It is with great pleasure that we hereby present to you our 2023 collection. Buildingon the success of last year’s collection, we have expanded our range with exciting new, trendy and playful colours and motifs. All our backpacks have that Scandinavian feel, best in class ergonomics, and premium quality for which Beckmann is renowned.

2022 has been affected by disruptions in shipping traffic between Asia and Europe, as well as challenging capacity issues and increased prices for raw materials and parts. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your patience and understanding as we work our way through these difficult times. Fingers crossed for a more “normal” 2023.

Despite the abovementioned challenges, it has been a good year for Beckmann so far. We are growing across all 25+ markets globally by working with you as partners who can promote the Beckmann brand and our design philosophy based on healthy ergonomics, playfulness and Scandinavian lifestyle. We wouldn’t have been able to achieve this growth without the unique relationships we have with you, our partners. We appreciate your support – THANK YOU!

In 2021, we launched our innovative new 1st Grade backpack: the Active Air FLX. This backpack has since been awarded two German ergonomics awards, and been test winners in every test performed in Norway. It has also been an incredible success globally. In 2023, we are expanding the range to 12 colours; to match our iconic Classic. We are proud to say that for 2023 we have the strongest line-up of 1st Grade backpacks in our 76-year history

Beckmann is currently Scandinavia’s leading school backpack brand. Our head office is located in Norway; however, our school backpacks are sold in over 25 countries all over the globe. This is something we are very proud of! Different countries have different cultures, education systems and school routes - but the need and desire for an ergonomic school backpack that is fun for children is the same across all markets. Recommended by experts

We have a long tradition of cooperation with experts, to ensure that our backpacks have the best ergonomic design. We currently develop and test backpacks in cooperation with Dr. Philip J. Wilkens, a Chiropractor who holds a doctorate degree in lumbar pain.

Our aim is to manufacture the world’s best school backpacks and there are fewer things that we appreciate more than international recommendations that confirm that our school backpacks are the most ergonomic school backpacks available to children.

Deutsche Kinderrheuma-Stiftung (German Society for Paediatric Rheumatology)

The Deutsche Kinderrheuma-Stiftung recommends our school backpacks, and we support their excellent work!

Have a couple of books handy that can be placed inside when the child is trying out the backpack.

IGR – Institut für Gesundheit und Ergonomie (Institute of Health and Ergonomics)

We are proud that Beckmann’s first grade backpack has received IGR's recommendation. Their tests confirm the user-friendliness and good ergonomic qualities of our backpacks. In 2019 we were also awarded the Innovation Prize for Ergonomics by IGR.

TIPS FOR STORE PERSONNEL

Put on the hip belt (the hips should carry the load). The lowest part of the belt must sit on the upper part of the hips.

Adjust the shoulder straps so that the backpack stops just above the bottom.

Attach the chest strap. Adjust the strap until it is just a couple of centimetres above the armpits. Make sure that the arms can move backwards and forwards without hitting the backpack.

Special Award Ergonomics

In 2021, Active Air FLX was awarded IGR and Insights-X’s price in ergonomics.

Tighten the top tightening straps.

Let the child move around freely whilst wearing the backpack. Can they walk/run without bumping into the backpack? Does the backpack fit closely into the back, particularly in towards the shoulders and hips?

LABORATORY TESTS OF BACKPACKS

To be innovative, you have to dare to try new things! We know that we make good backpacks - but could we make them even better? We have in collaboration with NORCE Research (norceresearch.no) and with support from the Research Council in Norway, we have tested school backpacks using pressure sensors and robots. We wanted to find out how the backpacks distribute weight across the shoulders, back and hips, along with the effects of the various ergonomic functions of the backpacks. WE CARE ABOUT MORE THAN JUST YOUR BACK!

The best way to reduce the environmental footprint from the products we buy and use, is to choose products of high quality and extended durability - and at the same time take good care of them. With over 75 years of experience in manufacturing school backpacks, we understand what they go through and the wear and tear they are subjected to.

It is important to us to assure you that our backpacks are manufactured according to stringent quality standards and are subject to inspections and follow-up in compliance with these (AQL Level III 1.5/2.5) before they end up on your back. We can therefore, with great confidence, offer an up to four-year guarantee on our school backpacks. In order to ensure that our backpacks last as long as possible we have spare parts in stock if required.

SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTS

Use of recycled plastic bottles

For 2022, the product lines Street, City and Urban, along with Active Air FLX, will be manufactured in textiles derived from recycled plastic bottles. Beckmann's goal is to move over to textiles that are only made from recycled plastic bottles.

FSC-certified timber

Lyra pencils, used in our pencil cases, are made from FSC certified timber. This also applies to all of our printed marketing material made from paper.

REACH and toy legislation

We comply with the EU’s REACH regulations that prohibit the use of hazardous chemicals and carry out tests according to these. For products that are intended for small children (kindergarten and first graders) we conduct tests according to an even stricter set of regulations, EN71-3, also known as The Toy Regulations in Norway.

Chemical-free

In addition to following REACH regulations, we intend to go further. Therefore we have eliminated the use of certain chemicals/substances in our backpacks: Phthalate PFC BPA

Throughout their schooling, children and young people will meet friends, challenges, knowledge and learning. There are many factors that have influence on a regular school day. School backpacks are the factor in a child’s day at school on which we here at Beckmann can have an influence. We promise that every day we do our very best to make the best school backpacks in the world.

The illustrations are created from original ideas, and throughout the entire process, our aim is to create a magical story for children, a story that will repeat itself throughout all of the products that belong together. The process begins in looking far and wide to find inspiration. We travel to trade fairs, follow trends, carry out customer surveys and spend a lot of time talking to teachers, parents - and not least, to children!

One of the most important things we do when working on designs, is to observe children’s faces when they see the figures and colours. It is also rather magical for us, as designers, to see how the children’s eyes shine when they see the motifs and stories on our backpacks. When children begin to daydream, then we have done what we set out to do: We have created that magical feeling.

In addition to ergonomics, quality and functionality, we believe it is important to spend time and resources on the part of the development process that creates the magic for children: colours, figures and patterns.

ACTIVE AIR FLX 20-25 LITRE

Active Air FLX was extremely well received by customers when it was introduced in 2021. The backpack offers the very best in functionality and optimal carrying comfort. The back support system is based on a combination of air and foam padding. This means that the air is distributed and provides a larger contact area between the backpack and the back, which in turn leads to better support and stability. The FLX system means that you can expand the volume of the backpack by approximately 5 litres when needed.

On the following page you can read more about our tests of the backpacks’ ergonomic properties using pressure sensor pads in a laboratory.

ONE BACKPACK - TWO DESIGNS

All designs come with reversible front pockets which means that the backpack can change appearance in just seconds! Children have different preferences and these can change during the first school years. Our aim is to meet this need. The backpack can then be changed and made more neutral if desired,

In the pressure sensor tests we conducted (read more on page 9) our first grade backpack, Active Air FLX, achieved extremely good results compared to competing school backpacks on the market. Below you can see the results from the measurements taken on different backpacks (time: 30 sec. running, weight in backpack: 2.5 kg + self-weight).

As we can see from the illustrations above, the air pads in the back on Active Air FLX makes sure that the pressure is more evenly distributed over a larger area of the back and it offers a larger contact surface, which in turn offers better support and stability.

From the illustrations you can also see the point of the backpacks’ centre of gravity throughout the tests. This is shown with a red dot in the middle of the spine. Compared to the competitors, Active Air FLX has a lower centre of gravity, which supports the theory that the shoulders bear less weight, and that more of the weight is distributed to the hips.

GUARANTEE/WARRANTY CLAIMS

Warranty claims process: Our backpacks come with an up to 4-year guarantee against manufacturing and material faults. If the backpack is not registered on our website, the normal guarantee of 2 years applies. Other products have a 2-year guarantee. The guarantee does not cover external factors such as wear and tear as a result of normal use, overloading the product, minor material irregularities (e.g. colour) or external factors such as temperature, humidity or pollution. Damage caused by accidents, transport collisions and theft are not covered by the guarantee. Any damage caused through the use of third-party equipment is not covered.

• A broken plastic part caused by hard impact, e.g. crushed under a chair leg or in a door.

• A tear in the backpack as the result of an accident.

• The backpack is carried using only one shoulder strap, causing the seam to fail at the interface between the backpack/strap.

• The backpack is overfilled so that the zips are under strain.
