HISTORY

Purchasing your child’s first school backpack is a huge event! As a parent, you want to ensure that your child has a backpack with excellent carrying comfort and useful features - a backpack that is visible, durable and one that your child loves! For 77 years, we at Beckmann have taken this matter extremely seriously. We are immensely grateful for every school day we have been a part of! A thousand thanks to all of our retailers, for helping us to continue on this incredible journey.

We find it fun to look back on how our backpacks used to look in the past. We hope you enjoy it too!

Today, Beckmann is Scandinavia’s leading school backpack brand. Our headquarters are located in Norway, but our backpacks are sold in approximately 25 countries all over the globe. This is something we are very proud of! Different countries have different cultures, education systems, and school routes - but the need and desire for an ergonomic school backpack that brings joy to children exists across all markets. Recommended by experts

We have a long tradition of collaborating with experts to ensure that our backpacks have the best ergonomic design. Today, our backpacks are being developed and tested in collaboration with chiropractor Dr. Philip J. Wilkens, who has a doctorate in lumbar spine pain.

Our goal is to produce the world’s best school backpacks, and there are few things we value more than international recommendations that confirm our school backpacks as the most ergonomic ones children can use.

Our goal is to produce the world’s best school backpacks, and there are few things we value more than international recommendations that confirm our school backpacks as the most ergonomic ones children can use.

Have a couple of books handy that can be placed inside when the child is trying out the backpack.

Put on the hip belt (the hips should carry the weight). The bottom part of the belt should sit on the hip bone.

Adjust the shoulder straps until the backpack rests just above the buttocks.

Close the chest strap. Adjust it until it sits a few centimeters above the armpits. Make sure that the arms can swing back and forth without hitting the backpack.

Tighten the top straps. Let the child move around freely whilst wearing the backpack. Can they walk/run without their arms hitting the backpack? Does the backpack fit tightly on the back, particularly in the shoulder and hip area?

LABORATORY TESTS OF BACKPACKS

To be innovative, you have to dare to try new things! We know that we produce good backpacks, but is there still room for improvement? In collaboration with NORCE Research (norceresearch.no) and with the support of the Research Council in Norway, we have tested school backpacks using pressure sensors and robots. We wanted to find out how the backpacks distribute weight across the shoulders, back and hips, along with the effects of the various ergonomic features of the backpacks. Read more about the results from the tests on page 29.

This year, we have teamed up with Norrøna, a well-known Norwegian outdoor clothing and equipment brand, to investigate together what makes a backpack comfortable to carry. Our goal is to develop a standardized test method for backpack ergonomics to ensure that children and adults receive the best possible carrying comfort.

WE CARE ABOUT MORE THAN JUST YOUR BACK!

The best way to reduce the environmental footprint of the products we buy and use is to choose high-quality and durable products while also taking good care of them. With over 75 years of experience in making school backpacks, we know what a backpack goes through and the wear and tear it is subjected to.

It is important for us to assure you that our backpacks are manufactured according to strict quality standards and undergo inspections and follow-ups in accordance with these standards before they end up on your back. Therefore, we can confidently provide a warranty of up to four years on our school backpacks. To ensure that the backpack lasts as long as possible, we have spare parts available if needed.

SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTS

Use of recycled plastic bottles

For 2024, the Street, City, Urban, Active Air FLX, and Classic series will be produced using textiles made from recycled plastic bottles. Beckmann’s goal is to transition to a production that exclusively uses textiles made from recycled plastic bottles.

FSC-certified wood

The pencils used in our pencil cases are made from FSC-certified wood. The same applies to all printed marketing materials where paper is used.

REACH and toy legislation

We comply with the REACH regulations of the EU, which prohibit the use of hazardous chemicals, and conduct corresponding tests. For products intended for young children (kindergarten and primary school), our tests are carried out according to an even stricter legal requirement: EN71-3, also known as the Toy Regulations [Leketøysforskriften] in Norway.

Chemical-free

In addition to complying with the regulations of REACH, we are committed to doing more. Therefore, we have eliminated the use of certain chemicals/ substances in our backpacks: Phthalate PFC BPA

Throughout their schooling, children and young people will meet friends, challenges, knowledge, and learning. There are many factors that influence their school life. Backpacks are the factor in children’s everyday lives that we at Beckmann can influence, and we promise that every day we do our very best to create the best school backpacks in the world.

The illustrations are created from scratch, and throughout the entire process, our aim is to create a magical story for children, a story that will be reflected in all related products. The entire process starts with broad exploration to find inspiration. We attend fairs, keep up with trends, conduct customer surveys, and have extensive conversations with teachers, parents, and most importantly, children!

One of the most important things we do when working on designs, is to observe children’s faces when they see the characters and colors. It is a bit magical for us to see how children’s eyes light up when they encounter the stories on the backpacks. When children daydream, that’s when we have achieved what we set out to do: Create that magical feeling.

In addition to ergonomics, quality, and functionality, we believe it is important to dedicate time and resources to the part of the development process that creates magic for children: the colors, characters, and patterns.

The Classic series is designed specifically for the needs of children! Active Air FLX with the award-winning ‘AIR FLOW’ air cushion from Beckmann! The innovative back support system is based on a combination of air and foam padding. The advantage of air is that the support will be dynamic and constantly adapt to your movement. This will in turn always fill the cavities between your back and backpack which leads to even better support and stability. FLX – because not all days are the same! With the FLX system, the volume of the backpack can be expanded by approx. 5 liters if required.

In the pressure sensor tests we conducted (read more on page 9) our first grade backpack, Active Air FLX, achieved extremely good results compared to competing school backpacks on the market. Below you can see the results from the measurements taken on different backpacks (time: 30 sec. running, weight in backpack: 2.5 kg + self-weight).

As can be seen from the above illustrations, the air cushion on the back of the Active Air FLX ensures that the pressure is distributed more evenly over larger areas of the back and creates a larger contact surface between the backpack and the back, resulting in better support and stability.

Based on the illustration, one can also see where the center of gravity of the backpack is located during the test. This is indicated by a red dot in the middle of the spine. Compared to competing products, the Active Air FLX has a lower center of gravity, indicating that the shoulders bear less weight and a larger portion of the weight has been shifted to the hips.

GUARANTEE/WARRANTY CLAIMS

Our backpacks are backed by a warranty of up to 4 years against manufacturing and material defects. If the backpack is not registered on our website, the standard 2-year warranty applies. Other products have a 2-year warranty. Please note that the warranty does not cover external factors such as normal wear and tear, product overloading, minor material irregularities (e.g., color variations), or external factors like temperature, humidity, or pollution. Damages resulting from accidents, transportation incidents, and theft are also not covered by the warranty. Additionally, any damage caused by the use of third-party equipment is not covered.

• A broken plastic part caused by hard impact, e.g. crushed under a chair leg or in a door.

• A tear in the backpack as the result of an accident.

• The backpack is carried using only one shoulder strap, causing the seam to fail at the interface between the backpack/strap.

• The backpack is overfilled so that the zips are under strain.
