Personality Profile Marie Taylor has been playing competitive squash since 1960 but has recently decided it is time to hang up the racquet. She has found a new sport through U3A.

You’ve been playing squash for 60 years, why have you decided to retire?

In March when COVID hit, the squash courts at Acacia Ridge where I played closed down temporarily. I decided at 81 I didn’t want to keep driving to Brisbane to play squash.

In my last Australian Masters Squash tournament on the Gold Coast last year, I played in the Women’s 80-84 section and came third.

It seems a good note to go out on.

When did you start playing squash?

I started playing in 1960 in Brisbane. We used to drive up there and back every week to play. We were living in Rathdowney then.

Later, in 1973, they built squash courts in Hart Street which are used for Martial Arts training now, but were built for squash courts and used for 33 years.

How did you balance that with your family?

I played squash at night mainly so it was easy to manage with the children. Our children played sport too, mainly tennis, and we would drive them to that as well.

Where did you play then?

That’s when I started playing at Acacia Ridge, I played there until March this year.

What was it that attracted you to the game?

I just found it a great game. Squash is very friendly, very social. It is a great way to meet people and make friends. I’m not very competitive but I enjoy sport and keeping active, and the social side of it.

You have competed in Masters Games and Masters Squash - did that involve a lot of travelling?

Yes, we travelled to

Marie Taylor all the capital cities playing squash, we did every state. It was a great way to see new places.

What has been the highlight for you?

I’ve played in a lot of Masters competitions but the highlight was the Masters Games in Canberra where I won a Gold Medal.

You’ve been fit and active all your life what will you do now?

I’ve started playing table tennis with U3A in Beaudesert. It is great fun, a very social mixed

competition. We have up to 20 people playing, and some of them are people I played squash with years ago.

In 2003 Marie Taylor was awarded the Viv Reedman Award by the Queensland Masters Squash Association.

This award is based on performance, presentation, sportsmanship and behaviour on and off the court.

Marie has certainly shown herself to be a great sportsperson throughout her sporting career.

Beaudesert’s Archibald Finalist

Monica Rohan’s stunning portrait of fellow artist, Lucy Culliton has earned her a place as a finalist in the prestigious Archibald Prize.

Monica was born in Beaudesert and grew up in the town, before attending the Queensland College of the Arts, where she graduated with Honours in 2011.

In 2016, Monica was successful with her first attempt at entering the Archibald Prize, becoming a finalist with her portrait of fashion label duo, Pamela Easton and Lydia Pearson.

She has also been a recent finalist in The Gold Award, Redland Art Award and the Churchie National Emerging Art Prize.

Monica was selected for the significant survey show, Goma Q, which showcased Queensland artists at QAGOMA in 2015.

Her work is held in a number of private and public collections, including Artbank, University of Queensland Art Museum, QAGOMA, Museum of Brisbane, Tweed Regional Gallery

and the Griffith University Art Museum.

The subject of Monica’s 2020 Archibald entry, Lucy Culliton, is a regular finalist in the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes and has works in this year’s Archibald and Wynne.

“Lucy is a beloved Australian artist known for her paintings of the vibrant garden and animal sanctuary of her home, as well as its rugged surrounds,” said Monica.

“I wanted to paint Lucy’s portrait because I feel we share an interest in celebrating colours and patterns found in the everyday. As we walked through her beautiful garden, I had Lucy stand beneath a selection of her favourite flowering trees.”

“I wanted my painting to represent the natural connection Lucy has to the landscape she’s nurtured at her home. While working on the portrait back in my small studio in Brisbane, bushfires raged down south, creating a strange juxtaposition between the lush haven of Lucy’s garden

The Archibald Prize is awarded annually to the best portrait, ‘preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in art, letters, science or politics, painted by any artist resident in Australasia’.

This open competition is judged by the trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Finalists are displayed in an exhibition at the Gallery (although in the early years all entrants were hung).

Although it is a non-ac-

quisitive prize, several entries are now part of the Gallery’s collection.

First awarded in 1921, it is one of Australia’s oldest and most prestigious art awards. Judged by the trustees of the Art Gallery of NSW and awarded to the best portrait painting, the Archibald Prize exhibition is a who’s who of Australian culture – from politicians to celebrities, sporting heroes to artists.

The winner of this year’s Archibald Prize is Vincent Namatjira’s portrait of footballer Adam Goodes.

Vincent said he first met Adam Goodes in 2018 when he visited the school in Indulkana where Vincent lives, as part of his work promoting Indigenous literacy.

“When I saw the documentary The Final Quarter about Adam’s final season of AFL, my guts were churning as I relived Adam’s experiences of relentless racism on and off the field,” said Vincent.

“Memories of my own experiences were stirred up and I wanted to reach out and reconnect with Adam.”

Kylie Moss has been a part of Beaudesert’s music scene for many years and now Kylie, together with Tony Griffith and Jim Trannell are bringing music back to the heart of Beaudesert.

GTM Music Studios is a new concept bringing together music lessons, a recording studio and jam nights under one roof.

Opening on 24th October in the Post Office Plaza in the centre of Beaudesert, GTM Music Studios is set to be a great asset to the local music community.

Each of the partners in the business brings their own unique skill set. Jim teaches bass and guitar as well as repairing instruments. Tony’s skills as a drummer are well known and Kylie is currently completing a Bachelor of Song Writing.

Their dream is to bring a community facility to the town where people of all ages can learn, share and enjoy music.

“We will be offering individual and group music lessons for all ages, but it will also be a space where people can come and play music together,”

said Jim. “We will also have workshops on recording with basic equipment so that kids can come in and learn to record with Garage Band and other apps that are affordable.”

Kylie said the trio have been thinking about establishing this space for the past two years, but the past eight months while they have not been able to perform have given them time to formulate the basis of the business.

Jam Nights will be a regular part of GTM Music Studios, with students and younger people invited to perform early in the evening, and more experienced musicians performing afterwards.

“We want to provide a supportive space for people to perform and get feedback,” said Jim. Kylie will run song writing workshops and help local musicians who want to take their craft a step further through recording or learning more about playing live gigs.

GTM Music Studios opens on Saturday 24th October and the first Jam Night is on Friday 30th October.

JO IS READY TO RIDE WEST

Last year Jo Perry rode 750km in the Girls Got Heart charity bike ride across Western Queensland. This year she took it a bit further.

Jo rode 1200km over seven days in the RideWest charity ride, raising funds and awareness of mental health issues in regional Australia through the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

“The longest day was the last day,” said Jo, “That’s the one we do 240 kilometres.”

To train for the event, Jo did ‘short rides’ of 30 to 50 kilometres during the week and longer rides of at least 100 kilometres on both days of the weekend.

Jo says the support she received from members of local cycling club, Beaudesert Bugs, has been invaluable.

“I do lots of the long rides around here. I have a lot of friends in the Bugs group, and I’ve got a very dedicated group of four guys - Michael Enright, Zac Cunningham, Aaron Collis and Ken Ardrey, who have been joining me on some of the longer rides,” she said.

“They love to ride that length of ride so they often join me. The whole Bugs group is a very supportive group.”

The causes of Rural Health and Mental Health resonate with Jo. “Even though I’ve been in Beaudesert for 25 years, I still see it as a country town,” she said.

“I grew up in Woodenbong and I remember how difficult it was, we had to go to Lismore for health.”

“It is actually good mental health for me.

I can throw the phone away, just get out and ride and nothing else matters. There might be

a bit of pain associated with it, but there are benefits too.”

“Riding out there is amazing. It is difficult, long and flat, although you have to get over Toowoomba range, but the people out there are

so welcoming. They line the streets and you feel like a bit of a superstar sometimes.”

SES Week - Celebrating the Angels in Orange

By Gunnar Hardy When floods flow, or smoke from an outof-control fire billows, the volunteers of the Queensland State Emergency Service are there to lend a helping hand.

State Emergency Service Week runs from Saturday 17th October to Sunday 24th October to promote what the SES does to keep the community safe and acknowledge the dedication of volunteers.

Beaudesert local, Marg Brown has served with the SES for the past 14 years and is currently the Beaudesert SES Group Leader.

In the past year her members, or ‘chickens’ as she affectionately calls them have contributed over three thousand volunteer hours keeping the residents of Beaudesert

“SES Week shines a light on the spirit of volunteering and celebrates the outstanding work done by volunteers who dedicate their own time to training to assist the community in times of adversity and emergencies” said GL Brown GL Brown expects the SES to be busy this storm season with many of the skills her group has been training for every Tuesday night being put into practice.

“We train to assist the community with storm damage to property, such as damage to roofs, clearing downed trees, sandbagging to safeguard against minor flooding, and if necessary, evacuate persons from a flooded property,” said GL Brown.

Local Finalist in Technology Awards Remarkable Beaudesert local Carrie-Ann Wilson of Scenic Rim Design has been named a finalist in this year’s Women in Technology (WiT) Awards.

Carrie-Ann was selected from a record field of 440 nominations.

“I’m incredibly humbled and excited to be a finalist for the 2020 WiT: Women in Technology Regional Award,” said Carrie-Ann. “It is a real honour to be selected alongside some outstanding women.”

The prestigious WiT Awards recognise outstanding talent and achievement, building support for women working in science and technology, and inspiring the next generation of leaders by showing what is possible.

For the first time, the WiT Awards has three new categories with one specifically focused on celebrating women who are working in Queensland’s regional, rural and remote locations.

Carrie-Ann is up for this special award for her work in delivering and managing IT services and solutions across the tertiary education, e-commerce, small business, and non-profit sectors.

Carrie-Ann has been making her mark on the technology industry for more than 15 years.

She worked for Griffith University for nine years, and says for most of that time she was the only woman amongst a staff of 100.

She cemented her local standing as an IT professional in 2016 when she founded Scenic Rim Design, a digital design business that provides clients with digital strategies and solutions and professional web and graphic design.

Carrie-Ann is a firm believer in the importance of empowering rural, regional, and remote communities to embrace digital technologies to help overcome adversity and the unique challenges faced in these parts.

“We need women in the industry,” said Carrie.

“Women contribute in a different way. It can definitely be a very rewarding career and in today’s world where you can work remotely, it is a more attractive option for women in rural areas.”

Women in Technology (WiT) President Dr Claudia Giurgiuman said although 2020 had been a challenging year, ‘the show must go on’.

“This year has been a year of change for ev-

eryone, including WiT, so we decided to create an online celebration to champion the State’s remarkable women in science and technology,” she said.

“Our virtual 2020 WiT Awards on 9th October are set to be bigger and better than ever with the ABC’s celebrity scientist Joel Gilmore as Master of Ceremonies, alongside keynote speaker Australia’s Chief Defence Scientist Professor Tanya Monro.”

Council Opposes Saleyard Heritage Application

Scenic Rim Regional Councillors voted to oppose an application for the Beaudesert Pig and Calf Saleyards to be included in the Queensland Heritage Register.

At a Council meeting on 21st September, Councillors voted unanimously in favour of a motion put forward by Cr Michael Enright and seconded by Cr Virginia West that: “1. Council acknowledge advice from the Department of Environment and Science of an application for the Beaudesert Pig and Calf Saleyard to be included into the Queensland Heritage Register; and 2. Council lodge a submission to the Department of Environment and Science, advising that

Photo: Lee Willis. the proposed inclusion of the Beaudesert Pig and Calf Saleyards into the Queensland Heritage Register is not supported, Council does not consider the Beaudesert Pig and Calf Saleyard has state-level heritage significance.”

At the meeting, a Council officer said the

submission would rebut the age and the historical provenance of the sale yards.

Over 1250 people have signed petitions to save the yards.

Local resident, Sue Harrison said the Heritage Application may be the last chance to save the Saleyards.

Northshore Exhibition for Local Artist

Local artist, Colleen Lavender of Colchameleon Design exhibited a life sized pelican sculpture in the Sculpture by the River exhibition at Northshore, Hamilton.

The event featured an indoor and outdoor sculptural exhibition with work from renowned sculptors, reflecting the

landmarks, flora and fauna, unique history and present uses of the Brisbane River through a spectacular display.

Colleen said she was delighted to be included in the exhibition. The pelican, fondly named ‘Percy’, took seven months to create using recycled steel.

Would Fido Pass an Etiquette Test?

By Cheryl Folley If there is one subject which appears more than any other on Scenic Rim social media sites, it’s dogs – lost dogs, found dogs and dogs that drive the neighbours mad with frequent barking.

But simple exercises by owners can eliminate many doggy problems and create generally well-mannered four-legged residents, according to local canine expert Karen Goebel, who is running an eightweek course, Canine Manners and Etiquette, for U3A Beaudesert (University of the Third Age).

It’s aimed at owners with either a young dog learning to live with its new family, or an older dog with behaviour problems.

Karen has an extensive background as a dog obedience judge for the Australian National Kennel Council and was a member of the Canine Control Council (Qld) for more than 50 years.

For over 35 years she choreographed and presented dog obedience displays at school fetes and agricultural shows, including the RNA. And the first question she will ask every dog owner who enrols?

“It’s always ‘why do you want to do this course?’” she says.

“The answers will usually include some variation of the dog annoying the neighbours, not coming when called, jumping up at visitors or general misbehaviour.”

Karen alternates some simple and fun tricks for owners and animals to learn, in between basic

good manners including Come, Sit, Stay plus advice on emotional attachment.

The course will be limited to members of U3A and is being held over eight weeks from 9am till 10.30am at Lions Bicentennial Park. Participants need to bring water for themselves and their dog, wear closed-in shoes and sun protection.

OBITUARY

A Caring Heart and Great Character Ailsa Isabel Manderson

Ailsa Isabel Manderson was born in Beaudesert, on 16th March 1925 and passed away on 15th September 2020.

She was the second child of dairy farmers, Alfred Benjamin and Isabel Carter in a family of three children, including older brother Henry and younger sister Olwyn.

Growing up at the property Amiens near Gleneagle, Ailsa attended primary school at Brooklands State School before being home schooled by her mother, who was a schoolteacher.

Growing up, Ailsa worked on her family’s dairy farm before meeting Eric Manderson, also a local dairy farmer.

Their relationship blossomed and on 1st November 1947 they married in the Beaudesert Methodist Church.

They built their home that same year, on a property on Bromelton House Road, Gleneagle, neighbouring the Manderson family farm. Eric and Ailsa welcomed their

first son Brian in July the following year, whilst still farming with Eric’s family nearby. After the arrival of Errol and Wendy, they established their own dairy farm on their property. This was their only family home. Ailsa stayed involved with the farm for many years, even after it was transitioned to Brian and Errol and their families.

Ailsa and Eric liked to attend local dances and were on the committee of the Woodhill Hall for many years. She was active on the committee for most of her adult life.

Ailsa enjoyed helping others. She was an active member of the Red Cross, Garden Club and Queensland Seniors. In her later years, she loved to crochet for others whilst listening to and watching cricket.

After many years devoted to her three children, Ailsa and Eric found time during their retirement for travel with friends. Ailsa particularly enjoyed attending bus

trips and social outings.

One of her highlights was in 2015, when Ailsa attended the 70th Debutante Ball reunion. She was one of the first debutantes after the war.

Even in her late 80’s, Ailsa enjoyed charity work, making the comment she enjoyed assisting the ‘older folk’.

Ailsa was a great admirer of cricket. In particular, the leadership style of former Australian Test Cricket captain Alan Border. In many ways, she approached her life in a similar vein, she had a gritty style, never afraid of hard work, contributed to her community, always cared about the people around her and always got the job done.

Ailsa was a very determined lady, to the point it was very hard to persuade her otherwise when she had made up her mind. Even in her younger years, she was known to check herself out of hospital early or refuse to go in her later years.

She was not only

tough, she had a nurturing side which was seen by people close to her including her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She liked to keep an eye on how her family were growing and developing, even if she was unable to catch up with them on a

regular basis.

Ailsa passed down many life experiences to those around her. She shared stories about the tough and rewarding times she had throughout her life, always highlighting the only way forward is to pick yourself up and move on with life.

A Shout-Out To The Quiet Achievers

Council is calling for nominations for its 2021 Australia Day Awards as a shout-out to the quiet achievers of the Scenic Rim community.

Mayor Greg Christensen said the awards provided an important opportunity to shine a spotlight on community champions.

“We all know someone worthy of recognition and I encourage everyone to make the most of this opportunity to nominate a friend, a family member, a work colleague or a community leader for their contribution.”

Community members who responded to the 2019 bushfires which devastated the region featured in the 2020 Scenic Rim Australia Day Awards and the 2021 awards will be presented against the backdrop of the global COVID-19

event and local impacts.

The 2021 Scenic Rim Australia Day Awards will be presented across four categories: • Community Event of the Year for the individual, group or organisation which has staged the most outstanding community event, including online events, in the Scenic Rim region between 30th November 2019 and 30th November 2020.

• Citizen of the Year for a young person accomplishing great things in all walks of life and making an outstanding contribution to the Scenic Rim community. Nominees must be between 16 and 30 years of age as at 26 January 2021.

• Citizen of the Year for someone who has been an inspirational role

model to the Scenic Rim community over a number of years. Nominees must be between 31 and 65 years of age as at 26th January 2021.

• Citizen of the Year for a person aged 65 and over, who provides outstanding service to the Scenic Rim community and presents a positive image of ageing. Nominees must be 65 years or older as at 26th January 2021.

Activities and Guide Walks at Binna Burra

Binna Burra’s accommodation is open and their famous Activities Program is back on track.

Heading the new Activities Team is Lisa Groom and her guides from Park Tours. Lisa is the granddaughter of Binna Burra’s co-founder Arthur Groom, and her daughter Inari is also a tour guide.

Lisa and Inari grew up exploring Lamington National Park and the surrounding gorges and plateaus.

Canungra Books and Art owner, Jan McGregor says with Binna Burra and O’Reillys back in operation it feels like the hinterland heart is back.

Canungra Books and Art is always a surprise when people come in, with no proper shopfront to peer into beforehand.

“It’s not until people are in the door that they discover that we are a ‘real bookshop’ with a huge range of books from the very old to current favourites,” said Jan. One of the big surprises is the look on

children’s faces when they see the record player. The comment ‘this brings back memories’ is a regular from adults when they see the range of records including Jazz, Blues, Rock ‘n Roll, Classical and sheet music too.

“One of our growing collections is our beautiful range of vintage books,” explained Jan. “We have treasures from the 1800s including a beautiful set of Shakespeare, a rare collection of Dickens books, and many beautiful poetry

books, first editions and favourite classics.”

Vintage clothing is a popular part of the shop.

Items are carefully selected by Jan’s niece Ruby and the shop has regular clients who come to check out new stock.

We drove over the Boonah Road past Wyaralong Dam. There is a wonderful Sculpture Park at Wyaralong Dam, as well as the opportunity to fish, canoe, horse and bike riding trails, walking and, of course, enjoying the sculptures. In the next year or so another sculpture will be added. This is a great place for family and other get-togethers.

Beaudesert – In A Time Of Change It is interesting to reflect on our history and recognise that many of the past challenges are similar to challenges we face today.

One particular example was the outrage from a section of our community on the impending closure of the Beaudesert Tramway in 1944, due to financial viability and competition from road transport.

Not surprisingly, the district continued to grow and prosper despite these changes.

The Beaudesert district

has experienced consistent growth for almost 150 years on the back of strong industries, firstly with timber, then dairy and beef cattle, and more recently a broad range of agriculture and a diverse range of manufacturing and construction.

Importantly, new emerging industries of health and allied services as well as hospitality and tourism are growing across the region.

My vision for Beaudesert is to be the gateway to a resilient region that is home to a diverse range of industries, new technologies and innovation.

One that welcomes change and explores new opportunities as they present themselves.

Beaudesert Town Centre Revitalisation Detailed design work is being carried out on the Selwyn Street extension which will connect Brisbane Street to Helen Street.

Earthworks for this first stage will commence in 2021.

At Council’s recent Ordinary Meeting, Council voted unanimously to oppose the inclusion of the Beaudesert Pig and Calf Sale Yards into the Queensland Heritage Register.

A final decision on the future of the yards won’t be made until the outcome of the Queensland Heritage Register application is known and the engineer’s report on the condition of the yards is received.

Brickbat Council’s decision to object to Heritage Listing for the Beaudesert Pig and Calf Saleyards.

An excellent segment on ABC News recently.

More importantly, where is the contract and payment detail for anything associated with council’s major projects of the Boonah ‘revitalisation’ (work needs to be completed by the end of 2020) and the Beaudesert Town Centre Revitalisation Project?

Surely these tenders have been let? Council is required to disclose all contracts and payments

over $200,000 yet no details of any contracts regarding these two projects appear on either last financial year’s disclosures nor those since 1st July 2020 (see: Contracts and Accumulative Payments on council’s website).

Some interesting information there.

Bouquet Common sense has prevailed and several of Boonah’s street trees are to be saved. Perhaps public consultation can in future take place before council makes its decisions?

For Little Gymnasts

Beaudesert Gymnastics Club started 2020 off with the hope of expanding on their growing classes, but the brakes were quickly put on with the start of COVID-19.

Committee member Sarah Kurz said the Club put measures in place to keep gymnasts and staff safe.

“Then the dreaded news that none of us wanted to hear, ‘close the doors’,” said Sarah.

“This started the emotional roller coaster for many of us - how do we keep the kids active and motivated and looking forward to coming back?

We spent hours researching and attending Zoom meetings.”

THE WILD BEAUDESERT TRAIN

HISTORY

The Beaudesert Rail Line began at Bethania, south of the Logan River. Bethania to Logan Village opened 21st September 1885 and Logan Village to Beaudesert opened 16th May 1888.

Mixed passenger and goods trains ran until 1929 when passengers used a Rail Motor. This service stopped in 1961 with the increased use of private cars after World War Two. The freighting service continued until 20th May 1996.

Black smoke is belching from our stacks, the roar affrights the ear, Far across the Blue Gum flats pale farmers blanch with fear.

Mothers sing their babes to sleep with a gentle old refrain But the kids leap out of bed to see the Wild Beaudesert Train.

But crowed on canvas stoke her up for wing-ed gods are here We pass the sawmill like a streak a sort of smokey smear.

The wheels fly off the boiler tubes are busted up and broke We dash into Beaudesert town a storm of flame and smoke.

Still the grey beards tell the tale and swear by all the powers We made the run from Melbourne Street in under seven hours.

Yea down the years they hand the yarn and chant the same refrain.

“By George, those days ’twas hard to beat the Wild Beaudesert Train”.

It’s rear-wheel drive, turbo, has two doors and is a coupe.

This is one hell of a recipe made by two of the world’s best car manufacturers, Toyota and BMW. Toyota decided on two trim levels, GT and GTS, and one engine type for Australia.

The GT starts from $84,900 plus on-road costs, while the GTS costs an extra $10,000 more, but brings with it a greater specification level.

The turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engine produces 250kW of power and 500Nm of torque and it is fast.

Using the inbuilt launch control program it’ll sprint from 0-100km/ h in just 4.3 seconds, which is partly thanks to the race-inspired Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyre as standard on 19-inch wheels.

Something that really is amazing is the lack of fuel usage.

The engine has been designed to run on 91RON if the driver so chooses and has a combined consumption of only 7.7/100km.

Faye and Gaye Combine to Win Open Pairs

Beaudesert Bowls Club Ladies Open Pairs was finally played after a bad start to the year with COVID-19.

In a competitive but friendly game, Faye Hines and Gaye Blank had the final win against Barbara Markwell and Pat Stuhmcke.

Barbara and Pat were ahead initially but were overtaken by Faye and Gaye, with the final score Faye and Gaye 23 to Barbara and Pat’s 14.

This is the third year that Faye and Gaye have played in the Ladies Open Pairs together. They were runners up in the Open Pairs in 2018 and 2019.

Barbara and Pat have won pairs previously, playing with other partners.

Faye and Gaye were very excited about the win, saying it is a great honour to win the open pairs.

“This year we played just that little bit better,” said Faye, “But it was just the luck of the day in terms of how the bowls went.”

Unfortunately Faye and Gaye will not be representing the Club in the Champion of Champions as the Ladies’ District have cancelled the pairs and fours competitions for this year.

Friday Night Bowls Barefoot Bowls has started again with play starting at 5.30pm registration for a 6.30pm start every Friday night.

There is a sausage sizzle before the game and raffles held during the night. Bowls can be borrowed from the Club and assistance with learning the game is available. Children are welcome to play with the family.

Horse Racing Beaudesert trainer, Ben Ahrens travelled to Dalby winning one of Australia’s oldest races - The Plough Inn Cup Maiden, with his three-year-old chestnut colt Without Choice. The race has been running for 161 years.

Ben Robinson travelled to Caloundra and teamed up with local jockey Brooke Ainsworth, winning with a former Victorian hurdler. A recent addition to the stable, seven-year-old gelding Powers Lookout had his second start for Robinson, winning at odds of $101.

Golf A massive three weeks for Maverick Antcliff on the European Golf Tour. After a ninth placing in the Portugal Open, he travelled to Ballymena, Northern Island (best known for the location of Game of Thrones) to play in the Irish Golf Open. In the early stages of the last round, Maverick was sharing the lead. He finished in equal third place. His next event, the Scottish Open was another successful tournament, earning prize money and world ranking points by making the cut.

Championship Show Jumping in Beaudesert A week of championship show jumping and equitation was held at Beaudesert Showground for the Queensland Pony Club Zone 2 State Championships in September.

Organiser, Melinda Hughes said the Zone 2 Riders performed exceptionally well, with Fuschia Criss from Tamborine taking out the 13 years to Under 26 years 120cm event.

Fuschia rode Dual Diamond in the class and is now eligible to be part of the Queensland State Team.

Greenbank Pony Club member, Katelyn Burgess, took out the Jumping Equitation 21 years and under 26 years class riding B F Shoshoni and is also eligible to ride for the Queensland State Team.

Melinda said jumping equitation is judged on the style of the rider and horse over three rounds of competition.

“Not all riders will compete in the jumping equitation classes,” she said.

“It is something that really prepares young riders for show jumping
