would like to introduce you all to the first issue of our newly-named Salon Magazine. That’s right, Beauty Professional Ireland magazine has a brand new name! Within this country of Ireland the treatment sector is a very competitive environment. Some salon owners are operating within the one unit - a beauty, hair and barbering service - or just a hair and beauty service. Other Individual hair or beauty businesses are looking for opportunities to grow their business and one option is to include additional treatment services from parallel sectors. Hair and beauty are no longer two different entities; they are fusing in some cases and often complement each other for the all-encompassing benefit of their clients. Our new name, Salon Magazine represents everything we have always done and reported on in the market place, and we knew that in order to truly serve our readership we had to encompass the entire beauty industry offering: make-up, skincare, hair, barbering, nails, hair removal, tanning, spa, equipment and industry training. We will continue to provide you with all the news and business advice you crave from an Irish-based magazine. NOVALASH’S LASHOFF COMPETITION COMES TO THE UK & IRELAND The annual NovaLash LASHoff competition has been extended to the UK and Ireland, giving certified NovaLash stylists the opportunity to showcase their creativity and a chance to pick up one of two highly coveted awards, the ‘Lash Artist of the Year’ and ‘Fans’ Choice of the Year’ at a celebratory event in Houston, USA. Set up by NovaLash CEO, Sophy Merszei in 2008, the LASHoff Awards are designed to celebrate, honour and promote the passion and creativity delivered by talented NovaLashcertified lash artists all over the world. Now in its 7th year, the competition opens its doors to UK and Ireland-based stylists giving them the chance to represent their country by demonstrating their talent, creativity and passion for the eyelash extension industry. Entrants must submit a 5-minute (maximum) video to showcase their work,

alongside four still images (two before and two after). All entries must be submitted by December 5th 2016 via the online competition portal - http://novalash.com/ lash-off-contest/ This year, the judging panel is made up of an elite and experienced group of Advanced Master stylists, education professors and industry insiders. NovaLash’s very own, Sophy Merszei will also be included in the decision making process. The panel of experts will be looking for lash artists who demonstrate proper NovaLash techniques, who create a balanced look with all lashes separated, and illustrate the NovaLash products used along with advice they offer to clients. WOMEN’S AID NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

EASILOCKS LAUNCHES NEW RANGE Irish entrepreneur Shane O’Sullivan recently launched the Easilocks hair care brand nationwide in the company of celebrity guests including Vogue Williams, Lorraine Keane and Amanda Brunker (pictured above

Women’s Aid is currently recruiting for volunteers for its National Freephone Helpline. The organisation is looking for women, aged 18 and over to play a key role on the Helpline, which supports those experiencing abuse in Ireland. They are looking for warm, empathic women. The volunteers will join a team of committed and dynamic volunteers and develop an understanding of domestic violence through in-depth training and continued vital support while volunteering on the Helpline. DYLAN BRADSHAW TEAM WIN INTERNATIONAL L’OREAL PROFESSIONAL STYLE & COLOUR TROPHY Representing Ireland on a world stage, competing against 13 international finalists, hair stylists Aoife Bradley and Jenny Dawson from the Dylan Bradshaw Salon & Academy won the first ever International L’Oréal Professionel Style & Colour Trophy held in Lisbon, Portugal

on the 25th October. Held at the Meo Arena, the award went to the two Dylan Bradshaw Salon & Academy stylists who beat stiff competition from 13 finalists in front of an international audience of over 2,000 hairdressers from 65 countries. ROE SPA WINS SPA OF THE YEAR (NI) The Spa at Roe Park Resort has been crowned ‘Northern Ireland Spa of the Year’ at the Professional Beauty Regional Awards 2016. Roe Park Resort held off competition from across Northern Ireland to scoop the title at a special awards ceremony held in Manchester. The final decision was made by a panel of judges who independently reviewed each of the nominated Spas. SALON MAGAZINE THE NEW NAME FOR BEAUTY PROFESSIONAL MAGAZINE It’s been the leading and most influential beauty trade magazine in Ireland since 2010. Launching a magazine in the middle of the recession wasn’t easy. readership. There is an increasing crossover in Ireland between the hair and beauty sector. A large segment of the magazine’s readership now offer hair treatments through their beauty businesses, and beauty treatments through their hair businesses. Many have hair and beauty salons running successfully within the one unit. The management of Salon Magazine feel that it would be unfair to ignore this fact within the magazine going forward. Not acknowledging these significant changes in the industry could potentially deny the vast opportunities that are available, to both readers and advertisers. “We are so excited about the new name for our magazine! The budget this year was fairly unremarkable. However, the increase in the self-employed tax credit brings entreprenuers closer to equal treatment. There was more investment this year in childcare and education. Brexit is a worry for small firms. The Small Firms Association (SFA) has criticised Budget 2017 for not recognising the immediate crisis facing small firm exporters in the context of Brexit. SFA Chairman, AJ Noonan, commented: “Even in a Budget with very limited room for manoeuvre, the Government has missed an opportunity to address the many issues facing entrepreneurs, which would assist them in providing additional employment and driving prosperity in all parts of the country. Making our tax system competitive with the UK in areas such as CGT and employee share options must be done today, not in a year’s time. The retention of the 9% VAT rate for the hospitality sector is important in supporting that sector in dealing with Brexit”. “Whilst we welcome the reduction

of the capital gains tax rate for entrepreneurs from 20% to 10%, the retention of the lifetime limit of €1 million will severely limit the impact of the change. We must make Ireland a more attractive destination for starting a business or investing in a small firm. The UK, which is one of our biggest competitors for this investment, has a lifetime limit of Stg£10mn. Party Time! Dylan Bradshaw Educator, Cathal Walshe, tells us about the latest Christmas trends - and talks training too

hristmas is fast approaching, and with that party season well and truly kicks off. The big question we all want to know is what hair look we should sport this festive season? A trend we’ve seen on all the red carpets lately is the simple chic ponytail in all its variations. If we look at the Emmys last month we saw Emily Ratajkowski and Priyanka Chopra sporting Uber glam ponytails with a deep side parting. This look is perfect for a casual night out or to complement a full-on glam party look. - To recreate this look, first prep the hair with a smoothing cream like Matrix Smooth Setter €15 and blow dry smooth. - Second using the arch of your brow as a guide (left or right - depending if you favour a side) start your parting. You want to split the hair as far back as the crown to create an elongated part. - Thirdly comb hair into position, smoothing out any lumps or bumps to create a seamless sleek look and secure the ponytail either at the nape of the neck - or higher if you want more of a swing to the ponytail. - Spray with a light hairspray like Matrix Volume Builder €15 to secure and add hold. And lastly, take a small section from the ponytail, wrap around the elastic to disguise and secure with a bobby pin to complete the look. hen I started in this game I was a teenager, sweeping up, watching and learning. I was an errand boy, a junior, an apprentice. I learned my trade over a number of years. I learned from my father and those more senior to me. It took time. It was four years of slow, intricate attention to detail. I learned from experience, as well as from practice. These days scissors work, layered cuts and blow drying are often abandoned by aspiring barbers in favour of perfecting the fade. Fades are the most popular current hairstyle in Ireland, but this, like all things, will change. Fades are in no way the only style a barber needs to know. Fashion is ever changing. I used to be a master of the mullet and then the faux-hawk, Mohawk, flop top, the step, the wedge, I’ve had customers who were mods, rockers, skins, rudeboys - the customer asks, the customer gets. A good barber should be able to shape all heads and the only way to face these challenges is by having sufficient training. This is exactly the same for hairdressers and hairdressing. Barbering cannot be mastered in a six-week training course. The time spent learning the traditional way is an investment in the future and the best way to prepare for a long, fruitful career as a barber. Monart’s Monks Our Spa Spy travelled to Wexford to Monart Destination Spa to sample all of its delights

T

he leaves were just beginning to fall around the gates of Monart Destination Spa as we drove in. It felt like we were passing into another ‘utopian’ world. It may sound dramatic but with so many awards and recommendations from friends and family, I was bracing myself for relaxation of a superior kind. I was there to try the Shaolin experience. Two masters of the Shaolin Temple in Henan Province are in residency until midDecember. Monart is delightfully luxurious, beautifully laid out and planned, from gardens to furnishings. The rooms are pure luxe; it’s almost as if the feel of the towels is scientifically planned to the last thread. We donned our robes and slippers and started our Monart voyage. We walked the journey from room to the Spa, down a ‘passage of time’ spiral walkway. I received the Shaolin Warrior Massage - an amazing muscle invigorating massage carried out by Master Ma. There was no language exchanged throughout, just a kind of peace existed between us as he masterfully massaged away all cares and worries. At times it was challenging, as all good massages are. But, by the end I felt wonderful. My companion had the Pevonia Elasto-Firm Facial, which made her skin look amazingly fresh and youthful (she’s 68 with good skin, but looked revitalised afterwards). We regrouped in the relaxation area, where we sipped peppermint tea and snuggled under our blankets. I went on a solo trip to the salt grotto, caldarium, hydrotherapy pool and sauna - and enjoyed every wonderful minute of it. We all love (our) kids, but being in a peaceful adult-only five-star location is kind of special! Later, before dinner, it was warm enough to go for a walk around beautifully

landscaped gardens in our robes and slippers. I had heard that the food in Monart is delightful and our dinner that evening did not disappoint. I had the Chargrilled fillet of beef Artichoke Puree, Root Vegetable Galette Chanterelle, Red Wine Jus, my companion had the free range Irish Chicken Supreme, Squash Puree, Lemon Gnocchi, Smoked Bacon & Tarragon Cream. Fabulous desserts were accompanied by a Fra Angelico digestif and an Irish coffee respectively. Food, service and wine recommendations were excellent. To experience a spa destination like Monart is to receive a short, unforgettable education on how all spas should perform in Ireland. There was not one aspect that I could fault them on. I imagine how discerning they must be about the skincare brands they use and the food they source. Quality pervades everything. In the morning, before we departed, I experienced the Qi Dong class with Master Ma, my Shaolin masseuse. You can wear your robe while you do the gentle exercises. hat is a session? It’s question I am regularly asked. “How many sessions a year is allowed?” This is determined by a number of factors: skin type; stage of tan; type of sunbed being used; output of the sunbed and length of the exposure. The European Standard is based upon an exposure limit of 15 kilojoules per square metre per person per annum. The Sunbed Association recommends that operators should put in place procedures to ensure that their customers are:• Aware of their own skin type (by self-assessment). • Made aware of the session limit applicable to their skin type and the equipment being used • Made aware of the maximum exposure limits allowed in the European Standard In this context, the following information is also provided for guidance: Customers should receive a timed exposure to bring them up to their MED (Minimum Erythemal Dose, i.e. the point at which the skin goes slightly red some 8 to 24 hours following exposure to UV). For skin type 2 an individual MED is equivalent to around 250 joules per square metre. So, based on an annual exposure limit of 15,000 joules, this equates to around 60 sessions per person per year (15,000 divided by 250). Provide lots of information about gift vouchers availability, highlighting the benefits of giving a gift voucher to your salon. Offer free gift wrapping. Clients and shoppers appreciate this extra touch and this step adds more perceived value to the purchase. Invest in some eye-catching envelopes, decorative ribbon or small gift boxes for your vouchers and turn it into a real ‘gift’. Include a coupon or offer with purchase. Give the giver a small gift such as a free product, a coupon for a future service they can use themselves, or a salon voucher with a smaller amount already loaded on to it. Incentives to purchase a gift voucher can boost sales and encourage more clients to turn to you instead of a competitor when narrowing down the field of choices. Selling gift vouchers regularly helps to secure your business and the right marketing strategy can help to promote your brand. Use some of these tips, ideas and suggestions to increase gift voucher sales and keep your appointment book full, even during the non-holiday season! Yule Issues It’s coming to the end of the year and everyone is trying to get the last few loose ends tied up in anticipation of the Christmas break and the New Year. Peninsula Business Services takes a look at a few issues that can arise Annual Leave Issues In Ireland, iTts the responsibility of the employer, not the employee, to ensure that employees have received their statutory minimum annual leave, and ultimately if an employee has not received their minimum leave entitlement it is the employer who may get in trouble with NERA, or a tribunal body should the employee take a claim. What can an employer do if the year is coming to an end and some of your employees have not yet used all of their annual leave? Under the Organisation of Working Time Act, an employer is entitled to allocate an employee’s remaining annual leave. The Act does, however, require an employer to give the employee at least 30 days’ notice before allocating the remaining annual leave (although if the employee is agreeable then this is unlikely to be an issue).

Carry Over Annual Leave to the New Year While strictly speaking an employee should receive their minimum annual leave within the current leave year, an employer may carry over some of the employee’s annual leave entitlement to the next leave year, provided the employee is agreeable. While left over annual leave days can be a problem they do not have to be a headache. By implementing one or more of the above an employer can effectively manage a

tricky situation. The best way forward however would be to introduce a clear annual leave policy into an employee’s handbook in order to prevent such leftover days. There are also options, such as Buy Back Policies available.

Trouble-free Christmas parties Do not insist that all staff attend the office Christmas party, even if the event is out of hours, remember that some people have family responsibilities that may prevent them attending. Provide clear written guidance to all employees about acceptable standards of behaviour at work-related social events, equal opportunities and harassment, as well as the disciplinary sanctions that could result from breaches of the rules. Make it clear that fighting, excessive alcohol consumption, the use of illegal drugs, inappropriate behaviour, sexist or racist remarks and comments about sexual orientation, disability, age or religion will not be tolerated. While party policies may seem Scrooge-like, they are appreciated precautions for employers and demonstrate that reasonable action has been taken to protect employees. e all know there are four seasons in one day in Ireland! Hail rain or shine - sure what else would we make small talk about ?! Let’s embrace the cold weather and tackle the repercussions it carries for our skin. • SPF is still a core product. I tend to call it light as opposed to sun protection. It saves a lot of eye rolling. UVA and infrared rays are still penetrating and breaking down the collagen and elastin fibres within the dermal deeper layer of the skin. Light protection should remain our best sellers as we wish to protect against the future not just repair the past  • Hyaluronic acid is a key component to the natural moisturising ability within the skin however interestingly it draws moisture to the skin so if you are constantly in areas of dry heat it is not able to absorb moisture (as there is no moisture to absorb!) so it may not address the

issue as you may wish! • A humidifier is ideal for that reason! Central heating, although  needed, it offers dry heat - while a humidifier will keep the moisture in your environment (this has many heath benefits as opposed to just keeping the skin hydrated )  • Humidity and temperature changes can truly hinder the skin’s exfoliation process. Increasing the exfoliation protocols may be ideal. Similarly as the UVB rays and days are now no longer (were they present ?!) possible we can up the ante on the choice of exfoliation, glycolic, retinols, Kojics and other such  photosensitive ingredients to target the cellular regeneration from deeper within • Retinoid reactions are more prone as the skin’s ph and ability to metabolise  ingredients into the skin are altered. Remain cautionary while advising. An emollient and hydrating regime to coincide with this gamechanging ingredient is essential  • Our immunity is lower as we battle off viruses and bacteria in our surroundings so let’s keep the skin’s  tonic and multi vit levels at an all time high: antioxidants, minerals and amino acids. Let us provide the skin with the building blocks and ingredients to nurture and protect the skin  • Feed the skin from within: literally! The Standard Salon talked to Tina Newman of BeautyBoard, Career Makers Group (BeautyBoard.ie & CIBHT College) about industry standards in SPMU and how important they are What challenges face the beauty industry if standards aren’t upheld? A dip on client confidence and a raise in insurance rates across the board. Clients migrating from beauty to medical practitioners to receive level 4 + treatments - resulting in a massive loss of revenue industry wide. Which can also have a knock-on effect on our regular salon-based treatment. We can expect to see an increase, not just in individual lawsuits, but in class action claims as well. Overall, clients being very unhappy; tarring the entire beauty industry with the results from unqualified semi-permanent make-up practitioners.

What do you think is the solution? It’s threefold in my opinion: Education: Anyone entering these fields should have a minimum of UK level 3 or Irish level 5 Diploma in anatomy, physiology and pathology. They should also be carrying a therapy qualification (minimum facial unit). We believe the best form of education for advanced courses is blended learning, this is a combination of in-house training, practical work on live models and assessments with individual feedback. Not just an isolated two days without full professional back-up from experienced and industry savvy tutors

Are they using qualified tutors with industry specific qualifications? All of our team are qualified tutors, assessors and IQAs. Do they have a back-up and support system in place? Yes, we have developed a virtual learning environment which gives learners access to a wide variety of support materials as well as live tutor support.

Will they be able to provide you with product and ongoing product support? It’s really important to know that if you train with a company that does not hold distribution for a brand, you will have to undergo further training to purchase machines and pigments from known brands! We are the sole distributors for Ecuri Cosmetics (a trusted name in this field since 1984).

What’s the worst case you’ve come across? Regulation: Like other industries facing similar past challenges, Beautyboard.ie and CIBHT College have long fought for new regulation and legislation for advanced therapies such as micropigmentation, microblading and tattooing. We are proud to be associated with VTCT, who are in the process of developing a fully mapped and aligned microblading qualification to stand with their micropigmentation. We also work with recognised insurance companies such as Beauty Professional Insurance and Brian Mullins. We are coming across people who have trained in these ‘pop up shops’ where their trainer is not a qualified tutor and does not have sufficient industry experience. It is not possible to learn these advanced skills with no previous experience and a two-day isolated course working on rubber matts! This type of ‘training course’ is accepting people without prerequisites, industry experience, therapy qualification or a tattooing background. They’re ultimately lawsuits waiting to happen. Transparency: What we mean by transparency, and what you should know before booking a course, is as follows: How long has your chosen training company been in the industry of training? Over the past 24 months we have had to retrain and an inordinate number of students, who have ‘trained’ with other companies. One of the worst cases of training (or the lack thereof) was a student who had paid thousands for her ‘2 day’ training course and had all of her confidence knocked when the tutor told her she “was unable to teach someone who can’t learn”. Worst case treatment: A client who had a tattoo parlour tattoo what can only be described as two very large blue/ black triangles onto the client brow area. We had to remove the pigment and reshape the brow as best we could. As tattoo pigment is very deep and dark it is the most difficult to remove.

Do you think it’s a matter of everyone pulling together? We really feel that it’s a matter of the therapist choosing the correct educational centre and program. Insurers only work with reputable training centres. In terms of popularity, eyebrows, eyeliner and lip tattoos are the most common permanent makeup procedures done. Kevin says eyebrows are 90% of his business, with the other 10% being made up of eyeliner and lip tattoo requests.

Swiss Color Ireland will host a 2-day permanent make-up masterclass by Dolores Srok in February, 2017 in Galway. The Sunbed Association (TSA) offers a number of training options available to members and non-members. Some of the key areas that need to be understood include what UV light is and how the skin tans; skin types and how people react to UV exposure; customer screening and contra-indications; eye protection; record keeping; sunbed maintenance and servicing; health and safety; risk assessment and emergency procedures. An especially popular treatment is the reconstruction of eyebrows using the microblading method. In the first of two-parts Salon chatted to Aleksandra Pawlak-Gudej a micropigmentation trainer and the owner of Butterfly Effect Beauty Salon about the nitty gritty of training in micro-pigmentation. Is permanent make-up permanent? No. The correct name for permanent make-up is semi-permanent make-up. However, its shortened form - permanent make-up - is commonly used. A properly made cosmetic tattoo should persist for up to two years. This, contrary to what clients think, does not mean that for two years eyebrows will look the same. Permanent make-up can discolour or fade unevenly. Thus, every 1-1.5 years an adjustment procedure is recommended. Clients often do not understand the process, because no advertising mentions what in the future may result in the client’s disappointment. To avoid this, one should inform the patient before the procedure about the necessity of treatment every 1-1.5 years. Is permanent make-up a one-step procedure? No. Permanent make-up is not a one-step procedure. To obtain satisfactory results, the treatment should be repeated after about 1-3 months after the first procedure. The number of repetitions depends on

many factors and is not 100% predictable. It depends on the type of skin, external factors, age and the client’s lifestyle.
