V Blow dry hair straight using a paddle brush.

V Apply L‘Oreal Techni Art Pli all over hair and sleek back into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck.

V Back comb hair in the ponytail starting at the ends of the hair, spraying hairspray all over with extra spray over the top layer of hair in pony tail.

V Begin to roll the hair from end up to the pony and secure into place with grips.

V Spray with lashings of hairspray to finish.

V Prep hair using a high performance mousse on wet hair.

V Blow dry hair as usual.

V Barrel long from end to root using a Babyliss 32inch tongs.

V Back comb gently at the root and spray with hairspray on each section for hold.

V Pin each curl to the head as you go along.

V Once hair is cool, remove all pins and brush through using a paddle brush to give a softer look V Back comb when desired for added volume and texture.

V Add a holding product such as Kerastase Lacquer Couture to finish.

V Twist the plait into a bun and secure into place.

V Finish by applying lots of Kerastase Lacquer Couture.

V Determine your desired height for the beehive and pin into place.

V Starting on the left side, comb hair across to the right side...criss-crossing pins as you go to secure the hair.

V Now, take the right side of the hair and twist over the hair you have just pinned.

Creating a French twist look in the hair.

Did you know that the Beauty Industry is the 3rd largest industry in the world? Well it is, after food 12:11 and technology. What better reason to choose a career in this wonderfully creative, growing and successful industry.

As the Principal of a Beauty College, I am often asked about careers in the Beauty Industry.

Mostly when people consider a career in beauty they think of salon work, working as a mobile therapist or opening up their own salon. Actually, the opportunities in the beauty industry are so much vaster than you would think.

Let’s look at this in context.

Pharmaceutical giant, Proctor & Gamble own a myriad of brands, including: Olay, Max Factor, Gillette, Pantene, Gucci and the list is endless; their turnover amounted to over €64bn in 2012! L’Oréal, whose portfolio includes Vichy, Lancome, Yves St. Laurent, Shu Uemuru and Kiehls made over €22bn in sales in 2012. Other big players, including Estee Lauder, Johnson & Johnson and Unilever are close behind in sales topping billions of euros.

Armed with this information, you can begin to appreciate the size of the beauty industry, and the opportunities available. With a grounding in beauty therapy, marketing and innate business savvy, you can progress up the ranks of beauty companies. The possibilities are endless.

If you are interested in both beauty and marketing you can do a short beauty course, in the Beauty Academy, which you will complete in one year (part-time).

The Beauty Academy offers a two-month summer course, which runs in July and August, and allows students to qualify

by September. So, if you plan on doing a degree, you will have a trade to back you up, should you apply to a beauty company’s marketing department. Many of these large companies also offer internships to graduates, so a foot in the door may be an advantage.

Natural Hair Removal Using Sugar Paste Helen Dunne, Owner of the Carlton Institute, explains the benefits of hair removal using sugar paste.

The ultimate goal of this technique is to extract the hair in the natural direction of growth.

The ability to do so makes this tech­nique far superior to any other professional method available today. I have been both teaching and carrying out waxing and electrolysis for thirty-four years now. I started with hot beeswax in Bronwyn Conroys, graduated on to strip warm wax, then returned to peel-off wax (hot wax used at a lower temperature with elastic substances added to keep it pliable), and I have had great success with all of the techniques.

Laser arrived and is very successful in certain areas with certain people. Threading filled a gap for lots of people who love it.

There is now a large section of people including males and females of different skin colour who need sugaring, as it works for the very dark to the very pale in both combinations of skin and hair. Sugaring caters for those who suffer with ingrown hairs; are allergic to waxing, have very sensitive skin, have eczema or psoriasis, or those who work in front of the camera and want the fine down removed from the entire face. Sugaring can do all of these things successfully. It gently exfoliates the skin as an added bonus, thus promoting skin cell renewal for younger-looking skin.

“Having hair removed by sugar paste is like having a massage, and the more it is done the weaker the hair grows back - and less of it too,” says Paula, one of our regular clients.

“I fall asleep when it’s being done. I wake up for the bikini line but even that is not so bad. I keep it done regularly so

now it is a piece of cake! The skin is so smooth immediately afterwards, it’s amazing.”

Paula has dry, extremely sensitive skin with fine dry fair wiry hairs, so other methods don’t suit her. She has been waxing for years so the growth is patchy, but this is more suitable for her age as she now is nearing sixty and the skin has become crepy.

Very short hair; even ingrown hair can also be extracted completely in the proper direction of growth. I have had success with 5 days of growth.

The most beneficial time to extract hair is in the early anagen stage of growth. In this stage the hair bulb is at its largest size and when extracted the follicle cycle is interrupted resulting in the partial removal of the follicle wall (inner root sheath made up of DP cells or also known as matrix cells), destroy­ing a percentage of matrix cells. Regular extraction, in the early anagen stage, results in a continual deterioration (or depletion) of the follicle, which in turn leaves a smaller diameter allowance for the next hair to grow in.

This usually results in instant and continued refinement of the hair, and leads to the follicle becoming inactive. The depletion of matrix cells leads to permanent hair re­moval.

Classes run at the Carlton Institute in Dublin over two days, covering the entire body, including: specialised areas, Californian, Brazilian and Hollywood. Hair removal for Male clients techniques are covered in theory, so that therapists who cater for

Fluttering false lashes, teeth whitening, facials, make-up trials and nail artistry that would impress your average celeb is invested in. In recent years, we are seeing truly elegant and demure gowns, similar to that of red carpet status, hanging delicately from their pre-cellulite and post puppy fat frames.

Tips for debs clients V They’re young adults. So, treat them as you would any other client, often they are more informed and savvy than our typical clientele.

V Don’t presume their budget: The final figure can often amaze (shock) you!

V Do suggest a make-up trial: Encourage photos; your idea of smokey and their notion may vary drastically.

V Do recommend a course of facials: Their sebaceous glands may still be inclined to be over-active compared to most, a course of facials is a must to enhance the make-up, and a prime opportunity to educate them to ensure that they have a beneficial skincare regime. These are the clients of the future.

V Do recommend a retail regime: Retail wise, include a skincare class (dermalogica facemapping) or a skincare package. Oilier skin will benefit from a gel cleanser, a slightly astringent based toner, mattifying moisturiser, and perhaps an ‘on the spot treatment balm’, simultaneously banishing wipes from their vocabulary! Drier skins include a cleansing cream, lightweight toner, hydrating serums and spritzes.

Make-Up Tips V Conceal from word go, any darkness under the eyes needs a terracotta colour to counteract a blue hue. Meanwhile, any vascular scarring from blemishes, acne scarring, etc, will require a more yellow toned concealer.

V Less is often more with active acne or seborrheic skin, build the coverage as opposed to painting it on, which will draw attention to the area, both face-to-face and on camera. A mineral make-up such as Fuschia’s mineral starter kit, is ideal, as it is treating this type of skin, and sits flawlessly for the entire evening.

V A ‘matte’ finish for any problematic areas is ideal, as it will not draw as much attention to the region. HD powder, (Make Up For Ever) is ideal, as it corrects while smoothening out any areas of concern, and can be topped up over make-up throughout the night.

V Contouring is rampant at present, do your research and ensure it is chiselled in its final appearance not ‘dirty’ looking, Kim K’s makeup artist's tweet of contouring went viral and certainly has been viewed by many potential debutantes.

V We all know brows are still a statement factor for all, however the fuller look does not sit well on all faces, ensure that you’re well armed to explain to the more petite frames why their brows cannot be as full as Cara Delevingne!

V Decide the corrective techniques you must follow to enhance the natural beauty of their eyes, follow colour guides to ‘pop’ an eye colour; incorporate brightness and warmth into the majority of eye make-up. This can be done with orange or metallic red hues.

V For a particularly smokey eye: use taupe colours, for example in the crease/socket to soften the transition between dark product on the lid to a nude brow area, it also adds dimension and finalises a layered look.

V Be confident with your flicked liner, mark the winged guideline while the eye is open and facing down; to avoid any ‘hook’, stagger it in a fine line to begin, then simply fill in the blanks. A tip is to apply with a pencil first to get an idea, then use gel/ liquid on top once you have the guideline you crave.

V Strip lashes: ensure you measure them against the eye first, double dip your glue and hold. You can cut the outer part of the lash and simply use that rather than the entire strip.

V Individual lashes creates a more subtle look, but don’t be afraid to apply half a packet per eye to give impact. Always do a

The Sponged Look

This nail art is inspired by dresses with graduated layers fading into one another!

This tiger print design will suit a lot of dress colours!

How to do it: Prep the nails as normal.

Apply Gelosophy Base Coat and cure for 1 minute, UV, or 30 seconds LED. Apply two coats of Perfect Flawless White and cure (1 minute, UV, 30 seconds LED).

How to do it: Prep the nails as normal.

Apply Gelosophy Base Coat and cure for 1 minute UV, or 30 seconds LED.

Apply two coats of Perfect Match ‘Black Velvet’ and cure (1 minute UV, or 30 seconds LED).

Take Perfect Match ‘The Box Office’, and clean most of the product off your brush.

Place a drop of your three chosen colours onto a palette, and, using pieces of your gel sponge, dab the colours onto the nail tip, beginning with your lightest colour, then medium, then dark, overlapping the other colours. Cure.

Then place your brush in the lower right corner and drag it out across the nail in a random fashion to create the splashed effect. Cure this coat.

Take Perfect Match ‘Queen of Drums’, and dab the glitter into the corner, lightly dragging outward in whatever direction suits your design. Cure.

Apply a top coat and cure for 2 minutes UV, and 1 min LED. Cleanse and apply cuticle oil.

Repeat the last step to reinforce the colours, and soften the blend. Cure.

You can also lightly dab some glitter, like ‘Hologram Diamond’, onto the free edge and cure.

Apply a top coat and cure for 2 minutes UV, and 1 minute LED. Cleanse and apply cuticle oil.

Prepare two drops of your chosen Perfect Match colours on a palette, cut up a gel sponge into small pieces and dab the colours randomly onto the tip.

Cure for 1 minute UV, or 30 seconds LED. Put a drop of Gelosophy Top Coat and Perfect Match ‘Black Velvet’ onto your palette, and then take a Nail Perfect Micro Steeler size 000, and begin painting the tiger stripe design.

It is important to regularly clean your brush with UV Cleanser and run it through the clear top-coat to keep the brush pointy and pliable.

Regularly freeze the work to maintain the delicacy of your strokes, if you do not, the UV polish will bleed out, and the lines will thicken.

Once your design in complete, cure the design for the appropriate full time.

Apply top coat and cure for 2 mins UV, or 1 min LED. Cleanse and apply cuticle oil.

Debs Nails

Glitter Nails Sequins and crystals inspire this nail look!

How to do it: Prep the nails as normal.

Apply Gelosophy Base Coat and cure for 1 minute UV, or 30 seconds LED. Apply two coats of Perfect Match ‘Black Velvet’, and cure (1 minute UV, 30 seconds LED).

Prepare a small drop of Gelosophy Top Coat on a palette, work this into a gel brush and use it to scoop up some loose NFU ’Oh Bling Bling’ glitter of your choice. Choose at least three different colours, and blend one into the other.

Press the glitter into the tacky layer of the black. Do not drag - as you will remove the tacky layer, and the glitter will not stick.

Press the glitter down with your finger to get a smooth finish.

Cap it with Gelosophy Top Coat; cure for 2 minutes UV, and 30 seconds LED. Apply a second coat of topcoat and cure.

Cleanse the nail with Astonishing Nails UV Cleanse, and run your finger over the top.

If there are any uneven lumps smooth gently over the top with your 180grit buffer, being careful not to affect the colour of the glitter.

Apply a final coat of topcoat and cure.

Cleanse and apply cuticle oil.

Preventing Bullying Worried about bullying in your workplace? Peninsula Business Services advise on how to deal with this unsettling problem What is often viewed as a ‘school playground’ problem can cause real difficulties for employers.

Bullying or harassment in the workplace is unfortunately not at all uncommon, and employers must be aware of how to tackle the problem in order to comply with their duty of care towards employees.

While it isn’t possible for an employee to bring a claim directly to the Labour Relations Commission (LRC) or Employment Appeals Tribunal (EAT) on the grounds of bullying, it is possible to take a claim to the Equality Tribunal for harassment linked to one of the nine grounds for discrimination. Bullying for reasons other than the nine grounds of discrimination is a health and safety issue.

Bullying is not always a visible attack on someone and can be the prevention of another employee’s promotion by blocking their progress, or setting them up to fail by stipulating too high targets.

Employers may find it wise to implement an antibullying policy. Such a policy should give a clear and unambiguous message to all employees that certain types of behaviour will not be tolerated in your workplace. Examples of prohibited behaviour should be given and employees should be made aware that, should these actions be undertaken, they will be dealt with via the company’s disciplinary procedure. The policy should be prominently displayed, or even given to all new employees, as part of an induction procedure.

Senior managers and others with line management responsibilities should receive training in the major issues of bullying. After the training, they should be able to recognise behaviour that constitutes bullying, so that they are prepared to identify occurrences amongst employees. They should also be familiar with the effect that bullying can have on the workplace and on an individual. Therefore, where the manager does not see the bullying itself, they will be able to see who may be being targeted. This, in particular, is significant because victims of bullying may not always feel comfortable with ‘telling on’ their perpetrators.

If instances of bullying are brought to your attention, you should ensure that you take the complaint seriously and investigate it promptly; recording your findings. This can usually be done with your organisation’s grievance and disciplinary procedure. The procedures should be implemented fairly and consistently. Consistency is key to these procedures, as this will strengthen your employees’ trust in the procedure to resolve their problem.

Assure the employee who is alleging bullying that you will act confidentially and sensitively, and then make sure you follow this through. Not doing this will undermine the employee, and make them fear reprisals, reducing confidence in reporting any further occurrences of bullying they may encounter.

Finally, it is important to set a consistent standard of punishment to employees who bully others, so that everyone realises just what their ‘comeuppance’ will be.

Look back at past disciplinary actions against employees who have been found to bully others, and apply those actions to similar circumstances. Implementing a hard line when it comes to bullying will support your zero tolerance stance, and similar treatment across the board will instil confidence in your employees that bullying is treated formally by your organisation.

Thinking about taking the franchising step?

Beauty expert Bronwyn Conroy examines the benefits and possible pitfalls When you start your own business establishing credibility with potential customers is absolutely vital. Being part of an established franchise system gives you that credibility from the first day that you open your doors. People will recognise the brand and what it stands for, before they walk over the threshold.

The larger franchises in the Irish beauty industry tend to be in hairdressing and tanning salons. There are a few once-off franchises, where somebody recognised a good business model/brand name and approached the business quietly to become a franchisee. This works better if the public is not aware that it is a franchise, so they do not think the quality of the service will be compromised.

The franchisor must provide the right business model, and the demand for the product must be there. What the franchisor is selling is support, and the benefits from the power of branding. The advantages of joining a reputable franchise include: opening quicker, success sooner, quickly developing a client base, taking less risk and increasing the likelihood of profitability. The main disadvantage would be the increased cost, the initial fee and the annual percentage of profits thereafter.

They aim to be the first major professional beauty franchise brand. This can work for existing salons looking to rebrand or individuals looking to open new salons.

Many franchise agreements are quite strict on the salon layout, so all salon furniture, systems, etc, must be purchased from the franchisor.

V There is a once-off franchise fee, and then a percentage of profits must be given annually, which can cut into the profits of the franchisee.

V The franchisee might be limited to only offering certain treatments/products, as per the franchise agreement.

If the funding is there, franchising offers structure, support and business expertise to the young entrepreneurial therapist.

You are highly knowledgeable, but nobody will know this unless you demonstrate that knowledge. By speaking publicly at local events within your area of expertise, you can position yourself as an authority in the industry, helping to keep the competition at bay.

If you go to a talk expecting not just to teach, but also to learn from your audience, you create an opportunity to really engage with the people

at the event in a meaningful way, allowing you to seriously impress them.

Increase your visibility

When you speak at an event, remember that you can reach a lot more people than the numbers in the audience. Record your talks, post a video online; take advantage of the content you’ve created by making it accessible to a wider audience on your website, Facebook page or YouTube account.

To get started:

Obviously, you’re passionate about your business, so get ready to talk about it in public. Attend a public speaking course, or join an organisation like ‘Toastmasters’, where you can upskill in presenting your salon business in this new and unique way. Attend events you would like to speak at. Pay attention to the kinds of people who speak and get to know the organisers. Make yourself available - if they are ever short of a speaker, you will get the call. If you establish yourself within local groups, such as women in business, chambers of commerce, etc, then you will be more likely to be invited to speak.

Public speaking is one of the most cost effective and rewarding ways to market your business to local businesses, ladies groups, sporting clubs and networking associations.

The Beauty Stig The Stig is fairly livid this issue, but not at us, for once!

GRRRR! And that’s not directed at you, my dear beauty people. It’s my reaction to the recent ‘Anglo Tapes’ controversy. The quick crisis management retort claiming it was ‘nervous laughter’ doesn’t cut it. But even more annoying is the fact that these people will never be impeached, why? I’ll tell you why, it’s just one big boys' club.

So, as a result of these boyos, and their ilk, we have suffered. Some of us have had businesses closing, have had to let staff go, have struggled with rents, rates and mortgages, and these people laughed all the way through. We must resign ourselves to the fact that, as honest hard-working individuals we can’t do a thing

but keep going. Well, there are things we can do, we can put pressure on the government as individuals.

Then again, like every Irish political controversy, it will be forgotten about in a while.

We can take solace in the fact that the beauty industry in Ireland is beginning to make a slight, but cautious, recovery. So, as always, I am here to remind you to get your plan of action ready. Tiresome, isn’t it?

My constant berating about plans of action? Yes, well, I don’t care - don’t let the likes of these bxxtxds grind you down, get out there and get busy. But certainly don't forget the wrongs which have been done against Irish society.

P.S. If any offence is caused by this rant, then you must be a dodgey politician!

Spa Review

South East Bliss The Oceo Spa at Seafield Golf & Spa Hotel, Gorey, Co. Wexford, has won many prestigious awards, including: Winner of European Residential Spa of the Year 2011, 2012 & 2013 and Winner of The Irish Tatler Hotel Spa of the Year, 2012. Our Spa Spy, a weary, but happy, mother-of-two paid the luxurious oasis of calm a much-needed visit.

My first impression of the Oceo Spa was: ‘Wow!’ Before my treatment started I was taken on a little tour.

The spa has fourteen treatment rooms, an outdoor vitality pool and a huge indoor pool. There are added bonuses, which I assume definitely helped the spa achieve its high profile awards, including: a Turkish style Hammam Suite, aromatherapy suites and an area for make-up, manicure and hairdressing, which I thought was a very good idea for the complete package. The lighting is soft and beautiful, and that lovely smell of quality aromatherapy oils permeates the air. Delightful!

My Treatment My therapist, the very friendly Ciara, went through my skincare regime. I am a stay-at-home mum with two small children and my skincare has definitely fallen to the wayside. During the course of our chat, I admitted that while I would religiously apply moisturiser with sun factor in it, I rarely cleansed my face.

Ciara explained that in fact, I had a lot of built-up dead skin cells and sensitivity, and my skin was very dry.

She proposed the Wrinkle Correcting Ritual by Payot.

She treated my skin with the sensitive range by Payot, which felt absolutely lovely on my skin. I had two masks, including one with freeze-dried algae, along with cleansing and toning, and finally moisturising. She carried out a fabulous arm, hand and scalp massage; I felt really relaxed. When the treatment was finished my skin felt very smooth, and was visibly glowing.

After my facial I was brought to the Relaxation Room, where I was given a raspberry sorbet, and I chilled out for a little while. Afterwards, I went to the Thermal Suite - which was incredible, there was a pool with a jacuzzi in it, various different rooms with saunas and an aromatherapy steamroom. I spent quite a bit of time in the outdoor pool, which is heated to 37°C and has two jacuzzis, it was heavenly!

Since my trip, people have commented on how great my skin looks, I would wholeheartedly recommend the Oceo Spa and Payot skin care!
