Personality Profile James Robinson wears a few hats around Beaudesert. A local developer who still enjoys being ‘on the tools’, he started the Beauy Whispers Facebook page, is part of the community and is also a devoted family man.

You are known in Beaudesert as a developer.

I don’t call myself a developer, I’m a builder.

I’ve been in the building industry for 22 years. I started at Hutchinson Builders as an apprentice, worked my way up quickly and by the time I was 21 I was running my own projects.

You still work on the tools?

A lot of people around here see me on the machines. When we were building this shopping centre, some Council-

lors came and asked guys doing the fitout and asked where I was.

The guys said you just walked past him.

They called out to me and I popped my head up out of the stormwater pit in front of the supermarket. I was in the pit grouting my own pipes.

Do you like doing that?

I love having that mix.

Sometimes all the little jobs I do, by the time I explain it to someone else, it is just easier to do it myself.

Was Oakland the first development you’ve done on your own?

Of this size, yes. I’ve done them before, but as the Construction Manager. There was so much potential and I asked what the town needed.

John Brent and Jon Krause said the town needed a new high school.

There was a Catholic Primary School so it made sense to have a Catholic High School here. So I toddled off to the Catholics and said this is what we’ve got, do you want to be involved and they said “yep”.

If you deliver projects that people need, it’s going to work.

One thing I like about my setup, is that I can have a board meeting while I’m mowing the lawn and have a resolution when I’m watching the rugby.

I went to England on a working holiday and was in a bar in London my first week there.

McAuley Students Top the State in History

Two Year 8 students from McAuley College have topped the State in the National History Challenge this year.

Emily Livingston and Kieran Cahill’s joint entry on Ned Kelly was judged by the Queensland History Teacher’s Association to take out the top prize for Year 8 students in Queensland.

McAuley College Learning Enhancement Leader and Teacher-Librarian, Melanie Burr said the girls worked independently on their project over the course of a month.

“This competition was done in their own time, but as teacher-librarian, I supervised and assisted them at lunchtimes,” said Ms Burr.

“It was not part of what they have been learning about in History this year, and as such this submission required own independent research and collaboration.”

“The theme of the Competition was ‘Contested Histories’ so they were contesting perspectives and the stories of Ned Kelly.”

“You have to be good to be the State Winners,”

Ms Cameron said.

“Their focus on Ned Kelly and how he was perceived in different ways was a great focus.”

The National History

Challenge is run by the History Teachers’ Association of Australia. It emphasises quality research and effective presentation.

A Remembrance seat has recently been installed in a memorial garden outside the Beaudesert RSL Services Club.

Beaudesert RSL Sub Branch Secretary said they applied for a grant for the garden which took two years to create.

“The Memorial Garden idea originated from a past Sub Branch and Board member Dr Robert Maher and the first part of the Australian Map monument was unveiled with Guest Major General John Pearn on October 2018,” said Joanne.

Since then, the Sub Branch has been working on completing the memorial with sandstone plinths, plaques and a totem.

“After we had completed the memorial garden in May this year, I received an email from a company that was offering the Remembrance seats and thought they were a beautiful tribute,” said Joanne.

“I wanted to purchase the seat for our memorial garden as a tribute to our Veterans past and present and would make a lovely feature for the township and community.”

“I approached the Board of the Sub Branch asking for approval to purchase the seat with the money that was left from

the grant. The President and myself chose the design and arranged for the seat to be made and installed. Clint from Mitre 10 allowed us to store it in Mitre 10 whilst waiting for the concreting to be done.”

A picture of the seat on Facebook attracted hundreds of positive comments and shares.

“The comments on Social media with regards to the seat are so overwhelming and appreciative of our gesture and quite proud in a way that the small gesture meant so much to other people,” said Joanne.

“It is an honour to go to work every day and work alongside the Veterans who have fought for our Country and continue to still volunteer their time to the Sub Branch and its members.”

Joanne said it is important to remember those who sacrificed their lives so we can have a better future.

“As Secretary of the Beaudesert RSL Sub Branch, what I do is not just a job. Each day I go to work to honour them and give back to them for what they sacrificed for us, and I hope we can continue doing this well into the future,” she said.

Land May Help PCYC Move Forward A generous offer of land in the Oakland Estate will help the proposed Beaudesert PCYC move forward.

Oakland Estate developer, James Robinson, has offered land in the Estate, should the project go ahead.

Several community leaders spoke about the need for a PCYC at a public meeting on 18th November.

Beaudesert State High School Principal, Brad Roberts, said there had been little change in support services for youth from 1992 to 2020.

“There is a gap in mental health and family well-being,” said Mr Roberts, “I feel this meeting tonight is a positive step.”

McAuley College Principal, Deidre Young, supported Mr Roberts’

comments, describing the need for a PCYC as a lay down misere.

“It takes a village to raise a child, now even more so,” said Mrs Young.

“The fringe is no longer one or two per cent, it is growing.”

Beaudesert Boxing Club coach, Justin O’Leary said he spent a lot of time in PCYCs growing up and urged people to get something going now.

“The biggest change I’ve seen in 12 years here is the number of estates,” said Mr O’Leary.

“A PCYC can provide stability that for some children will be the only stability they have in their lives. We need something in town that kids can walk to and we need it now.”

“I give my support to this as your advocate, it will meet some of the

“There is a great need for an indoor sporting facility - Beaudesert Boxing Club is a great example of what can be done.”

Senior Sergeant Ken Murray said he has

known people who said they wouldn’t be alive without PCYC. “It is more than just bricks and mortar, it becomes the culture of the town,” he said.

Meet the Team at Beaudesert Markets

The Beaudesert Bulletin team will be at Beaudesert Markets on Saturday 5th December to meet readers and get feedback on the publication.

Editor, Keer Moriarty said one of the core values of the business is to reflect what the community needs.

“The feedback we have had about the Beaudesert Bulletin has been great and we are eager to hear what we can do better and if there is anything else people in the community would like to see in their local paper,” said Keer.

The team will have calendars and stickers to give away, as well as some selfie frames for readers to take a Christmas or ‘front page’ photo.

The stickers have been designed to go onto letterboxes if people want to receive the Beaudesert Bulletin.

“One of the things that I spoken to a lot of people about is people who have ‘no junk mail’ signs on their mail boxes but still want to receive the Beaudesert Bulletin,” she said.

“We have had some stickers printed that people can put on their mail boxes if they want to receive our paper but don’t want other ‘junk mail’.

“We hope this will help

our deliverers - there are a few who have a list of people with no junk mail signs who want the paper.”

The distribution of the Beaudesert Bulletin has recently been increased to cater for more people in rural areas who want to receive the paper.

“The deliveries in the township are working well but we were still running out in Rathdowney, Tamrookum and at Ward’s Driveway where a lot of rural people were picking papers up,” said Keer.

“We have increased the print run to 3,950 this time to meet the demand.

Our advertising support has been fantastic and the businesses say they are getting great results from their ads, so I’m hoping it benefits everyone.”

The first edition of the Beaudesert Bulletin went to print on 17th July 2020 with a small team of local people putting the paper together each fortnight.

The team will produce one more edition in 2020, then have a short break and be back with more local news on 15th January 2021.

“I’m so excited for next year,” said Keer “We have some great things planned that will lift this newspaper to a new level.”

Life Membership Awarded

Beaudesert Lions Club’s Barry Preo was recently awarded Life Membership at a meeting attended by the Vice District Governor of Lions International, Nicole Phillips.

Barry’s story is one of community service spanning 50 years, two States and half a dozen Lions Clubs.

As a young NSW police officer, Barry helped Charter the Oberon Club before being moved around to Bourke, Walgett, Dubbo, and finally Orange, where he retired from the Police Service in 1996.

On moving to the Gold Coast, Barry joined the Helensvale Lions Club.

He held the positions of

President, Vice President, and Youth of the Year Co-ordinator. In addition, he was on the management Committee for Lions Haven for the Aged and Chairman for three years during a major expansion of the facility.

Barry and his wife Wendy moved to Beaudesert in 2018 and transferred to the Beaudesert Lions Club.

OBITUARY

A Remarkable Lady

The Beaudesert community was saddened by the recent passing of Josie Arthy.

This remarkable lady passed away at the age of 103 years and eight months. She succumbed to a series of strokes and faded away quietly during November 2020.

Born Josephine Mary Mathewson in February 1917, she was the second child of four to William and Effie Mathewson of Upper Coomera.

Josie enjoyed her early years when they used horses for transport. She often spoke fondly of the simpler life.

While she and her sisters were working at Beechmont milking cows, she met her future husband, Bob Arthy.

Their employer’s family had farms throughout the hinterland. On a visit

from the Chinghee Creek farm, Bob was pleased to meet the young Josie.

They married in 1937 and Josie moved to the Arthy family home at Chinghee Creek. This was to be her home for the next 83 years.

Continuing to milk cows, along with home duties, Josie worked and lived with her husband Bob and his mother for the first seven years of their marriage. Her own family - sons Percy and Ken and daughter Gayle – arrived over a period of many years.

Tennis was a popular sport of the era. Many fixtures were played on the family’s court at Chinghee Creek. Josie never played tennis, however she enjoyed cooking and catering for these events.

Anyone who knew her will have experienced her

scones, plum puddings and sponge rolls. Noone could ever be able to say they left hungry from Josie’s house.

She was also talented with sewing and craftwork. Her fine needlework and crocheted edges will be long treasured by all who possess samples of her work.

Family holidays usually fitted in with Bob’s love for fishing - Burleigh Heads for tailor, Yelarbon for yellow belly and in later years on numerous visits to Fraser Island for tailor.

On their retirement, with family members taking on the farm, Josie and Bob travelled much of Australia enjoying exploring the countryside and meeting new friends.

Surviving her husband by 24 years, Josie continued to live alone with

Josie Arthy very little assistance.

Josie enjoyed seeing her family grow and she is survived by her three children, eight grandchildren, nine great grand-

children and six great great grandchildren.

She will be missed not only by family, but also the greater community.

Rest in Peace, Josie.

It’s All Happening with Zonta!

Zonta Club of Beaudesert has ramped things up in the lead up to Christmas with several events and campaigns active.

Zonta Says No

The Domestic Violence campaign, ‘Zonta says No’ is sixteen days of world wide activism which begins on 25th November to 12th December.

“Through the Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women campaign, Zonta clubs around the world are uniting to raise their voices to bring awareness to this issue and advocate on behalf of gender-based violence survivors,” said Sharon Langenbeck, Zonta International President.

The Zonta web site says “violence against women and girls knows no national or cultural barriers; it takes place at

home, in the workplace and in open spaces, and affects millions of women and girls in peacetime and conflict.”

Zonta members have placed 24 ‘Orange Ladies’ around Beaudesert to raise awareness.

Gourmet Goodies at Beaudesert Markets Zonta will have a Gourmet Goodies and Gifts stall at the December Markets.

Members have cooked and baked Christmas items such as delicious puddings, cakes, rum balls, almond bread and more to sell on the stall to support the work that Zonta does in the community.

Beaudesert Markets are on Saturday 5th December.

JMK Women in Business Scholarship The Zonta Club of Beaudesert’s 2020 Jane M Klausman Women in Business Award winner, Sanuri de Silva, went on to win a Zonta Interna-

tional JMK Women in Business International scholarship.

Sanuri is currently completing her honours year in Finance at Griffith University. Sanuri plans to use her talents and skills to address pressing issues such as gender equality.

Dignity Bags Zonta’s Share the Dignity drive finished on 29th November with a great response received.

Our Nation Mourns The revelations that broke recently alleging our elite soldiers murdered Afghanis comes as a shock. It is ultimately a black mark against Australia. These soldiers are meant to represent all we stand for: justice, fairness, a fair go, compassion, love, and professionalism. We recognise the calling they have and their commitment to training hard, looking after their mates, and putting their lives on the line. Our hearts are broken by these allegations.

If the allegations of killing unarmed civilians or enemy soldiers in non-combat situations are proven to be true it will be a bitter pill for our nation to swallow. How will we process it? Can we come to terms with it?

If these allegations are true, we must hold those who were involved, by

either committing atrocities or allowing a culture which led to those atrocities, to account. The law must run its course. In our democracy, people are innocent until proven guilty. We espouse that as a nation.

Once the law has run its course there must be forgiveness. Yes, if these accusations prove to be true there will be consequences. Justice requires that, but the Bible says, “in justice remember mercy.”

We pray that healing will come to Afghan families who have suffered, and to the soldiers who came to be part of this dark web of unfettered illegal warfare.

Finally, if you are, or were, a serving member of our Defence Force, we honour you. And for those no longer with us, we will remember them.

Well, it looks like I’m last man standing, well second last anyway.

The Antcliffs are still my neighbours across the street as they have been for most of the last 52 years.

Geoffrey Day left this morning to move to Tasmania where his sister Marcia lives. Geoff’s grandmother Marie Stretton was my neighbour when I moved in here about August or September 1959.

For just about 52 years, I have lived in my Anna Street home. For the better part of 1969 I lived around the corner in Jane Street. My first husband Terry Sheil, my three year old son Jimmy and nearly two year old son David “Tooty” and I all arrived in our little red Anglia. We arrived in the afternoon of New Year’s Eve 1968.

After moving into this house we had Marie Stretton next door, Freddy O’Brien, Aggie Brown and Gunna (who moved years ago) and Cyril and Shirley Antcliff across the street and Hammermeisters next door. One of Gunna’s daughters, Julie, married Tony Hodgson, on Anna Street/ Street corner. Mark and Gail Hodgson moved after selling Beaudesert Times.

Freddy O’Brien died about 15

years ago. He used to grow and sell strawberries. Colleen Brown and Reg bought the house built on the strawberry patch. Twenty-seven years later, they moved near Biggenden. Coming home from visiting Doug Drescher’s brother Barry, I recognised Reg’s car so stopped by, told him if he wanted to hide, get a car whose number plate I didn’t know! The new people on the strawberry patch put a granny flat behind Colleen and Reg’s house.

Aggie Brown moved to Wongaburra. She died at 93. The folk who bought her little cottage put up flats at the back.

Hammermeisters moved out of the house next door a few years ago and a delightful young lady with two beautiful doggies moved in.

The very last of the Stretton/Day family has gone. Three generations of that family have been my wonderful neighbours. Now we are looking forward to meeting a new neighbour!

Scuttlebutt has it that the son bought it for his dad to move into and “Wild parties don’t appear to be on the horizon in the near future”.

It’s hard to believe that the current Toyota RAV4 is the fifth-generation of the SUV with the first generation launched in 1994.

Beaudesert State High School Awards Night recognised the top students in one of the largest schools in South East Queensland.

Principal, Brad Roberts congratulated the students on their achievements, during what he described as “a year like no other”.

Speakers during the evening acknowledged the students who received awards as future leaders of the community.

School Captains Brooklyn Roberts and Phoenix Senhenn were the Masters of Ceremony for the evening.

Phoenix gave an inspiring valedictory speech while Brooklyn left students with the words of Anne Frank. ““How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world”. If we all move from tonight with this perspective, we move one step closer to greater success.”

Ladybrook Farm has brought Christmas cheer to the Kerry Valley with their hay bale sculptures of Santa and his reindeer!

The Harrison family were behind the Bluey and Bingo hay bale sculptures that went viral earlier in the year.

The family put together Santa and his reindeer during the recent heatwave and Sue Harrison said while it was hot work, the children were very happy to go for a dip in the river when they were finished.

Adopt a Grandparent This Christmas SHOP T his LOCAL C hristmas

Residents at Whiddon Beaudesert will have something a little special to look forward to this Christmas.

Adopt a Grandparent, a program run by Kelly Casey of Biddaddaba is working with Whiddon to provide some extra cheers for Whiddon residents who may not have family to send them gifts this Christmas.

Kelly started the program after her own grandparents went into aged care and she met people who didn’t have regular visitors.

Residents of Whiddon Beaudesert provided tags with their names and gift

ideas. Some of these are as simple as dark chocolate, Pepsi Max or copies of TV Week.

Adopt a Grandparent started with 10 residents in two nursing homes. In 2019 it reached over 300 residents across ten aged care facilities.

“I have done this for the past two years - this is my third,” said Kelly.

“Giving these people something little makes them feel good and can make their Christmas day.”

Whiddon Beaudesert Leisure Coordinator Robert Campbell expects Adopt a Grandparent will lift his residents’ spirits

over Christmas.

To provide a gift, go to Canungra Hub cafe, take a tag off the tree and return it with your gift provided in a gift bag. All gifts will be delivered to the aged care facilities, adhering to COVID regulations.

Kelly asked for gifts to be taken to Canungra Hub by 15th December.

Kelly is looking for Beaudesert businesses interested in hosting a giving tree and gifts in 2021.

Christmas Cake

Serves: 15 - 20.

Prep time: 10 minutes plus 24 hours soaking time.

Cook time: 60 - 90 minutes INGREDIENTS 1kg mixed dried fruit 500 - 750ml orange juice, no added sugar 1 cup wholemeal self-raising flour 1 cup self-raising flour 1 teaspoon all spice

What’s Great About It? This easy recipe shows that even Christmas cake can be health-a-sized!

Making a few simple swaps such as half the flour for wholemeal flour, opting for a ‘no added sugar’ orange juice, and removing the added sugars makes this cake the perfect treat this Christmas.

METHOD Soak fruit overnight in 500mL of orange juice in the fridge. Preheat oven to 160°C conventional/140°C fan-forced. Add flours to the fruit and juice mixture and stir until combined. Pour in more orange juice if the mixture is too dry. Sprinkle in allspice and place mixture into a lined 20cm baking tin. Bake in oven for 1-1½ hours or until a skewer comes out clean.

The ever increasing cone of silence under which our Council operates. Audio of the Ordinary Meeting held 23rd November was enlightening. Since the 2020 election, no less than 14 complaints have been assessed by the Independent Assessor in relation to SRRC Councillors; all have been dismissed - details available: https://www.scenicrim.qld.gov. au/downloads/file/4215/councillor-conduct-register-as-at-20-october-2020.

This is not the full extent of the complaints lodged to date, only those finalised. Perhaps Council could apply its resources to ensuring its councillors engage in legitimate behaviours rather than wasting ratepayers’ money on kindergarten behaviour and vindictive complaints. Time council encouraged adult behaviour at senior level. Surely the CEO has more significant matters to which to apply his time.

Bouquet Wishlist: Council retain live streaming and audio recording of its Ordinary Meetings once COVID restrictions are lifted. The published Minutes of meetings fail to capture the inappropriate meeting behaviours. At least the behaviours displayed (and recorded) during the two most recent Ordinary Meetings has improved noticeably.

The first training night of the Beaudesert Fire Brigade was held on 7th August 1929.

The only equipment the brigade had at the time was a small hand operated transfer pump to transfer water, a Model T Ford one ton truck fitted with an old engine from a travelling picture show, and a pump from the Butter Factory.

LADIES BOWLS ROLLS ON

Beaudesert Bowls Club’s Ladies Committee for 2021 was recently announced.

Gaye Blank was voted President with Daphne Harlen and Barbara Short as Vice Presidents.

This is Gaye’s first year as Ladies President and third year on the board, she has been Games Director and Vice President.

“I love my bowling and I’ve met wonderful people and they’ve taught me a lot,” said Gaye.

“I hope I can give some of that back. The Bowls Club does a wonderful job and it is a very friendly Club with great atmosphere for all ages.”

“We rely on volunteers and that is social as well, they come out and help but they enjoy seeing each other too,” she said.

Mental Toughness Required

A little known part of the Beaudesert sporting community is the Beaudesert Pistol Club.

Located at 281 Brookland Road, Allenview, the club has been operating for more than 50 years.

The Club is affiliated with Pistol Shooting Queensland at the State level, and Pistol Australia at the National level.

Club Secretary, Vey Payne says these affiliations provide a pathway for members with the ability to progress to state, national and international representative events.

“Being an affiliated Club gives members access to training in areas such as range officer courses, weapons safety training, skills development courses or moving to competition judge level training courses,” said Vey. The Club has four ranges which cater for several Pistol Australia matches including Olympic and Commonwealth Games events.

Three of the ranges are outdoor ranges, with the firing line under cov-

er and with distances of 25 metres and 50 metres which allow for standard, rapid fire, 25 metre (sport), centre fire, black powder matches, and 50 metre pistol matches to be accommodated.

While the Club is predominantly a pistol club, there is also room for small calibre rifle matches to be accommodated up to a maximum range of 50 metres. There is one indoor range that is used for the 10 metre air pistol and air rifle matches.

“Whether you are a competitive shooter or a social shooter, Beaudesert Pistol Club can help you enjoy the sport of target shooting,” said Vey. Shooting is promoted as a sport for all ages with the minimum age for acquiring a concealable licence in Queensland being 11 years old. There are members of the club who are well into their 80s.

Junior members under the age of 18 require a parent or guardian to become a licence holder and Club member to meet legislation requirements.

“The Club has survived COVID, but planned events for 2020 had to be cancelled,” he said.

“However we are looking forward to the New Year and planning some education and training events for the benefit of members.”

“Like any community sporting club, the com-

mittee realise that the future can only be guaranteed if there are junior members and more women coming to the sport.”

“The Club’s committee welcomes new members who would like to try pistol shooting as a sport.”

“While fitness is required, as in most sports, shooting also requires mental toughness and practice to succeed. But there is a social side that

is family friendly and easy going if that is what you are looking for,” said Vey. A ‘Come and Try Day’ is being planned for early next year for those who may wish to come to the Club and see what the sport of pistol shooting entails.

Beaudesert Gets Pickled!

Beaudesert & District Tennis Association hosted the town’s first Pickleball demonstration where 50 people of all ages gathered to try the fast growing sport.

Pickleball is a paddleball sport that combines elements of badminton, table tennis, and tennis. Two or four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymer ball, with 2640 round holes, over a net Organisers Wayne Jackson and Leeanne Deegan said they were delighted with the response to the event.

President of Queensland Pickleball, Jen Ramamurthy said she is involved in coaching people from age 18 to 84 in Brisbane.

“The great thing about Pickleball is it appeals to all ages,” said Jen. “It is a game of strategy so older people can play younger people and hold their own, because it is not about strength and

power.”

Jen said it was not unusual for people in their eighties to play well against twenty year olds.

Pickleball is for people of any age or ability and not just for those who have played tennis or other racquet sports.

Wayne’s brother, Ron, started a Pickleball club at Ormiston where their whole family play.

Wayne is hopeful that a suitable venue can be found in Beaudesert for regular games.

“It is a great game and it is so popular with people. Once they try it, they love it,” said Wayne.

Pickleball games are played on a compact court of approximately 20 metres by 10 metres.

It can be played either indoors or out doors and games last about 11 minutes.

Kyle Takes on Brown Trousers

Kyle Addy started rock climbing two years ago and in that time has reached heights others within the climbing community will only ever dream of.

Kyle says he always loved being out in the bush and used to go bushwalking with his father.

When he started going to an indoor climbing gym it sparked the desire to take on some of the hardest climbs in Queensland.

He met Alex Mougenot through the indoor gym and the two quickly became friends.

Alex was a mentor to Kyle initially, and the two of them have taken on increasingly challenging climbs. Recently they took on one of the hardest traditional climb in Queensland near Boonah, ‘Brown Corduroy Trousers’, rated at a grade 28.

“Anyone can climb up to grade 10 to 11,” said Kyle.

“The hardest climb in Queensland is a 32, which is also near Boonah.”

Kyle says preparing for

the climbs involves a lot of preparation.

“We have to plan the climbs, the equipment we need, how we are going to do it.”

“It took three or four days to plan the Brown Corduroy Trousers.”

In between climbs, Kyle trains by going to the indoor climbing gym, or practicing holds.

“It is a sport that is very physically and very mentally challenging.

We need to make sure we can hold our bodyweight on holds that might only be five to 10 millimetres wide.”

Kyle says this can also involve training on a hangboard to build up the tendons in his hands and arms. Literally hanging by his fingertips to get the strength he needs when climbing.

“Everyone is different in their climbing because they are physically different. What works for me might not work for someone else. Their reach or their strength might be different.”

“I really enjoy the mental part of climbing too. Mentally you are battling yourself all the time you are climbing, fighting self doubt. It’s scary, but it’s safe.”

Kyle and Alex’s Brown Corduroy Trousers climb was filmed by another climbing friend of Kyle’s, Vincent Tran from Suika Studios to capture the biggest challenge the men have done to date.

The next challenge is “Whistling Kite” a grade 32 climb near Boonah that only seven climbers have completed.
