THE LATEST NEWS DEBRA IRELAND & LEINSTER TEAM UP Leinster rugby’s charity partners Debra Ireland, the charity that supports people with EB, is calling for volunteers to sign-up for the women’s mini-marathon on June 5th. And those volunteers could win a trip to Leinster’s first away game of the Guinness Pro 12 season next autumn, including four star hotel accommodation and a private jet trip with the team. EB (epidermolysis bullosa) is a genetic condition that causes the skin, both inside and out,

ALLERGAN COMMITS €42 MILLION FOR IRISH OPERATIONS Allergan marked 40 successful years of business in Ireland recently, confirming an additional investment of €42 million in its Irish operations in 2017. The Company, which employs approximately 1,700 people in Ireland, announced details of a new €50,000 Innovation Award Programme with Irish colleges around the country. According to a new survey conducted by GSK, 44% of Irish parents think a distinctive rash is the first symptom of meningitis, despite the fact it often appears after other symptoms, or not at all. To mark World Meningitis Day, GSK has announced the launch of the Tackle Meningitis campaign in partnership with Irish Rugby captain Rory Best and former England Rugby player, Matt Dawson, whose son previously contracted the disease. The initiative is aimed at raising awareness of meningitis, which is a rare but potentially fatal disease. The campaign is backed by Irish charities, Meningitis Research Foundation and ACT for Meningitis.

OILATUM SURVEY FINDINGS ANNOUNCED 90% of Irish parents worry about the products they use on their child’s skin according to a new survey on childrens’ skincare conducted by Oilatum Junior, the Irish-made skincare range for dry skin. The survey was commissioned by GSK, the makers of Oilatum Junior, as part of their ‘Take Comfort in Our Science’ campaign, with over 1,100 parents taking part in the online poll. The campaign is aimed at educating parents about their childrens’ dry skin conditions and the importance of science when it comes to creating the right dermatologically based product for these conditions. The findings show that 55% of children in the survey experienced dry skin while just over half of the children in the survey suffered from eczema. The impact of these conditions can be wide-ranging, with parents reporting symptoms such as physical discomfort, not being able to take part in physical activity and interrupted sleep.

IRISH KIDNEY DIET AWARENESS It is estimated that up to 280,000 individuals in Ireland and more than 70 million individuals worldwide have Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Diet is a critical part of treatment for patients with CKD and a number of dietary changes are necessary. This can be a difficult time for those newly diagnosed and something with which state registered renal dietitians support patients on a daily basis. Irishkidneydiet.ie is the brainchild of a small group of Dietitians from the Renal Interest Group of the Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute. For the last number of years Renal patients have been checking out websites available for their condition. The only sites on offer were often American or Canadian and therefore were not 100% suitable for the Irish patient group (due to differences in teaching methods, renal diet allowances used and availability of food items in recipes).

CELL COMMUNICATION DISCOVERY OPENS UP NEW POSSIBILITIES INTO TREATMENTS FOR CANCER, ALZHEIMER’S AND DIABETES The Horizon 2020 funded project TrainERS coordinated by NUI Galway, has released new findings on how communication is coordinated between the inside and outside of a cell. The discovery is set to open up new avenues for further research into treatments for Alzheimer’s, cancer and diabetes. The discovery was made by researchers at the Laboratory of Cell Death Research and Therapy at the University of Leuven in Belgium. TrainERS is being coordinated by Professor Afshin Samali, CÚRAM Researcher and Professor of Biochemistry and Director of the Apoptosis Research Centre (ARC) at NUI Galway. The findings were published in the scientific journal Molecular Cell of which Professor Samali and his colleagues in Belgium are co-authors. Proteins such as insulin are properly formed in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), one of the biggest membrane structures in the cell. The ER works like an assembly line and folds the proteins into a three-dimensional shape that is essential for them to function. When there is a problem in the ‘protein folding assembly line’, the accumulation of misfolded proteins can lead to diseases such as Alzheimer’s, cancer, and diabetes.

ON THE RANGE How do you source and build a new product range? It's a good question!

W

hat's performing product wise in your pharmacy, and what's not? With social media dictating some of the product choices - and not just in cosmetics - but also in OTC and skin management, it may be a good time to see what's working for you. So, how do we build a new product range? It is about selecting the right products for your stores. Do your market research by window shopping, attendance at fairs and review of trade publications. Window shopping is the easiest way to learn about what the new products and trends are. Retailers should take photos of everything inspirational they see that can be used in their planning. Trade fairs are also very important particularly because you can meet your current suppliers to review their products as well as their competitors’ products. Finally, trade publications (like this one) provide good inspiration on trends and suppliers. Key considerations when building a range are: Avoid the creation of duplication of products that do the same job.

This is one of the greatest temptations that a buyer has when reviewing the different samples from various suppliers. The point is to know when you are only selecting duplicates of another item and not adding true choices. Duplicate products will cause confusion in your range if there are too many similar products. Have a meaningful range of prices.

Each sub-group should have a meaningful range of prices for the products in the range. The number of different prices should reflect the type of 16

merchandise and how wide the range is of the selection. Catering for good better and best is normally a very good idea. Do not have price points that are slightly different as this will again just confuse the customer. Avoid using too many suppliers.

Exclusivity in your area is generally not possible when you deal with too many suppliers and buy small quantities from each. You do not have the same strength as a buyer who buys large quantities from one or two suppliers, nor dependability of service when you work with too many different suppliers. Make sure that you have the right mix of core lines, lines that are a direct replacement for something sold previously to maintain newness. Choose products for in-store impact and presentation and to reflect your company’s ethos and image. You must keep in mind how the range will be seen by the customer. You must be clear on your company’s store concept and image, and work up from there to build the range. Construct your range carefully from a gross margin point of view. Start with the value lines that are comparable with competitors so that you have a very good value perception. Make sure that you have a good margin on the balance

of the range, where maybe you have exclusivity, less of a direct comparison or regular ranges. Where we place products on shelves does also make a difference. High margin items should have pride of place at eye level, then downwards to best sellers, regular sellers and low margin products closest to the floor - keep elderly customers in mind though! Another key lesson to learn here is to give an appropriate number of facings to reflect potential sales and quantities bought. Too small a display will lead to markdowns as it will not sell through, too high means it will sell out before the rest of the range. Something that we do not see enough of is trial products or ranges. For many pharmacies, there is a wide range of products fairly readily available that might enhance the offering to the customer and the profits to the company. Most new products carry more risk than existing products, so proactive trialling can be a great solution. Perhaps a ‘Sale or Return’ deal could be negotiated with a supplier for a new range for a larger store. This fills space but more importantly creates history. Its performance should be reviewed after one month and say three months to see whether it is something for building on or time to get out of it.

Advise your customers suffering with asthma to carry an inhaler with them at all times and to make sure they have an ample supply. � Anyone with an allergy to any prescription medicine, such as

penicillin, should wear a bracelet or necklace which states this fact. In the case of an emergency,

medical personnel will be made aware of their allergy and will know the correct medication to administer without putting their life in danger. Sunscreen Advise your customers to always apply high sun protection factor (SPF) 20 minutes before going out into the sun and to reapply regularly (every 2 hours, more often if they have been swimming or sweating). � Wear a hat and sunglasses. � Apply lip balm with sun protection. � Stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm. � Babies and children under 3 years of age must be kept out of the sun at all times. If children need to be in the sun, use complete sunblock/ high factor and make sure they have clothes with sun protection. Sunburn Ensure your customers know what to do if they get sunburnt. � Stay out of the sun completely until the redness has disappeared. � Go to a nearby pharmacy for a sunburn treatment. � Drink plenty of water. � When the pain begins to disappear, apply a moisturising cream to keep the burnt area moist. � If they have severe sunburn, headaches, nausea, vomiting or dizziness, go to their GP.

Stomach upsets Stomach upsets can be very common on holidays as peoples’ normal dietary routine is interrupted. Advise your customers about the appropriate over-the-counter medicines should this happen. � To avoid food poisoning, check that food is cooked thoroughly and to not eat any food that has been left un-refrigerated or in direct sunlight. � It is important to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration if they are suffering from diarrhoea. In some cases rehydration sachets may be necessary. Insects/Mosquito Bites Most insect bites and stings only cause local reactions, including redness, swelling pain and itching. Tell your customers to bring some insect repellent to prevent this happening. � If stung by a wasp, make sure to remove the sting as soon as possible. Ask them not to use tweezers or to squeeze it out as this can result in release more “poison”. Use a bank card or a dull blade to scrape it out. � Thoroughly wash the area with soap and water. A cool compress or calamine lotion can help cool down the affected area. Apply some antiseptic cream to avoid infection. Some people can suffer severe reactions, such as anaphylactic reactions, which need to be treated immediately by a doctor or A&E department, depending on the severity of the reaction. 18

Here are my top 5 tips to making your pharmacy business more profitable: Use Good Resources To operate a profitable small business, you must constantly evaluate the productivity gains from your employees and resources. You cannot afford to waste with a small company. Do not employ anybody without knowing the potential return on investment for your business. Before buying equipment or supplies, consider the direct or indirect impact the investment has on your bottom line. Use Monthly Sales Goals It is difficult to achieve profits without hard work. If you always focus on monthly sales goals, then you will focus on weekly sales objectives. By

Look for ways to save, for example, could you save €100 per month: reduce banking fees, change to light efficiency bulbs, do routine cleaning etc. Efficiency isn’t just about cost reduction, find ways to get the same or greater value with a lower investment. Increase Revenue The basic principle to optimising your profits lies in your ability to increase your revenue at a higher ratio than your costs. In the short term, you need to generate the maximum value from each client and upsell them additional products and services to get more business. By focusing on your customer experience, that will lead to word of mouth referrals and repeat business. It’s much cheaper to keep a loyal client than to secure a new one.

Pricing Strategy Evaluate your pricing strategies to enhance profits and make your business more profitable. Don’t undersell your services. Precise and correct pricing attracts the right buyers who are willing to pay for quality. Regular discounting establishes a price orientation with clients and minimises gross margin. Basically, the road to profitability includes an emphasis on eliminating waste, optimising revenue, while reducing and controlling costs.

GENERATIONAL Do you wonder about succession and planning for the future? Ted Dwyer has some answers

S

uccession planning for pharmacies is similar to succession planning in other small family businesses with one major exception. It is a big plus if the son or daughter entering the family business is a qualified pharmacist! This is not a prerequisite but would be a help as otherwise a full-time pharmacist has to be employed, which can lead to financial pressure. More importantly, perhaps, is that when a son or daughter comes into the business they need the skills necessary to run the business successfully and profitably. The business of running a pharmacy has become very competitive with many regulations, not to mind competitive market pressures. At City Life, we look after a number of pharmacy customers and my daughter Nora is a pharmacist working in Cork, so it is a business model with which I am familiar. Many pharmacies are now run as limited companies and this makes the succession process relatively easy to plan. As someone who gives financial advice I will always suggest that the first priority should be for the owner/ founder of the pharmacy to achieve financial 28

independence outside of the business at their selected retirement age. This can be done through a company pension or property investments that produce rental income, for example. People ask me how much they need to have in their pension fund. My stock answer over the years is that if we want an income of €50,000 a year, then we need to have close to €1 million in the fund at retirement time. At retirement age, there is always the option to sell the pharmacy, and with the reasonably generous tax treatment for someone retiring from the business they set up, this is definitely something to be considered. However, if like me, we have a son or daughter interested and competent who has decided to take over our business, the option of selling is now gone. In my case, it was our eldest son Eamon who joined me 14 years ago and is now running City Life. If there are a number of children interested in coming into your pharmacy business this will present a dilemma. In reality it is very difficult for a pharmacy to sustain more than one family member unless there are a number of pharmacies in the group. This leads to inevitably tough decisions

for a founder pharmacist like “how do I choose which son or daughter takes over my business?” Hopefully that becomes clear early on depending on third level educational choices along the way. Good succession planning needs both plenty of time and plenty of discussion!

It’s never pleasant - but it happens. Staff theft costs retailers millions every year. Alan Hickey, Head of Legal and Advisory in Peninsula Business services outlines how employers can deal with theft in the workplace.

O

n the range of disciplinary offences that an employee could possibly commit, theft certainly ranks as one of the most serious. Unfortunately, theft in the workplace is an issue that is encountered by pharmacy owners all too often. The problem that employers will face is identifying what steps they should take to prevent theft from occurring in the first place and also how to deal with workplace theft should it occur. Preventing Theft Here are a number of measures that employers can introduce to reduce the likelihood of theft occurring, such as: � Effective written company policies can outline the company’s views on theft and its expectations of its employees in this regard. � A written Disciplinary Procedure can outline what processes would be followed should misconduct arise and, particularly, that 50

dismissal could result from any incidents of theft. � A lot of companies will install CCTV in the workplace. It is advisable that notices are placed in the workplace advising of the use of CCTV and also that cameras are obviously visible so that employees are aware of their presence. Steps to Take if an Employee Is Suspected of Theft The importance of a fair investigation and disciplinary procedure cannot be underestimated. Generally speaking, a fair procedure would be along the following lines: Investigation: the employer should conduct a comprehensive investigation whereby all relevant evidence and witness statements is documented. Importantly, the purpose of this stage is to find evidence/facts. It is also often advisable to suspend the accused employee with pay during the

investigation process. Disciplinary: should the investigation suggest that theft may have occurred then the employee should be invited to disciplinary hearing. In advance of the hearing, the employee should have been notified of their right to be accompanied by a fellow employee or trade union representative at the hearing, they should be notified of the precise allegation, they should receive all relevant evidence, and they should be made aware of what the potential disciplinary sanction might be. Appeal: if the employee receives a disciplinary sanction up to and including dismissal then they do have the right to appeal that decision. Again, the employee has the right to be accompanied at this hearing and this process should be conducted by someone who was not involved in the investigation or disciplinary stage and by someone who is not subordinate to the disciplinary officer.

IPR chats to Tomas Conefrey Conefrey of Conefrey's Pharmacy, Pearse Street, Dublin 2 about community relations and trends on the ground the football team at the moment.

How do you approach community relations? My family have been running our Pharmacy for 62 years and over that time I remember my parents always saying that the local community is our bread and butter. We know a lot of our customers by name and frequently are asked to support local events. Currently we sponsor Markievicz Celtic over 35’s football team and are in our third year supporting them. We provide money for their kits as well as equipment they require. There is a payback from this as the players and their families are good customers. I look at other requests for support on a case-by-case basis. I have a very small budget for this and most of it goes on

What is the single most interesting purchasing trend you’ve noticed this year? Customers are interested in topics now ‘around’ their health. By this I mean e.g. a product which is used to help treat a condition in conjunction with prescribed medicines. A good example of this is the probiotic Alflorex in Irritable Bowl Syndrome. This product gives great results and by word-of-mouth / online reviews it is going from strength-to-strength. Do you find that your customers are influenced by online trends, bloggers, etc. or less so now? Television shows such as Xpose seems to be a great source for our customers as I often hear my staff talking to customers and saying they saw a particular product on Television. I don’t know about Beauty Bloggers as I don’t hear them being mentioned, apart from Suzanne Jackson for example. I have worked with Beauty Bloggers in the past and have found

they are very helpful in promoting products but have also given me great insight into product selection. This is something I wouldn’t normally have access to. If I had a bigger budget and stocked more ranges beauty bloggers would be an excellent way for me to generate interest without necessarily breaking the bank doing so. What are the most prominent health concerns you’re asked about on a daily basis? The top health concerns I’ve noticed over the last few months are Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Joint-Care and Psoriasis. Joint-care has surprised me but based on the age profile of our clientele it makes sense. We have a lot of customers who buy first aid products for sprains and strains and it seems the same people are also starting to take products like Glucosamine to maintain mobility. Irritable Bowel Syndrome also, and probiotics such as Optibac which can be used successfully in combination with prescribed medicines. Buscopan is now available over-the-counter to help treat this condition whereas previously it was prescription-only. Psoriasis seems to be becoming more prominent thanks to new deregulated products such as Dovonex skin ointment which was previously on prescription. So if someone has a flare-up of their psoriasis and they need Dovonex and have had it before they can treat it without needing to see their GP. Irish Pharmacy Retailer
