Erica and husband Ju lian - who both grew up surfing - were involved in triathlon themselves for about a decade or so.She recalls grass roots triathlons at Lake Moogerah through to when the Australian triathlon team made its Commonwealth Games ‘demonstration sport’ debut at Auckland in 1990. Erica and Julian took over the family dairy farm in Numinbah Valley in about 2000 She had been visiting on weekends since her dad bought it when she was 5 but had no expe rience in running a dairy farm.Erica quickly became an advocate through Women in Dairy, taking the social and econom ic impacts of deregulation to then Primary In dustries Minister Henry Palaszczuk, and she was also voted in as Presi dent of South Coast Co operative Dairy. When it was deemed too risky financially to continue dairying, the family shifted to thor oughbreds in the Nu minbah Valley and near Beaudesert.“Wewere gutted to leave dairying - I loved my cows,” she said. “Really, we went straight from fashion to farming, from having a really good business to a farm worker’s wage, but nothing we’ve ever done has been just about the money - we’re all heart.” Beaudesert just feels like home to Erica. Erica especially re connected with Beau desert in 2012 when she joined the push against coal seam gas and discovered Arts in the Olives and BAD CAP (Beaudesert and District Community Art Project).Sheand Julian moved into a beautiful home south of Beaudesert in March this year and she is now President of BADCAP. Her local connections date back to when her grandfather James Shepherd brought the first print ing press to Beaudesert in 1904 and owned Shepherd’s Beaudesert Hotel, and her dad was born here in 1916. Now, Erica and Julian are continuing their family’s story in the broader area through sons Shannon and Dylan, Dylan’s partner Jayde and grandchil dren Ben, 17, Eveleigh, 3, and Maverick, 6 months.

Erica Bates started sewing at 6, opened her first clothing shop on the Gold Coast at 19, built an award-win ning sportswear label and has come full circle back to her passion for sustainable fashion. Her grandmother was a seamstress, so Erica was basically born with thread running through her veins, and it helped that her parents were supportive and instilled self-belief in her from a youngThatage.self-belief and heartfelt sense of con viction has been clear throughout Erica’s life from fashion to farming, environmental activism to the arts. “This is a life of ac tion, not just good intentions” That is the slogan on a clothing tag from Erica’s award-winning 1980s sportwear label, EB Sportz Australia. When triathlon came to Australia in the 1980s Erica basically pio neered triathlon wear. All the top triathletes wore EB Sportz, and the label won runner-up for active sportswear in the iconic RAQ (Retail Asso ciation of Queensland) Fashion Design Awards in 1983 and 1985.

As time progressed two wonderful playing fields were developed and a new club house was built.Coral Antcliff and her family purchased land and built a house in Drumley Street and Coral had a grandstand seat to watch rugby league. Whilst Coral was a very talented lady and capable sportsperson, pianist, gardener, animal lover, she had a 'life sen tence' with Beaudesert Rugby League from that time.Aboundary fence was built around the grounds with a gate opposite Coral’s house, giving her easy access onto the ovals. The old farmhouse became the initial club house with a canteen de veloped out of the laun dry area and Coral often worked in that canteen. Internally, with the constant thought to save money, the new club house was built with tiles on the floor so that Cor al could easily push the broom over it and mop it out after the many ac tivities – training nights, bingo nights, fashion pa rades, cent auctions etc and of course after homegames. When the club became financial enough to buy its own ride-on mower, Coral, along with Ron Willis, spent hours mow ing the ovals and sur rounds. When the club devel oped its own irrigation system from a bore, Cor al took on the job to move the irrigation pipes, again with Ron Willis, to keep the grounds in pristine condition.Coralwas before her time, as were some 30 other women when two teams of local women played BRLW at Willis Park.Itwas something un heard of in those years and they must surely be pioneers in women’s rug byWhilstleague.Coral Antcliff’s life was much more than Beaudesert Rugby League, few can claim to have donated as much time and effort. What is truly indicative of the love felt towards Coral is the number of Life Members who paid their respects to one of their own at the Uniting Church on 9 August.

Coral's dedication to the Kingfishers spanned decades.Inthe 1960s a few ded icated members went cap in hand to three Beaudes ert businessmen, asking them to be guarantors for money to purchase an old farmhouse and a few acres on the corner of Petersen, Beetham and Drumley Streets. The intention was to develop the land with two playing fields and a clubhouse for Beaudesert Rugby League. At this stage Beaudes ert was the only town to provide Rugby League from Chambers Flat, Greenbank, Jimboomba through to the NSW bor der.Much work had to be done to turn a cow pad dock into two playing fields. Members arrived with their cars and push mow ers. Many rocks were collected off the fields and loaded into the boots of those cars and old Hugh Blow’s truck (with Hugh’s family helping).

“I really don’t think about it a great deal at all. The thing I think most of is that it’s over - that’s me,” he said. I can’t lis ten to that song - it sends shivers up my spine,” he said.Steve Mackie was 19 when he served with the Army in Vietnam. “Just the people who were lost, people who were wounded or suf fered for life and that also includes all our veterans who suffer with mental illness and PTSD - those are the things I think about the most,” he said. “They’re the main things to come here to day for. Our mates. We’re lucky to be here still.”

The service was heart felt and brief when the Beaudesert RSL Sub Branch hosted its Viet nam Veterans’ Day me morial on 18 August. When Janice Heit set up her folding table and chairs on William Street on a draughty August day, it was to make sure people would never forget Aus tralia’s Vietnam Veterans. With a Vietnam scarf around her neck to pro mote the cause and ward off the chill, Mrs Heit ar ranged a small collection of merchandise on her table on 10 August, the week before Vietnam Vet erans'TheDay.merchandise - caps, stubby coolers and badges - sat atop a crisp cotton Beaudesert RSL Wom en’s Auxiliary tablecloth, freshly ironed by Sub Branch Vice President CarolBeforeCastles.Mrs Heit had even properly set up, she had sold four badgessuch is the support from Beaudesert locals.

The importance of remembering Mrs Heit, a founding member of the Beaudesert RSL Women’s Auxiliary and a devoted Sub Branch volunteer, has been buoyed by the support of locals for years. As well as selling mer chandise ahead of com memoration services throughout the year, she crafts items like a wooden cross with ‘lest we forget’ and poppies on it and can dles to display at the me morials.MrsHeit said it was important to keep raising awareness about those who served. “I think of all those who didn’t come back and those who did come back and struggled on a daily basis,” she said. “You’ve got to try and understand what they went through. Vietnam Veterans’ Day is a very important day like Anzac Day, Remembrance Day. It’s something you can’t forget let alone get over.” She spoke about her personal connection to Vietnam Veterans’ Day through her late husband Raymond Heit, who served in Vietnam. “His nickname was Whisky and he used to run butcher shops,” she said. “I think of him every day and I still miss him dearly - he passed away in 2008.”Mrs Heit encouraged all locals to take the time to pause and reflect. “We must never forget - a lot of veterans think they’re forgotten but they’re not,” she said. “Sometimes veterans just need somebody to sit and listen, to take that time.”

Here is a moment from out on the road, getting stories for the newspaper recently. That afternoon, I drove to the Lost World via Christmas Creek, back across Darlington Connection Road to Hillview then across Rudd Lane to Palen Creek for a cuppa (and of course an interview and photo), with Gary Moloney.

There was something striking about the frostbitten grass and dusty old road against the lush greens of Lamington National Park and a sky heavy with afternoon drizzle. I couldn’t help but pull over and take a photo of this vast beauty, so close to our township, and pinch myself that I was actually out here for work.

And the show goes on... I'm writing this two days out from Canungra Show. As President of Canungra Show Society this year, it's been a bit tricky. Three years of not run ning events has taken its toll on equipment (thanks rats), volunteers (who moved away, got new jobs or sadly passed away) and the community (who are out of sync with having these events, let alone knowing they are run by volunteers).

Two weeks after the Canungra Show, the Beau desert Show will be on and I have to give a huge shout out to Ian Harrison who has been involved with the Beaudesert Show for over 25 years. That man must have a huge amount of patience andLikeresilience!Canungra, Beaudesert Show is coming back after not being able to run events due to COVID regulations and things have certainly changed in thoseOneyears.thing that remains the same is these organ isations are reliant on volunteers. Without volun teers the Show and many other events just would not happen. Every hour you can spend helping out is an hour lifted from someone who might be put ting days or weeks into getting this event happen ing. So a small thing for you might be a huge help to someone else. If you think you would like to help out, get in touch with the Beaudesert Show Society and see where they need assistance - it might be on one of the show days or it might be getting ready or pack ing'Manyup. hands make light work' is very true!

It is sad for communities who will lose their local newspaper. Years ago, the local paper was the backbone of a community. The people who owned the paper and the people who worked there were involved in their communities, they had their finger on the pulse and they knew the people in the towns. No doubt this is still true for local journalists - but how many of those jobs will be shed in the move to digital? What will the record keeping of townships look like? How can truth be disseminated without this grassroots vehicle of news? Because it is easy to see that a report about the refurbishment of the soccer club’s canteen or ‘what we did in the pandemic’ is real and true, but who will remember this when they are relegated to the archives of the internet? Where are the pictures to cut out and keep on the fridge? Or does none of that matter? The Canungra Times belongs to me, but really it belongs to the community and I’ll keep doing what I can to make sure that continues.

Beaudesert’s Phil Tar linton vividly remembers the Duck Creek Road movement of the 80s.

“We’d all go up there and do working bees and do our little bit to get an outcome, and of course, Don was always talking to me about the road.”

He was managing Beaudesert Hardware Mitre 10 for the late Don Franklin OAM at the time and was part of the Junior Chamber of Com merce (Jaycees).

“I’ve had this interest since the 80s, but I was Phil Tarlinton. one of many people - I had no official role, I wasn’t on the commit tee,” he said. “But in later times, be fore it was closed, I could see it didn’t have the rec ognition in terms of re cording the history of it, so that’s when I started to get an interest in trying to put to gether some of theInstories.”2016, be fore the road closed, Mr Tarlinton was among volunteers who installed fences on property boundaries and more than 50 new signs through community and chamber support.

“I got involved with Duck Creek Road from a Jaycees perspective, which is what all service clubs did in those times; it was just normal ap proach to everyday com munity life,” he said.

This financial year will see the commencement of significant road upgrade to Veresdale Scrub Road between the Mt Lindsay Highway and Fields Road. Gould Hill Road was complet ed earlier this year using this new blend and has held up considerably well considering the amount of rain we have had this year.

ConsultationCommunity One of the most en joyable parts of being a Councillor is the interac tions and talks that I have with residents. I am not shy about just stopping and talking to someone who have just pulled into their driveway or are walking along the road. I like and need to hear what you have to say about what you need in your community. If you see me out and about give me a wave and I will stop for a chat. Quote of the day Nearly all men can stand Adversity, but if you want to test a man’s true character, give him power.

No new Planning & Environment court cases involving Council. • 1578/22 – Gillespie -vSRRC. (The Onsens and cabins). Appeal against a Council “deemed refus al”. The 40 plus Co-re spondents by Election in the Appeal are all now required to attend the next directions hearing on 7 September 2022 (we may need to hire a bus), present individual Affidavits and individual Draft Orders to enable me to represent them so that these people do not need to traipse into Brisbane for numerous future Re views. This is apparently re quired as the Judge is un able to satisfy herself that I did not file documents containing forged signa tures with the court! I have been unable to identify a single P&E Court appeal where these actions were required previously, however it appears we have been operating with the court’s discretion for the past 10 years ... but no longer. What a good thing that the Tamborine Mountain Progress Assn Inc has en gaged a top P&E solicitor and had a barrister repre sent them on 17 August 2022.Estimated costs for the duration of the appeal: $100K. Fundraising has •commenced.BD1308/22 – Torcross Investments Pty Ltd -vSRRC. Appeal relates to Council’s refusal of a one into two lot subdivi sion at 27 Curtis Road, Canungra. Timetable: Lay Witness Statements 5 September, Meeting of Experts by 12 September, Statements of Evidence 25 October, Review 2 No vember, Further Review in January 2023 and four day hearing in February 2023. I wonder what this will cost ratepayers? • Appeal 2001 of 2021 –two and three storey “dis ability tourist cabins” at 1-11 Eagles Retreat Place, Tamborine Mountain. Re view: 5 September 2022. Five day hearing com mences on 12 September 2022, with a site visit to occur on day one. It will be de rigueur for those attending to don hiking boots – trek king poles optional but highly recommended. This appeal commenced on 02 August 2021.

The following are my views, not those of the Editor. Any threats of legal action can be directed to me. Brickbat Potholes…..and more potholes.Thelack of road repairs seems to be a job creation scheme in its own right if the number of damaged wheels, tyres and vehicle suspensions are anything to go Theon.big question is whether the roads will be “roadworthy” before the predicted next six months of rain hits the Scenic Rim. METHOD

Place leek in a medium-large saucepan pot on medium heat. Cook for 3-5 minutes until leek softens. Place broccolini, cauliflower, garlic and stock in a large pot. Bring soup to the boil, then cover and simmer for 20 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Remove saucepan from heat and puree with a stick blender until smooth. Serve with toasted walnuts, parmesan, thyme and a dollop of yoghurt.

We grow a lot of plants and shrubs which are used in either our com post or pruned and then used as mulch. One of our favourites is comfrey and I have previously written a column on comfrey. Some of the other sup port species we grow are Pigeon Pea, Cassa va, Bana Grass and Ar rowroot. These are used mainly to mulch our fruit trees. They are quite har dy and bring a lot of nutri ents up from deep in the soil. They are generally good clay breakers. When they get to a reasonable size, we do a good prune and leave on the ground as mulch. This is called Chop and Drop. These prunings break down over time and help retain moisture plus add nutrients to the soil. Whilst most of these support species are edible we grow them mainly to be used as ground cover (mulch) around the base of our fruit trees. The plant shown here is Arrowroot and we have quite a few clumps grow ing in selected areas. The tubers (below ground) can be used all year round as a potato substitute. They can be cubed and used in soups or cooked like potatoes. In many countries they are used as a flour substitute. Their most famous use in Aus tralia is in a biscuit, made since 1888 by Arnott’s. Yes - the golden oldie but still very popular Milk Arrowroot biscuit. For us, Arrowroot is a very generous producer of quality biomass for our compost bins and as chop andTheydrop.grow to about a metre tall and we general ly cut them at the base ev ery few months and then either spread the cuttings on the ground as mulch or off to the compost bins, as they soft and fleshy and breakdown well. In a very short time the Arrowroot has grown back and we repeat the process.Growing support crops provides quality inputs to your growing areas at minimal cost.
