Letter from the Editors Dear Patriots,

New year, new class, new changes. Every year, ironically, is the same. And this year, it’s no different—besides the major departure from our usual Journalism class. You’ve probably already read the same letter each year, one about having a new advisor, about delving into a different subject, about how each was different from the last.

We’ve followed the same trend of change. Except this year, there have been some major changes that were completely unexpected from the start.

The Beckman Chronicle is now a club! Once a class, we are now an independent “company” with an editorial staff that we “hired” via an application process, and we’ve handpicked some of the best students on campus for the job. From a design team to a content team to a photography team, our editorial staff has worked incredibly hard to bring this edition to you. We’ve always wanted the magazine to be our magazine, one completely for and by Beckman students. Every year, we try to reach more students and expand the content of our magazine beyond the ideas of our Journalism class. Now, as a club, we’re able

to incorporate more student feedback and offer new creative content for you—while still keeping some of our most beloved Chronicle pages and traditions. This edition’s theme is Prints & Patterns! In the past, we’ve struggled with creating a consistent theme, so, this year, we’ve worked on theme clarity and prominence. Prints and patterns are all different in nature, mirroring the unique individuality of every student on campus. Ultimately, the theme is abstract, so it’s up to you, the reader, to interpret it. Whether you see a blob or glob, there is no right or wrong here.

We hope this edition provokes conversation, inspires creative expression, and challenges norms.

‘Tis The Season for Sweets!

SNOWBALLS

These bite-sized balls of perfection are a near-identical replica of their namesakes.

You take a crumbled cake, mix it with frosting, and mold them into whatever shape your heart desires. For this recipe, we chose to shape them into balls (for snowballs, obviously!) We drizzled white chocolate onto the balls, but you could also coat them fully for the ultimate snow effect! It's a piece of cake to make, literally!

INGREDIENTS:

MATERIALS:

Frosting of your choice

Whisk

1 pack of white chocolate chips

Baking pans

1 pack of dark/milk chocolate chips

Fork (optional)

1-2 boxes of cake mix flavors of your choice (Eggs and oil are also required, according to the amount that the specific cake mix box calls for)

Sprinkles (optional) Bowls to mix your cake ingredients Spatula/anything to crush your cakes

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit (or otherwise directed on the cake mix box).

Prepare bowls and pour cake mix into them. Add eggs and oils (according to the amount directed on the box) and mix well with a whisk.

Pour the cake mixture into a baking pan(s) and place into oven at 325 degrees Fahrenheit (or otherwise directed on the cake mix box) for approximately 25-30 minutes (or otherwise directed on the cake mix box) or until a toothpick can be poked into the cake and come out clearly.

Let the cake(s) cool for about 10 minutes.

Crush the cake(s) into fine bits with a spatula or another utensil.

Mix frosting into the cake crumbles until the cake crumbles can be firmly formed into small balls.

Form small balls with the cake mixture.

Melt the white chocolate and milk chocolate chips in the microwave separately for about one to two minutes each, or until melted.

It's time to decorate your cake balls. A great suggestion is taking a fork, dipping it in the melted chocolate, and drizzing it over each ball. Another option is to cover the cake balls completely in chocolate. You may also put sprinkles on your snowballs and decorate them in any way you please.

PEPPERMINT BARK

When you sink your teeth into this rich, chocolatey treat, you will be overwhelmed with how decadent the flavor is knowing how incredibly easy it is to make! Peppermint Bark is one of the most simple yet festive recipes out there. It only requires a few steps and ingredients, but this combo of white and dark chocolate topped with peppermint flakes is guaranteed to get you in the holiday spirit!

INGREDIENTS: 4-5 peppermint candy canes

Peppermint extract

8 oz white chocolate

8 oz dark or milk chocolate

DIRECTIONS: Melt the dark/milk chocolate in a microwave for approximately one to two minutes or until melted.

Prepare a baking tray and place a baking sheet in it.

Carefully pour the melted dark/milk chocolate in the baking tray and spread evenly.

Wait for the dark/milk chocolate to set. Do not let the chocolate to harden or firm too much, but it should be set enough so that it won't mold in the white chocolate.

Drop a couple drops of peppermint extract on the dark/ milk chocolate.

Crush 4-5 peppermint candy canes.

After the dark/milk chocolate is set, melt the white chocolate in the microwave for one to two minutes, or until melted.

Mix in about half of the crushed peppermint candy canes with the white chocolate. Carefully pour the white chocolate over the dark/milk chocolate layer and spread evenly.

Drop two drops of peppermint extract on the white chocolate.

Sprinkle crushed peppermint candy canes over the white chocolate layer on top. Wait for the bark to completey harden and enjoy!

PEPPERMINT OREO MILKSHAKE An icy drink loaded with a scrumptious blend of peppermint and chocolate flavors, the Peppermint Oreo Milkshake is perfect for Californian weather, which never gets quite cold enough to properly enjoy hotter beverages. You definitely don't need to be a barista to whip up this fabulously simple drink.

INGREDIENTS: 3-4 peppermint candy canes

4-5 Oreos

3 large scoops of vanilla ice cream

DIRECTIONS: Crush 3-4 peppermint candy canes and place into blender.

Place 4-5 Oreos in the blender.

(Optional) Prepare a plate of crushed peppermint and wet the rim of a cup the drink will be poured into. Pat the rim of the cup into the crushed peppermint for decoration.

Scoop 3-4 scoops of vanilla ice cream into the blender.

Pour the drink into the cup.

Blend the mixture until smooth.

(Optional) Top the drink with whipped cream and crushed Oreos. Enjoy!

To Fail or Not to Fail Failure is avoided by most, but acknowledging its purpose can give one success.

When one thinks about failing, he or she will automatically attribute this action to mean lacking success.

And, with a lack of success comes a sense of stress, fear, embarrassment, anxiety, etc.

There is something about this particular word—failure—that has the ability to make any sane human shiver to their core. The reasoning behind such a reaction? Psychologists have hypothesized this as a human instinct; mankind seems to possess this propensity for only doing what is considered “right.”

Sunday, Oct. 13, 2019, was International Failure Day. Created in Finland, this holiday was made official about a decade ago in 2010 in honor of recognizing failure as part of the fight for success. 2019 marks the ye-

deeper meaning compared to what lies upon its surface.

Principal Donnie Rafter serves to address this perplexing effect.

“In the world, failure is looked upon as ‘I am a failure’ versus ‘I did fail.

But I’m not a failure, this is a failure,’” Dr. Rafter comments. “To me, failure is acknowledging that you have done something wrong and can do it better.”

One is never succeeding unless failure is accepted and conquered.

The keyword is “this” and not “I”.

It is vital that students understand the difference between failure as a person and failure in performance.

This is an important message, especially for students.

At first glance, this day can be seen as a deleterious stab at anyone’s self-esteem. But one must take a moment to push Pride aside and disacknowledge her presence. And upon further inspection, one will find that this day actually reflects a 8

And, sometimes you fail along the way. But you don’t have growth unless you are struggling.”

“When I was 13 years old, I was a bad swimmer,” Sun said. “Actually no, let’s face it. I wasn’t just bad, I was horrible. I could not make the All-Star team for two years, and it was really sad to watch all my friends make it.”

Now, after two long years of practicing and perseverance, Sun broke a school record and is part of the national team.

Whether an achievement like Sun’s occurs maybe today, tomorrow, or in ten years, one must remember that being successful doesn’t mean there is no more failure. Every day is a process that tests the strength in one’s ability to improve—a strength that is hidden inside everyone that takes more than a simple key to unlock.

“If you are never failing, you are never stretching, you are never challenging, you are never growing,” Mr. McGill remarks.

And with that, one is never succeeding unless failure is accepted and conquered.

Jeffrey Le's VEX "Takeover" Jeffrey Le, a freshman member of the VEX 2496J team, has proven himself as an invaluable addition to their team.

It was an elementary science project, one where students were only supposed to draw out a design for a robot. But for whatever reason, one student felt compelled to take it one step further. Rather than just sketching out a robot, he made one.

His teacher was blown away at his

program. In middle school, he was a part of the Robohawks 8838B team and competed at the World level for two years. When Beckman’s robotics applications rolled around, Le spent hours painstakingly crafting the perfect responses. There were only a few freshman spots available, and it was incredibly competitive.

After the long period of stress and worry, Le received the delightful news that he made the program. He was added to team 2496J and was ecstatic to be able to continue his robotics career.

unwavering dedication for robotics, especially for a fourth grader. So it was a no-brainer to nominate him for the Tustin Public Schools Foundation’s Summer Academy’s introduction to VEX IQ Robotics.

Practices started that summer, and Le dedicated countless hours to prepare for the upcoming competitive season. Despite being one of the only freshmen on the team, he was entrusted to be the team’s driver.

This role is crucial, as this person scores points for the team during competitions. Le knew that this

The challenges that came with the program captivated him and urged him to stay and pursue this passion of his. “I had an interest in engineering at a young age and I felt that robotics was something I was interested in and something that I could carry into my future,” explains Le. From fifth grade until now, Le has been an avid participant in the VEX

would entail a lot of practice and dedication since time and speed mean everything in these competitions.

“I tend to stay every day after school in order to get most of my drive

practice in. Speed comes naturally [with these practices]. So by the time the competition comes around, I should feel comfortable with the robot and able to do everything in a timely fashion,” explains Le.

In the midst of all of this, Le has had to learn how to adjust to a new high school and robotics program.

Despite his previous experience, the high school division has a different set of expectations. Rather than focusing on winning, they are driven by improving and strengthening themselves as a team.

He stays after school every day to get as much practice in as possible.

Sometimes, these practices can go as late as 8 p.m. In addition to all those hours, he comes to Beckman on Saturdays to practice with his team from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each week.

All of these long hours have definitely paid off—as of November 16, he ranks #2 in California and #13 in the world for robot driving skills.

This award is no easy feat, and the rest of his team are incredibly proud of him and his achievements.

Although Le is satisfied with this recognition, he knows that there is always more room for improvement.

Le hopes to improve upon his skills and maintain this impressive reputation that he established.

Above all, his shoes are his special feature. “I like my Docs because it is different from the usual shoe and they make me powerful,” Leor said. “It makes me stand out.” When Leor puts his outfits together, he manages to become the epitome of street style.

Sleep Epidemic

Sleep deprivation is a worldwide “epidemic” that plagues high schoolers. What is the cause behind our sleep deprivation and how can we fix our sleep schedules?

“Sleep more, it’s important for your health.”

We have all heard that countless times—from parents, teachers, doctors and just about every adult out there. But, for some reason, we are not listening to them. When most teenagers hear the recommended amount of sleep they should be getting each night, sarcastic laughter ripples through the room. Now, we have a crisis at hand. High schoolers throughout the world are suffering the dire consequences of sleep deprivation. The symptoms include excessive yawning, droopy eyelids, inability to focus, heightened reliance on caffeine—the list goes on.

The National Sleep Foundation recommends that teenagers aged 14 to 17 should be getting about eight to ten hours of sleep each night. However, it is clear that most teenagers are not sleeping for this long. In fact, the Stanford Medicine News Center reports that more than 87 percent of high schoolers in the United States receive far less than the recommended 9 or more hours of sleep. The lack of sleep takes a toll on both the students’ physical and mental health, which could ultimately hinder their success in school.

And Beckman students are nowhere near immune to this epidemic. According to our survey, the majority of Beckman students sleep less than the recommended amount, with approximately 40 percent of students only receiving 3 to 5 hours of sleep on a school night. But what really 16

causes sleep deprivation? Is it truly because of schoolwork or is it because of poor time management? Or is it a combination of both?

The answer can be incredibly subjective because it depends on each individual student and their own study habits, motives, lifestyles, and personalities. For some students, schoolwork is the main reason for their lack of sleep. “Taking many difficult classes this year has changed my sleep schedule for the worse as my sleep has gone from 7-9 hours in [my] freshman and sophomore year to about 4-6 hours depending on the amount of tests there are the next day,” said junior Jaya Athuluru. But for others, distractions and procrastination affect their sleep. “I tend to start my homework after dinner, which is usually around 8. When I do my homework, I usually have my phone on me so I get distracted really easily,” said an anonymous sophomore.

Our survey results show that approximately 60 percent of students think that schoolwork and lack of proper time management are both reasons for their lack of sleep. “Getting home from a long day of school and activities leaves me desiring instant gratification for my hard work.

This comes in the form of YouTube videos, games, or taking a nap,” said senior Alan Le. “The problem is that with my schoolwork, I will have to stay up later in order to complete work from my classes.”

However, Beckman has been active in taking care of its students. Starting this school year, Beckman High School has implemented late starts every Wednesday instead of every other Wednesday as a result of rec-

Now, in theory, students are able to catch an extra hour of sleep every week. Nonetheless, many have questioned the effectiveness of the new late-start Wednesdays. Some students see them as an opportunity to catch up on much-needed sleep after finishing half of the week, choosing to sleep at their usual bedtime for the extra hour of sleep. “Having late start every Wednesday has given me the chance to sleep in at least once a week, which allows me to be more productive for [the] following days,” commented a sophomore.

On the other hand, some students take it as a chance to sleep even later or procrastinate more since they have greater time in the morning.

“Though I feel like having late start every Wednesday is a step in the right direction, I think it’d be best to have late starts on each Monday instead,” said an anonymous senior.

“Given that our sleep schedules aren’t used to waking up later than usual by the middle of the week, we can feel more tired as a result of being out of our REM cycles.”

On a state level, California legislature has taken strides in addressing student sleep deprivation. In October 2019, Governor Gavin Newsom signed a legislation that enforces later start times for middle and high school students, effective for the 2022-2023 school year. Califor-

nia will be the first state to implement such policies. That means that Beckman students will be coming to school at 8:30 a.m. for their first periods, though students with zero periods may still have to come before 8 a.m.

While this change will not be immediate, we can still take action ourselves to maximize productivity and hopefully get more sleep.

1. Try to finish all your schoolwork as soon as you arrive home. Just sit down, remove all distractions, focus, and crank out all your homework with, perhaps, a few five-minute breaks in between each assignment.

2. Write all your tasks down in a planner or agenda so that you can plan everything accordingly. With so many activities, it’s often hard to keep track of everything.

3. Incentivize yourself with small rewards once in a while whenever you have completed something on time to prevent chronic procrastination. Treat yourself to something nice so that you do not feel as if you’re stuck only doing work.

Ryan Yoo 9th grade “As we transition into high school, the courses and the curriculum itself become more rigorous, and it is definitely difficult to adapt to this new environment. However, I still think time-management plays a big role. We hear it all the time: ‘don’t procrastinate.’ But we tend to forget how to get things done ahead of time. Some people even refuse to sleep early because they are trying to tell themselves that by sleeping later, they are getting more things done.

If the result of your work is not as great as you anticipated, rather than reflecting on the time you spent doing the work, you should reflect on how effectively you utilized the time.”

A longtime Criminal:

Fake Food Commercials The delicious syrup spilling over the fluffy pancakes on the television screen looks incredibly delectable to consume—if you want to drink engine oil.

That fresh ice cream in the commercial? Fake. They’re actually mash potatoes. The appetizing steam rising out of the hot chicken wings?

Fake. It’s a steamer paired with a microwaved tampon. Everything you see in food advertisements? Sorry to break it to you, but they’re all fake. They’re not real, unless you’re okay with biting into the cardboard hidden in the cake.

Commercials, advertisements, and propaganda are tactics that all businesses can use to draw attention to their products. More attention means that there are more consumers buying their products. More consumers means more cash earned.

There’s nothing wrong with bringing attention to your product so that people are aware of its existence.

So what is the issue? Obviously, as a business, eating up billions of dollars is the ultimate goal. Whatever it takes, no matter how unethical or unjustified their actions may be, many businesses are willing to do whatever they can in order to cash in a lot of money.

The motivation behind these fake methods used in order to make the food appear as appealing as possible is understandable. The food businesses want to attract as many people as they can. After all, money can be a very motivating factor.

But it all comes down this: consumers are tricked into buying items that are not what they expected.

How would you feel if someone told you there was this amazing burger you can buy and eat? They show you dramatic visuals of what the product looks like. The appealing steam rising out of the fully stacked burger seems to waft out of the TV screen and into your nostrils. Take my money!

And then you receive the burger.

It’s flat. And there is ketchup oozing disturbingly on the side. The cheese looks artificial and melted strangely.

The meat is grainy in a weird way.

There’s a single pickle in the burger. Talk about disappointment.

You might be asking, why should I care? Because in the end, it is your money that you’re losing.

Imagine other businesses doing the same things as the food industry. Imagine paying to go to college but realizing that they do not offer a certain kind of degree like they promised! You had rejected other colleges for that school because of their major, but now, you can’t even study the subject you want to.

Unfortunately, these businesses are gaining an incredible amount of money by falsely advertising their products to millions of individuals who are tricked into buying the food with high expectations.

The expectations of a hamburger you see on an advertisement versus what you actually get as a customer.

So why? Why don’t those in charge of advertising actually promote something that is real? It’s all false advertisement. As a consumer, aren’t you upset that you’re paying for something gold tier worth and receiving something dirt tier worth?

If you search up something about food advertisements on a search engine like Google, all the titles have something in common. How food advertisements “trick” you, clever ways food advertisers “trick” con-

Food advertisements should stop falsely advertising their products. If they want to attract customers ethically, they should present a product on television that the customers will actually receive. And if the reality is ugly, then why don’t the restaurants try to change their products to validate their products? And if food industries don’t want to show how their food is really like, then they should live up to the high expectations they set.

Food businesses should stop creating a utopia of food when they are actually handing over a dystopia.

Beckman

2019. It’s the end of the decade, the end of our decade. We laughed, we cried, we struggled, and we thrived.

We grew up watching paper and pencil turn into laptops and tablets, compact disks into media streaming services, and social interactions into likes, comments, and shares.

This world we grew up in has changed drastically. In this day and age, we manage our classes on top of our social lives. The stress from social media pressures us to fit in more than ever before, but it’s all we’ve ever known.

High school is difficult with standardized testing, extracurriculars, clubs, sports, and college applications, but we take on all of it with enthusiasm and passion. We look for a place of belonging, and, oftentimes, it’s found within this campus.

Rewind

The 3,000 students on this campus have made this school their own— there are more than 100 clubs on campus, 100 classes, and countless chances to discover yourself here. When Beckman opened its doors in 2004, we only had a freshman and sophomore class with a mere 600 students in total. Now, Beckman’s campus has expanded five times its original size, but, even so, we’ve all formed a tightknit community. For some of us, it’s nearing the end, just the beginning, or somewhere in between. Nonetheless, our high school experience has been invaluable to us and impossible to convey with just words.

A picture is truly worth a thousand words, and we hope that the ones we’ve compiled will inspire you and remind you of the memories from this semester that will never depart from us. In celebration of Beckman’s 15th anniversary, we’ve even compiled some memorable pictures from Beckman’s first graduating class. You’ll definitely see the changes in those pictures compared to now, and we’ve truly come a long way.
