Cindy Reid has been published in About Town, skirt!, Salon.com and The Coastal Mariner. A graduate of Mills College in Oakland, CA, she spent most of her career working with authors in the retail book business before becoming one herself. She has a daughter who lives in the state of Washington. A native of New York’s Hudson Valley, she now makes her home on St. Helena Island.

Susan Deloach was born Susan Bessinger in Beaufort, where she still resides with her husband, Larry, and sons Hudson and Tucker. Susan has a gift for capturing the personality and unique essence of her subject whether on location or in the studio. Her portraits are as diverse as the personalities of the people she photographs some are edgy, some joyful, but all have one thing in common: the sensitive, skilled and thoughtful approach of the artist behind the camera.

Emily Burgess received a Bachelor of Science in Journalism from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. She is currently a stay-at-home mom to three boys and writes freelance. She moved to Beaufort in 2013 for her husband’s job and enjoys all the lowcountry has to offer.

John Wollwerth is a photographer raised in New York, now living in Beaufort. He specializes in wedding and commercial photography, with additional background in portrait and stock photography. His work has appeared in such publications as The Washington Post, the Minneapolis Tribune, Coastal Living and South Carolina Homes and Gardens. John is involved with the Photography Club of Beaufort and the Professional Photographer of South Carolina.

He lives with his wife and three children.

Nathan Livesay

Paul Nurnberg

Nathan Livesay is the Director of Economic Empowerment at World Orphans and Head Varsity Boys Basketball coach at Beaufort Academy. He has been a coach for the past 18 years and has written for various publications throughout the years.

Paul Nurnberg, whose studio is in Beaufort, SC, specializes in architectural and lifestyle advertising photography. He photographs a variety of subjects including people, products, food, nature and travel for ad agencies, large corporations and magazines.

Local clients include Beaufort Memorial Hospital, The Vegetable Kingdom and Swanky J Boutique.

Other clients include JCB, (UK/Savannah), Johnson Matthey, Parker’s Markets and Stertil­ Koni. Paul also teaches photography and camera classes and one on one lessons to individuals.

Carol Lauvray relocated from Ohio to Beaufort in 2011 to enjoy the pristine coastal beauty of the Lowcountry and this friendly, welcoming community. In Beaufort, Carol’s found more than a home--she’s found the ideal place to pursue her passions for history and writing. Carol has more than 20 years of experience in writing marketing communications and holds a Masters Degree in Organizational Communication from Ohio University. Her daughter Cristin and son-in-law Kevin live near Columbus, Ohio.

Greyson Johnston is the Worship Pastor at Cross Community Church and Owner of GREYside Photography. Though he was not born in Beaufort, he has lived here long enough to be Beaufortonian (though he is more of a mountain guy than a beach guy). When he isn’t working he enjoys spending time with his wife, Lauryn, and his two boys, Everett and Walker.

GO EAGLES! BEAUFORT HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC DIRECTOR LINC LYLES How long have you been an Athletic Director in Beaufort County?

I have been the Athletic Director at Beaufort High School for the last four years.

What is the most challenging aspect of your job?

It is a challenge trying to balance and manage twenty-two sports and over 500 student athletes at Beaufort High School.

Beaufort High School has a full slate of Junior Varsity and Varsity teams. The Boys Teams: Baseball, Basketball, Football, Swimming, Golf, Lacrosse, Soccer, Tennis, Track and Field, Wrestling. The Girls Teams: Basketball, Cheerleading, Cross Country, Golf, Lacrosse, Soccer, Softball, Tennis, Track and Field, Volleyball.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

There are so many. Primarily seeing the relationships you develop with students and adults at our school and community grow stronger to the point they are bonded for life. That is probably the most rewarding aspect of the job for me.

What do you want most to impart to your student athletes?

I want them to really know that your education in a rapidly changing world will always open doors for you no matter what barrier or challenge you encounter.

Participating in sports is only a plus.

What should we look for from your students and teams this year?

They have the self-motivation and high energy to be led by our coaches and compete on a daily basis at the highest level.

or Nick Field, athletic director at Beaufort Academy, a typical day starts early and ends late. Long hours are nothing new to the former Marine who not only oversees the growing athletic department at Beaufort Academy, but also works as an assistant coach for the boy’s basketball team. He also owns and operates the Beaufort Hustle, the largest club basketball team in Beaufort County.

Field arrive in Beaufort as a member of the United States Marine Corps and began coaching after an injury. After leaving the service he stayed in Beaufort and coached at Bolden Middle School, Riverview Charter School and Beaufort High School before moving to Beaufort Academy.

Field explained why he decided to leave Beaufort High for Beaufort Academy.

“After speaking with Dr. Durbin I knew I had to join the staff at Beaufort Academy. It was refreshing to find a place where every decision is student centered and is focused on what is best for the kids. I want to help kids succeed and I knew that Beaufort Academy is the best place to prepare kids not only for college, but to be leaders in every area for the rest of their lives.”

Field was equally excited about the future of Beaufort Academy athletics.

“In 2017 Beaufort Academy won the President’s Cup awarded to the most successful athletic program in each classification. Last season they followed that up with five more state championships. This season we’ve won our first ever football state championship, the girl’s tennis team won its second consecutive state championship and both of our basketball teams finished the season strong. With experienced and accomplished coaches, a great administration and a supportive parent community, Beaufort Academy will reach new heights. We have added bowling, cheerleading and softball to the department this year and look forward to continuing to make Beaufort Academy the premier educational experience in Beaufort County.”

GO DOLPHINS! BATTERY CREEK HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC DIRECTOR WAYNE ALSTON How long have you been a high school Athletic Director in Beaufort County?

I was hired last spring, so I have been at Battery Creek High School for almost a year.

What is the most challenging aspect of your job?

Social media. I think it gives students instant gratification and rewards, but in real life, no one gives you anything, you have to earn it. On social media, students see overnight success, but in real life, success comes from the grind. The student that comes in first every day and is the last to leave every day, that student will achieve success.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

One of my biggest rewards is watching students and athletes grow into well-rounded community members.

What do you want most to impart to your student athletes?

Getting students to believe in anything is the hardest thing I do. I say to our students, Put it the time and work in everything you do. I see students who don’t hear “no” and they end up achieving their goals, athletic and otherwise.

What should we look for from your students and teams this year?

We have a good coaching staff and the students are really coming together. They like each other and they don’t mind going to practice! I am excited about soccer this year! The girls’ team has a lot of potential. I think we will see big things from the girl’s track team too.

All of our teams are coming together and deserve support because every once in a while things turn into magic. We want family and fans to come and support every team. People compete harder when the community is behind them. Come see what we are doing!

WHALE BRANCH EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC DIRECTOR CARLOS CAVE How long have you been an Athletic Director at Whale Branch?

I became the Athletic Director for Whale Branch Early College High School in 2011.

What is the most challenging aspect of your job?

I provide professional guidance to our coaches so they can impart quality instruction to our students. Between the boys and girls Junior Varsity and Varsity teams, we have about eighteen coaches so there is always a lot to do.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

I just enjoy working with students, and coaching is the most rewarding work there is for me.

It is rewarding to watch the young ladies and young men over time achieve success, to see their joy when they achieve a personal best or get to a regional level. Seeing students go from struggling at the beginning of the season, and really seeing their growth, that’s what is the most rewarding thing for a coach. I have had students who have gone on to excel in their professions come by and see me, and that’s rewarding for me, to see how coaching has positively impacted their lives.

What do you want most to impart to your student athletes?

For them to become productive citizens. A sport teaches teamwork, sportsmanship and how to cooperate with others. This gives the end result of being a productive citizen. All the adversity in sports makes you more prepared, the student athletes have more real-life experience.

What should we look for from your program and school teams this year?

All of our teams are young. We have enthusiastic young men and women doing their best to follow coaches, learning to do the little things well, and doing their best this year. It will be a good year.

Year Three And Growing Strong Beaufort High School Lacrosse

acrosse is a huge sport in much of the United States and is slowly working its way across the low country. It is the newest sport offered at Beaufort High School and BHS has the good fortune of having two terrific first year head coaches fall into their lap. Alex Dorobantu and Meredith Rhinehart have long histories with lacrosse and their enthusiasm for the sport led both of them to reach out to the Beaufort High School athletic department seeking to help with their programs.

Alex Dorobantu, founder of Lowcountry Legacy Law Firm, was an assistant coach at BHS for the past two seasons before becoming the head coach this

season. Dorobantu picked up lacrosse at White Station High School in Memphis, Tennessee after realizing he would have more opportunities in lacrosse than in their powerhouse basketball program.

He continued to play in college and was a referee during law school and when he moved to Beaufort he reached out to volunteer his services as a coach to the high school.

The boy's lacrosse program is entering their third season with only 1 win in program history, but matched that total with a 13-9 win over Islands High School in the 2019 season opener. The opener mirrors Dorobantu's outlook for the season. "It

has generated so much excitement and interest in the program, we think it is a real boost to the confidence in the players in our program." Player participation has increased this year dramatically and instead of struggling to fill a varsity roster, the Eagles now have enough players for assistant coach Matthew Haigler to coach junior varsity squad of 16. "Three years ago we had 20 players, this year we have 43, " said Dorobantu. This is a huge development for the program because players in Beaufort had to travel to Charleston or Savannah to play lacrosse prior to High School. All 16 of the junior varsity players are not only new to the team, but are rookies at the sport of

lacrosse.

Dorobantu credits the growth in the program to the atmosphere and program culture he is working to build. "I tell the players I have been in their shoes, I was a first year player in a first year program so I understand what it is like to start a program from scratch." He expects improvement from his squad this year due to the growth and confidence of the returning players. "We have two experienced players on both offense and defense and we are counting on them to lead us." Senior Attackmen Ethan McKenzie and Connor Sackman are expected to lead the Eagles offensively and sophomore Ben Straut and junior Logan Statler are being counted on as the core of an improved defense. Dorobantu and the Eagles have their eyes set on improving to a .500 record and making the state playoffs for the first time this season.

On the women's side, the United State Marine Corps brought a new coach to the lowcountry. Meredith Rhinehart arrived in

Beaufort in July with her husband, a marine aviator, and set about looking for a place to continue her coaching career. Rhinehart played middle school and high school lacrosse in Annandale, Virginia before playing in college at William and Mary. She had coached at every stop of her travels courtesy of the Marine Corps. She was instrumental in starting a lacrosse program at Northside High School in Jacksonville, North Carolina before serving as head coach at Scripps Ranch High School in San Diego, California from 2015-2018. There she led her team to the 2016 CIF Division 1 championship and saw players go on to collegiate careers at schools from Arizona State to Princeton. In addition to her scholastic coaching experience, Rhinehart also coached high level club lacrosse for the Pacific Falcons and was a part of the selection committee and coaching staff for the 2017 Under Armour All-American Tournament in Baltimore, Maryland.

Rhinehart was thrilled to find out that Beaufort High School had a coaching opening and contacted the school and was shortly thereafter named head coach.

She was hired in October and along with assistant coach Jim Smith the Eagles will field a squad of 19 girls - 13 of whom have never played lacrosse before. Rhinehart is excited about their energy, enthusiasm and willingness to learn. "I'm throwing so much at them with new concepts and trying to build a new culture in the program. They are doing their best to rise to the challenge while being hardworking and positive. I want them to learn to love the game and how to play it fully and play it well. I want to teach them to be good teammates, respectful competitors and to develop into a supportive, cohesive team."

Rhinehart mentioned several players who have stood out so far in practice. Nicole Marsh, the senior goalkeeper and captain has been a phenomenal leader and coach on the field for a young defense. Senior Quyntessa Tyson and junior Lindsey Breaux are also midfielders and team captains who have been positive forces and willingly

embraced the younger girls along with position changes. Rhinehart also mentioned the play of sophomore Amyah Todd, an athletic sophomore has picked up the game quickly. She also had high praise for assistant coach Jim Smith who she said has gone out of his way to make her transition smooth and makes a great effort to grow the game of lacrosse in Beaufort.

Rhinehart clearly loves lacrosse, but she also is excited about the opportunity to mentor high school girls. "I love to share the game with young athletes. It is the fastest sport on two feet. It takes incredible amounts of skill, athleticism and teamwork and it is exciting for both players and fans. I love that I can teach them about the game, but also about life. I enjoy helping them figure out who they are and what they stand for. I believe that healthy competition and an encouraging coach can make a huge difference in the life choices they make. If we teach character and teamwork first, I think the wins will follow."

Beaufort Academy Boys and Girls Soccer Season Outlook

ill Dalton has amassed so many wins as the boy's soccer coach at Beaufort Academy that he lost track of them somewhere along the way. The Eagles have won five consecutive state championship and are again the topranked team in this year's pre-season poll. Dalton, who is in his 2nd stint as the coach at BA, has more than 150 career wins, numerous region and statewide coach of the year awards, and has guided the Eagles to 8 state championships. It hasn't always been like this though. Dalton took over in 2009 after a nine year hiatus. The team was coming off of a 0-16 season. In less than a decade, Dalton has rebuilt the program to the point that no one on the team has ever done anything other than end the season as a state champion.

Leading the returners is senior goalkeeper David Matthai who was named to the all-state team and was honored as region player of the year. "David is a special talent. He's trained at a high level to be a goalkeeper for years and that gives the whole team confidence because we know the opponent isn't going to get any soft goals." The Eagles also return a quartet of juniors who earned all-state or all-region honors last season. Center midfielder Thomas Holladay and forward Ben Trask who scored twice to set the stage for Beaufort Academy's thrilling 3-2 comeback win in last year's state title game were named to the all-state team. Midfielder Dawson Coleman and sweeper William Tumlin anchor the defense in front of Matthai and were both

With 26 state championships since 1973, the Beaufort Academy boys soccer program has won more state championships than any program in SCISA history. That means Dalton can count on a high level of buy-in from both current and former players. "We have a high expectation of success, our guys put tremendous pressure on themselves to live up to the standards that come with putting on a Beaufort Academy soccer jersey." Winning five consecutive championships creates pressure to not break the streak, but Dalton says that for him he is more concerned about the pressure on

his players, not on him. "The pressure on me is mitigated by my tremendous confidence in them. They are extremely talented and resilient, we were down two goals with 20 minutes left in last year's championship game and they came back to win. In 2017, we started the season 0-5, but they rallied to win the state championship again. This year we return an experienced and talented team."

On the girl's side, Beaufort Academy will return an experienced team, but will feature a new head coach. The Eagles went 5-11 last season and lost in the first round of the SCISA Class 1A playoffs.

The new head coach named is Bruce Marroquin and he will be

assisted by Taylor Dunphy and former state championship winning head coach David Byrne.

BA athletic director Nick Field has this to say about the coaching staff, "Bruce is going to bring great energy and expertise to the position and the three of them make up a very strong staff. I am looking forward to seeing the program flourish."

Marroquin is excited about working with his team. "Our team is going to be a fast, tough, smart team. We want them to have fun while competing at a high level. Our coaches and players will be held to a certain standard to provide the opportunity to improve their skill level, encourage their growth and create positive relationships within the program in order to create a winning culture." He also mentioned that he expects his players will represent Beaufort Academy well off the field, performing at a high level in the classroom and exhibiting character, respect and a strong work ethic.

The Eagles expect to return a seasoned and veteran defense led

Cynthia’s newest cookbook, Sunday Suppers extols the virtues of the Sunday supper. She

Lisa has won awards for her artistic and written works and finds pure joy in connecting with the natural world. Her author-illustrated folktales Little Orange Honey Hood and Three Wild Pigs were released through USC Press’s Young Palmetto Books in 2018.

Maura Connelly is the communications and events coordinator for the Pat Conroy Literary Center. She holds a B.A. in English from Skidmore College and has also studied at UCD in Dublin and SCAD in Savannah.

Lady Dolphins Softball

018 was an outstanding championship season for the Battery Creek Varsity Softball team, the Lady Dolphins, coached by Coach Christian Carr.

The Lady Dolphins had a stellar season (25-8), going on to win their region title and advancing to the Lower State championship game for the first time in the school’s history.

The Lady Dolphins clinched their region championship with a 15-0 win over Bluffton High School, making them the 2018 Class AAA District Champions. Following that victory, the team claimed the Class 3A District 8 title with a resounding 11-0 win over Swansea.

They advanced to the double-elimination round of the Class AAA Lower State Championship, but their winning season ended with a 3-2 loss to 2017’s Class AAA state championship team from Hanahan High School.

Athletic Director Wayne Alston says, “Coming in after last year’s winning year, the team is looking really good this season.

We’ve got six returning as starters and five or six seniors on the team.” As for last year’s state game, he says” I attended their championship game, and there was a lot of pride because there was a lot to be proud

One outstanding result of their winning season was that three members of the softball team have signed letters of intent to continue their careers in college. Star pitcher Alexis Ortiz was named to the South Carolina Coaches Association of Women’s Sports Class 3A All-State Team, has signed with Coker. Outfielder McKenzie Young is going to the University of South Carolina,

Aiken. Infielder Emily Crosby will be attending Spartanburg Methodist. Alston says, “It is huge that our players have signed for college. I couldn’t be more proud of these young women. I am also proud of our program because we have prepared them to play at the college level.”

Looking at the 2019 season Alston says, “They are working really hard, and they have a really hard schedule. They will have to face really tough opponents early in the season, but we are looking making another run at the Class 3A state championship. Due to their level of play, we have really high expectations for the team this season.”

rack & Field" includes many sporting events and according to the National Federation of State High School Associations, it is the fastest growing high school sport.

Results from the 2015-16 annual High School Athletics Participation Survey conducted by the NFSHSA, show track and field participation for both girls and boys increased at the largest rate among high school sports. It is the most popular high school sport for girls and second for boys behind football.

Whale Branch Early College HS Whale Branch Early College High School track and field Coach Brad Taracuk is looking forward to an exciting year for the school's boys and girls track and field teams. He says, "This year is a whole new thing because we are in a new region which means we have different teams to compete against."

The South Carolina High School League conducts school realignment every two years. The athletic program at Whale Branch Early College High School is now classified as a Class AA Region 5. The Region 5 schools are Allendale-Fairfax, BambergEhrhardt, Barnwell, Whale Branch and Woodland.

Coach Taracuk says, "We have a lot of girls returning to the Lady Warriors team so we are starting off strong this year. The

girls are strong in sprints, they are good in hurdles and in the long jump."

As for the boy's team, he says "We are in a big rebuilding year. We are strong in hurdles, long jump and in the 110 meter and the 400 meter."

The season is getting underway and the teams' first competitive meet is against hometown rival Beaufort High School on March 6. Coach Taracuk says, "It's an exciting year and we have strong teams so come on out and support the school!"

Track and field is the overall name for various events which running, jumping, and throwing. There are many running events which are grouped under short distance (sprints), middle distance and long distance.

The jumping events include long jump, triple jump, high jump and pole vault, while the most common throwing events are shot put, javelin, discus and hammer. The track events are the running events that race on the track while the field events take place in the open

Hurdles A hurdles race is one in which obstacles are placed at intervals along the track that the runners must jump over on their way the finish line. Typical hurdle races are the 100m and 400m for women and 110m and 400m for men.

Relays Relay races are where teams of runners compete against each other. There are typically 4 runners and 4 legs to the race.

Common relay races are the 4x100m and the 4x400m.

Jumping Events In the high jump event, the athlete gets a running start and must jump over a bar without knocking it over. The long jump is an event in which competitors jump as far as possible along the ground in one leap. The triple jump is similar to the long jump, but there are three combined jumps that go into the total length. These are called the hop, the step, and the jump.

he Roots of Civil Rights Beaufort is where 10,000 slaves were freed when Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation was first read on January 1, 1863 at Camp Saxton, while the Civil War continued to rage. It is where the Reconstruction Era was born as these newly freed men, women and children embraced their civil rights for the first time. And it’s where, a century later, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. met at Penn Center with other organizers to plan a strategy for the civil rights movement. Beaufort is where

African Americans’ quest to attain equal rights began—a story that is still unfolding throughout our nation.

During the 1960s, Mississippi was at the center of the civil rights story and struggle in the Jim Crow South. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was in Congress that summer, as civil rights activists in Mississippi were planning voter registration drives. In June 1964, film crews arrived in Meridian and Philadelphia, Mississippi to cover the search for three civil rights workers—Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman, two white Jewish

men from New York, and James Chaney, a black man from Meridian, MS—who had disappeared together on June 21, after Neshoba County, MS Deputy Sheriff Cecil Price had arrested the activists.

At the Right Place, At the Right Time: Jim Lucas and His Camera During 1964’s Freedom Summer, Jim Lucas, a student at Millsaps College in Jackson, MS and an aspiring photojournalist, was at the right place at the right time to record history with his camera.

On summer break from college, Lucas was hired as a runner to do errands by the CBS film crews that came to Mississippi to cover the search for the three missing civil rights activists. While working for the CBS crews, Lucas documented the events as they happened with his still camera. Following a massive manhunt for the three activists ordered by the federal government, their bodies were found beneath a rural dam 44 days after they had disappeared. Jim Lucas was there to capture the dramatic scene in photographs as the bodies arrived at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson on August 4 to undergo autopsies.

Jim Lucas’ powerful images chronicling historic civil rights events that took place in Mississippi from 1964 – 1968, including local marches, pickets, planning meetings and bombings, are featured in a photographic exhibition, A Past That Won’t Rest: Images of the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi. The exhibition, presented by Beaufort resident Jane Hearn, will be on display at the University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) Center for the Arts Gallery from February 26 through March 17, 2019.

Ms. Hearn was Jim Lucas’ wife at the time of his death in a car accident in 1980.

Documenting Civil Rights History Three years after Lucas’ death, Jane Hearn met her current husband, Terry Stone, in Jackson, MS. While traveling, the couple came across Bull Point and visited Beaufort.

“Just like everyone else, we fell in love with Beaufort,” she said. They moved to Beaufort in 2007. During the process of moving from Mississippi, Jane said she was going through a storage cabinet containing her late husband’s collection of photographic negatives, contact sheets, prints and slides and she was conflicted about what to do with them. “I asked myself, ‘do I leave all of this with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, or should I do something with it?’”

She continued, “It became obvious to me that I needed to organize the collection into a presentation that could be seen by a larger audience. I thought it important that Jim’s work, as well as his contribution as a civil rights era photographer, be included in the photographic history of the Movement. Not only did Jim have the wisdom to understand that he was in an historic moment in Mississippi, but he had a gift for telling a visual story, an instinctive eye for framing his shots, and a keen human sensibility as a photojournalist. A book titled, A Past That Won’t Rest: Images of

the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi, evolved from the website of Jim’s photos that I created. I then developed and licensed the exhibit of the same name. The book includes 108 of Jim’s black and white photographs documenting civil rights events in Mississippi from 1964 – 1968. The exhibit features 50 images from the book.” \

Jane says that she was able to preserve and archive her late husband’s photographs with the assistance of Red Morgan, a professional photojournalist. “Jim kept such good records and documentation about the photos he took. When Red saw Jim’s photos, he was rather impressed by Jim’s craftsmanship and technical ability as a photographer. Red and I were working with Jim’s vintage negatives, which required restoration. Red did an amazing job of restoring them; we worked together on the editing. We began the project in 2012 and we’re still working on it—there are over 5,000 images in the civil rights part of Jim’s photographic collection,” she explained.

The book A Past That Won’t Rest, published by the University Press of Mississippi, is organized into five chapters, each representing iconic events of the civil rights movement in Mississippi: 1) the search for the three missing civil rights workers in Neshoba County during Freedom Summer in 1964; 2) the Meredith March Against Fear in 1966; 3) the murder of Wharlest Jackson by the Ku Klux Klan in Natchez in 1967; 4) the US Senate Hearings on Poverty and Senator Robert F. Kennedy’s visit to the Mississippi Delta in 1967; and 5) a chapter featuring dramatic photos documenting the Ku Klux Klan’s bombings of a synagogue and the homes of a rabbi and a Jewish family, along with civil rights boycotts, marches and meetings held in Jackson, MS from 1966 - 1968. The book includes essays written by seven experts, framing the history and context of the civil rights era. It is available for purchase at Nevermore Books, 702 Craven Street, or through the University Press of Mississippi.

Ms. Hearn curated the traveling photographic exhibition A Past That Won’t Rest, which premiered at the 50th anniversary of Freedom Summer held by the Veterans of the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi at Tougaloo College. Afterward, the exhibition traveled to the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, TN and to the Brown v. Board of Education Historic Site in Topeka, KS, before coming to the USCB

A Story Still Unfolding Throughout Our Nation When Jane Hearn was asked to share her favorite photos taken by her late husband Jim Lucas depicting the civil rights struggle in Mississippi, she explained, “The photo of a civil rights march on the cover of the book A Past That Won’t Rest is one of my favorites.

That could be any march—marches and protests were universal to the civil rights movement in the 1960s. They were about

people gathering the courage, even in the face of danger, to overcome oppressive Jim Crow laws for the first time. Another of my favorites is the photo of Robert Kennedy walking away from a sharecropper’s house and the sense you get of how overwhelmed he was with the poverty he had just seen.

Jim’s photos are 50 years old now, but the topics of educational and economic oppression, voter suppression, racism and poverty are still issues that need to be solved.”

Healthy Tips: Navigating the Grocery Store

I

f you've started a new fitness routine or are making lifestyle changes, your familiar local grocery store can suddenly seem intimidating. You may think you need to buy "all new foods," completely overhauling your current eating plan.

Kimberly Edwards, a registered dietitian with Beaufort Memorial LifeFit Wellness Services, warns that fitting all new foods into your day-to-day routine can be overwhelming, and you may end up throwing away items that spoil before you can use them.

But help is here! Follow her tips to navigate the grocery store like a pro.

Plan ahead Always shop with a grocery list and have a plan for each food listed. Planning meals for the week can be helpful.

It helps to know the layout of your grocery store, which aisles contain the healthy necessities and which ones you might want to avoid.

Never go shopping when you're hungry.

Your blood sugar is probably running low and your decision-making skills are not at their best, causing you to add unhealthy items to your cart. Keep chips, cookies and other "trigger foods" out of the cart if you

think portion control will be a problem.

Start in produce, shop the perimeter The perimeter of the store is usually where fruits, vegetables, healthy proteins and dairy are found. Start your shopping in the produce section and continue around the perimeter of the store before heading down the interior aisles.

Most of your foods should come from the produce section. For breakfast, fruits can be added to whole-grain cereals or smoothies and sautĂŠed vegetables to eggs. For lunch and dinner, think salads and roasted

vegetables. Stock up on raw fruits and vegetables (like carrots, grape tomatoes, broccoli) for snacks.

Produce in season will not only make for more affordable choices but will also maximize the variety of fruits and vegetables you eat over the course of the year.

Meat and fish Focus on lean cuts of meats and fish, and work toward replacing meat with fish at some meals. Lean cuts include beef and pork labeled "loin," "tenderloin" and "round." Ground beef should be at least 97 percent lean.

When selecting chicken and turkey, look for skinless and for leaner parts like the breast. If buying ground poultry as an alternative to ground beef, make sure it's labeled "ground turkey or chicken breast" and not just "ground turkey" or "ground chicken." Opt for fish like salmon, tuna and whitefish (and canned fish should be packed in water, not oil).

Milk/Dairy/Cheese Select lower-fat dairy options, like skim or 1 percent milk. If choosing milk alternatives such as almond or soy, make sure no sugars are added. With little saturated fat, eggs are a great low-calorie protein choice.

Egg substitutes and egg whites are good if you're looking to reduce your cholesterol consumption.

For protein snacks, consider lower-fat and packaged-by-portion cheeses. And it's OK to enjoy the full-fat cheeses occasionally

but keep portions small.

Most yogurts in the grocery store are loaded with sugars, so try to keep the sugar content to fewer than 10 grams. Better yet, choose plain low-fat Greek yogurt and add your own unsweetened fruits.

Breads/Grains Pick whole-grain breads and pastas (with the first ingredient listed as "whole wheat" or "whole grain"). All-Bran, 100% bran and shredded wheat cereals are good choices (with at least 5 grams of fiber and no sugars added). Choose rolled oats instead of the instant variety with added flavors and sugars.

Interior Aisles When you do enter the interior aisles, stock up on healthful essentials such olive oil, all-natural nut butters, nuts (no salt added), popcorn (plain), canned (no salt added) and dried beans, and quinoa, wild rice, barley, and other bulk grains.

NEW BEAUFORT MEMORIAL KEYSERLING CANCER CENTER OPENS

Partnership with Alliance Oncology and MUSC Expands Cancer Services in the County

B

eaufort Memorial Hospital (BMH)—in partnership with Alliance Oncology, a division of Alliance HealthCare Services, and the Medical University of South Carolina Health System (MUSC Health)—recently opened its new Keyserling Cancer Center on the hospital’s main campus, bringing all of the hospital’s cancer services under one roof.

Relocated from Port Royal, the new cancer center will make it more convenient for patients to navigate the complex journey from cancer diagnosis to treatment. In addition to medical and radiation oncology, the center will offer easy access to lab, imaging, infusion and breast health services.

“We’re excited about the many benefits the new center provides to the community,” said Beaufort Memorial President & CEO Russell Baxley. “Now that we’ve consolidated services in one location we can focus on adding access to sub-specialists, support services and more to our cancer program.”

The new joint venture expands the collaboration BMH has had with MUSC, providing expertise in sub-specialties not available in Beaufort. Initiated in 2016, the affiliation with the National Cancer Institute-designated Hollings Cancer Center at MUSC has allowed BMH patients to participate in groundbreaking clinical trials studying promising new cancer drugs and treatments.

Thanks to its new partnership with Alliance Oncology, BMH was

able to upgrade to the state-of-the-art TrueBeam® radiotherapy system, one of the most powerful and precise radiation therapy delivery systems available.

“We’re now offering the same advanced technology and protocols available at leading cancer centers,” said Board-certified Radiation Oncologist Jonathan Briggs, M.D., medical director of Radiation Oncology Services. “It makes it so much easier for patients when they can receive their treatment close to home.”

The new Beaufort Memorial Keyserling Cancer Center is located next to the hospital in the three-story Beaufort Medical Plaza at 989 Ribaut Rd. he Edward Means house, (604 Pinckney Street in the Old Point Neighborhood) was built in the mid-1850’s by Franklin Talbird, and its finery includes fancy interior woodwork, marble mantels, and an extraordinary floating spiral staircase.

York Daily Tribune wrote in December 1861, “The splendor of the houses and furniture and the beauty of the place may have been exaggerated, but the house of Colonel Edward Means would be called handsome in any town in the North.”

Hearing his comment as a back-handed compliment, southerners insisted on mocking the man by changing his quote: “The house of Colonel Edward Means would be called handsome in any town in the North, but I detest these cobwebs that hang in the trees!”

Replace outdated light fixtures. Wall sconces, recessed lighting or pendant lights are good alternatives to that single old-fashioned overhead fixture.

Make the front door inviting. Potential buyers often drive by before deciding they want to see the inside of a house, so make sure the front-door area looks nice.

Clean the carpeting. Unless it’s extremely worn, you may be able to avoid replacing carpet before you sell. Buyers often prefer to choose their own new carpet or opt for hardwood floors.

Clear away clutter. Put away personal photos, knickknacks, boxes, anything that will distract the buyer from concentrating on the house. People won’t buy a house if they can’t see the square footage, so clear it out and clean it up.

Clean the house thoroughly.

Take time to make bathrooms sparkle, wash the windows, and clean kitchen appliances. Don’t forget under the sinks!

Freshen up your rooms. A little paint can go a long way in making your home sellable: repaint much-used rooms in neutral colors to make them look clean and fresh.

Arrange furniture to showcase your space. Remove extra, unwanted furniture and arrange remaining pieces in a way that creates smooth traffic flow. Good furniture placement can help show off a room and makes a huge impact as a buyer walks through.

Do all you can to reduce odors. People never forget smells when they walk in the door. Try your best to remove odors caused by pets, smoking and cooking.

Perform any necessary repairs. Take a hard look around your home and see it from a buyer’s perspective: oil door and window hinges, fix loose handrails, etc.
