CONCEPT

COANDA EFFECT In fluid dynamics, an idea exists known as Bernoulli’s Principle. It states that as air moves around an object, it creates different pressures on that object; fast air equals less pressure, slow air equals more pressure.

If, for instance, there is high upward pressure an object, it will push an object up – a term defined as lift. Now, if we know that moving air has less pressure than air that is still, we can start to understand something known as the Coanda Effect – most easily recognized when fluids like air or water move over convex surfaces.

The graphic provided shows how an upward pressure of air is balanced by the downward force of gravity. When the ball, in the center of the air-stream, approaches the edges, air is curved around the surface. This action will return the ball back to its original place. It is a process which enables the object to balance inside and stay within the air-stream – even as the source of air is moved around.

This micro-center will provide a space to intrigue guests and lift them through the space. The idea is to create a low pressure atmosphere within the center so the high pressure atmosphere surrounding everyday life (and by consequence surrounding the building) makes guests continuously desire to return.

Moreover, while immersed in this low pressure environment, guests will be further encouraged to stay within the building because of the balance (created through features of the program) between work, leisure & necessity.
