Making Masks Merry It’s no secret that nobody likes to wear a mask, but if you’ve got to wear one it might as well bring you a smile.

That is the attitude of Beaudesert’s Finella Loch, who has made about 1000 facemasks since the first COVID-19 mask mandates of 2020.

As Beaudesert continues with its longest mask mandate to date, which has been going since 29 June, Finella is busier than ever in her home sewing room.

Personality Profile Tractors run in Murray Dover’s blood.

As a fourth-generation owner of Dover and Sons, he continues to live and breathe the work his greatgrandfather started in 1900.

As soon as Murray Dover was big enough to reach the steering wheel and pedals, he was driving tractors.

He was only a kid – eight or 10 years old – and now that he’s 74, not much has changed.

Murray is well known around Beaudesert as the local face of Dover and Sons, one of Queensland’s oldest farm machinery businesses.

He and his cousin Bob run the company, which also has two sites at Boonah.

Their 65 local staff are like family, and cus-

tomer service is at the core of everything they do for their clients locally, out west and across Australia.

Murray was born and raised in Boonah, the same town where his great-grandfather Samuel Dover established the Farmers’ Exchange 121 years ago.

He worked in the banking industry for 33 years, starting at Boonah NAB before taking jobs in Brisbane’s Queen Street and out west in towns like Charleville and Mitchell.

He said Dover and Sons remained successful by sticking to its roots.

“We’ve resisted getting bigger because history shows a lot of businesses who’ve gone bigger have gone down, you’ve got to outlay so much money to open more branches,” he said.

“If we went bigger, we might lose our customer service. We’re a long way from perfect but customer service is paramount.”

In December 2014 the Beaudesert branch of Dover and Sons went up in smoke, literally.

“It was devastating, losing everything, and at the time of the fire I wasn’t very coherent, but I said we’d come back bigger and better,” Murray said.

“You can turn a negative into a positive, but it was hard work and I have to acknowledge

our staff and loyal customers for how successfully we’ve grown since then.”

Murray has long been a fierce advocate for the agricultural industry.

For years, he had a big sign outside his shop urging everyone to buy branded milk in support of the dairy industry, and he still gives out stickers with the same message.

“Dollar a litre milk has just about led to the decimation of the dairy industry – we haven’t got too many dairy farmers left,” he said.

“It was a very buoyant industry, and this

should never have happened.”

There’s not much time in Murray’s life for leisure but, unsurprisingly, tinkering around with old tractors is a hobby of his.

He loves sport, passing his love of running and cycling onto his two sons and supporting local sporting clubs, and he grows avocados at his home on Tamborine Mountain.

But on any given day, you’ll most likely find Murray at Dover and Sons.

“My father retired at 88 and lived to 96, so I’ve probably got a few years in me yet,” he said.

COVID Fatigue:

Latest Lockdown Hits Hard

By Susie Cunningham Beaudesert is breathing a sigh of exhausted relief after making it through another snap lockdown to stop the spread of the highly infectious COVID-19 Delta variant.

The hard lockdown from 31 July to 8 August dealt a significant blow to the casual workforce employed by local small businesses.

Gyms, hairdressers and beauty clinics were forced to close their doors while hospitality venues and small retail outlets barely scraped through as people obeyed the stay home orders.

It also impacted community groups who had to cancel or postpone events at the last minute, families juggling working and schooling from home and people isolated from their loved ones.

Café owner Kylie Peterson, who purchased Bean To? Café just before the first lockdowns of 2020, said it had been tough.

Speaking to the Beau-

desert Bulletin during lockdown, Ms Peterson said it was hard on her staff, whose shifts had to be cancelled.

“Mum and I have been just coming in and doing five hours a day and only stocking minimal cabinet food to reduce waste because the customer base just isn’t there – my sales dropped by at least 50 or 60 per cent,” she said.

“We’ve just been hoping to make enough off coffees and toasties to cover the shop rent and electricity.

Ms Peterson said she was grateful to be eligible for the for the $5000 COVID-19 Business Support Grant, and that her staff were also entitled to a small subsidy, after muddling through without access to government support last year due to the timing of her business purchase.

ment messaging.

“I absolutely get the frustration for businesses and families with the ever-shifting goalposts of health directives from State authorities,” he said.

“If the State is going to keep on imposing very drastic restrictions, they need to make them clear and explicit, so everybody knows what the situation is.”

Federal Member for Wright Scott Buchholz said the Federal Government had committed to providing disaster payments for income support and encouraged everyone to get vaccinated.

“We need to make sure we’re protecting our community - there is a path forward - vaccination,” he said.

“We make the decision to get vaccinated to protect ourselves, our families, our friends and broader community.”

CWA Thrives Despite Challenges

By Susie Cunningham The Beaudesert Country Women’s Association branch has contributed 9700 volunteer hours in the last 12 months despite challenges associated with the pandemic.

The branch celebrated the successes of the year at its 94th AGM on 29 July.

Returned President Bev Fehlberg said the group’s focus was on helping the community.

“As each year approaches so do new challenges and hardships.

Beaudesert CWA are there for our community to help in little ways, to give comfort to those who need it, whether it be a little child getting a needle or stitches, to the elderly, the homeless or those fighting to keep our nation safe,” she said.

“For this, I thank our members for their dedication and hard work.

“This coming year sees us facing the same chal-

lenges as well as a relocation of our hall (which) will hopefully not impact too much on our functioning, and we will try to continue our support.”

The Beaudesert CWA spend their weekly gatherings diligently handcrafting countless items to help the sick and needy, young and old across the community and even abroad.

When they aren’t handcrafting items to donate, they’re baking up a storm or making jars of irresistible jams and relishes to sell at events like the Beaudesert Twilight Markets and their Cent Auction, to raise money for materials and supplies.

In the last year alone, they’ve donated 376 knitted or crocheted toys to pathologies, doctors’ surgeries, Beaudesert Hospital, Beaucare, Quota and police and child protection, 400 tiny beanies and 40 knitted octopuses for premature babies and

They’ve donated dementia mats and dolls, beanies, pillows and Christmas presents to local nursing homes, towels and personal care bags to Beaucare’s homeless shower unit and winter bags to help the homeless and child protection through the Uniting Church.

ey to help a primary school student in need purchase a uniform, books or swimming lessons, toys for the students to send to orphanages at Christmas time and sent Christmas boxes to Australia’s service personnel overseas.

The Power of Helping

By Susie Cunningham When the effects of the global pandemic started to hit home early last year Beaudesert’s Finella Loch, like many of us, felt helpless.

Her sense of purpose and belonging came in the unlikely form of making reusable cloth facemasks to help people through COVID-19.

Finella first got into it when her youngest daughter Katie, who lives in Potts Point, Sydney, was struggling to find reusable facemasks during an outbreak.

Being able to help her daughter was the beginning of getting her sparkle back.

“Last year at the beginning of the pandemic we’d just had the bushfires and I had a huge feeling of not being able to help in my own com-

munity, then when the lockdown happened, I was really struggling with it,” she said.

“When Katie asked me to make some masks for Sydney I thought, ‘I can help there’ and I pretty much haven’t got off the train since. I like to be needed and helping makes me feel like I belong.”

Sending masks to family in Hobart, Sydney, Perth, Rockhampton and Brisbane has helped Finella feel connected to her loved ones when they cannot physically be together.

Finella, who is also on Beaudesert’s Christmas Spirit Committee, is in her element as she knuckles down in her sewing room, surrounded

by Christmas yarnbombing materials.

She has not marketed her masks, but demand has surged in the latest lockdown.

“Being able to help and use a bit of creativity is really uplifting for me

and sometimes I’ll be online at 11 at night buying more colourful fabrics that people might like,” she said.

“I figure if we’ve got to wear them, we might as well wear something that makes us or someone else smile.”

Finella’s masks, which come sealed in a snap lock bag with instructions

for washing and wearing, sell for $10 each at Bean To Café in Beaudesert.

In tribute to her friend the late Tracey Day, who Finella describes as the most caring person she’s ever known, free masks are also now available for people in need via Tracey’s Pantry at Beaudesert Uniting Church from 2pm to 4pm Fridays.

Tamrookum Hall “Will Look Like New”

By Keer Moriarty Tamrookum Hall is on track to look like new for the 70th Anniversary celebrations next year, thanks to a Gambling Community Benefit Fund grant.

Tamrookum Hall President, Lani Deeran said she was very excited to hear the grant had been successful.

“This is what I’m aiming for - to get the hall done up in time for our 70th anniversary,” she said.

Ms Deeran said the $34,714 will be enough to undertake significant work on the historic building.

“At the moment the hall has cladding on it but there is beautiful weatherboard underneath. We will remove the cladding, upgrade the plastic downpipes and paint the

exterior and it will look wonderful”.

The 70th Anniversary of Tamrookum Hall is planned for the weekend of 2 and 3 April 2022.

Member for Scenic Rim, Jon Krause said the money would make a huge difference to the successful local group.

“This terrific outcome would not have occurred without many hardworking volunteers giving their time and energy to complete the grant application process.”

“It is wonderful to see that these community groups will be able to install and upgrade facilities to help them maintain their services.”

Beaudesert Bowls Club also received $18,900 to purchase a top dresser machine.

Good Times at Logan and Albert Hotel Reopening

By Susie Cunningham The iconic Logan and Albert Hotel was the place to be on 23 July, when the popular venue reopened after sitting empty for three years.

The country pub, which originally opened in the 1890s but was rebuilt in 1934 after fire destroyed the original building, attracted old regulars and plenty of fresh faces on opening night.

Well-known local musician Susanna Colley played at the opening, and other local crowd favourites Brad Currie and Kylie Moss have played there since.

In the lead-up to the reopening, the Beaudesert Bulletin put the call-out to readers on Facebook, to find out people’s memories of the Logan and Albert Hotel.

It’s nearly that time of year! There’s a buzz around town as we inch closer to the 125th anniversary Beaudesert Show, which is coming up on September 3-4.

I had to pause and admire the Beaudesert Showgrounds from the street as I paced past on a recent evening walk around town.

The Beaudesert Show Society have been working hard behind the scenes and without a doubt those familiar grounds will be looking better than ever come September, ready to welcome us all back after a year off due to ‘you know what’. I’ve heard people say they reckon the Beaudesert Show is even better than the Ekka. As much as I love the Royal Queensland Show, I’ve got to say the cosy local atmosphere we get at our own local country Beaudesert Show is second to none.

Comfort for Breast Cancer Patients

By Keer Moriarty Two Beaudesert community groups have banded together to provide comfort to breast cancer patients.

Beaudesert Zonta and Beaudesert quilters made 150 breast cushions which are designed to be worn around the shoulder.

Margaret Brennan said the cushions are designed to be worn around the shoulder for people who have had masectomies.

“The ribbons go around the shoulder and the cushion goes under the arm to support the breast when sleeping or even driving,” she said.

“They all say it makes such a difference. We send them to the hospitals and they leave them on the pillow for when they come out from surgery.”

Beaudesert Quilters President, Penny Churchyard and Joan Smith (from Beaudesert Quilters) with Pennie Hammond and Margaret Brennan from Beaudesert Zonta.

Zonta members spent hours cutting out the custion patterns which were then provided to Beaudesert Quilters to sew.

The cushions are then

sent to the PA Hospital, Mater Public and Private and Sunnybank Private Hospital for distribution.

“We do some darker colours for men, as it is

an illness that affects men as well as women.”

Ms Brennan said the cushions have been an annual project for Zonta and the Beaudesert Quil-

ters for about 10 years.

Funding for materials for the project comes from Zonta’s fundraising during the year as well as some donated materials.

JOY DRESCHER Home-schooling should have been easier this time around. Maybe.

First time around my heart bled for the mums and dads at home who had never in their wildest dreams contemplated teaching their children.

My heart also bled for the kids trying to learn from mums and dads at home. Often working from home as well.

I spent about half of my primary schooling being home-schooled.

Didn’t like it once I’d been to school and discovered other children to play with, school or class libraries, games with enough people to have two teams. People other than family to talk to! Heavenly!

I have a daughter living with me at present who, of course, is home schooling Sterling. She is a teacher and Beaudesert State Primary School sent out school packs on Wednesday for the week’s work. Much better than the schmozzle first time round. It was not just hell for those at home, teachers had it very tough as well.

The rules were worse than rubbish. So demanding I’m surprised the teachers made it out the other side still sane.

Today my grandson James and his mum rang for help with a family tree project for school.

With a big family of six children, 12 grandchildren and ten great-grand-

children, Michelle was quite at a loss. With my trusty, but not updated properly, birthday book, I was able to supply the dates and months of all the offspring. Except for one great-grandchild who missed the updating. Had to ring the grandmother for help! The children had spouses with known birthdays. Didn’t even try to update the grandchildren’s spouses!

It was a lot of work writing all the names and birthdates in the various months. His mum has one brother with one son. James was happy about all the birthdays because he said he was sure to win with so many!

Freedom in this World ‘We don’t realise what we have until we don’t have it’.

We may feel that many of our basic freedoms

have been stripped away.

That is understandable and true – even if for arguably good reasons.

But transcending these human freedoms is the provision of peace within this chaotic world and restored relationship with God. The apostle Paul writes of this great news, that ‘through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set us free from the law of sin and death’ (Romans 8:2) that ‘we may approach God with freedom and confidence’ (Ephesians 3:12).

True freedom comes by knowing God, walking in His ways, and trusting Him. It is life changing!

Ingredients 2 teaspoons olive oil 1 brown onion, finely chopped 3 garlic cloves, crushed 400g can crushed tomatoes 1/4 cup raisins or sultanas 1/2 teaspoon mixed spice or allspice 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar (optional)

Method Heat oil in a saucepan over medium heat.

Add onion and cook for 3 to 4 minutes or until soft.

Add garlic and cook for 1 minute. Pour in tomatoes, raisins or sultanas and mixed spice. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, uncovered, for 40 minutes or until chutney is thick.

Tracey’s Pantry Provides Essential Support

By Susie Cunningham Local food hamper service, Tracey’s Pantry, has kept up its role in helping feed hungry mouths through the latest lockdown.

Tracey’s Pantry, which is run by a small team of volunteers, distributed hampers to a total of 9 people during lockdown.

The service is operated out of the Beaudesert Uniting OpShop on William Street each Friday, with a new time of 1pm to 3pm.

Former minister David Hawke and his wife Susan started it as a food bank in 2020, at the peak of Covid lockdowns, and local volunteers have continued their work.

The service is called Tracey’s Pantry in honour of Tracey Day, a local community-minded woman who passed away due to cancer in 2019.

Tracey’s mother Judy Day and fellow volunteers Peter Venz, Shane Page, Matt Harrison and Doug Lavers-McBain stock up and distribute the packs.

They source staple items from Food Bank in Brisbane and they have received support via private donations, Beaudesert Rotary, Beaudesert’s two bakeries, Olley’s Orange Jimboomba, Coles Beaudesert and even the proceeds of the final Glad’s Girls concert.

“I’ve been a bit surprised we haven’t seen more demand here throughout the pandemic.

Anyone is welcome here if they’re in need – we’re not here to judge,” he said.

Mrs Day said it was something her daughter, Tracey, would be proud of.

“I donated Tracey’s old freezer and thought it’d be great to have it stocked with food for people who need it, because that was just the sort of person she was. She loved cooking and giving food to people,” she said.

TULLAMORE FARM Growing sweet potato here in the Scenic Rim should not be difficult for most.

Whilst they struggle a little in winter, we do manage to maintain our crop through the colder months. We plant out and harvest a sweet potato crop here at Tullamore Farm every two or three months. We generally have four crops at varying stages of development and we harvest a crop between five and nine months after planting. This depends on the season and how much rain and how warm it has been. They love the heat.

The hotter it is, the faster they will grow. Leave them in the ground too long though and you will end up with large woody tubers - not so tasty.

Sweet Potatoes don’t like heavy waterlogged soil, cold weather and fertilizers high in nitrogen, too much nitrogen and you end up with lots of leaves and not much sweet potato. We eat the young fresh leaves and stems. We have them in juices and often in stirfries.

There are not many plants that can provide

the same nutrition per square metre as the humble sweet potato. We grow the common orange variety and that colour comes from its high content of Beta Carotene which is an antioxidant.

Because we have been growing them here for years they pop up everywhere. Once you have them in your growing system you can grow them from either small tubers/plants or purely from cuttings. Plant a young healthy cutting straight in the soil or leave it in water until shoots start to emerge.

Water the youngsters well until they are established.

Once they are established you can largely ignore them until harvest time. We harvest the whole bed but you could have them growing permanently in one spot and just dig up what you need for a meal.

The Sweet Potato is easy to spot as they poke up through the topsoil.

When we harvest ours we leave some of the soil on them and store in the cellar, but any cool dry spot will work. They will keep this way for months.

The Show will (hopefully) Go On

By Susie Cunningham Hopes are remaining strong the Beaudesert Show will be able to proceed, as the show’s management committee continues to monitor public health advice regarding the pandemic.

At time of print, the Beaudesert Show Society management committee expected to meet the week beginning 9 August to discuss the 2021 show.

The highly anticipated show, planned for 3 - 4 September, is set to be their second try at a 125th anniversary celebration, after the 2020 event had to be cancelled due to Covid.

Speaking to the Beaudesert Bulletin on Monday, 9 August, Show Secretary Andrea McFarlane said organisers were remaining positive but

pragmatic.

“The health and safety of the Beaudesert community comes first. We are watching the situation closely and the State Member’s office is keeping us well updated,” she said.

“At this stage, we have no change of plans, we’ve received no advice that we can’t go ahead, and everything is progressing as planned. We engaged a professional to assist us with our Covid Safe plan, and we are ensuring all measures are in place.”

She said after the show suffered the impacts of floods in 2018, bushfires in 2019 and a Covid cancellation in 2020, there would be great cause for celebration if it could go ahead in 2021.

“We want to move forward with it and give the

The Beaudesert Showgirl and Ambassador judging and dinner,

which was to be held at Beaudesert Golf Club on 31 July before the snap lockdown was announced, has been postponed.

Judging will now be held on 21 August, with

a new date for the dinner yet to be announced.

Questions about Retirement Living

By Cheryl Folley “Where will I live as I get older?” is a question asked much more often today than even ten years ago, as retirement living options spring up all around Australia.

And here in the Scenic Rim, we are close to some of the fastest growing areas in Logan and Ipswich for a range of independent choices. For Beaudesert residents, that can mean an easy travel distance for families and senior family members to keep in touch.

But the choice isn’t easy, as lawyer Loretta Stellino from the (free) service run by the Caxton Legal Centre explained at a recent presentation organised by Beaudesert U3A to inform members.

She stressed the need for homework and legal/

financial advice before making any final decisions.

Loretta described a number of options including town houses and even a group takeover of a former motel, but focussed on the two most common options, a retirement village or a so-called “manufactured home park.”

She said that in simple terms, a retirement village was a lifestyle decision, not necessarily the best financial decision. While it usually had advantages in offering a community with benefits such as a heated swimming pool and lifestyle options on-site, it also involved an exit fee for anyone either wishing to move out or needing to move to an aged care facility, or in the case of an owner’s death. Negotiations could be drawn out

over many months.

One difference from a manufactured home park was that such parks offered in general an affordable option to buying a house and owners were free to sell their home at any time, with no exit fees. Owners however did not own the land on which their house stood, and they needed to pay rent for the land.

Loretta said that prospective buyers needed to read not just the brochures but also the legal disclosures and financial aspects and seek independent professional legal and financial advice.

Vaccine Demand Surges

By Susie Cunningham Beaudesert has experienced a spike in bookings for vaccines during the most recent lockdown.

Local GP Dr Michael Rice said the phones had been running hot at Beaudesert Medical Centre.

“Our reception team are working flat out taking bookings from eligible people for Covid vaccinations,” he said.

“We’ve got a good supply of the Australian made AstraZeneca vaccine, the supply of the Pfizer vaccine is coming through according to our allocation and we are booked up some weeks ahead.

“The challenge we have is the supply of the Pfizer is coming in bits and pieces, we don’t want to book too far ahead in

case it doesn’t arrive, but it has arrived as anticipated so far.

POLICE BEAT Changes at the Station Acting Senior Sergeant Jon Kirkman is replacing Senior Sergeant Ken Murray for five weeks while Senior Sergant Murray is seconded to Logan.

Kirkman, who was previously stationed at Logan Central, said he has found it heartening to see the community spirit in Beaudesert.

“People want to look after each other and their families here,” he said.

COVID Restrictions Rapidly changing COVID restrictions recently have been a cause for concern in the community.

Acting Senior Sergeant Kirkman said over the lockdown period the Beaudesert Police Sta-

tion had received plenty of telephone calls asking for advice about the restrictions.

“That’s gold,” he said, “We would rather people do that than get it wrong.”

There is a COVID hotline that the public can call for advice about restrictions 13 42 68.

He said there is a small section of the community who do not agree with the restrictions and asked that they continue to comply with the directive.

Until 22 August, the following restrictions are in place: • Mask wearing at all times (including workplaces) except when eating or drinking, or exercising with your household or one other person.

• Schools are open, with all staff and high school students wearing masks;

A Defibrillator for Rathdowney

Life saving equipment installed at Rathdowney Caravan Park thanks to Australian Government subsidy.

The Rathdowney Caravan Park now has a defibrillator available for use by visitors and locals.

This life saving equipment was purchased by the Rathdowney & District Memorial Grounds Association (RDMGA), helped by the Australian Government’s Caravan Park Defib Subsidy.

RDMGA President, Andrew Buchanan, explained, “Locals were very keen to have this equipment installed.”

“We have many elderly people living in the district and visiting town.

You don’t even need to be very old these days to experience heart problems.”

“Other groups are

also fundraising to buy defibrillators for local venues, so this is a great start.”

The new defibrillator is fully automatic and tells the operator what they need to do. It uses a keypad lock to prevent theft, but the keypad code will be known to emergency services, and available by phone call to a message service.

The Australian Heart Foundation warns, “Each year in Australia, about 25,000 people have a cardiac arrest out of hospital, but it’s estimated that as few as 5% of these people survive to leave hospital and go home”.

Federal Member for Wright, Scott Buchholz joined Rathdowney residents and members of the memorial grounds executive to unveil the new defibrillator.

George Arthur Teese soon graduated from taking cream to Laravale with two horses in the wagon to driving three and sometimes four in a double farrow disc plough.

Outside the farm George worked for neighbours droving, mustering, dipping cattle and taking cattle to and from a sale; for the latter George could receive ten shillings (10/-).

About this time he received Fifty pounds (£50/-/-) for work on the home farm.

Feeling very wealthy George opened a savings account at the Post Office.

He was a man in all things, riding to Beaudesert to have four teeth pulled and riding home was nothing unusual for him.

To get their cream across Cannon Creek when it flooded someone had to swim across with a rope and pull the cans through the water; the meat and bread came over the same way.

The farm’s draught horses could take a wagon through a metre of water. George thought they were pretty good.

If there was surplus corn the family would husk it and put it through the hand sheller and get nine or ten shillings a bag for it; sometimes husking would be

done after ‘tea’ by lantern light.

The sub-division of land from Telemon Station occurred from 1925 to 1930.

The Teese family purchased four ninety acre blocks for £8/10/- per acre.

In 1933 the Telemon homestead block made £18/-/- per acre.

George started showing draught horses, Berkshire pigs and farm produce in the late 1920s as part of a family involvement and the interest remained with him over his working life.

Cricket, tennis and lawn bowls were an important part of life for family members who found friendship and some success there.

George started as a tail-ender batsman with the Laravale cricket team and graduated to opening bat with his father, G H Teese.

It was here with two Georges opening bats that George Junior became ‘GA’ to the scorers, which stuck to him.

George and Norma Langdon played a lot of tennis together before and after marriage. Later both would join the Beaudesert Bowls Club.

Congratulations to our own ‘Beaudesert Bullet’, Riley Day, who performed incredibly well against the world’s top female runners in the Tokyo Olympics.

Residents and visitors travelling between the Scenic Rim and the Southern Downs via Head Road at Carneys Creek will need to make alternate travel arrangements for four months while a section is closed for essential guard rail repairs.

Council has received funding to replace approximately 200 metres of guard rail on a very windy and steep section of Head Road, near Brett’s Road at Carneys Creek.

The works, which are set to begin on 23 August 2021, are necessary as the aged timber posts supporting the guard rails on this section of Head Road were burnt by bush fires.

Geotechnical surveys indicated the foundation beneath the guard rail posts require stabilising, meaning the highly weathered rock slope will be excavated and rebuilt, and a section of the road cut out to allow the guard rail foundations to be suitably rebuilt. The upgrades will also include improved drainage and hazard signage.

Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said the road needed to be closed to ensure these vital repair works could be done safely.

“Our council engineers undertook a very thorough and comprehensive investigation looking at whether the road could stay open during these repairs,” he said.

“The terrain of the section of the road, the work that needs to be conducted, the timeframe of the project and costs involved meant it wasn’t a feasible option to keep it open during construction.”

“Closing the road to all traffic for these essential repairs will result in a large detour of 160 kilometres, however Council will work closely with Carneys Creek residents who use this section of road on a regular basis to mitigate the impact as much as possible.”

“We recognise that the closure will cause some inconvenience for road users, however it’s important to get this work completed to provide a safer road network for our communities and visitors.”

For those travelling from Boonah, Mt Alford or Rathdowney there will be no-through access via Head Road to Queen Mary Falls, Killarney or Warwick.

Queen Mary Falls will still be accessible via Spring Creek Road from Killarney.

Check for Fire Ant Nests this Winter

The National Fire Ant Eradication Program is reminding everyone to keep an eye out for fire ants over winter when their nests can be easier to spot.

While many species like to hibernate in colder months this is not quite the case for fire ants.

National Program General Manager Graeme Dudgeon says fire ants build their nests higher in cold weather to gather warmth - making them more obvious.

“Fire ant nests can sometimes be tough to spot because they can look like a flat patch of dirt.

A mounded nest is much easier to spot,” he said.

“While our aerial, field and odour detection dog teams are out looking for nests in areas across South East Queensland, the community plays a vital role in spotting fire ants in their own yards, parks and local neighbourhood.

“We’re asking everybody to keep their eyes open and report any suspicious ant mounds to us.

“We also suggest caution.

Fire ants have a nasty sting and disturbing the nest could see you meet them up close and personal.”

Fire ants are copper brown in colour, very small and unlike other ants can vary in size at anything from 2¬–6 mm.

Brickbat Scenic Rim Regional Council’s Planning Section needs a shake-up.

One of the two new court cases lodged recently has arisen as Council failed to make a development application (DA) decision by the negotiated extended decision date of 31 July 2021.

This gave rise to a “Deemed Refusal” to which the developer has appeal rights, now exercised.

Whilst the recommendation to refuse the DA (MCU20/050) was con-

tained in the agenda for council’s 3 August 2021 meeting, this was outside the decision period.

As Council’s meeting was not held due to COVID lockdown, the decision has still not been made at the time of writing (6 August 2021).

This DA has been highly controversial and resulted in 232 objections submissions.

This was the same site upon which Council approved a “tennis court” and consequent clearing of koala habitat on a steep slope whilst being aware that the developer was planning

to construct “disability cabins” on the same portion of land. Asleep at the wheel?

Ratepayers are paying twice – once for staff who have not carried out their roles and again by way of legal fees to defend their failure to do so.

There was also a second instance where Council requested an extension of time in which to issue an Information Request and then missed that date, resulting in the developer (one of the “Nature-Based Tourism” applications) treating the request as “informal” as it was made out of time.

This DA has attracted – at the last count – 310 submissions, overwhelmingly opposed to the development on Rural Residential A land.

Fogarty’s Off-Field Service Recognised

By Susie Cunningham Beaudesert’s own Jamal Fogarty has been recognised for his extraordinary service to the community, with the Gold Coast Titans nominating him for the Ken Stephan Medal.

The prestigious national medal, now in its 33rd year, recognises the efforts of an NRL player who goes above and beyond to make a difference in the community.

Previous winners include Jonathan Thurston, Nathan Hindmarsh and Ryan James.

This year the Titans nominated club co-captain Fogarty for his active volunteering, mentorship to young players and children and working with community groups.

Fogarty, who was born and bred in Beaudesert

and returns regularly to visit family, credits his hometown and Mununjali community with shaping who he is today.

Speaking at Beaudesert High recently, Fogarty focused on the importance of giving back.

“The reason I got into youth work was to give back, because our culture is all about giving back and sharing our life experiences,” he said.

“That’s what Aunty Donna Fogarty, Uncle Brad Currie, Sharne Iselin, everyone at Mununjali JJ Club did because they just wanted to see us smile. I started that job in youth work because of them.”

Fogarty is also the Literacy Champion of local children’s book, Jarjum Gurema, which teaches Yugambeh language and Mununjali totems.

Titans CEO Steve Mitchell said Jamal showed leadership on and off the field.

“He does it all quietly and doesn’t do it for the recognition or acknowledgement,” he said.

At time of print, the Ken Stephen Medal finalists were being decided through a public vote, which closed on 8 August, with the winner being decided by a judging panel.

Fogarty hoped to win the fan vote to claim the $3,500 prize on offer for his junior club, the Beaudesert Kingfishers.

The winner will be announced in September.

Fogarty with Titans until end of 2023 Gold Coast Titans co-captain Jamal Fogarty will stay with the club until the end of the 2023 season after officially signing on for another season with the club.

The Beaudesert Kingfishers junior still returns regularly to Beaudesert to visit family and give back to the community.

The halfback has been a crowd favourite since he joined the Titans NRL side full time in 2020 and continues to build a reputation as a leader on and off the field.

Silver Medal for Tamborine Equestrian The eventing team of Kevin McNab, Andrew Hoy and Shane Rose took out the silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

McNab previously ran Kelecyn Equestrian Centre in Tamborine (now operated by Charlotte Price). McNab was called into the Australian Equestrian Team when Stuart Tinney’s horse Leporis was unfit to compete the night before the event.

McNab’s Olympic debut saw him compete with legendary Australian equestrian, Andrew Hoy, who also won bronze in the individual jumping event. At 62, Hoy is Australia’s oldest Olympic medallist.

Training for the Wildcats has been suspended due to current restrictions; however, the team has been in contact via Zoom meetings.

Cahill’s selection means, once restrictions

are lifted, she will juggle training in Brisbane every Wednesday with club competitions on Tuesday nights and training on Thursday nights.

The Wildcats are set to compete in the Netball Queensland Nissan State Titles from 19-21 September at Nathan, with Cahill prepared to step up if any teammates are injured.

Local star netballer Olivia Cahill has earned selection as a shadow player and training partner for the under 16s Brisbane South Wildcats.

Cahill, known by the nickname Pickles, is vice-captain of the under 15s representative team for the Beaudesert & District Netball Association.

The 14-year-old, who has been coached by club president Debbie Love since the under 13s, gained selection against players several years her senior, from bigger Brisbane clubs.

She particularly showed her mental strength to selectors after continuing play despite breaking her finger during the trials.

Coach Love said the club was extremely proud of their Pickles.

“She’s an amazing player with impressive athleticism and this is an extraordinary achievement,” she said.

Beaudesert is gearing up for the 2021-22 Little Athletics season after registrations officially opened.

The Beaudesert and District Little Athletics Club has been the training ground for many successful Beaudesert athletes, including Olympian Riley Day. The Club offers weekly training and competitions at the St Mary’s school oval on Bromelton Street, with programs for athletes aged 5 to 17.

The season starts on 11 September and continues to March next year, with a three-week break over Christmas.

Day gave a shoutout to her family, friends and supporters back home, watching her from lockdown in their loungerooms due to the pandemic.

“The support has been overwhelming, I’m so grateful for everyone that has wished me luck, congratulated me, it’s just been incredible, and I can’t wait to celebrate with them back home,” she said.

When the commentator put the call out for a corporate sponsor to get behind Day, she took the opportunity to mention her Instagram.

Day, 21, nurtured her talent for running at Beaudesert Little Athletics and still lives locally, juggling shifts at Beaudesert Woolworths with training and university in Brisbane.

She made a huge impression at the Olympics, not just with her personal best race, which saw her nicknamed the ‘Beaudesert Bullet’, but also in her post-race interview.

After clocking a stunning 22.56 seconds in the women’s 200m semi-final, an ecstatic Day spoke candidly with Channel 7 commentator Jason Richardson.

“Holy s*** that was a much better race than this morning, I’ve got my groove and now I just hope it’s the fastest heat so I can get in the final. Because that was a massive PB. That’s awesome,” she said.

Riley’s Olympic Glory

By Susie Cunningham Lounge rooms across Beaudesert and beyond erupted with the cheers of overjoyed family, friends and fans as local sprinter Riley Day made her Olympic debut in Tokyo.

The well known and loved local powered her way to a personal best time of 22.56 seconds in the women’s 200m semi-final, placing her 12th in the world.

She narrowly missed a spot in the final but was ecstatic with her race.
