PERSONALITY PROFILE – JOSH COCKS

Josh Cocks is a man of faith who finds purpose in helping people.

By Susie Cunningham Six days a week, Josh Cocks gets up before the sun to milk his neighbours’ cows.

Many locals know him as the pastor of Beaudesert Baptist Church,

where he has served for 18 years this June.

Josh, 42, has dedicated most of his adult life to serving Beaudesert as a pastor, but he is just as connected in the broader community as he is in the church.

You don’t have to go much further than the local farming, school and social sports scene to find Josh’s reach extends well beyond the pulpit.

When 25-year-old Josh first got a tap on the shoulder to become a pastor, he said no.

He and his wife Jade - who had two kids with their third on the way were part of Beenleigh Baptist Church, and Beaudesert needed a pastor.

That ‘no’ reluctantly became a ‘yes’ and Beaudesert got one of the youngest pastors it

had seen.

“I think they were nervous, I was nervous, and after the first few weeks I said to Jade, ‘What have we done?’” he said.

These days, Josh knows Beaudesert is where he is supposed to be.

“I find great purpose in what I’m doing, and I’ve discovered it’s how I’m wired - I want to help people practically, emotionally and spiritually to find their purpose, place and rhythm in life.”

Both Josh’s parents were off dairies, and he grew up visiting his grandparents’ farms.

The family moved around Rosewood, Cloncurry and Gympie for his dad’s work with Telecom, and he recalls mustering cattle out west on their travels.

Before Josh and Jade came here, he was three and a half years into his first full time job as quality assurance supervisor at the Inghams processing plant at Murarrie.

He put himself through uni by working at a rose farm while studying a Bachelor of Agricultural Science specialising in plant nutrition and soil science.

These days, he applies those skills by doing bits of farm work, lawnmowing and landscaping on the side and, whenever he gets the chance, tinkering with old tractors to make them work again.

Josh’s faith, family and community keep him grounded and he counts Jade as one of the biggest influences in his life.

“We’ve loved bringing up our kids here and being part of a smaller community,” he said.

“I’m still on the primary school P and C even though our kids are long gone from primary school, I’m chair of the high school P and C now and I play mixed netball, touch football, six a side soccer and cardio tennis when it’s on.

“Working jobs for somebody else keeps my feet grounded. I know what it is to work for a boss. It allows me not to be insular just with those who are associated with church, but to have a greater connection in the wider community.

“You can only feel connected if you’re actually involved.”

Wongaburra’s $25 million redevelopment set to bring

The Next Level of Aged Care for Beaudesert

By Keer Moriarty Wongaburra Aged Care is set to undergo a $25 million redevelopment which Chairperson Noela Lee says will take Beaudesert’s first aged care facility to the next level.

“Even though we provide exceptional care to our residents, the older buildings do not meet the modern expectations of our future clients,” said Mrs Lee. “We are looking at replacing many of the facilities in a three stage redevelopment over the next two years.”

Wongaburra opened in 1970 and has had ​ many additions and makeovers, however some of the original buildings a​ re no longer in use.

Currently Wongaburra has 125 beds with 64 in the section built in 2007 and 61 in the older part.

The redevelopment will be completed over two stages to ensure minimal impact to residents.

“This will mean that none of the residents will be transferred to any other facilities,” said Mrs Lee. The redevelopment of the site will incorporate a 72-bed modern facility, individual rooms with

ensuites, with access to outdoor areas. Currently the majority of rooms in the older buildings have shared ensuites.

The redevelopment will also incorporate a new modern kitchen, laundry, café, Bob Berg community room and new carparking areas.

The project will be funded by a $10 million grant through ACAR and the remainder funded by

Wongaburra through a loan and cash reserves.

Applications for tender will be released by the end of 2022, and the Board is hoping to start the project in 2023.

It is envisaged that Stage 1 will be completed early in 2024 and the entire project completed

by December 2024.

Mrs Lee said the redevelopment will have many benefits.

“Wongaburra is one of the largest employers in Beaudesert, and once complete the project will bring additional employment and training opportunities, as well as better facilities for residents.”

“It will be so much better. The layout is beautiful, open and airy. The quality of life for residents will be a lot better.”

Kooralbyn Anzac Service Honours Animals

The Kooralbyn Valley RSL’s 10am Anzac Day Service will recognise animals that served during war times.

The service will include a reenactment of messenger pigeons being released, with pigeons supplied by local breeder Geoff Cook.

During World War One up to 100,000 carrier pigeons were used by German, French, British and American troops to carry important information.

Kooralbyn Valley RSL President, Brian McGuiness said messenger pigeons had numerous advantages in war time.

“They are easy to transport, eat little and can travel at high altitudes and quickly, and do not need batteries.”

Since 1943, 31 dogs, 32 pigeons, three horses and one cat have received the Dickin Medal for Valour, a bronze medallion bearing the words ‘For Gallantry’ and ‘We Also Serve’.

The Kooralbyn Valley RSL Sub Branch will conduct two services on Anzac Day. The Dawn Service is at 5.30am and the Morning Service and March is at 10am, both held at the Memorial Stone for Kooralbyn RSL, 79 Ogilvie Place, Kooralbyn.

Anzac Day back in full swing

By Susie Cunningham For the first time since 2019, crowds will line Brisbane Street and William Street in broad daylight to pay their respects to the Anzacs on 25 April.

The commemorations will mark the 107th anniversary of the landings at Gallipoli and also honour the service and sacrifice of defence personnel and their families since that time.

In a heartfelt display of keeping the Anzac spirit alive for future generations, younger veterans and female personnel will lead the parade through the centre of Beaudesert.

Forming up outside the Woolworths car park at 11am, current and ex-service men and women, families, groups and schools will march to the 11.30am service at the cenotaph.

Beaudesert will also qui-

etly turn out at 4.20am for its cherished dawn service.

In the cool darkness before sunrise, eerie sounds of the didgeridoo by local Mununjali man Jared Fogarty will set the scene for a time of sombre reflection and retired milkman John Fisher will recite ‘Fallen Comrades’.

At both services, The Ode and one minute’s silence will be observed, bugler Thomas Todd will play the Last Post and the catafalque party will mount its guard around the cenotaph.

A-Choired Taste will perform at both services as well as the Gunfire Breakfast, singing the anthems and other songs including Finella Loch’s ‘We Will Remember’.

Beaudesert RSL Sub-Branch President Jon Forbe-Smith said gathering as a community was key to keeping the Anzac spirit alive and praised those who had worked behind the scenes.

Mr Forbe-Smith said younger veterans and families were the future and welcomed the recent addition of five younger veterans to the Sub-Branch.

One younger veteran is Travis Holt, 46, who served for 18 years including in Afghanistan.

The former Australian Army Captain (medically retired), who now lives at Veresdale Scrub, said Anzac Day was for everyone.

“You see everyone sharing a connection - the young kids wearing their grandfather or even great-grandfather’s medals, people just wanting to show their support,” he said.

“For 364 days of the year I walk down the street and I’m just a normal person, but Anzac Day is that one day of the year where you pause. I personally lost three mates in Afghanistan, and it’s a day for me to reflect on their loss.”

Beaudesert Maternity up for National Award

By Susie Cunningham Beaudesert’s renowned maternity unit has received national recognition as a finalist in the 2022 Hesta Australian Nursing and Midwifery Awards.

The Beaudesert Hospital unit, which reopened in 2014 after a hardfought community battle, is considered the envy of rural communities across the state.

Beaudesert maternity is being recognised for improving the health and wellbeing of rural women and babies by providing high-quality maternity services to locals, including First Nations mothers in Beaudesert’s strong Mununjali community.

“The service has enhanced healthcare for local women and babies, including expanding its

Midwifery Group Practice, which provides individualised continuity of care during pregnancy, labour and birth, and in the provision of postnatal care,” Hesta’s statement read.

“Beaudesert Hospital Maternity has also increased access to culturally appropriate midwifery and healthcare to First Nations mothers… working to further enhance cultural appropriate care in the future through a Birthing in Our Community (BiOC) model of care.”

Local GP Dr Michael Rice, a staunch advocate of the local service, welcomed the news.

“I’m thrilled and not a bit surprised that Beaudesert maternity is a finalist in this award, because for decades we’ve had a culture of caring for the community,” he said.

Beaudesert Maternity hopes to use the prize money to introduce a waterbirth option and developing an onsite lactation clinic. Winners will be announced 19 May.

Beauy Shines Beaudesert area volunteers, supporters and even a local agronomist have all contributed to making the famed Kalbar Sunflower Festival a resounding success.

The sold-out festival, which went from 8-10 April, attracted more than 14,000 people to Jenny and Russell Jenner’s working farm at Kalbar.

The main attraction was about 400,000 sunflowers, painstakingly tended to by not only Jenny, Russell and their team but also known local agronomist Brendan Magee.

The event was a fundraiser for Cancer Council Queensland - a cause close to home, with Russell currently undergoing treatment for stage four cancer.

At time of print, the total amount raised had not yet been announced, but it was expected to be significant, with proceeds from the sale of sunflowers, raffle tickets and Beaudesert’s volunteer stall among efforts.

Beaudesert Cancer Council volunteers June Herbohn, Ellen Logan, Julie Ferguson and her friend Lee Tait, Kelly Laing and Judy Day put in a solid effort across the three days.

They helped with parking and flower selling and had a sell-out stall filled with sunflower themed goods crafted by local volunteers.

Beaudesert locals who were quick enough to buy tickets before they sold out also turned out in force to support the cause and have fun.

Melissa, Brenden and Maddie Frazer, Trish Ryan, Lana Bissett and her girls Taylor and Brianna Packer, Wendy and Mark Lohmann and Sue and Phil Day were among Beaudesert area locals spotted at the festival.

Phil, who attended with wife Sue and a bunch of city friends, said it was a fantastic day out.

all from Brisbane, so it was a very unique experience for them,” he said.

The anticipated event was originally set to be in March but had to be postponed so the sunflowers could be revived after heavy rainfalls and widespread flooding.

Agronomist Brendan said it was a mammoth effort for all.

“It was relieving to see it come to fruition.

When the whole event is around a very cool flower opening and a lot of people coming to see it, it’s a different kind of pressure” he said.

Ellen from the Cancer Council said the dancing antics of fellow volunteers Julie and her friend Lee as they directed parking brought an extra smile to everyone’s face.

Julie said it was a great

event to be part of.

“You couldn’t find a more beautiful setting to volunteer in, and Russell was racing around in his buggy, offering us water and being such a gentleman - they really looked after us,” she said.

In addition to raising money for the Cancer Council, Russell and Jenny donated 60 sunflowers to local café owner Shinade Harper from Teaspoons and Aprons, to help raise money for suicide prevention.

Shinade, who founded the #kindnessforkarlie movement in honour of her friend and former café owner Karlie who loved sunflowers, raised $280 for the Black Dog Institute through people buying sunflowers and making donations at the café.

A Big Move for Truck and Earth

By Keer Moriarty Truck and Earth Group have made the move to a new, bigger location at 23 Enterprise Drive, Beaudesert.

Truck and Earth Group is a family owned company started in 2012 by Daryl and Michelle Rodgers.

THAI FISH CAKES Ingredients: 300g sweet potato 2 spring onions, chopped 4 sprigs coriander, roughly chopped ½ red chilli, deseeded and chopped 425g can tuna in spring water, drained 1 egg, lightly whisked ½ lime juice Wholemeal flour, for dusting Olive oil Method Peel the sweet potato and chop into even size chunks. Place in a medium saucepan and fill with enough water to cover. Bring to the boil then reduce heat and simmer until sweet potato is soft and cooked through. Mash the sweet potato then transfer to a large bowl. Allow to cool slightly. Add spring onions, chilli, coriander, egg and lime juice and mix until combined well.

Divide mixture into 8-10 small cakes, then dust the outsides with flour. Heat a frying pan on medium to high heat and add a drizzle of oil once hot.

Fry the cakes in batches, cooking each side for 3-4 minutes, or until crisp and golden.

Federal Election to be held 21 May

By Keer Moriarty The 2022 federal election has been announced for Saturday 21 May 2022.

Residents of Beaudesert and surrounding areas are in the electorate of Wright, however your enrolment can be checked via the Australian Electoral Commission’s website www.aec.gov.au.

The Wright electorate was created by a redistribution ahead of the 2010 election and encompasses 7577 square kilometres.

It includes parts of the western Gold Coast through to rural areas between Logan City and the NSW border, the Lockyer Valley Council area, Beaudesert, Jimboomba, Boonah, Laidley, Hatton and Helidon.

The flowers are looking beautiful at Beaudesert cenotaph. Marigolds in shades of burnt orange and yellow brighten the garden beds around the war memorial like a symbol of life and optimism. Marigolds are also said to symbolise mourning - quite appropriate for the place of sombre reflection where they grow. There is something special and deeply appreciated about the way local council workers gently tend to the flowers around our war memorial, particularly in the lead-up to significant times of remembrance. Lest we forget.

High Tea, History and a Fashionable Afternoon

By Keer Moriarty Cancer Council Queensland’s Beaudesert Branch will run their annual High Tea and Fashion Parade at a new location this year.

Cancer Council member, Ellen Logan said the event, which is part of Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, was run from the Stationmaster’s House previously and is one of the Beaudesert Branch’s major fundraisers for the year.

The afternoon features a scrumptious High Tea and fashion parade with clothing by Beaudesert ladies fashion boutique, Kalico Country.

Clothing to suit all

ages and shapes will be on show, with local models displaying the range of fashions during the afternoon.

This year’s location is the historic Bromelton House homestead at Gleneagle.

Bromelton House is a working Pecan farm and Hayes Convertor cattle stud. This stunning 500 acre property has been owned by the Murray family since 2013.

Bromelton House was the main residence owned by Hugh Henry Robertson Aikman who held the first squatting licence for the property in 1842.

The homestead, which has undergone many ad-

ditions and alterations over time, was built of red cedar from the banks of the Logan River.

The house was built above a huge calabash shaped lagoon and the garden is dominated by a Castanospermum australeor Black Bean tree, which is still there 150 years later.

Tickets are $30 per person which includes a glass of non-alcoholic punch on arrival and are available from Kalico Country, on the corner of Brisbane and William Streets, Beaudesert.

Talking to staff in our Arts department reinforces to me that Beaudesert SHS is the premier local school for developing students’ creative skills. Offering Dance, Drama, Film & TV, Design and Visual Art, as well as featuring 6 of our 11 Signature Programs, there are so many opportunities here for young people to grow their talents.

This term, our Dance Eisteddfod program Junior and Senior teams are choreographing their dances which they will take to competition. Our Stage Production program students will be presenting a pantomime later in the year; this term they will work together to choose the piece.

You may have seen the Best of Beaudesert State High video on our Facebook page, made by our Film Production program students. They will continue to update the community throughout the year with these videos. Our Art and Design program is linking up with our Automotive Excellence program by designing wraps for the Clubman and Le Mans cars.

Our Songbirds contemporary music collective is playing this week at our school ANZAC ceremony. This term will also see the Arts Department host a panel of ex-students who are now working in creative industries.

So far, they have booked a cinematographer who is currently shooting a Disney movie in Rio De Janeiro, another who is both a lecturer at UQ and a film producer, and a stunt driver.

Lastly, a shop-front exhibition of student work is being organised for display in Beaudesert. We will be very proud to see some of the excellent work produced by our students available for the community to enjoy.

These opportunities are priceless: creativity is consistently listed as one of the most highly valued skills for 21st Century workplaces.

Heather is Loving Life at 90

By Susie Cunningham You will never meet anyone who loves life quite as much as Heather Joiner does.

Heather, who will turn 90 on 30 April, has a spring in her step, a twinkle in her eye and a lifetime of stories to tell.

She was born in Queen Victoria Hospital in 1932, the eldest of three kids.

Heather comes from tough stock. She recalls her dad returning from World War II with malaria before recovering in hospital and thriving as the owner of several shoe shops.

When she was 16, she helped her mum - who was blind by night with

retinitis pigmentosa make her debutante ball gown. She still has a photo of her 16-year-old self in that dress.

Heather has survived cancer twice, recovered from two strokes, and has dedicated much of her life to helping cancer patients.

The mother of three has been a valued part of the Beaudesert community since she moved here more than 30 years ago.

In the early 90s, she was integral to starting the Beaudesert Breast Cancer Support Group and became a counsellor for cancer patients and a passionate fundraiser for the cause.

She transformed 17

Albert Street - the house she bought with her late husband Keith Joiner when they first moved here - into ‘The Lodge’ and loved opening it to the public for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea every year.

She became a foundation member of the Beaudesert Community Arts and Information Centre, and taught art for several years at The Lodge.

Heather sold The Lodge years ago, but still lives in her own home in Beaudesert and loves welcoming people in particularly when it involves supporting them through cancer.

Her home is full of colour and art - includ-

ing her own art - and she takes pride in keeping it neat as a pin, putting on music and dancing around the house to get the chores done.

Heather still has her massage table set up in a light-filled nook of the house, and for 18 years provided natural therapies to cancer patients.

She said positivity was the secret to her longevity.

“I’ve never given up yet. I believe in mind, body and spirit. I’ve done

yoga for just about all my life, and exercise,” she said.

“You’ve got to believe in yourself - you can do it. Don’t speak negatively, and don’t say, ‘I can’t’.”

Heather, who celebrated her birthday early at Stationmaster House, will also celebrate at the Cancer Council High Tea and Fashion Parade with her eldest daughter, Kerrie Wise, at Bromelton House on 30 April.

A Life Spent Making the World a Better Place Margaret (Meg) Cloonan

Meg Cloonan Margaret (Meg) McCarthy was born in Inverell, and had four siblings – John, Bud, Claire and Gay. She married Peter Cloonan and moved to Beaudesert in 1959 with their daughter Jenny who was only six weeks old.

She was in a new house in a new town in a new State, leaving her family and support network behind.

To add to this, Peter was starting a new business, all of which could have been a daunting proposition but Meg

didn’t complain, she thrived in her new surroundings.

They moved into a home in Tubber Street and there she and Peter raised three more children - Kate, Dan and Tim. Their home was regularly filled with visitors - some just dropping in; some staying for months.

Meg insisted on sharing what they had with others and without prejudice.

She was also very community spirited, taking on an impressive number of roles in the local community.

She was the secretary of the Fire Brigade in Beaudesert for many years and they had a special red phone installed at the home in Tubber Street for Meg to answer calls.

She was also an inaugural member of the Beaudesert’s Arts and Information Centre and the kindergarten at the end of Birnam Street.

Meg was always helping out with the debutante balls, and was also involved with Quota, Apex Ladies, Meals on Wheels, Care and Concern, and was Secretary of the Beaudesert Centenary celebrations.

Meg was very heavily involved in the setting up of Wongaburra and stayed on as their Office Manager for many years.

Prior to that she worked as the Payroll Clerk / Secretary at Enright’s store and then had a similar role with Kent, Lyons and Sheil.

Meg had a strong Christian faith and spent time reading scriptures, attending mass, participating in discussion

groups with clergy and parishioners and reflecting on the teachings.

Meg’s son, Dan described her by saying her heart was her gift to the world.

“Physically, I think it was bigger than Phar Lap's and survived numerous attacks dating back more than 25 years,” he said.

“Even an aortic dissection would not conquer it. And spiritually, it was infinite - she left a piece of her heart with all those she met.”

Meg had a huge range of interests. She loved music, took up painting later in life and within a short space of time, was producing exceptional work.

She enjoyed gardening, especially growing flowers and taught her children the value of nurturing things as well as the importance of the wider environment.

She was a voracious reader, with crime thrillers a favourite. She, along with Peter, taught her children the value of

words, their meanings, and the value of storytelling in helping people understand the world.

She also passed on the importance of imagination and the pursuit of truth through research to her children.

Meg was also well known for her cooking, sewing (even at Star Gardens she was asked by others to mend things for them) and knitting.

Meg loved to have fun, dressing up for parties and her sense of humour often had friends and family in stitches.

Family was her dearest love, and she was very proud of her children, her in-law children, her grandchildren and the latest addition who turned one in March – her great-grandchild.

Meg Cloonan passed away peacefully on 18 March 2022, aged 90 years.

She touched many hearts and souls and in doing so, made this world a better place

FOGBOW FORMS OVER BEAUDESERT

By Susie Cunningham A mysterious white rainbow - known as a fogbow - stretching over Beaudesert on a recent autumn morning has been put down to tiny fog droplets in the atmosphere.

Early morning commuters and exercisers who looked to the sky at about 6.30am Monday, 11 April might have noticed the fogbow emerging from a foggy sunrise over the township.

The phenomenon came about as morning tem-

peratures started to cool (it was a relatively fresh 14.2 degrees when this photo was taken).

According to information from the Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology, fogbows form in much the same way as rainbows.

“You can sometimes see various optical effects in the atmosphere that aren’t rainbows but bear some resemblance to them,” the information reads.

“They form in the same way as rainbows, with the sun’s rays being

refracted and reflected by the water droplets in the fog. However, fog droplets are typically much smaller than the raindrops that form rainbows.

“This leads to smaller amounts of refraction and reflection so the colours in a fogbow are less distinct and often appear to be white.

“To see a fogbow, you need enough fog to provide a dense screen of water droplets; however, too much fog can block the source of light (the sun/moon).”

So, it is little surprise that she adores her pooch Ruby the American Staffy, who will turn two on 20 May. Lucy and her boyfriend Lachlan Liddell got Ruby when she was a 10-week-old pup, and she has been part of the family ever since.

Here’s what Lucy has to say about Ruby: “She’s such a goofball - I love the little faces she comes out with and the way she flops on her back and when she gets the zoomies,” she said. “She’s awesome to cuddle - almost better than a human - and she puts herself to bed when she’s ready. She can spin, sit and catch. She’s really fast at catching her ball.”

Ragweed (AKA Asthma Is it growing in Plant, or Hayfever Weed) your garden?

Rain and the hot summer has meant Ragweed is spreading everywhere.

Ragweed is from North America but has spread through tropical and subtropical Australia.

If you look it up it says that the animals affected by it are: humans.

The pollen contains potent allergens that can aggravate asthma and cause respiratory allergies such as hayfever.

It also causes conjunctivitis. This happens in late summer and autumn, ie now. This is why it’s referred to as the Asthma plant.

Check your garden and get rid of any ragweed.

Because of its effects on our health, and ability to take over areas and for

other reasons, it’s classified as an invasive plant with a biosecurity level R3.

However because of abnormal heat and rain, it is worse this year. Seeds are spread by floods, animals, stock feed and in moved topsoil.

Right now you can see it in Beaudesert in paddocks, and gardens and along roadside verges.

With a biosecurity level R3 it must not be given away, sold, or released into the environment.

Biosecurity Act 2014 requires everyone to take steps to remove it.

Ragweed should be removed before it flowers and while the earth is still damp, you can just pull it up.

However you must dispose of it properly.

The DAF Biosecurity Office says to put the whole weed, roots and all, in an airproof plastic bag and seal it.

Put it somewhere so the weed will decompose in the bag. Then throw the bag in the rubbish bin.

Don’t compost it or add to any greenwaste, because it can grow from

there - and you’ve just spread the weed further.

TULLAMORE FARM We love growing many different types of fruit trees and vines and having various types of fruit when in season.

Fruit that brings back warm memories, is without doubt the best.

Things like Mulberry, Monstera Deliciosa, Mandarins, Sugarcane and Loquats.

As a child growing up, Loquats were still quite common in backyards and my Grandma had one.

They don’t seem to be around like they were 50 plus years ago.

You rarely see the Loquat fruit in shops but it tastes fabulous and most who are familiar with it, do enjoy the taste.

From planting you are looking at between three to seven years to fruiting.

This depends on the starting tree and how ideal the conditions are. We have seven loquat trees here and they do well in the Scenic Rim. Ours started fruiting at about the four to five year mark.

The tree is quite ornamental and attractive.

They make excellent garden trees with lots of glossy foliage and a natural attractive shape. They can grow to about seven metres tall with a canopy that spreads four to six metres.

We prune ours to maintain a nice shape and keep manageable for easy fruit harvesting. The large clusters of attractive orange coloured fruit stand out against the dark green leaves.

Once established they are quite drought tolerant and may be why grandma had one.

They are not overly hungry and once established, we only fertilise with our compost once a year in November.

When they are still small we fertilise them more often. They flower in Winter and set the fruit in Spring and early Summer.

The two photographed fruited for the first time last year and with a nice wet period behind them, we are looking forward to a good crop in Spring and some serious reminiscing.

The events in Ukraine, and also in other parts of the world, highlight the fragile nature of peace and the freedom that comes with that peace.

Next week on Anzac Day we will honour the sacrifices service men and women made for our country in all conflicts.

I am enormously thankful all year around for the sacrifices of those gone before us in global conflicts that kept Australia free, and also those who fight and put their lives on the line to protect freedoms elsewhere, including in recent conflicts.

It is a solemn time, and I will join our re-

membrance at services around the Electorate, and also with the school communities on Tamborine Mountain.

Lest We Forget.

Water pipeline to Beaudesert In recent weeks, laying of pipes began on a pipeline that will connect Beaudesert to the SEQ water grid.

When complete, it will mean water from multiple sources – including Wivenhoe Dam or Hinze Dam – could be utilised in Beaudesert’s supply.

This should see less reliance on the Logan River/Maroon Dam – and potentially an opportunity to increase water security for other users (ie not town water

users) of Logan River/ Maroon Dam, like our farmers and other businesses that need a secure water supply to keep people working and to create more jobs.

However, the way water is allocated is managed in an extremely complex plan under State regulations, and it can take quite a while to change these plans.

I have been speaking with the relevant Minister about these changes and am working to get this process started.

While there’s plenty of water around now, there will be drought again in the coming years and getting these plans right is the key to keeping people in work and farmers producing.

Water=jobs!

Another mile of slashing and dimly ahead came two familiar ponies, Roufe and Blue Boy, ridden by Bernard’s wife Viola and sister Rose.

Viola, Rose and Mary Doherty had come down Stockyard Creek and Viola and Rose had left the fire where the ambulances waited on Christmas Creek at 2am for a five hour ride, mostly in the dark, to meet Bernard.

In charge of Proud’s stretcher was John Rosser whose vigilance kept the stretcher level to relieve any strain on Proud’s leg.

John was the unsung hero of a drama that stirred the district in 1931. Little James Doyle aged 19 months strayed from his home on the Albert River above Kerry.

On the second morning, fifty hours after he disappeared, little James was found by John Rosser, The toddler had travelled five

miles and crossed a rugged range.

About midmorning while carrying Proud’s stretcher Bernard stumbled badly twice; he was relieved at once. Willpower had been keeping him together but with the end of the job in sight his ‘old’ legs wanted to refuse duty.

Other groups of wet and worn men from the previous day's cutting party joined the stretcher carrying group, their faces and hands marked by lawyer vine and raspberry bush. One man who looked all in was ‘Digger’ Jack Bishop.

Bill Hayes of Hillview, himself a tiger on the football field had been a tower of strength to the party.

In the course of this story names have been mentioned because the events placed them and Bernard together as they unfolded.

There are many more whose names range alongside them, who took equal part in the hardship and the toil.

After a journey of eleven hours, Proud and Binstead were put into an Ambulance. The big job was done.

The four ‘confidential inappropriate conduct matters’ against Cr Swanborough on the Agenda for Council’s Ordinary Meeting of 12 April 2022 did not see the light of day.

An announcement made at the commencement of the meeting advising that a late change to the Agenda meant that Items 11.2, 11.3 and 11.4 were ‘withdrawn’.

The audio of the meeting is, at the time of writing, unavailable due to technical issues.

Council actually managed to engage a peer review for the highly contentious service station application on a flood-prone site at 2571 Beaudesert-Beenleigh Road, Tamborine.

However, the application was tabled for a vote on the last possible day for a decision – can’t rush these things, after all, this one was only lodged on 25 March 2019 (yes – 2019!).

Vote deferred to give the developer more time to submit information to gain an approval.

Back on 27 October 2021 (yes, a mere five and a half months ago) I made an application under the Right to Information Act 2009 to obtain details of the remuneration of our previous and current council CEOs. Who knew this information was a national secret?

My application progressed on 4 January 2022 to an external review by the Office of the Information Commissioner (since Council did not comply), and now that office has only managed to confirm that Council “had completed searches for documents relevant to my application”.

For the Love of Sports Photography

By Guy Hazlewood Wayne Ashby has had a camera in his hand since the moment he left high school and his love for sport has seen him combine his two passions for the last 20 years.

“I’ve been taking photos for as long as I can remember and once I left high school, I would head down to the Gold Coast most weekends and photograph the surfers down there,” he said.

When Wayne’s young sons were old enough to play rugby league he became ‘that dad’, the one who would take the great action photos of the boys and their teams.

“I would obviously be at my kid’s games, so naturally, I was photographing them playing rugby league,” he said.

“As my passion grew over the years, I began purchasing better camera and lenses to improve the photos I was taking”.

Eventually, Wayne started his own business, Queensland

Sports Photography, which he does just for the love of sport.

“I do basically 99% of the work for free,” he said.

“You can make money doing what I’m doing but you would need to be with a company or newspaper which I really didn’t want to do”.

Wayne took a couple of years off from his business as he found himself working too much on the weekends.

“I had a full-time job, I was trying to do everything, and I found that if I was trying to make money taking photos, I would lose the passion in it”.

Wayne has been back for a few years now and has been following the Beaudesert Kingfishers Women’s team for the last couple of years.

“I really enjoy the women’s game and to be able to help grow that part of rugby league, as well as in Beaudesert, I couldn’t be happier,” he said.

“It would have to be rugby league. It is my passion, alongside photography,” he said.

“I’m a Beauy local, my boys were coached by Keith Gee as

juniors, so I’ve also got that connection with the club. There’s nothing better than taking photos at Willis Park on a Saturday afternoon”.

The Beaudesert Kingfisher Women's team played their final grading game at Redcliffe before the NRLW Grand Final.

In a huge boost for the women’s game, all grading matches in South East Queensland Women’s Competitions were played at Moreton Daily Stadium prior to the NRLW Grand Final between Sydney Roosters and St George Dragons.

The Kingfishers went down 22-10 in their game, but coach Keith Gee said their effort was huge on the day.

“The girls were trailing 12-0 at the break and clawed back to 12-10 in the second half,” he said.

“As it was a grading game, I had a lot of the girls playing out of position, which was a chal-

lenge for the team”.

The Kingfishers ended up going down 22-10 and Keith doesn’t know where the team will end up from the grading games.

“We went through the grading games with one win and two losses with all three games giving us good platforms to concentrate on,” Keith said.

“I personally believe we will stay in the Community Southside Competition, where I believe the girls will give it a good crack”.

The opportunity to have their final grading game before the NRLW Grand Final was a great experience for the Kingfishers who could witness first-hand what the professionals could do.

“After the game, the girls warmed down and we all converged into the stadium to watch the

Dylan Biggs Fights in Thailand

By Guy Hazlewood Dylan Biggs has his fourth professional win after knocking out his opponent in the second round in Thailand.

Dylan travelled over to Thailand with his coach, Justin O’Leary, where they had a week long camp leading up to the fight.

“The camp in Thailand was really good for Dylan where he had to deal with the really warm climate and had the opportunity to have some different training methods with some great sparring partners,” Justin said.

Dylan’s opponent was Thai fighter Channarong Injampa, and Dylan was putting on the pressure straight away.

“He performed really well and was super aggressive straight away,

but was also keeping his technique in check,” Justin said.

“You could tell by the end of the first round that Dylan’s pressure was too much for Channarong and by the middle of the second round, the pace got to him and Dylan knocked him out.”

Dylan said the opportunity to fight in Thailand was huge, but he learned so much from the camp prior to the fight.

“There was a lot of serious K1 kickboxers and bare-knuckle fighters there which was awesome to be a part of, to watch them train and spar,” Dylan said.

“Our gym was filled with fighters from France, Thailand and Algeria; while we all do different sports, we all have something Jolionin common from – trying to be the best in

our sports.”

Fighting overseas has always been the goal for Dylan, but in 2022, he just wants to fight.

“It was so good to get the win and moving 4-0 in my career and I’m just looking forward to some more big fights in Australia,” he said.

“If I can’t find any in Australia, for whatever reason, we will just travel again. I just want to fight.”

Justin said that with each fight Dylan takes, the bigger the challenges become, and the more time Dylan will need to continually improve his craft.

“We really want to see Dylan go full-time with his boxing, so we are always looking for sponsors to make that happen,” he said.

Soccer Season Starts for Rangers

By Guy Hazlewood After a big preseason, the Beaudesert Rangers Soccer club commenced their season over the weekend of 9 and 10 April.

The Men’s, Women’s and Over 30’s all competed with the Over 30’s and the Men both playing at Selwyn Park in Beaudesert.

It was a mixed bag for the teams with two losses and a draw for the club.

Rangers Teams Looking to Improve The Beaudesert Rangers Men would have hoped for a better start to the season after a 2-0 loss against the Bayside Belters on Saturday after-

noon at Selywn Park.

The Rangers Men competed hard for majority of the game but couldn’t capitalise on opportunities in their opponent’s half.

Despite the loss, Rangers’ coach Keiron Walsh said that there was a lot of positives to take out of the game.

“It’s the first game of the season so we don’t need to press the panic button yet,” he said.

“We had our chances to score goals but just didn’t make the right choices in kicks which you need to in such tight games”.

Rangers Over 30’s and Women’s The Men’s team go on to play St Pauls Uniting in Round Two, where

both teams will be looking for their first win of the 2022 season.

Other games across the weekend were the Beaudesert Over 30’s who took a hard defeat against Raceview, losing 5-0 in a one-sided affair at Selywn Park.

The Beaudesert Women took on Northside Football Club and finished with a two-all draw away from home.

Both sides will look to improve in Round Two, when the Over 30’s take on Whitehill Football Club at home and the Women take on Boonah away from home.

All junior teams commence their season after the Easter break.
