Student Dan Tarrant takes Gold at Youth Olympics

Dan Trapper – Gold Youth Olympics/Gold Medal Winner

Dan Tarrant, a Peter Jones Enterprise Academy (PJEA) student, is celebrating winning a gold in shooting at the Youth Olympics in Sydney last month. This is a wonderful achievement for Dan, who fought hard against other international athletes, representing, amongst others, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Fiji to secure his win. Having begun shooting at the age of eleven, Dan found himself competing for the county and then nationwide, before qualifying to represent Great Britain.

Scooping a gold medal for his shooting prowess is still an achievement that Dan can’t quite believe. “Shooting for Great Britain in 2012 has been my biggest achievement yet. I still don’t think it has sunk in!”

pressure is really on to ensure that he can balance everything. Dan is certainly a very determined individual though; with high profiled achievements at such a young age providing a real testament to his capabilities.

Hoping to qualify for the Rio Olympics in 2016 and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014. Dan continues to train hard with local Findon and Chichester shooting clubs who offer Dan the continuous guidance he requires, in order to compete at such a high standard. Balancing college, training and also running a new business has presented the talented individual with a different kind of challenge and the

As a student on the PJEA, Dan’s also been applying his entrepreneurial skills, drive and determination to establish a small, local business, specialising in the sale of pre-owned Bang and Olufsen products. products, ensuring steady company growth for the new business. Alongside running a successful business, studying at the college and training regularly, Dan has been selected for the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS), as recognition for his shooting abilities. Nominated by the NGB, their tailored support package provides Dan support with coaching, physiotherapy, strength and conditioning training, lifestyle and education support as well as access to the TASS medical programme, all ensuring he remains at the top of his game. Valued at around £3500, the TASS Award supports athletes like Dan, aged 16 or over, who are studying on a recognised higher or further education programme in England and whom are eligible to represent Great Britain or England (as appropriate) in their chosen sport.

‘Snow Joke’ as College Closes The recent snowfall not only delayed the last issue of Chichester Matters but also resulted in a half day closure for our Chichester and Brinsbury campuses. Our Selsey and Bersted nurseries ploughed on and remained open for the full day. Despite the weather, there were also quite a number of students that remained on the campus, as well as staff, who were there to see that A level exams took place, to feed and care for the animals and manage the halls of residence. Well done to everyone who kept the show on the road! Although the campus looked pretty on Friday afternoon, it also looked

a little bleak too. The snow was much enjoyed by our international students however, many of whom experienced fresh snowfall for the first time. The following Monday it was back to business as usual!

Hoping to qualify for the European Championships in Cyprus this month and also the World Championships in Mexico in March, Dan has his heart set on achieving all he can with the sport that he loves. Dan said “The fact that I am still only 16 means that this is just the beginning for me; I am really looking forward to what the future has in store as I know I have to work hard if I am to succeed.” We wish Dan every success!

Award Winning Chemists Celebrating both academic potential and achievement, we were delighted to learn that two of our hard-working chemists have recently both both won prestigious awards. Katherine Bilham achieved a Crest Gold Award whilst working on a Nuffield Bursary funded placement with Dr Jon Mabley in the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences at the University of Brighton. Katherine, who is studying AS Chemistry, had a rare opportunity

development and use of fuel cells by one of the university postgraduates and then a guided tour of some of the teaching facilities and chemistry labs used by the undergraduate students. We were then given a short talk by Professor Neil Ward, Professor in Analytical Chemistry at Surrey, who then presented each student with a certificate and a book token.

Well done Katherine!

All the students were proud to be recognised for their interest and enthusiasm for chemistry and gained a useful insight into the prospects and opportunities awaiting them after their degree studies.

Mark Nason, CTM, Animal Management, Equine & Dog Grooming Every year the southern group of the Society of Chemical Industry likes to reward enthusiastic students who are thinking of studying Chemistry, or a related subject at university. In 2012 I was extremely pleased to nominate Harry Williams, one of our A2 chemists. He was one of our best achievers at AS level and has developed a genuine interest and enthusiasm for the subject which he hopes to develop further as an undergraduate next year. Harry, his parents and I were invited to attend a presentation ceremony at Surrey University in October. We were given a very interesting lecture on the

Young Entrepreneurs Impress Business Champions On Wednesday 30 January, thirteen young entrepreneurs from the Chichester College Peter Jones Enterprise Academy presented their business ideas to a panel of nine local business champions, in the hope of securing investment, mentoring, work placement opportunities and good advice. Studying the one year L3 Diploma in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, which supports their business start-ups, the students have spent the past five months developing their business concepts and creating draft business plans. Taking it in turns to pitch, the majority of students were hugely successful in securing both investment and mentoring. In particular Sofi Harrison wowed the panel with her high quality artistic handmade cakes and confectionary, securing an investment of £4,000 through offers of loans and equity from local business champions Tony Dignum ,of The Dignum Opportunities Trust and Andrew Green, Deputy Principal and Chief Executive of Brighton Film School, who were both keen to see her products hit the luxury food market.

Sofi first developed her business idea after working for top chef’s Gordon Ramsey and Heston Blumenthal and found her passion was for creating her own desserts. Sofi is now eager to purchase the essential

With many of the students already trading, the feedback from the business experts was invaluable, strengthening their business and maximising their potential for development.

Amongst the eight strong panel of Business Champions was Alan Edmonds, from the Chichester Chamber of Commerce. He thoroughly enjoyed his participation in the inspiring event and said ‘’You can teach entrepreneurship! This has been demonstrated to great effect by Chichester College, Peter Jones Enterprise Academy Students who all ‘wowed’ the panel of business experts when they ‘pitched’ their business ideas and plans. The students undertook this task with great enthusiasm, talent and knowledge.”

The next challenge for the Diploma students, is to develop their sales and marketing strategies and implement their business ideas. They are also busy researching opportunities for four week consultancy work placements in March, where they will work on a specific project for another company, developing those all important skills for running their own businesses. There’s certainly no stopping these budding entrepreneurs!

Rave reviews for James & the Giant Peach An example of collaborative working at its best has resulted in record audiences attending the first College IntAct Production this year. James & the Giant peach, the popular Roald Dahl story, is about a young boy who is forced to live with his nasty aunts after his parents die in an unfortunate accident. The fantastical tale of a lonely child finding out he can set sail to pastures new in a giant and magical peach appeals to the child in all of us; it’s no wonder then why 20 of the 22 performances have been delivered to enchanted local primary school children over the past fortnight. The ten strong cast of Professional Development Diploma Students have worked extremely hard, rehearsing and delivering the demanding performances, likened as being the closest example of what it is like to work as part of a small scale touring theatre company. professional experience has extended across the boards to the college’s Stage Management teams and has also involved L1 Carpentry E Routes students too. They were responsible for creating the clever backdrop, sound and lighting, all essential for providing the stunning aesthetic and visual effects required to set the scene. Loraine Edwards, Director and Section Leader from Creative & Performing Arts said “We are delighted all of the performances have sold out. All who have attended have thoroughly enjoyed themselves, with many experiencing the theatre for the first time in their lives. Everyone has worked really hard, adopting the attitude of the ‘show comes first’; the success of the show has been a real testament to that”.

Enterprising Futures Our Enterprise Society is now working actively within the college. The Society’s mission is to provide work experience for students, offering them help and support with starting their own businesses, working in partnership with sponsors on community projects and providing opportunities for any college student to sell their work.

Enterprise Education The Enterprise Society, Xpress Yourself, is run collaboratively by FE and HE students to promote college-wide enterprise activities and support the growth of new business initiatives. ‘Xpress Yourself’ aims to invest NACUE funding in sustainable business opportunities, offering work experience opportunities and the promotion of college courses, services and products to the wider community. Offering distinct services, Xpress Yourself fosters the skills of entrepreneurial activity and can be mapped to the CBI core competencies for employability.

Cee Cee Productions The Society plans to set up a media company ‘Cee Cee Productions’ which responds to both internal and external digital media requests. Internal demand for promotional media clips to promote both courses and course events is growing and currently exceeds the workload for students to complete in class as part of their coursework. Students receive external

NATO’s Talk to PJEA Students Royal Naval leader Rear Admiral Peter Hudson CBE inspired students at Chichester College with his talk on similarities with leadership in business and war recently. He advised our students to “Play to their strengths, develop their weaknesses and be honest about them”.

media requests, which provide excellent work experience opportunities and income generating opportunities. These enterprise students are already working with external clients, such as The Westwood Golf Academy and Landcruise Motorhome Hire, as well as undertaking internal work to promote our Music programmes to our international partners.

YES Young Enterprise Society Another arm to the Enterprise shops is ‘YES’ or Young Enterprise Society which plans to support the growth of social enterprise within college. The team aspires to work with a local charitable organisation, providing a reliable and effective business framework. The partnership will strive to generate income for the organisation and provide community based projects for students on cross-college vocational programmes. The enterprise is currently in the planning stages of providing help to a community centre that is in need of a DIY SOS style make over, presenting an exciting challenge to all involved. Before taking up his new post as the Commander of NATO’s Maritime Command HQ in Northwood, the Rear Admiral visited Chichester College Business &Management and Peter Jones Enterprise Academy students to share the Navy’s ten principles of leadership and the seven questions you must ask yourself before going into any operation or business. Peter explained the HM Navy approach of looking at new operations on three levels – strategic, operational and tactical; and how the success relies on bringing the team with you and considering that “Leadership is a personal trait – you shape your leadership style in the way that suits and makes you tick”.

E-Go is an initiative looking to offer students on college programmes, opportunities to sell and promote their products and services at fortnightly. As from March, Xpress Yourself will have a presence in the Chichester City’s farmers market. The idea is for certain areas of the College to sell the items made during their studies. For example, goods like in floristry, hospitality and furniture making. As part of the enterprise, the students will be required to produce a small business plan to cover the cost of the stall and any ingredients/material costs when selling their products, offering them great firsthand business experience.

Precision Precision supports business start-ups and investment opportunities. There are currently 22 College students looking to set up their own business and will complete a one-day training event with ongoing mentorship from a well known business advocate. Additional funding, seed investment and mentorship packages are shared and promoted to this group. The first group of students who will undergo a day’s training and be entitled to ‘pitch’ for some start-up funding will take place on Thursday 7 February. For further information about the Enterprise Shops, you are encouraged to contact Andy Davies Course Leader on ext 2037, within the Media department at Chichester College. Academy said “It is so valuable to be able to link the theory and business challenges students have within college to real life experience. We are fortunate that Peter took the time to talk to us and share his extensive experience with us. It was a fascinating talk with students and staff really enjoying it. I am sure that when the students launch their own businesses they will reflect on this experience and use that knowledge to help them succeed.”

The Rear Admiral’s talk provoked many questions related to his vast experience in HM Navy and the conflicts he has been involved in, especially his recent experience leading the campaign against piracy off Somalia. Jean Howes, Business Lecturer at the College’s Peter Jones Enterprise

‘Save Emperor Way’ Logo Competition Fishbourne Parish Council have been campaigning to keep the cycle path running through the Roman Palace in Fishbourne for the past six months, and support has been growing to keep this much used path open. To continue to promote this campaign,

students attending a Chichester College Business and Administration course were asked to design a logo that could be used for their campaign. Jean Howes, Lecturer on the ‘Business and Administration Award’ at the College’s Bognor Regis Training Centre, was

teaching students how to design logos and use them on business documents. Jean said “This was the perfect opportunity for them to design a logo that would be actually used. It is brilliant when students are able to use what they have practised in the real world”. Christine Waters produced the winning design and was presented with a voucher. Christine told us “I could never have done this before without the help I had from Jean and Jo. I was thrilled when Jean rang in December to say I had won”. Sports Maker Update

New initiatives Badminton

Having been in post for a few weeks now, College Sports Maker Colin Hunwick is steadily finding his feet, meeting as many staff and students as possible and listening to what we all would like to see in way of a sports provision here. Since announcing his new role a fortnight ago, Colin has been busy getting in to the local community building links with local clients making sure they are kitemarked and accredited before coming in with their clubs to the college. Colin continues to liaise with governing bodies, or the leaders of sports in the country, seeking any funding opportunities available, then providing varied and exciting courses where possible. Speaking about his active role Colin said “The real task is ensuring that any external sports providers we work with can provide a great quality service”. Working alongside the student enrichment team, ChiXtra, Colin can be located in Plus Point. Sports News Fixtures have been adversely affected by the wintry weather since returning from the Christmas break, with the chief reason for cancellations being frozen pitches, which prevent football studs going in and being safe to play on.

Safer Internet Day 5th February 2013: Connect with Respect to consider how their actions may adversely affect other people. With a little bit more forethought, many young people (and adults) could easily save themselves a lot of trouble.

Creating a backlog of matches in some areas, particularly in the SSFA men’s league and only three official matches hosted, results are limited:

Here are five top tips:  Emails or text messages: Always read the message carefully. Sleep on it if necessary and think about your online ‘Netiquette’ - if you wouldn’t say it, why would you write it?

January 9 Against Brockenhurst in the Men’s football BCS Cup competition – we lost 2-1.

January 16 Against Collyers BCS competition we lost 5-2 in very unfavourable underfoot frozen conditions. So well done for David Daniels keeping the match alive albeit in adverse conditions. Against East Berkshire in a refixtured ECFA game. Darin Killpartrick’s elite squad won 5-4.

Safer Internet Day 2013 will take place on 5th February, marking the tenth anniversary of the event. The theme for Safer Internet Day 2013 is Online Rights and Responsibilities with the slogan “Connect with Respect”.

There will be stands in Coasters, Chichester Campus, and the Sussex Restaurant at Brinsbury from 12.15 to 1.30pm.

 Social Networking: Choose and accept ‘friends’ carefully. If, say, a Facebook page of a colleague or friend is open, resist the temptation to post a note on their behalf – the consequences for this prank have led to many unexpected consequences!
