Skillbuild Success

Construction SkillBuild competitors with Christian Notley and Alun Jones

Highbury College was the venue for this year’s annual Regional SkillBuild competition – it was also the venue for some great results for Chichester College! Construction students entered several different competitions and emerged victorious with the top five places – Gold, Silver, Bronze, fourth & fifth in the Cabinet Making competition, Gold and fourth in Painting and Decorating and Gold in the Carpentry competitions. In the Painting and Decorating competition competitors were required to work from a design that was provided, interpret requirements and transfer these onto a prefinished board. Their work included painting by hand, cutting in, cutting wallpaper to shape, applying wallpaper and a stencil in timed conditions. Accuracy, a steady hand and staying calm under pressure were all skills demonstrated by Chichester College’s Gold winner, Richard Freshville.

In the Carpentry competition Gold winner, Ben Shotter, had a roof to construct. Using wood and information provided competitors had to interpret the design, cut wood to size, work out dimensions and angles using geometric principles and construct the roof to a finite degree of accuracy. Cabinet making competitors had to create a CD shelving unit out of American white ash. They had to demonstrate the ability to create four different joints including a lapped dovetail, a through dovetail, a mortise and tenon and a housing joint. The ability to plane, champhering and working to degrees of a millimetre accuracy were also tested. Edward ‘Woody’ Harringman came out on top taking gold for his CD unit, George Callow took silver and Alistair Macallum bronze. Christian Notley, who has coached our previous two World Skills Cabinet Makers (Luke Griffiths and Chris Wallis) to UK selection is now involved in UK Skills organisation. He was delighted

at the Chichester College students performances. Although marks for some other regional heats are still to be confirmed he is confident that all our Gold winners and George and Alistair (Cabinet Making Silver and Bronze) will have scored highly enough to go through to the UK finals which will be held in Preston in September. From this competition the next generation of World Skills trainees is selected. Our Furniture students are already exhibiting on a Chichester College Showcase stand at the Skills Show at the NEC in September but in addition they and possibly some of the other competitors are likely to be invited to demonstrate on a UK Skills showcase stand. Well done to all the students who competed, to our SkillBuild winners and to the staff who coached, encouraged and took them to the competition. MORE PHOTOS ON PAGE 2>

College breaks World Record for the World’s Biggest Smoothie On Friday 18th May 2012, Hospitality and Catering students at Chichester College broke the World Record for the World’s Biggest Smoothie. Preparations for the challenge began with the arrival of bananas, strawberries, yoghurt and fruit juice from local suppliers who kindly donated the produce which the students chopped, blended and poured into a huge vat. Kenwood supplied the College with 20 food blenders which were worked hard to create the 1,280 litres of smoothie needed to break the record. The actual work to break the world record began at 7am in the morning and was monitored by adjudicators from Thomas Eggar Solicitors who confirmed the attempt to make the world’s biggest smoothie was a success, having monitored every litre of mixture which was poured into the enormous vat donated by Portsmouth water. The previous world record was set in America with 1240 litres becoming the total the students hoped to break.

The World’s Biggest Smoothie makers, and the official adjudicators Students aimed to break the record by creating 1,300 litres of smoothie however having exhausted the college, local suppliers and staff of all bananas, strawberries and other fruit they stopped at 1,280 litres, 40 litres above the previous world record. The challenge was largely completed by 15 Level 1 Catering and Hospitality

students and their chef lecturer, Michael Oliver, but they also received lots of help from other staff and students, especially towards the end of the challenge when it was all hands to the blender! Students from local schools, visitors to the College’s Food and Travel festival, staff and students all agreed the record breaking smoothie was delicious. Student Chloe Wilkinson said “It’s been really hard work but we all worked together to break the record. It was a really good experience but I’m not in a hurry to peel any more bananas soon! We are all really happy to have been involved in this challenge and proud to have broken the world record”. The Smoothie attempt was carried out as part of the College’s Food and Travel Festival which attracted pupils from local schools who had a go at the round the world cooking stands making food from Australia, Florida, Peru, Japan and South Africa. Staff and visitors enjoyed watching the demos by local chefs and sampling the hog roast. Students from Level 2, Hospitality sold picnic boxes and guests to Goodwood enjoyed lunch in the marquee. Despite the downpour around 2pm, the weather was generally hugely improved on the previous weeks and remained bright until after the smoothie challenge was achieved. The College would like to thank the many sponsors who helped make this world record possible, these included: Kenwood, Munneries, The Southern Cooperative, Tesco, Sainsbury’s Waitrose, Brake Brothers, 3663.

Foundation Degree Students Fundraising Bonanza First Year Foundation Degree Event and Hospitality students have had an excellent year, during which they have developed their event planning skills and, at the same time, raised a substantial amount of money for local organisations. At a cheque presentation ceremony on Tuesday, Chef Lecturer, Paul Rennie, complimented members of the group on their approach to problem solving and working together and said he felt they could all be successful Event Planners in the future’. Diane Jackson then gave a brief description of each event and how much was raised before presenting cheques to representatives of the organisations which had been chosen as beneficiaries. Suzie Timney from Stonepillow explained that every little helps as the problem of homelessness is a real problem but well hidden in the Chichester area. Ann Cooke thanked the students on behalf of the Chestnut Tree Hospice.

Equality & Diversity Update On Friday 1st June the listing of the July 2nd and 3rd Development Day activities is being sent to all managers at the College. The theme for the two days is ‘Disability Awareness’ and we have some excellent learning opportunities lined up. The vast majority of the programme is being supported by representatives from external agencies, this includes MIND, Time to Talk, ICIS, SCOPE, WSCC, Young Carers, Autism Sussex, Enable Me and 4Sight. I would like to also briefly introduce four inspirational contributors to our days who have agreed to come and share their experiences with us. Jessica Longland is a local Film Company Manager. Her journey to overcome the impact of dyslexia, which was not recognised until late on in her education, provides us with an opportunity to explore the difficulties associated with this condition. Her mother Sandie works here as a lecturer and Advanced Practitioner at the College. Sandie has dyscalculia and

so the two have joined forces with Clare Hughes AP to present a session on the 2 conditions. Andy Field, who will be accompanied by his canine partner Emily, is a former England U18 player, having played alongside Martin Johnson. In 2001 Andy broke his neck in a motorbike accident, leaving him partially paralysed. He will talk of the challenges he has overcome to be an outstanding teacher, including being told that he could not be a PE teacher and to teach Business instead. As you may have guessed, Andy now teaches PE and excels at it. Phil Packer MBE suffered spinal cord injury in 2008 whilst serving with Her Majesty’s Forces. In 2009 he rowed the Channel, walked the London Marathon and hauled himself up El Capitan. Each subsequent year Phil has risen to a number of different challenges. He is currently completing a year long project to walk 2012 miles around the UK to raise awareness of the adversity faced by young people and to raise funds to build his British Inspiration Trust Centre where BRIT mentors will support young people

from all over the country. Come and hear him speak on Tuesday 3rd July. Toby Hewson is an ex-Chichester College student. Toby was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a condition affecting the ability to control muscles. Toby is unable to talk and uses a speech synthesiser to communicate; he also uses a motorised wheelchair to get around. He lives independently employing full time support assistants to help him with his everyday needs. This has not stopped Toby who now travels the world supporting a number of charitable causes and organisations. Toby will help you understand the difficulties that he has had to overcome, particularly in relation to communication. Do talk to your managers who will be organising attendance at these sessions over the 2 days. We are sure that you will be inspired and gain a greater understanding of the challenges faced by people with a range of disabilities which you will be able to apply to your work. Bomb Disposal Public Services students were given an interesting and inspiring talk by Dan Herridge, from the Royal Navy Bomb Disposal Squad. Dan is an ex-Chichester College student who completed his National Diploma Public Services in 1999. After leaving college he jointed the navy where he underwent rigorous training. He has now reached the rank of Lieutenant Commander and said he loves the Navy and particularly enjoys “making things go bang”. He started in the Navy as a warfare officer who involved making sure his ship avoided collision, acting as officer on the watch and being responsible for the weapons systems. He is now a mine clearance diving officer. Swimming up to mines has its risks but Dan enjoys his job. Dan said “from the age of five I always wanted to be a Firemen, but the Public Service course opened my eyes to other possibilities, especially the Navy. The teaching staff were excellent and supportive. I really enjoy coming back to Chichester College and it is a pleasure to bring the unit down here”. After his talk students had lots of questions for him. He then demonstrated two remote disposal vehicles which can destroy IUDs on cars or when the tide is out and they are revealed on the shoreline. Students also had a go with the vehicles (worth over £50,000 each) and also put on kevlar protective suit (weighing over 5 stone) and tried out the oxygen equipment to see how it feels.

Dan Herridge with £50,000 remote control bomb disposal vehicle Following his talk students said how interesting and inspirational it had been but also how it had brought home to them the real dangers that our service men

and women face. They had particularly enjoyed having an ex student return to college to share his experiences with them.

Floristry Demonstrators Recruited Hairdressing students at the Charity Event

Butterfly Cancer Charity Event On Tuesday 22nd May the Level 2 Hairdressing students organised and ran an event to raise money for the Butterfly Cancer Charity. They chose the charity because a member of the group and her family have been personally impacted by breast cancer.

The students decorated the salon in pink bows and balloons and wore an item of pink to mark the occasion. They offered hairdressing services and nail painting to the college staff and students for a small donation. They also made and sold cakes to raise as much money as they could. In total £50 was raised and Sue Sweeney, Section Leader for Hairdressing, thanked all of the staff and students who contributed to this worthwhile cause.

Fabian Chambers, a Level 3 Floristry student demonstrated his arranging skills at the Spring and Garden Leisure Show at Ardingly on Sun 6th May and Mon 7th May. As a result of his painstaking and creative work he was approached by National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies (NAFAS) who asked him to train to be a demonstrator for them. Dee Watkins, his Course Leader, and Gaenor Circus (Level 2 Floristry student) have also been approached. They all start their training in the autumn.

L2 Public Services in Brecon This trip was for three groups over a three-week period for the Level 2 Public Services Course. It was used to consolidate the teaching and learning for three of their modules, mainly the Adventurous Activities in the Public Services, but is also used for crossreference in the Expedition Skills and Public Service Skills. The activities undertaken were varied and demanding. On arrival at the Whit Hart Bunk space in the village of Taly bonton-Usk the group are quickly settled into their bunk space and then immediately given a practical lesson in Canoeing on the Brecon to Monmouth canal. This activity was repeated everyday during the residential. On Tuesday the group went to the Royal Navy Outdoor Activities centre by the Taly bont reservour. An ex student ( Nutty Nutborne 1999) who is now a member of the Royal Navy , is working at this centre as a Leading Physical Trainer at the moment. Just goes to show what you can aspire to. Nutty is a great advert for the students as he was once one of them! Whilst there, everyone is kitted out with caving equipment and then off to Clydach Gorge. Here the

Then they progressed to a disused mine shaft access tunnel with lights! Finally they descended into the Gorge, a Level 3 cave with running water but no mod cons! waterfalls at Caerfanell and conducted a series of activities to test the students nerve, judgement and courage. On Wednesday the group travelled to Neuadd Reseviour and climbed Pen-YFan, Corn Du and Cribyn in the horse shoe complex during a long and trying day that pushed the students to the extreme but also gave the some excellent views.

The worm hole is exactly what it’s name implies and as such is very tight but incredibly challenging, only those who wanted to attempt it were allowed to – it also depends on the size of the student! On completion of the Gorge exercise we then travelled to the

On Thursday the day was spent at the Llangorse Climbing Centre where the students were confronted with some extreme climbs, abseiling and a zip wire. The trip was challenging but a fantastic experience for all the students. Thanks to Ray Ewins for organising it.

E-Safety Tip of the Week

ILT Tip of the Week

Google have been in the news recently as there are claims they deliberately harvested information from millions of UK home computers. They downloaded emails, text messages, photographs and other private data from wi-fi networks as they photographed virtually every road in the country. To my surprise, it emerged that around one in four home networks in the UK are thought to be unsecured – lacking password protection. That means anyone with know –how could easily steal and use personal data for a whole host of criminal purposes. So, this week’s tip: If you have a wireless network doublecheck it is secured with a safe and secure password! How? Right click on the wireless icon on the task bar (at the foot of the screen) and wait for visible networks to appear. You should see your network with an open or closed padlock against it. If it is open, it’s almost certainly unsecured and the best thing is to contact your internet service provider or go on their home pages to find instructions to change it. Keith Burnett

It’s much more convenient and very easy to set up. How? 1. On the Tools menu, click Address Book. 2. Underneath the Address heading select Contacts from the drop-down menu 3. On the File menu, click New Entry. 4. Under Select the entry type, click New Distribution List.

Pamper Evening supports Marie Curie Twenty staff and students gave up their time to organise and run a pamper evening for participants of a Chichester ladies group in aid of the Marie Curie charity. Those who attended the pamper event enjoyed a wonderful evening of facials, massage, reflexology, manicure and pedicure and in the process an impressive £278 was raised for the charity. Carole Richardson was the link between the college and the ladies who attended the event. She thanked the Beauty staff and students saying ‘We had a fantastic evening and everyone left with a smile on their face clutching a price list! Your team

were amazing, particularly Julie McFadden who organised it all, ably assisted by Linda, but they were all fantastic. The students were wonderful especially the ones called in at short notice and everyone commented on how lovely they were and the fact that they all obviously had a passion for their courses and enjoyed what they were doing. Special thanks should go to Keri, Laura, Wendy and Sarah who organised the tea, coffee and raffle for me while I was having a facial! Everyone was made to feel very welcome and most have asked when we can come again!’ June Brent, CTM Hair and Beauty said “I am delighted that it was such a success and that the ladies felt well pampered. We look forward to welcoming them all back again next academic year. The staff and students volunteered their time freely. We are always pleased to support such a worthy cause”.
