the pharmacy profession. The balance sheet of APhA remains strong with $30.2 million in total assets and $15.8 million in net assets at December 31, 2014. We continue to manage and use our resources in a way that provides benefits to our members and helps us expand the role of pharmacists as health care providers so that patients will have the benefit of and access to our services.
