It was at the start of last summer that I began to paint my first painting for this seventh solo exhibition. Spring saw me collate the long list of sketches and ideas I had been gathering to form a collection of the strongest ideas for the show.

the landing

The journey’s end for me is when the fifth layer of protective varnish is dry, the paintings are framed, wrapped and sealed and are lovingly picked up and taken to the gallery. They then leave to start their own adventure with somebody new.

The creative process for me can be broken down into three parts of a rocket ship ride - the take off, the journey and the landing.

The take off is the initial idea, that tiny special moment in time, like the instant and explosive energy of a match being lit. Once you then have that flame alight, you need to nurse and cajole it, to encourage it to catch the fuel and develop the idea.

The second part lies in the journey, once the rocket ship is on its way. This takes the form of the daily routine and discipline of being at the easel painting. I imagine a journey to a far flung planet would be both a peaceful process but one which needs constant concentration.

And then, step by step, almost without noticing, the paintings near completion and the landing appears on the horizon.

I enjoy all these stages of being an artist. The feeling of being very blessed to be able to paint full time only increases with each year that passes.

THERE ARE FEW THINGS THAT GIVE US MORE PLEASURE AT BECKSTONES THAN THE MUCH ANTICIPATED BIG REVEAL OF ANDREW TALBOT’S LATEST COLLECTION. We are teased for months with ideas and potential titles and can only imagine how the resulting paintings will be. The build up is such that it is almost impossible for Andrew to live up to our lofty expectations but he never disappoints. This time he has truly eclipsed any notions we might have had with this incredible collection of new paintings.

Quite where Andrew gets his inspiration is a mystery to us mere mortals, but his ability to create something quite extraordinary from something everyday is remarkable. His beautiful paintings are not only brilliantly executed but the choice of subject matter is absolutely irresistible, a lethal combination for his army of collectors who have been known to camp out in our car park to acquire their chosen painting.

Andrew possesses a rare ability to paint a wide array of subjects including interiors, still life and animals to the very highest of standards, and his quirky series of paintings featuring boys’ toys and dinky cars have become iconic.

Andrew was born in 1972 and grew up in the Ribble Valley. He painted his first oil painting at the age of 15 and went on to study at Loughborough College of Art where he graduated with a degree in Fine Art (Painting). Andrew has exhibited at Beckstones since 2001 and has never looked back since turning professional in 2002. His highly sought after paintings are always in short supply and he has many collectors all over the world.

Andrew shares a studio with his wife Susie who makes designer handbags and they live in Lancashire with their two children Grace and Tom.
