Locals Celebrate Gondwana Rainforests

By Susie Cunningham Local ecotourism champions will celebrate the regeneration of nature following the devastating bushfires of summer 2019 through the Gondwana Festival in March.

Mt Barney Lodge, Binna Burra Lodge, Park Tours and O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat will band together to deliver the inaugural event, welcoming outdoor enthusiasts from near and far.

The month long festival will culminate in the Scenic Rim Adventure Festival from 19th to 21st March at Mt Barney Lodge and will also include guided walks and talks through Lamington National Park with Binna Burra Lodge, O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat and Beechmont based Park Tours.

Innes Larkin of Mt Barney Lodge said locals were already grabbing the opportunity to explore their own backyard with the help of expert local guides.

Personality Profile

Kylie Peterson is known to many as the friendly face behind by Susie Bean To café . Beneath the cheery grin is a grateful soul who Cunningham loves the simple things in life.

When Kylie Peterson walks down the street in Beaudesert she knows just about every person. It’s why she loves the place.

She’s raised her family here and still often has a cuppa with her parents at home. You’d be forgiven for thinking she’s been here forever.

Her story actually started on the other side of the world in a place called Guernsey, in the Channel Islands off the French coast of Normandy.

Kylie was two when her parents came to Australia in 1976, so she’s got no childhood memories of Guern-

sey. But she’s returned once, for a cousin’s wedding in 2005 (all of her extended family still live there) and she gets a fond twinkle in her eye when she talks about the place.

Life in Beaudesert In 1985, when Kylie was in year 6, her parents, Trevor and Diane Hairon moved their young family to Beaudesert (their journey from Guernsey was via Melbourne and Mt Warren Park).

Kylie said it felt like a different world.

“I remember how far it was from everywhere.

Coopers Plains, and he’d drive an hour each way and only pass one or two cars,” she said.

“All my friends would say, ‘we’d love to come visit you, but we’d have to pack a lunch’.”

She said the things that made Beaudesert special remained.

“When we moved here, I loved it because it was so rural, so country, so laid back, and everybody knew everybody,” she said.

“I always wanted to bring my kids up here (Georgia, 21, Emily, 19, Oliver, 10) and I’m really thankful I did.

“Still when I walk downtown, I’ll bump into 10 people and know all of them. I just love that.”

When she’s not busy running her bustling café, Kylie treasures the simple moments.

“I just love being at home, having a cuppa with mum and dad,” she said.

“I don’t know if it’s to do with where I was born, because it’s surrounded by water, but I also have this yearning for the beach.”

Family First Seeing her dad survive cancer has been one of Kylie’s defining moments.

“When dad got cancer that was massive, then working here at Bean To with Sonya and her getting cancer and then her mum getting cancer,” she said.

“Because of every-

thing it meant, raising all that money and shaving our heads was one of the most liberating things and a really important moment.”

Ask Kylie what’s most important in life and without skipping a beat she’ll tell you.

“Family. Without a doubt. They’re just everything,” she said.

“Having kids and still being fortunate to have my mum and dad around. At 46 I’m very fortunate to have both sets of grandparents alive, all in Guernsey.”

Elders Hold First Cattle Sale in 20 Years

Graziers across the Scenic Rim supported the return of Elders to livestock auction sales .

Elders Beaudesert Manager, Mark Meldrum said it was the first sale the Branch has held in almost 20 years.

“Des Rowling was the agent for Primac Elders and when he retired sales dwindled and only private livestock sales have been conducted since about 2002,” said Mr Meldrum.

“In 2019 with a change to the Branch management, the plan was to increase the livestock and property sales footprint to provide our clients with another option of marketing their cattle in the saleyard.”

Elders Beaudesert combined with Gilliland Livestock Marketing (GLM) to put together a quality yarding of 670 head of cattle from local and surrounding areas.

Previous sales had been run at the now defunct Council saleyards at the end of Kingsley Drive, Beaudesert. Mr Meldrum said the Beaudesert Show Society had been very receptive to holding the livestock sale at the Showground.

The large number of buyers in attendance brought good prices with a pen of Santa steers from Steven Finch of Canungra topping the market at $2000. Sunkissed Quarter Horse Stud of Warrill View sold a pen of Simmental cross steers aged 15 months for $1820, while Tony and Jane Hohl and Leon and Jill Maher sold weaner steers straight off cows for $1400 - $1460.

Mr Meldrum said the sale was the first of what will be a regular monthly sale for Elders Beaudesert and GLM. “We decided to hold the sale on a Friday

which has worked well for vendors and buyers and doesn’t clash with the other sales in the area.”

The next sale is on Thursday 11th March at Beaudesert Showground, future sales will be on the first Friday of the month.

The annual Beaudesert Reunion is on again this March, bringing together community members and seeing many people return to the town to reconnect with family and friends.

Organising committee member, Shirley Antcliff says this year, for the 69th reunion, the committee invites all past and present residents and their descendants to join them during the day to celebrate with family and friends.

“Whether you were born or educated in Beaudesert, or resided in the district, please come and catch up with your friends and relatives at the Reunion,” said Shirley.

“Those who attended past reunions thoroughly enjoyed the time they have spent reminiscing and renewing acquaintances.”

Morning tea will be provided and served in accordance with COVID regulations, and refreshments are available if you supply your own lunch.

There is an entry fee of $5, with a lucky door prize, and a raffle with a number of prizes drawn on the day.

Proceeds from the day will be donated to QCWA Public Rural Crisis Fund.

Mrs Antcliff said last year the number of attendees was slightly down due to COVID concerns, but the committee expects a good crowd this year.

“Last year the reunion was held just as people in Australia were realising the impact of COVID, but plans and restrictions had not come into place,” she said.

Mrs Antcliff said this reunion is a great chance to catch up with people from the district.

Last year former Beaudesert High School teacher, Don Tanner, attended the reunion and was delighted to reconnect with several of his former students - most of whom are now in their sixties!

The Beaudesert Reunion is on Saturday 13th March 2021 at St Thomas’ Anglican Church Hall in Albert Street, Beaudesert, from 9.30am.

Celebrating Regeneration

By Susie Cunningham The World Heritage-listed rainforests of Mount Barney National Park and Lamington National Park will be in the spotlight when local ecotourism operators host the inaugural Gondwana Festival in March.

Mt Barney Lodge, Binna Burra Lodge, Park Tours and O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat will deliver the Gondwana Festival to celebrate the regeneration of the rainforest following 2019’s devastating bushfires.

Innes Larkin of Mt Barney Lodge, which will deliver the Scenic Rim Adventure Festival from 19th to 21st March as part of Gondwana Festival, said there was plenty on offer for outdoor enthusiasts.

Mr Larkin, who is Deputy Chair of Ecotourism Australia and a member of Gondwana Rainforests of Australia Community Advisory Committee, said locals had shown particularly strong interest already.

“Some of our first bookings have been from locals, and it’s a great opportunity because for a $40 weekend pass you get an under the stars film festival, live music, kids’ nature play activities, talks, information about outdoor gear and how to use it and more,” he said.

“There’ll also be epic guided mountain expeditions throughout Mount Barney National Park, including the likes of Logan’s Ridge, and

Walking the Lower Portals at Mount Barney. people are really looking forward to hearing from Michael Groom, unquestionably one of the world’s greatest big mountain climbers, who while descending from the summit of Kangchenjunga suffered crippling frostbite and had the front third of both feet

amputated. He’ll share with us his challenges and how he achieved his childhood dream and returned to the Himalayas and climbed Everest.”

Future of Saleyards Still Uncertain Financial Cost

The future of the Beaudesert Pig and Calf Saleyards is again uncertain following a decision by Scenic Rim Regional Council to appeal the inclusion of the site in the Queensland Heritage Register.

A Council spokesperson said Council is responsible under the Heritage Act for the repair and maintenance of its State heritage places.

“The cost and compliance implications for the saleyards vary depending if they continue to be an operational saleyard or if they are maintained as a historical feature only.”

Council officers recommended the appeal be lodged on the grounds that the saleyard does not satisfy the heritage criteria. However discussion in the Council meeting on 23rd February focussed on the cost of upgrading and maintaining the saleyards.

Cr Enright spoke passionately at the meeting about the importance of engaging with people responsible for the Heritage application to create a display commenorating this part of the town’s history. He said this has been a very divisive issue in the town and he is eager to resolve this conflict.

The cost of an appeal is estimated to in excess of $50,000.

A spokesperson said if Council had not carried out repairs on the saleyards three years ago to bring them to a minimum standard, they would have closed in 2018.

“Council has made every effort to keep them open and for a number of years the saleyards’ operational and maintenance costs have well exceeded any commercial return.”

“The capital outlay costs for the required compliance upgrades are yet to be fully costed but could range from $85,000 to well above $200,000 in addition to ongoing maintenance costs.”

Lions Make a Difference

If you have had one of the iconic Beaudesert Lions burgers at the monthly Beaudesert Marketfest, the chances are you already know the Beaudesert Lions do a great job.

Delve a little deeper, and you will find the Beaudesert Lions make a significant difference to people across the community week in, week out, beyond feeding the masses at local events.

Saturday, 6th March is national Lions Awareness Day, and the Beaudesert Lions are encouraging locals to stop in and say hello while buying a burger or sausage at Beaudesert Marketfest at Dick Westerman Park.

The Beaudesert Lions, who will mark 60 years of service later this year, are a small but mighty

pack of local volunteers with big hearts.

They have 26 Lions (two of these are life members) and they meet on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at the Beaudesert RSL. One of their proudest achievements is donating 200 sun protective swim shirts to local school students each year, a cause they have driven for 44 years through their annual charity golf day.

Beyond this, in the past year alone they have donated more than $7500 locally to the likes of Rural Lifestyle Options Australia, Traction, Scouts, Beaudesert Carols in the Park and more.

President Janet Coombes said it was all about supporting the local community.

“People join the Lions because they want to help. On your own you can’t always do very much but as a pack, if you like, you can,” she said.

“I think it’s important, personally, to be a mem-

ber of something that’s going to help the community. There’s always space for more Lions, everybody is welcome, all ages, and the more Lions you have the broader outlook you get. Everybody brings a different

perspective.”

Educators celebrate milestones

Local early childhood educators, Julie Fraser and Amelia Smith, have celebrated more than seven decades of experience between them.

The Beaudesert family day care operators are among four women who recently celebrated milestones with Busy Butterflies Education and Care.

Amelia Smith of Beaudesert marked 35 years and Julie Fraser of Beaudesert marked 37 years, while their colleagues Jenny Bohlsen of Jimboomba celebrated 26 years and Mayra Portillo reached 31 years.

The women have looked after more than 100 children each in their time so far.

Bulletin Starts Growing Our Own!

The next edition of the Beaudesert Bulletin will feature the first of a regular gardening and sustainability column by Bill O’Sullivan from Tullamore Farm.

Bill grew up with fruit and vegetables. His father, who along with his brothers owned fruit and vegetable shops in Ipswich, always had an eye for produce.

After a work accident Bill’s father was invalided and as a pensioner always grew the family’s vegetables.

From a very young age Bill’s weekly chores included watering, weeding and learning about the produce his family ate.

When Bill and his wife Carol purchased Tullamore Farm in the Kerry Valley in April 2014, the plan was always to have their own fresh organic produce and to become as self-sufficient as possible.

They now have six garden beds, approximately 450 fruit trees and vines with 110 different types

of fruit and are starting to sell their produce.

A former financial advisor with train the trainer qualifications, Bill not only sees the health benefits of growing your own fruit and vegetables, but the social and financial benefits as well.

“When you grow your own stuff you eat healthier,” says Bill.

“But there are also the benefits of being outside in the garden, the exercise and of course you are saving money by growing your own produce.”

Bill began sharing his journey at Tullamore Farm on the Farm’s Facebook page and connecting with other gardeners through several social media groups.

He soon found there were a number of people who were interested in the way things were done at Tullamore Farm and began running tours and workshops at the farm.

“It started with me commenting on a post in a Facebook group and people asked when they

could come and have a look at what we are doing.”

Working with the admins on the group, Bill organised a tour of the farm which has since been a popular event for many gardening groups and individuals throughout South East Queensland.

“I always tell people that the way we do things is how we do it at Tullamore Farm,” says Bill.

“Our way is not the only way to do things.”

“I enjoy seeing people come back, also seeing what they do with the knowledge they gained from visiting us at Tullamore Farm.”

Bill is looking forward to sharing his knowledge with Beaudesert Bulletin readers in his ‘Grow Your Own’ column.

of the course.”

The Club has also purchased 30 golf carts which Hughes says will give golfers a better experience.

Often the question is asked, “if God is good why does He allow evil?”

It is not uncommon to hear the response, ‘God allows evil to happen so that a greater good can come.’ I do not buy that.

The concept of a ‘good God’ allowing evil is the same as saying God is evil.

It is like a parent watching their child play on the driveway, heading onto the road on a bicycle. A truck comes down the street and they realise if the child continues, they will be hit by the truck. The parent is near enough to reach out and stop the child, but they do not. They ‘allow’ evil.

There are four things we know about God: He is not evil, He does no

evil, He sends no evil, and He allows no evil.

Then why is there evil?

If God ruled the earth, it would be like heaven. He gave dominion to man. It is man that decided to disobey and disregard God. God never overrides our free will.

Adam chose to disobey.

God gave the earth to Adam in good faith.

In Genesis, Adam committed treason and handed that dominion over to the devil. This earth has been a fallen creation ever since.

John 10:10 says, ‘The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give a rich and satisfying life.’

I pray 2021 will be rich and satisfying for you.

Choose life.

Wednesday 3rd March is United Nations World Wildlife Day. In honour of this, Beaudesert Rotary has organised a fundraising dinner at Beaudesert RSL function room. The honoured guest speaker is Dr Michael Pyne, Senior Veterinarian at the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital which yearly treats 12,000 wildlife patients including snakes, echidnas, pelicans, koalas and gliders.

There will be raffles on the night.

A painting of a koala by local artist Erin Geeves will be up for grabs. The dinner is $35 a head and it would be appreciated if you could RSVP as soon as possible.

Scenic Rim residents are very aware of the need to help native animals in the ever-encroaching urban sprawl.

Beaudesert Rotarians are one of the organisations trying to do their bit for local wildlife. About two years ago Rotary members and friends planted one hundred wildlife, mainly koala, habitat trees in a recognised wildlife corridor in the Waters Creek catchment. Other initiatives are continuing.

Coming from the bush, Doug and I have been carers for anything that landed with us. Doug used to breed birds. My family regularly looked after baby kangaroos that roo shooters handed us, pet lambs whose mothers died in childbirth, birds that maimed themselves on telephone lines or flying into windows. We leave water and food out for native birds and possums … though one squirrel-glider was seen here in our yard.

My sisters Margie and Majella are qualified wildlife carers and visits to them often involve possums, wallabies or kangaroo joeys jumping onto your lap or into your arms. My sisters Marie and Monica have both been official first port of call phone answerers for people who found injured wildlife.

Butterbean and Chorizo Stew Ingredients 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 chorizo sausage, decased and crumbled 1 brown onion, sliced 400 g can tomatoes, chopped 2 x 400 g can butterbeans (cannellini) 2 cups baby spinach leaves Cracked black pepper

Method Heat the oil in large saucepan over medium low heat, add chorizo, allowing oil to run into pan. Add onion and replace lid to cook until soft.

Add tomatoes, rinsing can with a cup of water and beans, stirring well, bring to simmer and cook gently for 10 minutes with lid on.

Add spinach leaves just prior to serving, stir through and serve with cracked black pepper.

Local bands, bulls and big rigs will be the order of the day when Kooralbyn hosts the Copperhead Rodeo on 19th and 20th March.

The Kooralbyn Valley resort will host the event at Kooralbyn’s polo grounds, adjacent to the airstrip.

Local acts including Beaudesert’s Griffin Country (20th March) and Kooralbyn’s Cannon Creek Country Band (19th March) promise to be a strong attraction for locals and the popular Colt Seavers Band from the Gold Coast will also perform on 20th March.

There will be an action-packed rodeo on both nights as well as high-energy performances from Australia’s number one whip crack-

ing entertainer, Nathan ‘Whippy’ Griggs.

The event is fully licensed and there will be a bar, food stalls and a mechanical bull on both 19th and 20th March.

Plenty of family fun is on the cards, including a Family Fun Fair from 9am Saturday, 20th March including bouncy houses, face paint, a petting zoo and more.

There will also be market stalls, a car show and a big rig show on 20th March.

The Copperhead Rodeo and associated attractions will go from 4pm to late Friday, 19th March and 9am to 11pm Saturday, 20th March.

The Scenic Rim is gearing up for a return to iconic annual event Scenic Rim Eat Local Week after being forced to take a hiatus in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The 10th anniversary Eat Local Week will be held 26th June to 4th July, with signature event, the Winter Harvest Festival, on 3rd July.

Event and stallholder expressions of interest are open until 28th February 2021.

The award-winning event contributes about $2 million to the Scenic Rim’s economy annually through 90 events celebrating the region’s food and farmers.

Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen encouraged tourism operators and businesses that produce or sell Scenic Rim food, wine or brewed products to submit an expression of interest.

“This year Council is able to waive the usual $150 event/stallholder fees thanks to a grant from the Australian Government Bushfire Recovery Initiative.

Council is also making use of these funds to extend the Winter Harvest Festival for an extra hour until 5pm with additional entertainment on the main stage,” he said.

“Potential events include long table ‘paddock to plate’ lunches, degustation dinners, wine tastings and workshops as well as free and low-cost activities for families including farm gate experiences and cooking classes.”

Proud Family Backs Gold Coast Titans

The family of rugby league success story, Jamal Fogarty, will be tipping the Titans as the Gold Coast team goes head-to-head against the New Zealand Warriors in round one of the NRL season.

Fogarty, a proud Mununjali man and Beaudesert Kingfishers’ alumnus, will run on as halfback when the Titans take on the Warriors at Central Coast Stadium on 13th March.

Even before the season got under way, Fogarty had done his family proud, donning the number seven jersey for his NRL All Stars Indigenous vs Maori debut in Townsville on 20th February.

His family, several of whom flew to North Queensland to see Fogarty in the All Stars match, will be cheering from near and far as he takes the field again in round one against the Warriors.

Donning the Titans yellow and blue will be some of his youngest nieces, nephews and family members (pictured) right through to his proud parents, siblings, aunties, uncles and cousins.

Speaking to NRL.com before the All Stars match, Fogarty said doing his family proud meant the world to him.

Bringing the Fun Back to Town

The show atmosphere has come to Beaudesert a little early this year.

With many agricultural shows cancelled in 2020, carnival ride operators have been eager to get back to work - the result is two great weekends of fun with the Food Truckin’ Fun Fair at Beaudesert Showground.

Organiser Luke Hennessy said it is great to be back doing what he loves.

“We work week in week out doing country shows and our business was turned on its head,” he said.

“I am grateful for other work last year which helped pay my mortgage but at the end of the day, we’re showmen and this

is what we love.”

“There were a lot of happy faces last night and the atmosphere was great. I was proud to be able to bring the event to my home town.”

Seven show families came together to support the event and provide a variety of rides, sideshow alley games and food trucks at the Showground.

“We really appreciate the help the Show Society has given us and the opportunity to use their grounds. The committee is always fantastic to deal with.”

Food Truckin’ Fun Fair returns from 4pm to 10pm from Friday 26th to Sunday 28th February at Beaudesert Showground.

BEAUDESERT’S HIDDEN GEMS

Possums Snuggled Among Hedges A hospital might be an unusual place to find artwork, but there are a few hidden gems at Beaudesert Hospital - other than the staff, of course!

Snuggled amongst the hedges outside the hospital entrance is a beautiful sculptured sandstone drinking fountain, with two possums seemingly kissing at the top of the bowl.

The inscription on the fountain reads ‘In memory of Dr William Ashley Beet’ and the fountain itself was commissioned

by Dr Beet’s wife, Lola and donated to the hospital in 1958.

Dr Beet was appointed medical officer to Beaudesert Hospital in 1903 and remained there until 1911 when he sailed for England as the ship’s doctor on the Fifeshire.

The ship was wrecked

off Cape Guardafui, Somaliland, but the passengers were rescued and eventually Dr Beet made his way to England.

It was on this journey Dr Beet met Lola McCamley and the two married on 3rd April 1912 at St Philip’s Parish Church in London.

After completing the Royal College of Surgeons’ diploma in public health, Dr Beet and his wife moved back to Beaudesert in August of 1912. They remained there until 1947 when Dr Beet retired and they moved to Southport, but ten years later returned to Beaudesert until Dr Beet passed away on 27th April 1957.

In the book ‘99 Years without Slumbering: Beaudesert Hospital from 1900 to 1999’ by Tom Dunn, it is said that

Dr Beet was distressed to watch children going home, hot and thirsty in summer or visiting friends and relatives without a place to stop for a drink.

The fountain was designed by modernist architect Karl Langer and sculpted by Leonard and Kathleen Shillam, wellknown sculptors from Brisbane.

Len Shillam created a life sized sculpture of a seal with its pup for Lennon’s Hotel at Broadbeach in 1954.

This sculpture is now located at the entrance of the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre and is listed on the Gold Coast Local Heritage Register.

OBITUARY - BRENDAN MCGRATH

A Farmer at Heart

Brendan James McGrath was born on 17th February 1944 to Jim and Ada McGrath. He grew up on a dairy farm at Veresdale Scrub with his younger brother, Bernard, and sister, Mary.

He attended Veresdale Scrub State school but left at the age of 13 to work the farm when his father died in 1957. He worked so Bernard and Mary could go to boarding school. He also did extra work for neighbours to earn a little more.

Mary introduced Brendan to her school mate, Margaret Daly, and so began a relationship that led to marriage on 4th February 1967.

Their first son, James Bradley was born December of that year.

Maria followed in September 1969 and twins, Damien and Leisa in October 1970. Sadly James passed away in June 1972.

The farm was sold in 1971 and the family moved up the hill to

Trewins, then to Laura Court in Beaudesert in 1974.

After leaving the farm, Brendan worked for FitzGeralds driving trucks, taking cotton from Gatton to Cecil Plains, and later worked for Beaudesert Artificial Breeders Co-op (BABC). Some time later he was asked to take ownership of the Coop business. Thus began a long association with farmers from Glen Innes to Mackay. His was also the first company to deliver liquid nitrogen to doctors’ surgeries.

It was during this time that Brendan and Karl Griess forged a friendship that lasted over 30 years.

Every ten weeks or so, Brendan left home on a Wednesday, delivered to farmers in Bundaberg, Miriam Vale, Boyne Valley, Mount Larcom, Rockhampton and arrived at Karl’s home around 5.30pm on the Thursday.

After they finished

Brendan McGrath work, Karl said he and Brendan would “have a few scotches, get stuck into the idiots running the State, have dinner with a bottle of wine, and get to bed around 8.30pm.

Brendan then left at 6am for Sarina, Mackay, Eungella and would continue travelling around the State, stopping back at Karl’s home on the way back for the usual liquid refreshments, plus interesting topics of conversation, before heading home to Beaudesert.

He finally sold the business in August 2018 and semi-retired.

Brendan loved photog-

raphy and was a member of the Beaudesert Camera Club.

He also enjoyed shooting and was a member of the Beaudesert Pistol Club for more than 20 years.

He and Margaret were founding members of the Toyota Land Cruiser club and later members of the Gold Coast 4WD Club.

Many life long friendships were made during this time.

Brendan enjoyed music and going to concerts and was very proud of his Irish heritage.

He liked to travel and explore and did a lot of

travelling for work and leisure. Trips with his young family included Cape York, the Centre and many outback trips.

Recently, he and Margaret went to Antarctica.

As a young farmer, Brendan enjoyed growing things, a passion he reignited in his retirement.

In 1985, Brendan and Margaret bought a farm, Glen Oak, on the Beardy river west of Tenterfield.

This was a beautiful place to share with those who visited.

Brendan passed away peacefully on 4th February 2021.

Logan and Albert Horse Racing Compiled by Barry Kenny The Logan And Albert Jockey Club was formed in the early 1880s.

Foundation members were De Burg Persse, Thomas Brayford, R M Collins, M Enright, P Mulcahy, R Boyd, C McDonald, W Duckett-White and John Markwell. They raced at “Kagorum”, the property of John Markwell.

This was abandoned in the floods of 1893 when the Club moved to Ilbogan where it raced for many years. The Club did not reform after World War One. Early accounts of racing, no matter where they are, always have their humorous side. We find “Thomas Brayford (was there anything that this remarkable man did not take part in!) sporting a grey beard and riding a close finish: the remark was heard, Brayford by a whisker”!

Logan and Albert Picnic Races

The really colourful race meetings were those held by the Logan and Albert Amateur Picnic Race Club, which raced at Ilbogan since 1899.

The track was pegged out in 1903 by M S Smith, helped by his son Harold. The Club held two day meetings, half of the races being for grassfed horses, the other half for ‘corn-feds’.

Most of the horses came from surrounding properties, and were ridden by owners or their sons, and in those days when women rode side saddle even their hacks were starters, often winning.

a mile and a quarter. Two days of festivities culminated in a Race Ball, the highlight of the year.

The beginning of World War 1 was the end of an era as the Logan and Albert Amateur Picnic Race Club was never revived.

The Beaudesert Amateur Race Club was formed by M J Sullivan at Ilbogan. The chief race on the program being the M J Sullivan Me-

morial Handicap. About 1966 the Club changed its name to the Beaudesert Race Club, it holds three meetings a year and was the first Race Club outside the Metropolitan area to install a photo finish camera.

If you live in Beaudesert and surrounds, the chances are you’ve popped into Duffs Secondhand Furniture at some point to fossick around for something interesting. Maybe, like us, you’ve even got a few pieces of Duffy’s furniture at your place.

The last time I popped in to see Ian Duff and take a look around his shop, I tried to buy this Beaudesert Country Festival program from 1988.

Backyard Explorers Boost Tourism The Scenic Rim is reaping the rewards of Queenslanders exploring their own backyard, according to Tourism Research Australia data.

Mayor Greg Christensen said after a year of border closures, the September 2020 year-end data showed, while visitor numbers were down in the Scenic Rim, the region fared better than other parts of south-east Queensland.

“What’s reassuring for us is that while our overnight numbers were down 21.7 per cent yearon-year, we weren’t as severely impacted as some of our neighbours,” he said.

“Brisbane, for example was down 38 per cent

compared to the same time last year, and the Gold Coast was down 36 per cent as those markets traditionally rely on overseas and interstate visitors.

“The number of visitors taking daytrips in the Scenic Rim only decreased by 3.5 per cent, which is significantly lower than in neighbouring areas, which recorded decreases between 25 per cent and 28 per cent.”

Beaudesert Pig And Calf Saleyards Following the Queensland Heritage Council’s decision to include the Beaudesert Pig and Calf Sale Yards in the Queensland Heritage Register, I would like to acknowledge the efforts of the people who submitted this application. I respect their passion for this site and the role it has played in our rural history.

While Council Officers are investigating the current and future nicRim #OneSce

impacts of this Heritage Register listing, for me it raises many more questions.

What we do know: • The Heritage listing won’t impact the current designs for the Beaudesert Town Centre Revitalisation project or its ability to provide a welcoming and attractive destination for our residents and visitors, including a playground and shaded walkways to local businesses.

• Council will still be able to deliver the original 25 per cent increase of car parks in the precinct. Importantly there will be six new caravan/RV

parking bays to enable visitors to stop, rest and shop locally.

• Following a recent independent assessment of the site, the existing sale yards are not compliant with current environmental, building, safety or animal welfare standards.

What we don’t know: • What is the extent of the ongoing financial commitment (with no end date) that will be required to upgrade and maintain this structure to the Heritage Council’s stan-

dard?

• Is there the ability to upgrade the existing facility to comply with the current environmental, building, safety and animal welfare standards, while conforming to the Heritage Council standards?

• What opportunities exist to develop this facility as a tourism destination and who would be responsible for running it?

• What grant opportunities exist to help offset the financial costs associated with

‘Sore losers’ – why can’t Council accept that ratepayers want the Pig and Calf Saleyards preserved? No mention of the potential tourism drawcard they could become for day-trippers, so close to the big smoke.

Isn’t that the whole purpose of the revitalisation?

Council’s arrogant stance breeds mistrust amongst the voting public and does nothing to promote the “We are One Scenic Rim” branding, which was noticeably absent from the media release.

Compliance activity aimed at soft targets but don’t go after the big players. Case in point: 218-226 Tamborine Mountain Road, Tamborine. Major earthworks underway for two large dams (one is 30m x 70m) but no approvals in place. An Olympic pool is 50m x 25m and holds 2,500,000lt (if two metres deep).

Has council obtained an access warrant?

Probably too busy pursuing the woman in her 70s who simply harvested some of her native cabinet-making

species trees planted as a commercial crop in the 2000s.

The Local Govt Act 2009 (Div 2 Subdiv 3) outlines Entry Under Warrant and the process for obtaining a Warrant from a Magistrate. How often does Council utilise this provision when it is aware that an offence is in progress and immediate entry is required?

Petition By now the entire Scenic Rim should be aware of the petition to the Premier launched regarding Council.

I urge every person concerned about the erosion of ratepayers’ rights to sign, either the paper version or via Change. org. Remember – each member of a household can sign separately.

Jamal’s All Stars Penalty Beaudesert Kingfishers alumnus and star Gold Coast Titans fullback, Jamal Fogarty, kicked the Indigenous team ahead with a penalty in the first half of his NRL All Stars debut in Townsville on 20th February. The 2-nil lead at the break was not enough to hold off the Maori All Stars team, with the game ending in a 10-all draw.

Soccer Club Looking to Kick Goals

Beaudesert Soccer six a side teams are excited about the upcoming soccer season.

Beaudesert Soccer Club’s six a side competition has everyone ready for the 2021 season.

The fast paced competition goes for eight weeks prior to the winter competition which starts on 17th April.

Player registration closes on 28th February and the Club is eager for players - boys, girls and seniors - from four years of age, to join them.

The Club is hoping to field teams in a number of age groups, including Senior Women and Tiny Tots.

Club President, Keiron Walsh reminded families they can apply for a FairPlay voucher through the Queenlsand Government to assist with paying fees.

Juniors Meet the Challenge!

Beaudesert tennis juniors represented their schools in the 2021 Gold Coast Annual Inter-school tennis challenge on Sunday 14th February.

This challenge joins schools and players from the Gold Coast region, many of these schools include tennis programs in their curriculum.

John Kennedy and Riley Dent played in the Primary School (Years 4,5,6) Green Ball division at GCA in Burleigh Waters.

The boys were down 5-0 in their first match but they kept the pressure on winning the next two games, unfortunately they lost 6-2 but not without a fight. They won their second match 6-1, missing the quarter finals by one game.

Logan Taylor and Stella Ahrens represented McAuley College in the Middle School (Years 7,8,9) boys division today at GCA Tennis in Burleigh Waters (mixed teams played in boy’s division).

Logan and Stella have played doubles together many times before so the team experience benefited them against strong competitors and under the extremely windy conditions.

They won two of their three matches 4-1 but unfortunately lost the last match in an extremely tight match 1-4, all four games went to deuce so the score does not show how close they came.

Beaudesert and District Tennis Association Secretary and Logan’s mother, Myleigh Taylor said both players had a great time and showed wonderful team work and sportsmanship.

Declan O’Donnell made 13 runs in his first innings and retired not out in his second innings, after making 53 runs.

Issac Ralston made 34 runs in his first innings and 46 runs in the second innings.

At the end of the match Beaudesert were 8/201 off 29 overs and 1/189 off 20 overs with Greater Springfield 7/179 off 50 overs.

Beaudesert Cricket Club’s Green Level 2A had a convincing win when they played Greater Springfield in a two day match on 20th and 21st February.

Top scorer for Beaudesert was Googie Hendricks who continued her excellent form this season by making 64 runs in her first innings and retired on 50 not out in her second innings.
