HMRC issues new tax guidance for beauty & hair professionals

If you rent a chair or space within an existing beauty or hair salon, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has issued new guidance to help confirm your employment status for tax purposes.

The guidance is aimed at professionals who pay an agreed fee or percentage of their income to use a chair or space within a salon and includes how to use HMRC’s Check Employment Status for Tax (CEST) tool.

It highlights examples of common scenarios that indicate whether an individual is considered employed (such as having set working hours determined by the salon) or self-employed (for example, setting their own prices and maintaining their own client list).

As well as outlining information about VAT registration and the importance of written agreements when renting salon space, a video within the guidance explains that clarifying employment status isn’t a choice and outlines different tax obligations based on your status.

The inquiry will seek evidence on the principle that UV safety is a basic need and that SPF products is a year-round issue. It will also report on the affordability and accessibility of UV safety and the effectiveness of SPF product education. In addition, the inquiry will seek to establish whether a change in approach can help to relieve the burden on the NHS.

Any individual or group with expertise and experience relating to UV safety, including the public, industry bodies and academics, is invited to submit written evidence to the inquiry by 31st October 2025, with oral evidence sessions scheduled for later this year.

Following the conclusion of the UV Safety inquiry, the Beauty and Wellbeing APPG is expected to provide recommendations to the UK Government in spring 2026.

WHO WE ARE

BEHIND THE CHAIR

SSimply put, occupational identity is how we see ourselves at work. It’s more than just our job, it is a meaningful part of who we are. So, how is our occupational identity formed in hair and beauty?

Hairdressers and beauty therapists take great pride in their work, building their confidence and occupational self-esteem through client satisfaction, positive feedback and strong client relationships. The loyalty of returning clients and the opportunity to make others feel and look their best provides us with a unique sense of purpose. In our industry, when a client says “you’re the only one I trust with my hair” or “I only let you do my eyebrows”, it’s one of the highest forms of professional validation. It reflects the skill, deep trust of our clients and delivers a meaningful boost to the hairdresser or beauty therapist’s self-esteem and sense of self-worth. Few careers offer this blend of creativity, connection and fulfilment; this is what makes the work truly rewarding. So why is occupational identity even important for therapists? A strong occupational identity can improve productivity, deepen commitment and increase job satisfaction. It brings a sense of belonging, pride and purpose to the work, and motivation to succeed is not just about financial rewards. In the hair and beauty industry occupational identity is driven by passion, creativity and the desire to make a positive impact on others. But our occupational identity isn’t always strong or positively influenced. One of the biggest threats to occupational identity in hair and beauty is a single word: “only”. We’ve all heard it, been on the receiving end of it or said it ourselves; “only a hairdresser” or “only a beautician”. It’s a small word with a big impact, one that can instantly undermine the work you do, making the job feel insignificant and damaging our occupational identity. It chips away at the pride we take in our work and over time eats away at our self-esteem, leaving many feeling undervalued, as if it’s a job not worth doing.

Lauren Murphy explores occupational identity in the hair and beauty industry.
“Few careers offer a blend of creativity, connection and fulfilment”

The pressure of social media

Social media brings new challenges for the occupational identity of hairdressers and beauty therapists, reshaping how we are seen and even how we define ourselves. The majority of salons have at least one, if not several, social media platforms and maintaining an online presence is no longer optional but essential to building a client base and promoting our profession.

In the digital age, success is often measured by the number of likes, shares and level of engagement, which don’t reflect the true value of our work. When the recognition you receive online, or the lack of it, doesn’t reflect the quality of your work, it can leave you feeling exposed, undervalued and doubting your skills.

This has created a growing pressure, given the fact that hair and beauty content is one of the most heavily saturated categories on social media, making it increasingly difficult to stand out. Therefore, to stay relevant and competitive, there is increasing pressure to create content and market yourself online.

The occupational identity has evolved, and today’s hairdresser or beauty therapist is also a content creator and social media marketer. It is important to remember that social media metrics are not a reflection of our work or success, true value lies in our expertise and client satisfaction.

Occupational identity in hair and beauty is so much more than what people outside the industry often realise. Ironically, while the work is of a visual and aesthetic nature, the true depth of the occupation, the skill, the emotion and the connections you build with your clients, is largely invisible. We should be able to tell the world with pride that we’re professionals in the hair and beauty industry. Our occupational identity should be worn like a badge of honour, not hidden or belittled.

Lauren Murphy (pictured right) is a PhD researcher at the Technological University of The Shannon (TUS) undertaking a study on occupational stigma and self-esteem in the hair and beauty industry.

Dr Catríona Murphy is a PhD supervisor, researcher and lecturer at the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS).

IN IT FOR THE Preventing

exposure.LONG-HAUL

and addressing skin damage caused by heat, humidity and UV

DDuring the coming months, you may see an increase in clients presenting with conditions attributed to exposing their skin to increased heat, humidity and UV exposure.

Thanks to overseas travel, even usually healthy skin can experience flare ups of irritation, pigmentation and dryness. Educating your clients ahead of their travels presents an opportunity to prevent excessive damage and ensure the skin’s barrier returns to function healthily.

“As clients prepare for summer travel, it’s essential to understand how environmental changes, especially flying, heat, humidity and prolonged sun exposure, can significantly impact the skin,” says Dr Simon Ourian, cosmetic dermatology doctor and co-founder of Simon Ourian MD.

Dr Christine Hall, GP, Emergency Medicine Doctor and Aesthetic Physician, agrees. “These factors can disrupt the skin barrier, trigger sensitivity and worsen concerns like pigmentation, acne or rosacea. Even clients with typically balanced skin may experience flare-ups,” she says.

Pre travel skin prep

“Preparing the skin with the right hydration, barrier support and sun protection is key to keeping it healthy throughout the journey,” advises Dr Hall. “Cutting out actives that can sensitise the skin a week or so before sun exposure can help, things like acids and retinoids, but you don’t really need to do this unless they make your skin sensitive. Just make sure you are extra vigilant with your SPF.”

However, Clare O‘Hanlon, Business Development Director of Boost Beauty Solutions, suggests clients should avoid treatments that can enhance the skin’s sensitivity ahead of travel.

“I would always recommend to avoid invasive treatments and products before exposing [skin] to [UV radiation, air conditioning and humidity], particularly chemical peels, microneedling and even waxing as the skin can become more sensitive to UV rays and increasing the risk of sunburn,” states Clare. “Opting for protective skin treatment using antioxidants would be more appropriate as the vitamins will protect the skin and act against free radical damage from UV exposure, neutralising their harmful effects, preventing antioxidant stress.”

Emphasis should be placed on hydrating and soothing the skin ahead of travel. “Clients should focus on barrier protection and deep hydration. A nourishing sheet mask can prep the skin with essential moisture and antioxidants before flying,” says David Sneddon of Hive of Beauty / +maskology®.

Protecting skin in-flight

“Skin often becomes dehydrated during flights due to extremely low humidity, while sudden shifts in temperature and UV exposure increase inflammation and oxidative stress,” Dr Christine Hall explains.

Starting a holiday by applying SPF before boarding the plane is probably not in your clients travel plans, however it’s imperative to protect skin from UV radiation ahead of take-off as Clare O’Hanlon, explains: “Amazing for applying SPF on holidays but don’t wear any on the plane? This is starting off a holiday on a bad skin note; firstly [your client is] very high up in the air, the closest [they] will ever be to the sun and the UV radiation will reach the plane cabin, especially if [they] have a window seat.”

“Flying, heat, humidity and prolonged sun exposure can significantly impact the skin” - Dr Simon Ourian

In-cabin air conditioning can also be disruptive to skin health, as Dr Simon Ourian outlines: “Even with SPF, skin is vulnerable to dehydration, inflammation and pigmentation due to increased oxidative stress and disrupted barrier function. Air travel is particularly dehydrating; recycled cabin air strips moisture from the skin, often leaving it feeling tight and dull. Heat and humidity can trigger increased oil production and flushing, while UV exposure - even through clouds or windows - can accelerate premature ageing and pigmentation.”

To address this, David Sneddon urges the application of intensive moisturising, soothing and calming ingredients during flights.

“Encourage the use of hydrating face masks, under-eye patches, or serums that offer a moisture surge, especially in-flight. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, and vitamin C to fight fatigue and dryness.”

More than SPF alone

Although clients may be meticulous with SPF application when on their holiday, skin can still be vulnerable. “Even with SPF, UVA and HEV (blue light) can penetrate the skin, contributing to premature ageing, pigmentation and flareups and when [the] skin carrier is compromised this will happen even more,” says Dr Hall. “Heat and humidity can worsen redness particularly in sensitive or rosacea-prone skin whilst oily skin is more likely to suffer breakouts. That’s why hydration, calming actives and antioxidant protection are essential, not just SPF alone.”

She continues: “Recommend lightweight serums with hyaluronic acid or niacinamide to layer under SPF and prevent transepidermal water loss. For redness, ingredients like centella asiatica and azelaic acid calm

inflammation, support repair and are ideal for travel stressed or sensitive skin. To prevent and treat pigmentation, pair broadspectrum mineral SPF with antioxidants like vitamin C or tranexamic acid.”

“Post-holiday skin often shows signs of dehydration, redness and uneven tone. Sheet masks with calming, cooling ingredients like chamomile, centella asiatica and collagen help rebalance and soothe the skin,” says David Sneddon.

With the right professional guidance and products, before, during and after travel, clients can maintain skin health and avoid unnecessary damage. “Ultimately, summer skincare should focus on prevention, hydration and calming the skin,” concludes Dr Ourian.

“By using science-led formulations and staying consistent with daily rituals, clients can enjoy their travels while keeping their complexion fresh, balanced and protected.”

The Best Way

RRunning a business and trying to take a well-earned break? The juggle is real. Whether you’re a solo biz owner doing it all or managing a small team with staff off for the summer, it can feel impossible to step away without your socials going silent. But here’s the good news: with a bit of prep and the right tools, your business can stay visible and you can enjoy that cocktail in peace.

OUT OF OFFICE

still online

Alicia Humphreys shares how to keep your socials active while you’re on holiday.

Scan me!

Here’s how to make it happen:

Step 1: Batch your content like a boss

Before you switch on that out-of-office, set aside a couple of focused hours to create and plan your content in one go.

Here’s how to make batching a breeze:

• Pick four to six key posts to go out during your break (think behind-the-scenes, top tips, seasonal offers or feel-good posts).

• Use your go-to Canva templates to speed up the visuals.

• Write your captions in a Word doc or Notes app first – less faff, more flow!

Remember: You don’t need to post every day. It’s about staying visible, not burning out before your break!

Step 2: Use a scheduling tool (your new best friend)

• Once your content’s ready, pop it all into a scheduler like Meta Business Suite, Metricool, Later or Planoly – whatever works for you.

• This means your posts will go out on autopilot while you’re off enjoying a cheeky beachside G&T.

• Bonus tip: If you’ve got Stories to post too, many schedulers now let you plan reminders or auto-publish!

Step 3: Set expectations (and don’t feel guilty!)

If you’re the main person replying to DMs or comments, let your audience know you’re away and when you’ll be back. You can:

• Add an auto-reply to your Instagram or Facebook inbox.

• Pin a post or pop a quick Story up before you go.

• Let your clients know via email too – it’s all about clear comms.

Taking time off isn’t a weakness, it’s a business strength. Your energy is your most valuable resource!

Final tip: Reuse & repurpose

Now’s not the time to reinvent the wheel. Got a great post from last year that still hits? Repost it with a new caption or graphic. Client review you never got round to sharing? Now’s the moment!

Holiday mode & online presence? You can have both. Taking a break doesn’t mean your business disappears. With a little forward planning, your social media can keep doing its thing while you do… absolutely nothing (except maybe topping up your tan). Alicia Humphreys is Owner

WWith the fresh-faced, ‘no makeup’ and ‘clean girl’ aesthetic taking centre stage this season, it’s no wonder that this trend has spread into the world of lashes. Whilst lash enhancements remain as popular as ever, clients are moving towards natural-looking lashes that are easy to wear and suit all clients.

“The ‘clean girl’ aesthetic that went viral on TikTok in 2024 has evolved, so in 2025 it’s not just about bare skin and brushed-up brows, it’s about [lash] enhancement that is super subtle, and brown lash extensions embody this perfectly,” explains Emma McCarthy of lash enhancement experts Pinkfishes.

NATURAL LASH Vibes

This has led to pro brands launching and expanding their brown lash enhancements, tint colours, lash lifting products and natural lash serums, enabling salons to deliver a barely-there look that’s still immaculate.

“My clients are always asking for a brown tint to finish off their lash lift,” shares Ronni McIlduff, educator for Beautiful Brows & Lashes. “It creates the perfect everyday look that is soft and versatile, giving a sense of barely-there glam that flatters everyone.”

“Summer 2025 is all about fresh-faced beauty, “clean girl” aesthetic, and that no makeup makeup vibe. Natural looks are dominating this season’s hottest trends, and what better way to achieve this effortless style than with a subtle yet chic brown lash lift?,” says Hannah Hughes at Beautiful Brows & Lashes.

She adds:

“Brown-tinted lashes are having a major moment, and not just when it comes to extensions and strip lashes. For the ultimate natural glow-up, a coffeecoloured tint is a stunning way to define the eye and create feathery lashes that simply scream: “I just woke up like this.” It’s no wonder that chocolatey lash lifts have taken off, and it’s safe to say that we (along with the rest of the world) are obsessed!“

Emma McCarthy of Pinkfishes agrees the ‘clean girl’ aesthetic has also made its way into enhancements, adding: “Say goodbye to the jet-black lashes that have dominated the lash trends of the past decade. The summer of 2025 is all about embracing a gentler, more natural aesthetic, and leading the charge is the understated elegance of brown lash extensions.

“Subtle, versatile and effortlessly chic, brown lashes can still provide the fluffiness, the length and the lift but with a softer edge. They complement a vast majority of skin tones, blend beautifully with natural lashes and avoid the harsh contrast that black lashes can sometimes create, especially in daylight.”

Turn the page and take a look at our selection of lash products that add natural-looking lift, subtle volume and warmth to lashes for a trend that we predict will be popular this summer and beyond.

What you need:

• HONA Gel Polish in Miami and Dunes shades.

• HONA Detail Paint in Money and Mirror Gold shades.

• A dotting tool/detail brush.

Step #1.

After prepping the nails as usual, apply two coats of Miami gel polish (from Home of Nail Art’s new Miami Mani collection), curing for 60 seconds.

Step #2.

Using your dotting tool or detail brush, apply random patches of Dunes gel polish leaving space inbetween. This will create the inside colour of your leopard print. Cure for 60 seconds.

If you prefer you can use your Mirror Gold Detail Paint for this step for added shine to the design.

Step #3.

Using your dotting tool or detail brush, outline each nude spot with two or three wiggly C shape black lines to create the leopard print design. You can fill out any sparse gaps with black dots and C shapes. Cure for 60 seconds.

Step #4.

To create the flower, take your Money Detail Paint on your dotting tool/detail brush and mark five dot points. Add two spots either side of each point close together so they are nearly touching.

Step #5.

Use your detail brush to pull the colour from each dot towards a centre point of the flower. Do this same motion for all five petals, pulling the dots into a centre point.

Step #6.

Add two flicks of colour to look like a flower stem or leaf. Cure for 60 seconds.

Step #7.

Take your Mirror Gold Detail Paint and place a few dots in the centre of the flower. Cure for 60 seconds. Apply HONA SuperShine top coat and cure for 60 seconds.

Beauty Works X Molly-Mae collab returns

Beauty Works has relaunched its collaboration with influencer Molly-Mae Hague by introducing the High Altitudes Blondes collection.

Curated by Molly-Mae herself, the two exclusive new blonde shades are available in all Beauty Works extensions methods. A new soft bristle brush designed specifically for styling extensions has also been introduced.

The High Altitudes Blondes collection aims to reflect Molly-Mae’s signature aesthetic; minimalistic, polished and timeless, and will be extended with the launch of additional styling and haircare kits in September.

Andreia Professional has introduced a new accelerator oil designed to reduce hair colour processing times by up to 50%.

Color Speed Plus Oil increases the contact surface of the colour with hair strands, optimising pigment absorption and ensuring deeper, faster penetration into the cortex.

Natural antioxidants protect against fading, while essential fatty acids restore the hydrolipidic film of the hair to enhance softness, strength and shine.

As a result, a more vibrant colour can be achieved whilst grey coverage maintained.

Commenting on the launch, Joana Merencio, Andreia Professional Technical Hair Trainer, says:

“Color Speed Plus is the ultimate salon solution. You can serve more clients in less time, deliver even more beautiful results, and elevate the quality of your services - all with one simple addition to your colour routine.”

Start making strategic decisions to lead not serve your salon business, using Katie Godfrey’s expert insights.

From Treatment Room to CEO

EEvery day, salon and clinic owners across the country are hustling hard behind the chair or bed, juggling treatments, managing staff and trying to keep up with social media and bookings. What if I told you that your biggest growth opportunity starts when you step away from the treatment room?

I know this might sound terrifying; I’ve been there. For years, I was the main earner in my salon. I was fully booked, my clients only wanted me and stepping away felt impossible. However when I became a single mum to my daughter at just 10 weeks pregnant, I had no choice but to rethink everything.

Fast-forward to now, I’ve scaled from two salons to five, grown a product range, expanded my training academy and built multiple revenue streams. All because I got off the tools. Here’s how you can, too.

The beauty industry is built on passion, personal connection and incredible service, but that passion can sometimes become a trap. You love what you do, but you’re burnt out, overwhelmed and have no time to actually grow. If you find yourself saying “my clients only want me”, “I can’t afford to hire someone” or “I don’t have time for marketing or strategy”, then it’s time to start working on your business, not in it.

“If your business can’t run without you, it’s not an asset, it’s a job you can’t quit”

When is the right time to step away?

There’s no perfect time, but there are signs. If you’re fully booked, or your team is at least 80% booked, you’re in a strong position to begin stepping off the floor. You can start small, for example, take one day a week to focus purely on the business. Eventually, you’ll start to see what’s possible when you create the space to grow. And no, you don’t have to stop doing treatments altogether. Some of my salon owner clients drop down to one or two days a week, others remove themselves entirely. It’s not about abandoning your role, it’s about building something that works with your life, not against it. What happens if you break your hand? Or burn out? Or want to take a month off? If your business can’t run without you, it’s not an asset, it’s a job; a job you can’t quit.

By building a team and stepping back strategically, you create a business that can grow without you. This not only protects your income, it increases your company’s value. One day, you may want to sell, franchise or hand the business down. That’s only possible if it can operate independently of you.

Freedom isn’t just a dream, it’s a choice

Whether you want more time with your kids, to travel or to launch a second business, stepping back gives you that freedom. It also gives you clarity. You start making strategic decisions instead of emotional, reactive ones. You finally lead instead of just serve.

I’ve helped hundreds of beauty professionals step away from their business and into true ownership. The most common thing I hear? “I wish I’d done this sooner.”

You didn’t start your business to be a prisoner to it; you started it to create something meaningful, for yourself, your family and your future. It’s time to build the business you deserve. If you need support, just shout!

How to step off the salon floor

#1. Assess your bookings. Are you or your team regularly 80% booked? If so, it’s time.

#2. Hire before you’re desperate. Don’t wait for burnout to start building your team.

#3. Plan your handover. With the right client transition strategy, clients will happily stay loyal.

#4. Use freed-up time wisely. Replace treatment hours with marketing, business development, systems and strategy.

#5. Know your numbers. Team members generate profit, even after wages, if priced correctly.

How to support clients with

AAs a hairdresser, your role often extends beyond cutting and styling hair, you become a trusted confidant, an observer of subtle changes and a source of comfort for your clients. When it comes to noticing signs of hair loss, your awareness and approach can make a significant difference in a client’s emotional well-being and journey to professional support.

Amy Johnson advises how you should navigate sensitive conversations around alopecia.

“Avoid discussing hair loss in front of others or in a way that could cause embarrassment.”

Understanding alopecia

Alopecia is an umbrella term for hair loss, which can range from minor thinning to complete baldness.

Common types include:

• Alopecia areata – patchy hair loss, often sudden and unpredictable.

• Androgenetic alopecia – also known as male or female pattern baldness.

• Telogen effluvium – diffuse shedding typically triggered by stress or illness.

• Traction alopecia – hair loss from repeated tension or styling.

Understanding these types allows you to better recognise signs and speak with informed compassion.

Approaching the conversation

Observe carefully: Notice patterns in hair thinning, bald patches, or changes in scalp condition during your routine services. Document these observations, if necessary, especially with long-term clients.

Create a safe, private space: Choose a quiet moment or private area to speak. Avoid discussing hair loss in front of others or in a way that could cause embarrassment.

Use empathetic language:

Try saying: “I’ve noticed some changes in your hair recently, have you noticed the same?” or “I’m not sure if you’re already aware but I have noticed a small bald patch at the back of your scalp. If you are concerned, you might wish to speak to your GP.”

Don’t assume or diagnose: Never claim to know the cause of hair loss. Avoid statements like “you have alopecia” or “this is definitely stress-related.” You’re not a medical professional, stick to observations and support. Try not to minimise their experience: Avoid comments such as “it’s just hair” or “it’s not that bad.” Hair is often tied to feelings of identity and self-confidence. Hair loss can have a big emotional impact

Signposting

clients to help and advice

If a client opens up about hair loss, gently suggest they seek advice from professionals who can provide a diagnosis and treatment plan. Offer the following guidance:

Medical professionals

• A GP is the first port of call, and may refer them to a dermatologist for specialist advice.

• A trichologist specialises in hair and scalp health and can provide non-medical assessments and advice. If a client is wanting to go down this route, suggest that they see one registered with The Institute of Trichologists (trichologists.org.uk).

Charity support

Alopecia UK provides support, community and education to those affected by alopecia. The charity’s website (alopecia.org.uk) contains information and advice pages, including tips on living well with alopecia and how to advocate for yourself within the NHS. Alopecia UK provides opportunities for people affected by alopecia to connect, share practical advice and feel less isolated.

Practical hairdressing help

Style solutions: Offer hairstyles or cuts that make thinning hair, or a bald patch, less noticeable.

Wig and hairpiece guidance: Help your clients with choosing and styling wigs. If this isn’t your own area of expertise, consider collaborating with other local partners.

Scalp care advice: Recommend gentle, non-irritating shampoos or scalp treatments—but be clear these are not cures and do not replace getting advice on possible medical treatment.

Amy Johnson is Alopecia UK’s Communications Manager. Following a discovery of two small bald patches in 2007, she was diagnosed with alopecia areata, leading to the loss of all her hair, including brows and lashes with spontaneous regrowth. www.alopecia.org.uk

Hairdressers are uniquely positioned to support clients experiencing alopecia, not by offering medical advice, but by providing empathy, and helpful signposting. With sensitivity and the right resources, you can help someone take the first, and often hardest, step towards understanding and managing their hair loss.

Alopecia UK is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. This September, for Alopecia Awareness Month, you could consider doing a fundraiser for the charity within your salon. Not only would this help to support a small charity in need of vital funding to continue its work, but it will reinforce what many of your clients already know: that your salon chair is a safe, supportive place to be.

CONVERSATIONS around hair loss

AAugust is National Hair Loss Awareness Month and with Alopecia Awareness Month observed in September, it’s a great time to open up conversations with your clients about hair loss. This can be a highly sensitive subject for male and female clients. For some, it can be a temporary concern, such as post-partum, although for others shedding and thinning can be the start of a longer term condition.

Whilst as a hair or beauty professional you aren’t qualified to diagnose medical hair loss, if you notice a clients’ hair thinning or they

raise concerns with you, they will appreciate you having details of trichologists and professionals who could help along with scalp and hair preparations which may assist. Amy Johnson of Alopecia UK shares her thoughts on how to navigate sensitive conversations around alopecia in her article on page 78.

“Hair loss can affect anyone at any age, whether it is through alopecia, cancer treatments, menopause, stress, post-partum and health related illness, there are many reasons why people might be suffering hair

“Hair fall becomes a cycle that impacts both hair health and self-confidence”Martha Glenn, Biolage Professional.

loss. And it is much more common than you might think,” says Stephanie Reid of Parrucche Wig Professionals (parrucche.co.uk).

“Hair fall isn’t just physical - it’s deeply emotional. Everyday stressors, from scalp imbalances to mechanical damage, can trigger hair fall, which in turn fuels even more stress. It becomes a cycle that impacts both hair health and self-confidence,” explains Martha Glenn, Head of Brand at Biolage Professional Hair Spa (biolage.co.uk).

“Believe it or not it’s common to have a client sat in the chair suffering from this and it can be traumatic for them,” says Adele Clarke, OSMO Ambassador (osmohair.co.uk) and owner of Spectrum Hair Company (spectrumhair.co.uk).

“There can be many factors that can contribute to the causes and as hair professionals it’s important to be armed with basic knowledge to reassure and reduce the distress this can bring.”

Hormone changes

“Hormone changes can be a big factor in [hair loss],” explains Adele. “Did you know that with imbalances our body can secrete a toxin called DHT? This can be effectively cleansed away with specialist or deep cleansing shampoo which will help. More frequent washing of the hair is advisable in these circumstances and a low maintenance hairstyle, quicker to do can be more helpful at these times.

“Menopause and post pregnancy are the two most common times to look out for this cause.”

Stress factors

Adele continues: “Stress and shock can be a trigger. A person can think they are handling a trying time really well, but it can manifest itself in other ways and your follicles can pay the price. This is where our skills as a good listening therapist come into play. Private, quiet areas and a listening ear will gain you that guest loyalty for years to come when you help a person through a difficult time.

“Don’t underestimate the benefits of a good relaxing head massage to nourish the affected areas and trigger good circulation to kick start new growth. Quite often it’s not what you rub in, rather than the healing relaxing touch itself that’s doing the trick.”

Extensions, wigs and hair pieces

“When all else fails, in cases of alopecia, during chemo or just unlucky genetics, there is the realm of hair replacement systems, additions and extensions,” advises Adele.

Matthew McIlveen, Education and Product Specialist at Scruffy Hair Co. (scruffyhairco.com), has seen the wig industry transform dramatically over the years.

“We’re seeing more people than ever choose wigs as a styling option - not because they have to, but because they want to. Wigs are no longer for hiding; they’re for showing up as the version of you that you feel most confident in,” he says. “People are recognising that wigs are a tool - a way to play with their look, express themselves, and get that perfect style without the effort.”

If you’re currently unable to offer hair extensions, hair pieces or wigs, it’s worth building a relationship with a local provider so you can signpost clients or even better, upskilling to enable you to provide clients with options yourself.

“Becoming a trained practitioner in these fields or if not, striking a collaborative deal with one nearby can be a very wise move and beneficial for all concerned,” suggests Adele. “These areas have come on in ways that are astounding in recent years. They literally are so undetectable even a professional couldn’t spot the good ones till we touched them.

“A client who has been dealt with sensitively and given back their hair happiness will tell many people and that’s what we’re all here for at the end of the day isn’t it? Happy hair days without the stress.”

Biolage Professional Hair Spa has introduced Full Rescue designed to break the cycle of hair fall by addressing the two main causes: scalp and mechanical stress.

The range comprises a shampoo, conditioner, restorative mask, densifying leave-in spray and invigorating scalp serum. It targets the root cause of hair fall using steam-distilled rosemary oil and triple-purified niacinamide due to their ability to restore balance and resilience to scalp and strands.

“Hair fall isn’t just physical - it’s deeply emotional. Everyday stressors, from scalp imbalances to mechanical damage, can trigger hair fall, which in turn fuels even more stress. It becomes a cycle that impacts both hair health and self-confidence,” says Martha Glenn, Head of Brand at Biolage Professional Hair Spa. “With Full Rescue, we set out to break that cycle, not only by fortifying the hair, but by helping people feel empowered, seen and restored.”
