New City Council jumps right into work By Mayor Bill Daneluik Your new City Council is off to a running start. Right after being sworn in on October 25, we held a series of orientation sessions to get everyone up to speed. I’ve already spoken to other mayors in the region to build relationships with our neighbours, and I’m planning meetings with business leaders to show them why Beaumont is a great place to invest and do business.

We’re jumping right into discussions for the City’s budget where we’ll be setting the priorities for spending over the next year. There were a lot of great ideas during the election this Fall and we’ll work to balance the needs of our growing community with keeping taxes in line.

Economic development is and will remain a high priority in the coming term. Growing our business tax base will reduce the current heavy reliance on residential property tax. A larger business tax base will help fund future recreation, arts and culture needs to continue building our community.

As Mayor, my immediate priorities include:

I’ve been getting to know our new City Council these last few weeks and they are an impressive bunch. This is an energetic and ambitious Council with a great mix of new and experienced councillors.

• Starting conversations with our MLA Brad Rutherford, the Alberta government, and Alberta Health Services to increase ambulance services for Beaumont and establish a health care facility as soon as possible; •

Establishing a Mayor’s Advisory Committee of six to eight members of the community. This group will meet at least three times a year and provide me with feedback on how our Council is doing, what is happening in Beaumont, the needs of citizens, and other

I’m excited that we have a diverse group — in age, gender, and perspectives — and they will represent Beaumont well. I look forward to working with them in the days, weeks and months ahead as we chart our medium and long-term priorities for the next four years together. (Continued on back page)
