WHAT MAKES THE BEAVER VALLEY ONE 0F A KIND? What’s the best thing about Beaver County?

It could be the rich variety of food available here, be it in one of the newer restaurants that grace Third Street in downtown Beaver, or in one of the tradition-rich places in Ambridge, Aliquippa, Beaver Falls, New Brighton or places in between.

It could be the music. From Henry Mancini to Donnie Iris and the Granati and Steals brothers, Beaver County has its place in the American songbook.

Books are written about the sports greats who’ve hailed from here. The lesser-knowns include Tony Gennaro, a renowned weightlifter, and Shane Douglas, who is one of professional wrestling’s pioneers.

Scores of famous faces have called Beaver County home, including “Charlie No Face” — otherwise known as Ray Robinson, a disfigured man who lived in Big Beaver and died in 1985 but whose legend lives on.

Just as no one word can best describe Beaver County, no one person or place can, either.

In Day 2 of our annual Progress edition, The Times takes a look at some of our region’s best people and things.

Successful rockers still call Beaver Valley home

Beaver County’s resident rock star gladly turned up Nov. 25 at Beaver’s new deli, ceremoniously cutting a 22-pound wheel of Jarlsberg cheese as a mirthful publicity stunt.

Iris is a good sport about such things, having helped local businesses by being in TV commercials (Hostetter Auctions) and newspaper ads (Guzzetti Optometric Services) and by drumming up Tuesday-night business at Jergel’s Rhythm Grille by hosting a monthly gathering for cigar buffs.

His records sold from coast to coast, but Iris remained a Beaver Valley resident, drawn to the region and its people, as are other local musicians who have achieved notable success.

The Granati Brothers grew their roots deep here, even after opening dozens of arena concerts for those monsters of rock, Van Halen, in 1979 and 1981.

The sibling band’s David and Joey Granati run the Ambridge-based For Those About to Rock Academy, where aspiring young musicians learn to play onstage. Their brother Hermie Granati has established himself as one of the region’s top keyboardists, known for electrifying performances everywhere from Heinz Hall to jam sessions at local bars. The other brother, Rick, is a highly sought-after commercial painter, often seen in his bucket truck in Beaver while also keeping busy planning and promoting local shows that often have a community or charitable aspect.

And then there’s the Jaggerz, who played Dick Clark’s famed “American Bandstand” and topped one of the big music charts in 1970. With original members Jimmie Ross and Benny Faiella on vocals and guitar, the Jaggerz ushered in 2017 with a New Year’s Eve show at the Fez in Hopewell Township.

It’s that loyalty to home that keeps Vanessa Campagna splitting time between Nashville and Chippewa Township. Since she competed on CBS’s “Star Search” as a 10-year-old, locals knew a singing career was Campagna’s destiny.

Campagna collaborated with the famed Marvin Hamlisch and songsmith Desmond Child (Aerosmith, Bon Jovi), performed at the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame Awards backed by the

Over the past 24 months, Farmers has acquired two community banks, National Bancshares and Tri-State 1st Banc, as well as an insurance agency, The Bowers Group. In 2016, Farmers saw its stock price increase 68 percent, which is its best annual performance in 10 years.

Net income for 2016 totaled $20.6 million, which is 155 percent higher than the 2015 net income of $8.1 million. In 2016, loans grew by more than 10 percent. Past-due loans decreased as a total percentage of loans.

Over the past two years, Farmers has achieved growth in a variety of loan types, including commercial and commercial real estate, residential real estate, agricultural and farmland. It offers a Small Business Express program, which allows commercial borrowers to receive a decision and closing the same day as application.

Mortgage banking continued to expand in 2016. Farmers opened a loan production office led by a longtime mortgage industry leader in Beaver County, with plans to add a commercial lender there in 2017. The mortgage department added experienced lenders in Stark and Jefferson counties while rolling out a new mobile app that allows borrowers to submit information.

Beaver County rocker Donnie Iris cut a chunk of cheese in November to help celebrate the opening of Don’s Deli on College Avenue in Beaver.

Miami Symphony Orchestra, and partnered with Weirton rocker Rick Witkowski on the music for a short film “Inocente” that aired on MTV and won a 2013 Academy Award in the Documentary/Short category.

All impressive accomplishments, but when her uncle’s new Beaver Falls bar, Frank’s Original Grill, needed a promotional spark, that’s where Campagna chose to premiere some original songs for an appreciative standing-room-only audience.

Giving back to the valley was something important for Aliquippa native B.E. Taylor, who each Christmas season performed at Beaver Falls Middle School as a fundraiser for that school district’s Tiger Pause community program. Consistently filling Heinz Hall and setting attendance records at the Strand Theater in Zelienople, Taylor made sure to include local student musicians onstage for his holiday shows.

Aliquippa songwriter Melvin Steals gave back to the community in a different way, becoming a principal in the Aliquippa and Quaker Valley school districts after establishing himself, along with his brother Mervin, as a songwriter for such famed artists as Gloria Gaynor and the Spinners (with

their platinum-selling “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love”).

Beaver County steel towns always did have a soft spot for musicians. For proof, look no further than the Henry Mancini Bridge, that vital link into West Aliquippa, honoring native son Mancini, the “Pink Panther Theme” composer who won four Oscars and 20 Grammys.

Mancini’s widow, Ginny, and their children, avidly have supported the Henry Mancini Musical Theatre Awards, annually honoring musical theater excellence among high schools in Beaver, Butler and Lawrence counties.

Once a valley boy, always a valley boy, 1966 Billboard chart-topper Lou Christie (“Lightnin’ Strikes”) reminisced in a December interview with The Times where he warmly recalled Christmas shopping in Ambridge and working at his father’s Crescent Township pizza shop.

Now if we can only get former Rochester resident Christina Aguilera to pay a friendly homecoming visit.

“The Voice” star still has western Pennsylvania ties, evidenced Dec. 27 when she was spotted taking in a Pittsburgh Penguins game at PPG Paints Arena.

Betty Douglas inspires with her art, music  SCOTT TADY Times Staff /// more photos, video at timesonline.com ROCHESTER TWP. — Snapping her fingers and bobbing her head, Betty Douglas is caught up in the rhythm as she faces the drummer and saxophonist jamming in her living room.

When the right moment comes, Douglas closes her eyes a bit, leans in toward her microphone and smoothly slips into the song, warmly and elegantly singing the words to a 1920s jazz standard.

It’s a Tuesday night in Rochester Township, and Douglas is making art.

Not the award-winning paintings and sculptures she’s created that adorn museum walls and showrooms throughout the country and abroad, as well as at her Douglas Art Gallery just steps from her house.

On this night, she’s expressing herself artistically with her jazz trio as they rehearse for upcoming gigs.

The trio floats through “My Funny Valentine,” then takes an exploratory journey through “There’ll Be Some Changes,” improvising notes and phrasing before gliding to a precise finish.

“She doesn’t do it the way we rehearse it, and that makes it better,” saxophonist Rex Trimm said.

“Nobody ever heard it like that,” Douglas concurred about the band’s unique “There’ll Be Some Changes” rendition.

“True jazz is improvisation,” she added.

And that improvisation depends on creativity and bold thinking, experience and enthusiasm, traits that effectively have served Douglas in a career filled with distinguished and pioneering feats.

Douglas broke barriers as the first African-American teacher in the Beaver Area School District in 1964 and went on to become the first female African-American professor at Geneva College.

She was the first artist to be featured in a one-person show at the Merrick Art Gallery in New Brighton.

In 1974, along with her late-husband, Bill, she opened the Douglas Art Gallery.

She was just getting warmed up.

And decades later, she shows no signs of cooling off.

Douglas recently participated in the Jazz at Emmanuel Episcopal Church service on Pittsburgh’s North Side.

“I did a dramatic reading of Nelson Mandela’s farewell speech in Cape Town, South Africa, against the background of the Boys Choir of the Afro American Music Institute singing ‘Oh Freedom,’” Douglas said.

Around that same time, Douglas appeared on Chris Shovlin’s WMBAWBVP radio show “Frontiers in Learning,” as the Geneva College

Humanities Department arranged for her to give her “Evolution of Jazz” lecture and performance for more than 300 students this semester.

She’ll be a panelist at the 23rd annual National African American Women’s Conference at the University of Kentucky and a juror for the annual art show starting March 30 at the Center at the Mall at the Beaver Valley Mall.

That all might seem like a whirlwind schedule, though the woman whose email signature cites a biblical passage — “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” — wouldn’t want it any other way.

Trailblazer and artist Born Elizabeth Asche in Rochester, she was raised in Beaver Falls, where at age 7 she began drawing and at age 10 received her first oil paints.

Her father was an electrical technician whose job duties included servicing jukeboxes. He’d often bring home records by jazz, blues and country artists, sparking Douglas’ lifelong love for music.

Throughout her schooling, she gravitated to the creative outlets of music, painting and writing.

She received scholarship offers in all three disciplines, opting for Carnegie Tech (later to become Carnegie Mellon), where she studied art. An upperclassman in her department was Andy Warhola, who would drop the final “a” from his last name after moving to New York and become one of the 20th century’s most influential artists.

After graduating from Carnegie

“Who’s Who in Black America,” “Outstanding Educators of America” and “The International Directory of Women in the Arts.”

Though some nights, she took a step out of academia and slipped into jazz chanteuse mode, singing at Pittsburgh and Beaver Valley jazz functions.

Her recent recordings with saxophonist Trimm are available on SoundCloud.

Meanwhile, her Douglas Art Gallery offers for sale dozens of her highly imaginative and in some cases award-winning works, ranging from nature paintings to portraits, including one of Rochester Olympic medalist Lauryn Williams. A few of her art pieces make use of old piano parts.

She likes when she can tie together her musical and visual arts interests.

“I’m a multidisciplinary person,” Douglas said. “I never have been able to decide what kind of artist I should be, and so I just keep doing what I feel like doing at the time.”

A distinguished life

Tech, Douglas took several teaching jobs, including one at Texas College in Tyler, Texas, where she met a student named Bill Douglas, whom she’d marry in 1957.

Bill finished his master’s degree in 1961, though the couple discovered jobs were scarce for them in Texas.

“So we loaded an old Peugeot with all our worldly goods and took off for Pennsylvania since my family was here,” Douglas recalled in a 1974 profile in The Times.

Beaver County public schools were just getting integrated with their teaching staffs as Bill took a teaching job in the Rochester Area School District.

Betty soon followed, first landing a teaching job in Beaver, then at Rochester and Geneva College, where she became a full-time professor in the fine arts and humanities department.

The Douglases raised three daughters: Andrea, Vicki and Nanette.

Once the kids were grown and she had retired from teaching, Douglas devoted more time to her artwork.

She created paintings and sculptures exhibited throughout the world, including the National Museum of Women in Washington, D.C., and the Uganda Christian University in Africa, as well as closer to home at the Three Rivers Arts Festival in Pittsburgh and the Sweetwater Center for the Arts in Sewickley.

She gave her time to community endeavors, such as chairing the Brodhead Cultural Center Association of Valley Artists and Craftsmen, and earned national recognition, including listings in

On Dec. 6, Douglas received the Lifetime Service Award from the Rochester Chamber of Commerce during a banquet at Seven Oaks Country Club.

In his induction speech, chamber official Stephen Catanzarite said he’s always had this image of Douglas’ studio and gallery complex “as a kind of anchor and spiritual center for the surrounding community.”

Describing Douglas as a community elder in the highest sense of the word, Catanzarite said she’s “without question one of the most accomplished people I know — artist and educator, advocate and activist, scholar and singer, community leader and volunteer and lately, particularly through her use of social media, agent provocateur.”

Indeed, Douglas is no shrinking violet on Facebook, where she regularly speaks out against what she deems as political injustice. Pity the fool who doesn’t do his homework before engaging her in a political debate.

“Politics is an inescapable part of community life unless you become a hermit,” she posted on Feb. 1.

Her community work includes volunteering for the Merrick Art Gallery, the Beaver Valley Musicians Union and Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School in Midland.

Douglas keeps an active schedule for a person of any age, yet alone her age (which she politely but steadfastly refuses to identify).

She’s one of the people who makes the Beaver Valley special through her prolific artistic endeavors.

“It’s my life, quite simply. I don’t know what I would do without them,” Douglas said. “It’s just as normal to me as eating and sleeping.”

Real Estate Beaver County Association of Realtors BEAVER — The Beaver County Association of Realtors has served real estate professionals and the community since 1943.

With more than 500 members, the association is an effective voice for private property rights and the professional and ethical behavior within the industry.

Primary goals are to promote and maintain high standards of conduct in the real estate profession as expressed by the Code of Ethics of the National Association of Realtors; to encourage public service by its members; to keep the community informed of the role and work of real estate professionals; to foster courteous and professional relations among its members; and to preserve the history of the system and the memory of past members.

VANPORT TWP. — Eaton Corp. is a diversified power-management company with more than 100 years of experience providing energy-efficient solutions for managing electrical, hydraulic and mechanical power.

Eaton is a global supplier of electrical components and systems.

The Eaton plant on

Tuscarawas Road in Vanport Township has been in operation since 1940. It was originally built as a Curtis Wright propeller manufacturing plant. In 1948, Westinghouse Electric acquired the plant and began the production of electrical components and devices, relocating that business from East Pittsburgh. Eaton acquired the plant from Westinghouse in 1994 and continued the manufacture of molded case circuit breakers under the brand names of CulterHammer and Eaton.

Today, the plant is part of Eaton’s Power Component Division and manufactures a diverse product line of circuit breakers and accessories for many industrial and commercial markets, such as mining, machine building, new construction and the U.S. Navy. This year, the plant will become the component assembly for the new NRX breaker line.

The plant operates on 400,000 square feet of manufacturing space on 75 acres and runs a two-shift operation five days a week, employing 308 people.

There are 247 hourly employees and 61 salaried employees.

The outlook for the facility is promising; as the economy improves, the facility should increase sales to its global customer base.

The Vanport facility is considered an incubation platform, where

new products are developed before release to market.

Eaton supports local agencies such as the United Way, Girls’ Hope, Make-a-Wish, Children and Youth Services and the March of Dimes.

The plant also participates in several environmental programs to reduce water usage and increase solar energy use. It recycles paper, plastics, cardboard, pallets, batteries and fluorescent lights to minimize impact on the environment.

Nova Chemicals POTTER TWP. — Nova Chemicals develops and manufactures chemicals and plastic resins that make everyday life safer, healthier and easier.

Its employees work to ensure health, safety, security and environmental stewardship through the company’s commitment to sustainability and responsible care.

Nova Chemicals acquired the operation in Potter Township in October 1996, and the site produces expandable polystyrene for a variety of applications, including building and construction materials, consumer packaging, and food and beverage containers.

There are approximately 200 employees at the Potter facility, working in manufacturing, research and development, and commercial functions.

Rick and Jeannie D’Agostino, owners of the original Ricky Dee’s Pizza in the Glenwillard section of Crescent Township, reopened the shop in 2009 in Sheffield Lanes. The couple has managed Sheffield Lanes since 1996 and recently opened a state-of-theart pro shop run by their son Zach and his longtime friend Matt Mowad.

Sheffield Lanes, Lounge HOPEWELL TWP. — Sheffield Lanes and Lounge in Hopewell Township has been a local landmark since it opened in 1950 as a 12-lane rubberband duckpin center.

Steak salad If you’re not from Beaver County, steak salad is a culinary conundrum.

It was to Michael Gordon, chef at The Fairport in Rochester (the former Hilltop Restaurant).

“I’m from Michigan, so it’s definitely weird to a guy like me,” said Gordon, who was recruited to Pittsburgh about five years ago at the behest of a colleague to be sous chef at the Grand Concourse in Pittsburgh.

Chef Michael Gordon estimates between 50 and 70 — more during holidays — are served each week.

Gordon said he “grew up in this business” — his mother and brother are also chefs — and has seen a lot of regional and ethnic cuisine, but never steak and fries on a salad.

“Funny I never saw it before,” he said.

“None of my cooks ever came from Pittsburgh when I was in Michigan, I guess. I had one guy from New Orleans.

He brought the muffuletta with him. … I worked with a lot of Middle Eastern people in Michigan; a lot of Greeks … but never saw fries on a sandwich or fries on a salad. Definitely new.”

And very intriguing, especially to a chef.

“Whenever you see somebody’s doing something and they’re doing it well and it’s different, you take notes on it, I’ll say that. You definitely do. It was impressive. … I was definitely intrigued by it.”

About two and a half years ago, Regal Enterprises Inc. purchased the Hilltop and undertook a $1.5 million renovation, said CEO Dennis Denkovich.

“We brought in our own chefs,” all certified and culinary trained, he said, and “cut them loose to design their own menu.”

But one item was sacrosanct: steak salad.

AMBRIDGE he process starts daily around 6:30 a.m. at the Maple Restaurant in Ambridge.

As commercial ovens heat to 400 degrees, choice or higher grades of eye-of-round beef slow-roast for hours in what owner Tom Pappas calls the “holy trinity: onions, carrots and celery.”

The aroma intoxicates; salivary glands go into overdrive.

The cooked roasts — about 90 pounds a day — rest before slicing.

“You want the enzymes to work and tenderize it,” Tom said, to concentrate flavor and keep meat juicy.

Thin slices of lean and tender beef are then returned to strained broth until served.

The menu at the Maple — open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner — features a variety of sandwiches, salads and dinners, including daily features like liver and onions, roast pork, stuffed pork chops, roast turkey, spaghetti and baked meat loaf, but everyone knows the hot roast beef sandwich is “the staple at the Maple.”

Tom estimates about 3,400 are sold a month.

“The hot beef is the lifeblood of the Maple Restaurant,” he said. “Just like the Nile River is the lifeblood of Egypt, gravy’s the lifeblood of the restaurant. …That’s what we’re noted for,” and why, he said, “we’ve been in business for 53 years.”

When someone says Maple, Tom said, “they think of hot beef. They think of me, which is a tribute, you know, to my dad and the hard work and my employees.”

His father, Jim Pappas, who celebrated his 95th birthday Dec. 28, founded the Maple Aug. 19, 1963, working until he was 88. He retired when his back started bothering him.

worked in the wire mill at the former Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp. in Aliquippa, but soon tired of it.

He and a friend bought into the K&N Restaurant in Ambridge when Tom was 5.

“The hot beefs were there,” Tom said.

“They were selling for 50 cents a piece in those days — 1953. … It wasn’t a novel idea. It was already on the menu.

We just perfected it a little bit, you know?

Did they ever.

Order a hot roast beef sandwich at the Maple and you’ve ordered a “belly filler,” Tom said. “You eat one of those and you’re good for the rest of the day.”

Indeed.

Tucked between two slices of soft,

white Pullman loaf bread is a high stack of layered beef drenched in homemade gravy — a proprietary secret.

“I usually go through about 30 gallons of gravy a day,” Tom said.

Diners have a choice of french fries, home fries or mashed potato.

“The majority are fries, gravy on everything,” Tom said.

To keep abreast of restaurant trends, he said “you try different items … you experiment.”

Last month, for example, a new entrée — broiled chicken breast topped with red and green pepper and cheese along with two side dishes — was added.

“It caught on well,” Tom said, but he will “never get rid of roast beef. That’s a staple.”

It’s the best of both worlds at Hank’s Frozen Custard and Mexican Food in Rochester Township.

Since 1947, the iconic eatery off Route 65 has lured customers with its creamy soft-serve. All the delicious flavors — like pistachio, orange pineapple, peanut butter, banana, strawberry, Dreamsicle and black raspberry, and chocolate and vanilla, of course — are made on site and touted on a large sign in the shape of an artist’s palette.

Years later, classic American fare like burgers and fries were added, followed

by Mexican foods — tacos, burritos, enchiladas, tostados — novel menu items for Beaver County around 1970.

The late Hank Grosshans founded the place and came up with the idea, said current owner Jeff Kohlmann.

“From what I understand, they (Hank’s) were the first ones in Beaver County to sell 15-cent hamburgers and 10-cent fries. So, he probably wanted to try something different.”

While Grosshans was visiting California, Kohlmann said, he was introduced to tacos, liked them and put them on the menu.

It was a surefire decision as “Mexican food, tacos are still the primary item we sell,” he said.

But not everybody wants tacos, “so that’s why we started adding the other things” — like steak and chicken salads, meat and fries, breaded shrimp, appetizers like cheese sticks, mixed vegetables, pot stickers.

Still, he simmers 120 to 240 pounds of ground beef — an 81-19 blend ground on site — in sauce each day for the Mexican food.

“People who’ve been here all their lives, when they eat a taco, they associate our flavor with what a taco tastes like,” he said.

And they come from all over.

One couple comes from New Wilmington once a week. At season’s end — Hank’s is open the first Monday in March through Nov. 1 — they bought five 3.5-gallon tubs of BV-7073658V01

Sometimes, especially in summer, “it’s like an amusement park out here,” said Bill Albert, manager.

Win or lose, baseball teams stop after games for treats; teenagers come on

dates; grandparents bring their grandchildren.

“It’s a meeting place,” Jeff said, especially on Friday nights. “Likely, you’ll see somebody you know.”

Sunday nights draw car buffs.

“These guys will come up. They park up on top. They pop hoods. They hang out ‘cause that’s what they did when they were younger.”

It’s nostalgia, the lasting memories that keep people returning.

“We want families to be able to bring kids here and have a good time,” he said.

Jeff described himself as a “third-generation business owner.”

His late grandfather, John Kohlmann, came to the United States from Germany in 1912 and owned a bottling company in Beaver Falls.

His late father, Jere Kohlmann, owned a grill in Beaver Falls and market in Darlington. He purchased Hank’s in 2000.

“He just knew the reputation,” Jeff said.

“He knew it was a good business.”

Jeff purchased the business from his mother about five years ago after his father died.

It’s hard work with long hours, he said, but “I love to work.”

Old meets new at Jerry’s Curb Service  MARSHA KEEFER Times Staff /// more photos + video at timesonline.com BRIDGEWATER Eateries and restaurants abound in Beaver County, but if you’re looking for one that’s iconic and unique, it’s Jerry’s Curb Service in Bridgewater.

It’s a throwback to the ’50s when drive-in restaurants featuring burgers, fries and shakes were cool.

Carhops — pads and pencils in hand — would greet customers at their cars, take orders and return with food on aluminum trays that hooked on car windows.

With its retro look – neon signs, shiny chrome accents — nostalgia reigns at Jerry’s on Riverside Drive.

“It is iconic, it’s retro,” acknowledged Dave Guido, “but it has modern technology and really sweet systems inside.”

Guido, senior vice president of operations at Bruster’s who also helps oversee operations at Jerry’s, was referring to integrated computer software and hardware systems that streamline the food ordering and preparation process.

Instead of pad and pencil, carhop waitresses use hand-held units to take orders.

“While we’re still standing at your car, the order is being beamed into the pantry, into the kitchen,” he said, describing the customer experience as “old meets new” coupled with “nostalgia and all that magic that people came to love” but using modern technology “to make that experience better.” And get food to the customer quicker.

While upgrades have made workflow more efficient, Guido said things are still cooked to order and done the old-fashioned way to maintain quality and freshness.

“We still cut all our produce. We get heads of lettuce in and we cut it fresh daily,” he said, sometimes multiple times a day.

“We cook everything from fresh steak, fresh potatoes, fresh beef, fresh chicken.”

He recalled the philosophy of Jerry Reed, who founded the business in 1947 after completing a tour of duty with the U.S. Air Force: “If you want to ruin food, freeze it or burn it.”

Jerry’s also has Fran Benedict, general manager, whom Guido lauded.

“You can have all the technology and all the nostalgia, but if you don’t have a good, solid leader in a food operation, you might as well forget it.

He really has done a great job.”

The first Jerry’s — little more than a tiny kitchen under roof — opened in Chippewa Township, modeled after Midwest drive-ins Jerry Reed saw returning home after his military discharge. Sometime later, though Guido doesn’t know the year, Jerry’s moved to Bridgewater.

Son Bruce Reed took over management in the ’70s. His father and mother, Donna Reed, both died months apart in 2000.

Regulars know the drill: Drive in, back into a space, turn headlights on to signal you’re ready to order.

“We can tell when there’s a brand, new customer,” Guido said. They don’t know to back into a parking space and turn headlights on.

“We give them extra-special attention because they’re like, ‘OK, what the heck is this? Where do I go in?

Where do I sit down? What’s going on? We really try to rush out to them and welcome them.”

Jerry’s menu is diverse — appetizers, sides, soups, salads, sandwiches, wraps. Still, cheeseburgers rank No.

Not far behind is the Dorsey, named after the late Al Dorsey, an employee who created the sandwich in the late ’70s. It’s built upon a hard roll from Mancini’s Bakery — “’cause any sandwich is only as good as its bread,” said Guido — followed by two beef patties, barbecue and garlic pepper sauces, cheese, lettuce and mayo.

And there’s the Herbie — grilled ham and American cheese.

“And if ham’s not enough,” Guido said, “then you take ham and throw it in the deep-fryer and have yourself a Burnt Herbie. It is delicious, too. We’re going to do a bacon burger and instead of using bacon, we’re going to use an ounce or two of burnt ham. It tastes just like bacon.”

It’s not uncommon on a busy day, especially in spring and summer, for 1,000 to 1,200 pounds of Idaho Russet Burbank potatoes to be peeled and cut.

“We blanch them — par cook — and put them in food containers and finish them as people order them,” he said.

“Our beef patties are a beautiful blend of 100 percent pure beef — 80 to 20 — the right fat to lean ratio. It’s a little bit bigger patty than most people use.”

Other popular sellers are chicken tenders, steak and fries or chicken and fries — sans lettuce.

“The interesting thing about Jerry’s,” Guido said, “is you can do all these different things. When people commit to go to Jerry’s they have something in mind” — like the Herbie, Dorsey or double cheeseburger, for example.

“We have and continue to do different things,” he said — pot roast, for example, fish during Lent, buffalo chicken sandwich, grilled or breaded chicken wrap, pulled pork, hot dogs.

“We’re going to do a third-pound bacon burger, but bacon burger our way with burnt ham on top of it,” he said. “You have to be on top of trends. We’re thinking, honestly, of doing specialty tacos.”

Open 11 a.m. to midnight seven days a week, Jerry’s attracts a diverse clientele — teenagers on first dates, couples out for a Sunday

drive, grandparents with grandchildren, high school students grabbing a bite after a football game.

“If you have a nice car or bike, on a beautiful spring or summer day, people dust it off. Where should we go? They come to Jerry’s. It really is kind of neat,” Guido said.

“We get busy at Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s because people are coming back in to visit family.”

“It’s memories,” said Kathy Kemerer, an operations manager.

“We feel very blessed,” Guido said.

“We serve more customers year after year than previous years so it continues to trend in the right direction.”

So who invented the steak salad, anyway?

“The town would have killed us.

They’d a hung us up,” he said, if the legendary concoction was removed.

It’s featured on both lunch and dinner menus.

“I just insisted we will have a steak salad,” Denkovich said.

Who invented it? Like much food lore, it’s debatable. Both the Hilltop and Jerry’s Curb Service across the river in Bridgewater stake claim to it.

But Dave Guido, senior vice president of operations for Bruster’s who also helps oversee operations at Jerry’s, said Jerry’s concocted it and has a convincing story from the early 1960s to back it up.

“So it’s my understanding,” Guido said, “that I believe the gentleman was a truck driver that would stop frequently and he wanted basically everything that could be on a steak sandwich, but without the bread.”

To be sure, it was an unusual request, but Donna Reed, wife of founder Jerry Reed, aimed to please.

Atop a bed of lettuce, she piled fries, steak and salad dressing.

“Voila,” Guido said. “The steak salad was born. ... Donna was trying to fill a customer request, and it ended up being pretty darn good.”

Donna was a good saleswoman, too, he said. “I could just hear her saying, “You gotta try this” to customers as she went car to car taking orders.

Guido postulated that the Fair family, who owned the Hilltop, tried Jerry’s steak salad, thought it was good, and put it on the menu.

Of course, Jerry’s took the salad to another level adding tomatoes, carrots and olives.

At one time, eggs were included, too, until Jerry’s started getting more orders without eggs, so they were dropped.

And don’t forget the popular house-made dressings — sweet and sour and Jerry’s Dressing, which Guido described as “like Thousand Island without the relish. We go through gallons and gallons and gallons of it a week.”

The cheese is “100 percent cheddar” and the hand-cut potatoes are Idaho Russet Burbank — a key point, stressed Guido.

“They’ve got the right sugar and starch ratio to it,” he said.

Customers can choose either chopped or sirloin steak grilled to order.

Make no bones about it.

Regardless of who invented it, steak salad is a Beaver County thing.

“I’ve traveled all over the country,” Denkovich said. “Fries on a salad?

You kidding me?”

Out-of-state diners, seeing it on The Fairport’s menu, are often puzzled.

“Usually they ask first,” Denkovich said. “Can you explain it to me, sir?”

The county’s favorite salad often puzzles outof-state diners, but it remains the No. 1 seller, says CEO Dennis Denkovich.

“It’s still our No. 1 seller here,” he said. “We’re known for our prime rib and lobster ravioli, but we still sell more steak salads.

Which just dumbfounds me.”

Gordon estimated between 50 and 70 — more during holidays — are served each week.

“It’s not a complicated thing,” Denkovich said.

Chefs, however, elevate it to an art with topping choices, taking the salad from pedestrian to gourmet.

Possibilities are endless.

Take potatoes, for example.

Idaho, redskin or sweet? Fresh-cut

or frozen? Shoestring, thick-as-afinger or waffle cut? Deep-fried, pan-seared or roasted? Seasoned or simple shake of salt and pepper?

What about grade and cut of steak — New York strip, top round, rib-eye, filet mignon? And cheese — cheddar, Mozzarella, crumbled bleu, Gorgonzola? Even lettuce — romaine, endive, arugula, iceberg?

Don’t even start on dressings.

At The Fairport, Gordon begins with a bed of fresh lettuce — romaine and spring mix — chilled to perfection in professional-grade crispers.

“The carrot goes on bottom, and then the Mozzarella goes, and then the cheddar goes, the eggs should be on the side, the cucumber should be around the edge, the tomatoes should be around the edge,” he said, plating an artistic mélange.

Gordon grates carrots, shreds cheeses, slices hard-boiled egg and uses grape tomatoes.

All the while, a 5-ounce steak — choice, top round dipped in oil and seasoned with Montreal steak seasoning — sizzles on a hot grill.

“You better be a chef, that’s all I gotta say. Most people will over-

cook that or undercook it,” Gordon said, as he also kept watch on potatoes in a deep-fryer.

“We use real potatoes — it’s Idaho. We cut them ourselves,” Gordon said. “We have a chute and then we fry them. So it’s a real potato. It’s not some frozen thing that comes out of a bag.”

Gordon also seasons the fries.

“I got a little secret on them. It is salt and pepper, but there’s one ingredient I’m not going to tell you what it is. It’s a Michigan thing. It’s a good seasoning. Very good.”

The secret to the perfect steak salad is fresh ingredients, of course, but also hitting the right temperature of the steak and fries.

“You want to make sure those fries are hot and want to make sure that steak is perfect,” said Gordon.

He slices the meat, hot off the grill.

“You want to cut it as thin as possible. … It’s more tender when you cut it down that way. It melts in your mouth. … You don’t want a big chunk. You want a nice, thin slice.”

All dressings at The Fairport are made in house, as are rolls and pastries.

“Here, we make everything from scratch,” Gordon said.

Beaver County has a rich history in sports, with easily recognizable names in football, baseball, basketball and beyond. But a number of local athletes have also had national — and, in some cases, international — success in lesser known sports. Here are a few of those less-heralded local legends.

Tim Shaffer, motorsports One of Beaver County’s most decorated auto racers, Tim Shaffer had a run of success beginning at an early age. He was named Rookie of the Year at Sharon Speedway as a 16-year-old and soon began to build his reputation as a sprint car racer.

In 1994, Hopewell Township’s Shaffer made his debut with the All-Stars Circuit of Champions and earned Rookie of the Year honors. He moved up to the World of Outlaws tour in 1999 and earned Rookie of the Year for yet another series.

To enhance its comprehensive medical care, LIFE has added two new doctors to the medical staff.

“With the addition of Dr. Huma Vahora (LIFE Beaver County) and Dr. Molakalmuru Vamadevamurthy (LIFE Lawrence County), we will be able to better direct and manage the care of our participants in conjunction with our partner hospital, Heritage Valley Health System,” said Toni Hively, executive director of Community LIFE Services.

“Our doctors provide a continuity of care for our participants, and they follow up on their medical needs to avoid unnecessary emergency room trips and ultimately prevent hospitalizations,” she continued.

Another advantage to receiving medical care through LIFE is medication management for the participants. With the high cost of co-pays, many seniors don’t take medications as prescribed because they can’t afford them. By enrolling in the LIFE program, participants have the cost of their prescriptions covered, and they have peace of mind that they have a physician they can follow up with if they should encounter any new symptoms.

“Our families feel better knowing that their loved one has a primary doctor at LIFE who can manage chronic conditions so they can enjoy an improved quality of life,” Hively said.

Combining this care with LIFE’s interdisciplinary team oversight, adult day services and homecare services ensures that participants are well supported in their desire to live in their own homes.

tour, but his return to the All-Stars Circuit saw him enjoy the most successful stretch of his career. Shaffer won the series title in 2009, setting off a streak of four straight series titles.

Janice Bolland Tanner, cycling The only cyclist in the Beaver County Sports Hall of Fame, Janice Bolland Tanner of New Brighton spent the first half of the 1990s as a member of two U.S. National Cycling Teams. From 1990 to 1994, she was a member of the U.S. National Road Team.

In 1993, she became a member of the U.S. National Mountain Bike team, with which she continued to race through 1996.

Bolland Tanner won multiple races throughout her career, with her specialty coming in the 50K Team Time Trial.

Her squad won gold at the 1991 U.S. Pan American Games, the 1992 World Championships in Spain and the U.S. National Championships in 1993.

Jack Welch, weightlifter While football reigns supreme in Aliquippa, the city has also produced its fair share of competitive weightlifters.

Few were more decorated than Jack Welch, a three-time national champion in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Welch’s run of success began with the Junior National title in 1969 and continued with Senior National Championships in 1969, 1970 and 1973. When the World Powerlifting Championships began in 1971, Welch was a natural choice to contend for the title. While he finished second in the initial event, he eventually grabbed the crown in 1975.

From 1972 to 1982, no other competitor could match Welch head to head as he ran off an unbeaten string that lasted 10 years. He retired in the 1980s to operate his own weightlifting center in Hopewell Township.

Aliquippa native Steve “Whitey” Pucevich won multiple local and regional bowling championships and participated on the PBA Tour from 1974-76.

Whitey Pucevich, bowling Believed to be the only Beaver County native ever to compete on the Professional Bowlers Association Tour, Whitey Pucevich was a dominant bowler whose consistency lasted well throughout his career.

The Aliquippa native joined the PBA Tour in 1974 and spent a couple of seasons on the circuit before returning to regional and local competitions for the rest of his career. While his time on the PBA Tour didn’t last long, Pucevich was able to capture a regional title in 1975.

He later participated in the BPAA All-Star Tournament, the predecessor to the PBA’s U.S. Open.

Back in the day, Aliquippa’s Tony Gennaro was once a national weightlifting champion family affinity

ALIQUIPPA mong the big-name athletes that the Beaver Valley has spawned — the Tony Dorsetts, Joe Namaths and Mike Ditkas — a number of highly successful athletes get lost in the fold and forgotten.

Tony Gennaro of Aliquippa is one of those athletes.

Gennaro, 85, developed a hobby in his early 20s fitting for a man who worked at the J&L Steel mill in the former steel town of Aliquippa: weightlifting. Diving into Olympic-style lifting and powerlifting, Gennaro was prolific, setting national and world records and accumulating loads of trophies and awards throughout a more than 30-year career in the lower weight classes.

Though Gennaro now suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, his son Paul remembers his father’s career fondly. Gennaro’s infatuation with the sport started on a recommendation from a doctor.

Plagued with back pains, Gennaro needed a fix.

After seeking out consultation from a number of doctors, Gennaro made his way up to the Spears Chiropractic Hospital in Denver.

Doctors quickly diagnosed his problem and recommended lifting weights to help with adjusting his spine.

So Gennaro dove in, eventually doing competition and rising to the top.

He became dedicated to the routine, and it was only natural, given that Gennaro was always a disciplined man in good shape.

Aliquippa’s Tony Gennaro set national and world records in a 30-year weightlifting career.

Gennaro was a vegetarian who also never drank alcohol, so taking care of his body was important to him, and lifting supplemented that.

While most lifters stick to just Olympic-style lifting or just powerlifting, Gennaro did both, lifting generally in the 114- and 123-pound weight classes.

He set the American record for his class in the deadlift in power-

lifting and in the snatch in Olympic weightlifting. The snatch was his specialty, a lift that requires the person to lift the barbell from the ground to overhead in one continuous motion.

“That was unheard of at the time,” Paul said. “You either weightlifted or powerlifted.”

Meanwhile, he still found time to work his job at the steel mill and spend time with his family.

Eventually, though, the lifting took a toll on his body, and he stopped competing. Still, he stayed associated with the sport and fitness in general, helping train numerous people, as well as helping others with dieting.

Among those he helped train is Paul, now 56, along with Paul’s sons.

Paul has a vivid, lasting memory of his father lifting in a competition in West Virginia. As Gennaro prepped for a lift, an announcer’s voice reverberated as he alerted those in attendance that Gennaro would set the world record in his class if he deadlifted the weight in front of him. Paul, 15 at the time, was ecstatic when his father completed the lift. A year later, he started lifting, too.

“That was pretty exciting,” Gennaro said. “That might have got me into powerlifting.”

Paul and his sons have won a number of weightlifting competitions. The torch has been passed from generation to generation.

That torch, though, would have never first existed if it wasn’t for Gennaro’s back problems necessitating lifestyle changes.

But since those problems persisted, Gennaro now has hundreds of trophies and awards, along with a prosperous, though underacknowledged, legacy to show for it.

Senior Care Franciscan Manor PATTERSON TWP. — Franciscan Manor is a senior-living community at 71 Darlington Road in Patterson Township.

Franciscan Manor specializes in individualized programs and services with 24-hour nursing care. It has 90 full- and part-time staff members.

As the order’s numbers dropped, its leaders knew the property had to be sold but were also determined to preserve and restore it. The purchaser, Gordon Health Adventures, followed the order’s wishes.

In June 2005, Franciscan Manor was purchased by Five Star Quality Care, a national health-care company based in Newton, Mass. Although little has changed in the overall operation of Franciscan Manor, being part of Five Star allows management to offer families flexibility.

Plans include increasing marketing efforts and community awareness, plus an increased commitment to staff training and education.

Noteworthy or overlooked: Beaver County’s names of note

 DAVEEN RAE KURUTZ Times Staff When it comes to notable Beaver County residents, there are plenty of big names who have called the county home: Broadway Joe Namath, Christina Aguilera, Henry Mancini and Amber Bkrich, to name a few.

But there are dozens of others who hail from Beaver County who have left their indelible marks on the world, said Alice Kern, president of the Beaver County Genealogy and History Center in Beaver.

“There are a lot of Beaver Countians who have done wonderful things,” Kern said. “But a lot of them are sort of forgotten.”

She points to William Orams, a prominent escaped slave who drilled for oil in Ohioville.

“He came within weeks of beating (Edwin) Drake to the first oil well in Pennsylvania, yet no one knows his name,” she said.

Since the county’s earliest days in the 1800s, there have been notable politicians, innovative artists and architects, veterans and businessmen.

VANPORT TWP. — Tri-State Waters, 327 S. Walnut St. in Vanport Township, has been servicing customers with premium bottled waters and coffee service, as well as filtration systems, for 36 years.

“Part of it was the times,” she said.

“Innovation was not restricted. It was a free-for-all; the pioneer spirit was ingrained in people.”

That wasn’t the only spirit that inspired Beaver County’s greats, she said.

“You could also consider where everyone came from,” Kern said. “They were Scots-Irish and rebellious by nature.

That spirit was prevalent in all of western Pennsylvania.”

The county can lay claim to dozens of prominent people, ranging from pop stars to activists to notable veterans.

Among them:

In government Beaver County is the birthplace of two governors — though neither led Pennsylvania. Louis Benjamin Hanna, the 11th governor of North Dakota, was born in New Brighton. Robert Martin, appointed acting governor of the Oklahoma Territory in 1892, was born in Frankfort Springs.

Aliquippa graduate Jesse Steinfeld served as the 11th surgeon general of the United States. A West Aliquippa native, he served as a doctor in the Korean War and was the driving force behind the nation’s anti-smoking movement.

W.H. Seward Thomson of Beaver was a federal judge appointed by President Woodrow Wilson.

Daniel Agnew, who was born in New Jersey but later lived in Beaver, was chief justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania for six years in the late 1800s.

Gust Avrakotos of Aliquippa was a CIA case officer and Afghan task force chief whose role in the CIA was highlighted in the book “Charlie Wilson’s War.” Mike Veon, a Beaver Falls High School graduate, spent 21 years serving the people of the 14th District. A former Democratic House whip, he was arrested in 2008 and tried and convicted of playing a role in “Bonusgate,” a scheme to use state money to pay bonuses to legislative staffers for campaign work and, later, misusing taxpayer money through a nonprofit organization.

Mike Manzo, a Monaca native, was the chief of staff for state House of Representatives majority leader Bill DeWeese. He was indicted and pleaded guilty for his role in “Bonusgate” and testified against Veon and other lawmakers.

Matthew Quay, who died in Beaver and is buried at Beaver Cemetery and Mausoleum, served in the Union Army during the Civil War and was the chairman of the Republican National Committee in the late 1800s.

Pop culture Songstress and coach on NBC’s “The Voice,” Christina Aguilera often calls Wexford home, but the “Genie in a Bottle” singer grew up in Rochester.

Lightning struck for South Heights native Lou Christie, who made his name singing ’60s hits.

Director Marita Grabiak of Ambridge has worked on her fair share of science fiction shows. A frequent collaborator with producer Joss Whedon, she directed episodes of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Dollhouse,” “Firefly,” “Angel,” “Smallville,” “Dawson’s Creek,” “American Horror Story,” “Bones” and “ER,” among other shows.

Dusty Drake, aka Dino Buffalini of Monaca, is a top-40 country star whose single “One Last Time” was inspired by the Sept. 11 attacks and crash of United Airlines Flight 93.

Donald Kennedy of Beaver is a voice actor who is the man behind characters in adult swim cartoons “Aqua Teen Hunger Force” and “Space Ghost Coast to Coast.”

T

he hoopla that followed a Times story in 2007 that told the true tale of Charlie No Face seems to have died down, save for an occasional urban legend online posting.

In March 2007, The Times published a comprehensive story by then-Times reporter Bob Bauder on Ray Robinson, alternately known as Charlie No Face or the Green Man because of the horrific injuries he suffered in an electrical accident in 1918 in Beaver Falls when he was 8.

Robinson’s visible injuries — he lost his eyes and nose, suffered disfigured lips and ears and had his left arm burned off at the elbow — led to him becoming an almost mythic figure in Beaver County and across western Pennsylvania beginning, apparently, sometime in the 1940s.

Over several decades, cars of teens and the curious would cruise Koppel-New Galilee Road (Route 351) to catch a glimpse of Robinson as he took his regular nighttime walks, frequently posing for photos in exchange for cigarettes.

River Harbour Marina BRIDGEWATER — River Harbour Marina is a family-friendly marina on the Beaver River at 1658 Riverside Drive in Bridgewater, near the new Veterans Bridge.

Established in 2004, the marina provides dockage for jet skis, ski boats, cruisers, pontoons and house boats.

Owner Bob Hodovanich developed a passion for the Beaver River at a young age.

Through hard work and dedication, he has been able to become a dock master on the Beaver River.

River Harbour prides itself on its well-kept marina and clubhouse.

The pavilion has a kitchen available for parties and gatherings for dock customers and their families. It also offers shower and bathroom facilities for boaters. Other amenities include on-site ice, grills and picnic tables.

The gathering areas for boaters include a fire pit and stone patio.

The marina offers a boat ramp and a pumpout station.

The docks include “parallel” and “slip” mooring that can accompany any size vessel. There are also mooring docks for jet ski and small fishing craft. Water and electric hookups are available for boaters, as well.

River Harbour Marina also provides these accommodations for transient boaters.

Beaver Cemetery, Mausoleum VANPORT TWP. — Beaver Cemetery and Mausoleum, 351 Buffalo St. in Vanport Township, has the distinction of being one of the longest-serving institutions in Beaver County.

The cemetery was recognized by the Beaver County Veterans Office as one of the best-maintained cemeteries in the area.

The cemetery is different from most privately owned and church-affiliated cemeteries. More than 100 years ago, a trust fund governed by a voluntary board of trustees was established to ensure maintenance of the cemetery with perpetual care.

The Beaver Cemetery, a nonprofit corporation centrally located in Beaver County, serves families throughout the valley.

The nonprofit organization employs six and is governed by an all-volunteer board of trustees. As a nonprofit, all income generated by the cemetery is only used to meet operational costs, make improvements and provide perpetual care for centuries to come. As a nonsectarian facility, Beaver Cemetery is open to all who choose to take advantage of its historical beauty and tradition of caring.

Beaver Cemetery has a sprinkler system and

ambient lighting.

Cemetery lots are available where either raised-ground or ground-level memorials are permitted.

Private mausoleums within the cemetery grounds are also allowed. There is a special section for families choosing cremation. In the mausoleum, there are above-ground burial crypts and niches.

Family areas are also available.
